  • Babymetal (Japanese: ベビーメタル, Hepburn: Bebīmetaru) (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese kawaii metal band. The band consists of Suzuka Nakamoto as "Su-metal" and Moa Kikuchi as "Moametal". The band is produced by Kobametal from the Amuse talent agency. Their vocals are backed by heavy metal instrumentation, performed by a group of session musicians known as the "Kami Band" at performances.
The band was formed in 2010, with the original lineup of Su-metal (vocal and dance), Moametal (scream and dance), and Yui Mizuno as "Yuimetal" (scream and dance), with the concept of creating a fusion of the heavy metal and Japanese idol genres. Originally a sub-unit of the Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin, Babymetal became an independent act in 2013, following Nakamoto's departure from Sakura Gakuin. Babymetal released their eponymous debut album in February 2014. Their second album Metal Resistance was released worldwide in April 2016. Babymetal has also embarked on several tours, with a majority of their tour dates taking place outside of Asia. The group released their third album Metal Galaxy in October 2019.
On October 19, 2018, Babymetal announced that Yui Mizuno had decided to leave the band due to poor health, following her absence from live performances since December 2017.[1] Since her departure, the band has performed with backup dancers at live performances. In 2019, the band introduced three backup dancers called "Avengers" who performed in rotation at each live show to form a trio with Moametal and Su-metal.

Very good first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. Not many people come to 'Amore' for a first time, you could have started anywhere and got a completely different first impression - this is just one small element of what they do being one of Su-metal's solo songs (she only has four official solos plus she did a couple of cover songs early on before they had as many of their own songs and released their first album).
Power metal is just one of the things they do - they have about 50 songs now and they include songs in virtually every metal genre (power, speed, death, black, folk, prog, djent, thrash, nu-metal etc) but they will also mix many other musical styles and genres in with the metal (ska, reggae, Bollywood, Enka, Latino, EDM, rap, hip hop, Jpop and more) ... usually when you least expect it.
As you read, they formed in 2010. Su-metal was 12, her two young friends Yuimetal and Moametal were 11. They were one of a handful of sub-units of a JPop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin which had a school theme and was for girls aged 10 to 15 aimed at developing their talents while coaching them on all aspects of entertainment with a view to their progressing their careers in whatever aspect they enjoyed most or were best at.
Of the sub-units BABYMETAL was expected to be a short lived and failed experiment and the least commercially viable and least successful, so they were provided no extra budget, but they were a passion project of their producer (a life long metalhead) which he formed and developed around Su-metal's vocal talents and stage presence.
Against every expectation BABYMETAL was the group that took off, gaining their own audience nobody knew would exist and eventually, when Su was 15 and due to graduate from Sakura Gakuin, separating to become an independent band in their own right. That happened in 2013.
11 years in and they are internationally the most successful Japanese band of all time. There are bigger and better known bands in Japan of course, but they have broken all sorts of records outside of Japan and gained a world wide fan base.
Yui and Moa provide backing vocals, harmonies, lead chants and basically make sure the whole crowd ... not just the first 10 rows, I do mean the whole crowd right up to the back rows in the balconies at huge arenas, are joining in and being part of the show. Officially their role was described as "scream and dance", but it is key to what makes BABYMETAL unique and one of the absolute best live acts on the planet (and they have international awards proving that is not just my opinion).
Su-metal has her solos, Yui and Moa also had 4 songs they would perform as a duo (known as Black BABYMETAL) without Su while she got her chance for a break. Mostly it will be all three of them - Su with the lead vocals, Yui and Moa supporting her and leading the audience in what the Japanese call "ai no te" - so when they jump the audience jumps, when they sing their lines those are what the audience sing along with.
Sadly Yui was taken ill towards the end of 2017, she missed the 2018 tour and eventually announced she would be leaving the band in October 2018. Through 2019 to 2021 Su and Moa, who chose to continue as a duo, were supported by 3 girls (the Avengers Riho, Kano and Momoko) who took turns dancing, but not singing, in the third spot.
Early on they would sing and dance with the instrumentals pre-recorded on a backing track. When they started doing their own small shows guys in skeleton suits (known as Babybones) would mime the instruments.
When it was decided they would be separating from Sakura gakuin a little more budget was made available and a live band - the Kami Band, some of Japan's very best session musicians - was gradually phased in playing at a couple of festivals and the encores in a few shows from October 2012.
In March 2014 BABYMETAL released their first album and played two big shows at the Budokan in Tokyo and the Kami Band became their full time support for all live shows from then on. They all have their own bands and projects so there will be clashes of dates, so the Kami Band has had many members, but the hard core of about 6 has been constant. You will see these people in most videos - Mikio Fujioka (RIP Jan 2018), Takayoshi Ohmura, Leda Cygnus and ISAO on guitars, BOH on bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums ... and yes he keeps that pace up for entire concerts.
In 2019 for the lengthy US tour there were probably a lot of clashes and visa issues, so for that and the 2020 UK and Europe tour the Kami Band of the West (American musicians) supported BABYMETAL.
The Legend of 1997 live performance of 'Headbanger' would be a good one for you to see what BABYMETAL are like with all 3 girls ... Su was born in 1997 so that concert was her 16th birthday celebration in December 2013.

