He was a nice man also. A friend, who is fantastic on the keyboards, was playing in a hotel lobby. As he was playing, out of the corner of his eye he saw an entourage stop and listen. One of them began walking towards him and when he turned to look, it was Pavarotti. He handed him two tickets to the evening's performance and the use of a limo to travel to the event. It was an unforgettable evening for both him and his son. They were treated like royalty, even though no one knew who they were.

When Pavarotti was born, God breathed on him. There's no simply no other explanation for a voice like that. Yes, there are other tenors such as Mario Lanza and many others that I like. But no one brings the emotion to the music quite the way he does. And he makes it look so easy. He almost never looks like he's straining at all. Love this video and could watch it all day.

This is from Puccini's Opera. It's the story of a princess who refuses to be married. To discourage men pursuing her she states that anyone wanting her must answer 3 riddles, but anyone that tries and fails is beheaded. She kills many many men until Pavarotti's character comes along. He's loved her for very long and he successfully answers the riddles anonymously. She's absolutely furious and announces that no one is allowed to sleep that night until he is found and brought to her so that she could kill him.
This song is him somewhat mocking her "Nesun Dorma" = "none shall sleep" and announcing that he will win. The last two lines that were very powerful actually mean "I will win".
    Gorgeous opera and breathtaking song.

    • @giuliogrifi7739
      @giuliogrifi7739 4 місяці тому

Actually, "Nessun dorma" I think it should be best translated in "none dares to sleep" or "none sleeps" .....I don't know which is the rightest.

    • @abbajabba7
      @abbajabba7 2 місяці тому +1

One small correction; The princess doesn't want to marry him after he completes the riddles, so he challenges her with a riddle of his own and gives her all night to work out the answer. If she gets it right she may kill him, but if she is unable to answer the riddle she must marry him after all. I forget the wording of the riddle, but it ends with "what is my name?" The princess believes the answer to the riddle is the name of the man, but she is mistaken (the answer to the riddle is "love."
During Nessun Dorma, the princess is torturing somebody she believes knows his name. The whole kingdom is forbidden to sleep (or afraid to sleep? I forget the specifics on that). Calaf (the man/character who is trying to marry the princess) is declaring that he will win the contest of wits along with the heart of the princess.

Nessun Dorma is from the Puccini opera, Turandot. Whenever I hear Pavarotti perform this, I hold my breath and tear up. With all respect, no one else can sing this song like he did.
Here are the lyrics in Italian and English:
    Italian:
    Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
    Tu pure, o, Principessa,
    nella tua fredda stanza,
    guardi le stelle
    che tremano d'amore
    e di speranza.
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me,
    il nome mio nessun saprà!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò
    quando la luce splenderà!
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio
    che ti fa mia!
    (Il nome suo nessun saprà!...
    e noi dovrem, ahime, morir!)
    Dilegua, o notte!
    Tramontate, stelle!
    Tramontate, stelle!
    All'alba vincerò!
    vincerò, vincerò!
    English:
    Nobody shall sleep!...
    Nobody shall sleep!
    Even you, oh Princess,
    in your cold room,
    watch the stars,
that tremble with love and with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
my name no one shall know...
    No!...No!...
On your mouth, I will tell it when the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!...
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
    Vanish, o night!
    Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

I was lucky enough to see Pavarotti many many times at NYC's Metropolitan Opera House and this video was later in his career, he was the most amazing singer I have ever seen, he had a clear , strong, beautiful voice and his Belcanto technique was flawless and he made it appear effortless but as a classically trained singer I assure you that it is very hard work but the training teaches you to make it look like it is easy . Thank God that so many of his performances were recorded, there will never be any like Pavarotti.

Pavarotti's first experience of singing outside his home area of Medena, Italy was when he was 19 and sang with a choir from his home town at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in Wales. It was in June 1955. As a 6-yr old, this concert was my first time at a big musical event, and our children's choir sang just after the Modena choir. Obviously, back then I didn't know I was sharing a stage with a future singing icon. Pavarotti returned to Llangollen 40 yrs later for the 50th Anniversary Eisteddfod. I wasn't able to be there, but my oldest son and my daughter went. What a treat.

Growing up in an Italian family, Pavarotti was played often in my grandparent's home.Even as a child, I remember loving his voice. It stood out to me, and I could feel the emotion behind the music, though I did not understand the words (often Italian or Latin). My uncle said he was going to take me to see him, because he was going to be playing in NY. Well, my uncle tried to get tickets, but they sold out too quickly, and the price for scalped tickets was ridiculous. Sadly, I never got to see him live. It must have been amazing.

