    10:53 - in the UK, if you read the highway code, it doesn;t say green means go, you have absolute priority. It says Green means proceed if clear to do so. Just as the motorcyclist was happy to chance an amber turning to orange the car driver was happy to chance amber turning to red. Both in the wrong but as a vulnerable road user the motorcyclist ought to have some self preservation and assume drivers will be daft.

I was straight back up, gave the bike a one-handed lift and spent the next 20 minutes just pacing around making sure nothing was broken. Protective gear saved my head, my arms, my torso and my legs. It did nothing for my dignity, though. Bike got a few scratches and lost the end off the throttle grip. Gave it a once over this morning, tightened the headstock (two bolts had snapped loose), checked the engine, gearbox, brakes, all good.

    Just got back from Gran Canaria and a week of riding those amazing rides. Constant blind hairpin turns alongside cliffs - believe me - you need to be able to take turns in your lane. Even having your head over the middle with a bus coming around the corner against you is a no no. And it did happen twice to me

    Around the 5 minute mark, I have preached about this until I am blue in the face. I used to drive a truck and that rider was exactly in his blind spot. Too much to cover here, but put yourself in their mirror so you can see their face and stay behind them until you have room to scoot by unimpeded. Give them a few seconds at least to pick a lane and if you decide to pass, don't dilly dally.

    I like to sit on the right or left of the lane depending. Because if I’m in the middle of the line and the car infront hits the brakes or I’m not paying attention then I have to apply brake and swerve a lot but if I’m right or left of the lane then if the car hits the brakes I don’t have to swerve as much I just have to slightly tilt the bike and I can go by the car and also eliminates the risk of hitting the brakes and the car behind you slams into you. But sitting right or left depends if I have a bike lane on my left I’ll sit on the left side if I have a wall or no space to swerve if something goes wrong I’ll go right side vice versa

    In the UK one thing I have noticed is that car drivers always tend to slow down passing lorries/trucks. Not sure why. Maybe they are worried about being in the blindspot too long. But the thing is, if they didn't slow down when passing they would be past the lorry/truck faster. However, I have always done what Dan has said; I wait for the vehicle in front of me to be past and clear of the lorry/truck before I begin my own overtake.

    • @233kosta
      @233kosta 3 місяці тому +1

      I drove cars for about a decatlde before getting on two wheels (silly me, I know... 😔) and the main thing I noticed about overtaking lorries is the effect of the flow field around them. First it sucks you in gently, as you come past the side of the trailer. Then it pulls you in as you approach the front, then it pushes you out. About halfway past the trailer, it also starts pushing you back.
      That all happens because the gap between the lorry and the car is usually quite narrow, so you're effectively sat inside the lorry's flow field. That's why I'd advise any rider to give them a wide berth. We have a whole lane to play with, it makes sense to stay out of the aerodynamic hazard. Same goes for meeting one on A-roads and the like. There's absolutely no reason to deliberately put yourself in the path of a lorry's air blast - shift away from it if it's clear.
      Given how inattentive so many drivers are, I would not be surprised if most of them fail to correct for these effects. In extreme cases, you might see them wandering across the lane somewhat. But the decelaration effect is more subtle, so it's normal to see more people slowing down as a result.

    I'm not old enough to drive a motorcycle so I drive a scooter. I know it is nothing like driving a motorcycle but on a scooter you don't have ABS and traction control.
    I wish I had filmed this moment but there was a lot of ice on the road, and I drove to a road were I tought I had more traction but I gave it a little bit to much throttle in a turn and my scooter just got out of control. I don't even know what I did to save it but that scared the shit out of me.

    He had plenty of time to brake at those lights, even in the wet, he was almost at a standstill when he hit the throttle.
    He wasn't accelerating because he couldn't stop, he saw it go to orange and decided to be clever and blast through it. Unfortunately the other car had the same idea.
    Remember RED = STOP, ORANGE = STOP and get ready. They both mean stop, orange is just telling you they're about to change.