I don't think I've ever seen someone's first reaction to BabyMetal be Amore. :p Good song, and one of Su's best vocal performances, but not necessarily representative of BabyMetal's catalogue. This is one of the lead singer's four solo songs. There are usually two other performers on stage with her. They have a lot of range, and there's a lot to dig into. Most people start with Karate or Megitsune. (Or Gimme Chocolate.) The drummer is indeed a tireless beast, and his name is Hideki Aoyama. The welcoming committee should be along soon to initiate you properly. They are better at educational comments than I am. XD But welcome to the Fox Hole. I hope you react to more. 🤘🦊🤘

Great reaction, thanks and welcome to BABYMETAL!
I believe that their longest concert was the one at the Wembley Arena in April 2016. 17 songs and the BD stops at 1h 43m mark. Not the usual though. The usual is between 1h and 1h 20m running time. Or between 11 to 14 songs (give or take).
Fun fact: this song premiered live exactly at that concert in London and the audio from this compilation is also from that live performance.
Their drummer, Hideki Aoyama has an insane control of the double kick

"Let the words of love resound into the night sky.
Let them bring Amore to outer space.
    The blue star that shines
brings the life into my hands."
    - Amore
This one is a solo song featuring lead singer Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto, or just "Su").
Such a beautiful blend of her voice and the electric guitars.
And of course that six-stringed bass solo from BOH.
I noticed both Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Takayoshi Ohmura on guitars in this compilation footage.
And of course Hideki Aoyama on drums.
The studio track had guitarist Leda Cygnus playing both guitars and bass.
He is also a frequent member of BABYMETAL touring live Kami Band.

  • @cuttysark8017

This is a slightly schizophrenic compilation of performances, but still epic. We get Su's wings symbol at the beginning which harkens back to her short time in "Karen Girl's", another Amuse Agency owned band, and you will see they form part of the Babymetal logo. The backing band is called the Kami Band and they are dressed as spirits. They are a rotating group of top professionals, but the drummer is always Hideki Aoyama. You commented about the cardio involved in the performances and you are right, they work really hard and you haven't see the intense dance routines that Babymetal perform when the lead singer, Su-metal, is joined by the othe two members, Yuimetal and Moametal, who provide backup vocals as well. For an example of that watch "Headbanger Legend 1997" and "Road of Resistance Live in Japan"
I also recommend you listen to "Akatsuki Budokan Black Night" next as I think of Amore and Akatsuki as a pair, it's another Su solo. They both have "crimson moon" references and mentions of keeping love alive even when the lovers are separated, but Amore is more optimistic than Akatsuki. I also like Su's dancing in this. I feel that Amore is one of BM's more straight ahead songs, at least musically. Up to the dramatic pause it's a power ballad without any bizarre time signature changes or massive transitions, it's just driving forward. The melody always resolves itself in an unsurprising but satisfying way. It's also almost as much about the guitar and bass solos as Su's singing so while Aoyama is driving everything with the drums we also get solos from BOH (bass tapping), Fujioka and Ohmura. It's a great "big hair" type song that reminds me of the 1980s in a good way.

Great & welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。Your "Kawaii" pronunciation is perfect. You have received tons of information about BM from many fans in various countries. Their activities have been worldwide since 2014. Actually this compilation video includes a show at Wembley Arena in 2016 and their substantial debut in the international market was at Sonisphere festival 2014 in Knebworth, UK. So BM calls UK their "second home". In the latest world tours from June 2019 through March 2020 (prior to COVID), they performed live 20 times in USA (in 18 states), 19 in EU/UK/Russia (11 countries) and 1 in Taiwan in addition to 15 in Japan. (They performed 4 times at their second home in Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester and London in 2020). Last year, they carefully restarted their activities and completed 10 serial concerts here in Tokyo taking very strict countermeasures against infection. I witnessed their shows at the venue ヽ(^o^)丿 Please explore BABYMETAL more!

To me personally, this song is around the middle field of their catalogue. But I know other fans are much more fond of it than I am. Either way, this being a Su solo, you have only experienced half of the phenomenon. Usually there are two dancers by her side, which makes surprisingly (for a Meta fan) much of a difference in the entertainment value. And you'll also notice that not only the drummer is having a workout, everyone on stage is.
