The other lesson Dan gave about being able to accelerate so much during straightaways and being unable to brake / negotiate a corner holds true for ev's too. They are quite quick, but as heavy as a truck, and people treat them like a sports car, but they don't have the experience.
Same issue inexperienced bikers get into when they run speeds over 100 on a straightaway before a turn... It's so easy to go fast, but negotiating the turn (or stop) is where you really need practice.

  • @heynewt

A lot of these issues have to do with the rider riding too fast. Motorcycles are narrower than cars, of course, so their perspective doesn't change to the driver waiting to pull out like a car does (meaning, they don't appear to grow larger as they approach as much as a car does ). So a car driver can't gauge how fast a motorcycle is coming. So truck/car drivers assume you're going the speed limit. When you're going faster than the speed limit, they don't realize it and pull out in front of you. (See FortNine's video about pigeons).

0:44 Don't do what Dan says which is stay in the middle of the lane. The safest way to approach this corner is to be on the outside right of the lane in position 3. The inside line is also the wrong and slower line and that is ALWAYS how people end up going wide on turns because they turn in too early. The rider in this situation clearly starts turning in way before he can see the actual apex in the turn, this is classic amateur riding and the most common mistake beginners make when taking corners. Turn late so you get maximum visibility , wait for the apex, then engage the corner fully.

Thank you Dan, glad that I watched your videos and other motovloggers for safety tips & tricks before starting to ride. As soon as I started riding I practiced emergency stops, progressive braking, slowing down in corner. And for sure that saved me today, a lady on a scooter from opposite lane tried to make a turn to my lane, I spotted her, roll off the throttle, begin braking slowly and downshift. Stopped just 3 feet away before crashing. The braking was soo smooth my weight just gradually shifted with no sudden change in mommentum, everything feels firm and confident even in a harzard situation.

The Africa Twin problem is tire related. My AT did the same thing. Tire was balanced perfectly, rim was true, and the axle was properly aligned with the fork tubes. I couldnt figure it out. After i removed the Shinko 705 front and replaced with a Dunlop Mission, no more wobble. Shinko refunded my money and said it was "out of round". Nice QC Shinko.

Good tip would be to DO YOUR MAINTENANCE. Everyone want to ride fast but nobody want to spend the money to make sure their bike is roadworthy.
Brakes, tires, chain/sprocket, center bearing for the triple tree, fork seals & shocks.. Speed wobble most of the time can be to blame from bad forks, that little bearing in the center, or a worn out damper.
How many people out here actually practicing high speed and low speed swerving? or emergency braking?

I would have waited to see what they did first, then moved left. One of the things I've always liked about your channel is that you aren't always on the biker's side. Unlike the videos you review, which often present things as if the motorcyclist is never in the wrong, watching your reviews has helped me realize how often accidents *are* the rider's fault, or where their actions at least play a part. Sometimes it's negligence or stupidity, sometimes it's just "white stage," whatever.
Perfect example: The rider at 14:09 who is pissed at the gold Jeep for going at what he says is a "4-way stop" is just flat out wrong. I noticed right away that the Jeep *does not have a stop sign*. Not only that, but as soon as the rider enters the intersection, as they are looking over at the Jeep, you can see a green traffic light pop on! Indicating that traffic in that direction is free to move.
It certainly looks like an unusual intersection with stop signs in one direction, and a traffic lights for the other direction, so I understand the rider's confusion. But it doesn't appear to be a 4-way stop like he claims. And that only makes his immature reaction look even worse.

For tip 6; yeah the over the top crashes hurt even at lower speeds; I grabbed brake out of muscle memory after bleeding brakes, went up n over but landed more or less feet first; suffered hairline fracture guess it would be higher ankle? torn my shoulder tendon in half (healed up since but can’t lift as much weight as before) and got knocked silly.

Hello, constructive feedback. I believe that you are missing out on the fact that the first rider applied the brakes while turning. Brakes must be applied in a straight line at all times. Emergency braking procedures can be performed at all times on the roads, even in curbs. However, to brake in a curve requires you to rebalance the bike up right. ty

I was just scanning through these comments looking to see if anyone else noticed it...... If you look Closely as the Tesla's driver side seat area, you can see what appears to be a Possible Mannequin-Like Figure seated there apparently Fully Visible with a Completely All-White Head, All-White Hands And Arms, (Look Closely at the Tops of the steering wheel on the left and right sides), and Possibly an All-White Chest as well.
Now it Could just be my visiual misinterpretation here, but that sure looks to me at This Time at least that that's Actaully a Dummy of Some Sort, (And based on the way they were driving around that corner , that's Of Course LITERALLY TRUE),🙄 and Not an actual Human but I'm Honestly Not Sure at this point......

The issue with the Africa Twin is very common on these big adventure bikes. Mostly seen this when guys have a knobby front tire with a more road bias rear. Causes a very strange bar shake when you release the bars. But You don't even feel it when your hands are on the bars. I had this issue and replacing my rear to match the front solved it.

6:50 he did not lose track because of a bump. He looked back. You can clearly see how his head turns.
It is incredibly difficult to maintain a straight path in the motorcycle in a different direction of what you are looking, and this guy just turned slightly which caused the wobble.
Lesson: Keep your eyes on the fucking road. If you need to check whether your friend is following you, either stop or buy a mirror.

Been at too fast a speed and he wouldn't have gotten out of the way in time or lost control or b. In case of poor reaction from the other driver, lead to a high speed collision. Braking first was good

the shaking wheel in a minute 13 is just caused by the luggage at the back of the bike - if the bike has side bags and a top case, the aerodynamics change, so when slowing down, with no throttle, the front wheel starts shaking. The first time when I discovered that, I took all my luggage down and tried the same deceleration - no shaking at all.

The second tip with the Red Tesla you mentioned stick to the middle. No don't stick in the middle the road is bearing towards the left they should have been at least 2 feet or may be 3 feet if possible. on their right but definitely not in the middle. That would have given them a clear view of any hazards coming around the bend the situation with the Tesla would not have developed.