My personal fav is his Olympic performance. It was the turino olympics- right next to his hkme town. The crowd sang the choir part - after all their italian so they know it - and he knew this would be the last performance. He was dying of pancreatic cancer. It was so meaningful and special. Theyll never be another like him!
I loved his Pavarotti and friend specials because they showed he wasnt a diva - he lived mysic and no matter what kind of music you did .... if you did it well ...he reveled in your mysic just as much as he did his own!

To know that somewhere in cosmic time and space, the most beautiful voice singing their perfect song...perfectly. It doesn't happen lightly and it doesn't go unnoticed. Maybe you do not like opera...but you know this is the very best this song will ever be sung. So I have heard the most beautiful, perfectly tuned human voice singing Nessun Dorma. I had the opportunity to see him perform once. I do not remember what his first song was. He was much older and maybe not as perfect. I do remember how the first note he sang felt. It blasted across the coliseum in Biloxi, Mississippi and engulfed the entire space..the air, the people, the hallways..it covered everything. One of my top 10 life memories to date.

Pavarotti played this role in the opera "Turandot" many times, where players have to sing and act. In this concert, at the end of this song where he sings "I will win, I will win, I will win", his facial expressions reflect that role, he is acting. There are many operas on UA-cam, some with English subtitles so you know what its about. Start with light, comical operas like The Barber of Seville (Rossini) and The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart). Other fan favorites are Carmen, LaTraviata and Madame Butterfly. They will make you cry.

I've seen his performances of this aria from his youth where he held that last note far longer. But I think that was when he was still showing off. By this point in his career he understands that it's not about him, it's about serving the purpose of the opera. Also, in his youth his tone was more nasal, here it's round and full. This performance was Pavarotti experienced and at the height of his powers.

this is one of the best performances of Nessun Dorma, although there are other renditions by Pavarotti that show that he did vary in his performance a bit.
Done not so flawlessly but with so much emotion is one video that might still be out there on youtube of a young Italian tenor singing Nessun Dorma from his balcony during the first and horrible covid lockdown in Italy. Gives me chills, still, because the climax of "vincere" took a completey different meaning then.

I have so much appreciation for other genres now, and this is one of my very favorite vocal performances of all time. I'm amazed. Every. Single. Time.

Mr. Pavarotti was a wonderful tenor. Lord welcomed him home way too soon. My mother had the great privilege of seeing Luciano perform in ‘89. She still to this day, some 35 years later, talks about how he had the voice of an angel and wishes we could have seen him perform together. Andrea Bocelli is going to have to do! 😂❤

He makes it look effortless, but it is anything but. It is a lifetime of incredibly hard work and discipline and a staggering amount of talent. That is opera. When done well, it is simply unbeatable.

You might want to check out Dan Vasc’s Nessus Dorma. It was his late father’s favorite opera (he was of partial Italian heritage). Dan performed this song shortly following his death. You can see the emotions overtake him, as he and his dad were especially close. Dan’s performance is, as with everything he does, literally extraordinary!!🌻

I always love the way how Pavarotti connects each notes. So beautiful. No one sang like him not before and not after. If you like Pavarotti you must see Mario Del Monaco and Franso Corelli. They’re even more awesome.

The conductor watches the singer to hold the orchestra so the singer can breath. That’s why he’s watching him. The song (aria in opera lingo) is ‘None Shall Sleep’ - Nessus Dorma. The Princess Turandot challenges him to answer three questions or die. If he answers them he can marry her. No one has ever answered them and she has killed many suitors. He’s saying none shall sleep until he answers the questions, and he will conquer. Victory! Victory. This is a perfect example of why opera is better in Italian or French or the original language, because when you translate it, it can be a bit silly… 😂

I remember an interview on Late Night with David Letterman, from back in the day. I don't recall Letterman's question, but I'll never forget Pavarotti's answer.
He said (paraphrased) that he likened his voice to an "animal scream", and that he has spent the last 50 years learning to tame it.
THAT is how it is "done".

This is also when he was older. When you hear him when he was younger, holy hell, this is perfect, but earlier, he was Godlike! It's insane. Him singing ANYTHING by Puccini is just perfection!

In his youth Pavarotti held that final note much longer, but by this stage in his career he'd learned that cutting it when he did fits the orchestration better, and that it's about supporting the aria, not him showing off. Also compared to his youth, his tone is less nasal, more resonant, and his technique is flawless. I've watched four recordings of him performing Nessun Dorma, and in this one his passion is unmatched.

From the master tenor (debatable in my book but I'm not arguing. I just have a soft spot for Peter Schrier) to the queen. May I recommend Diana Damrau singing Der Holle Roche? I always spell that a little wrong, but you can also find it as the queen of the night's Aria from The Magic Flute. She has played the queen many times in many costumes. Look for the navy blue one covered in crystals
