"Why isn't there a difficulty option" coming from someone who's never played Pokémon before really speaks volumes considering Gamefreak's insistence on dumbing down the games to specifically cater to non/casual Pokémon fans. The fact that losing to the first gym leader in Black and White presented you with a challenge that increased your determination to keep playing is so telling of how out of touch Gamefreak is it's hilarious. I won't go into all of it, but in general it's very interesting that you brought up a lot of criticisms fans themselves have of the games.
I agree. I kinda wanna try this with my friends who only know pokemon via pokemon go. I'd be interested to hear their opinions on the mainline games. 🤔
What the heck are you talking about? First off, the first gym in gen 5 is mad easy, first type is normal and second one that trumps starter. The person in this video used level 3/2 pokemon (from the first route) against pokemon 10 levels higher while he skipped trainer battles and catching stronger pokemon. Of course you would lose, as long as you don't rely on starter, you can win the first gym easily (especially since you can get a type to beat the first gyms pokemon easily). And the people here only played literally the first few hours of each game. Not really a good way to see it's full difficulty nor scope of the games (since it's rare the first boss of any game is hard). But most of all, the games have always been easy for the most part. And honestly, difficulty doesn't completely determine if a game is better for me or determines if the developers are out of touch. There are MANY easy games out there and some easier than pokemon but they still are heavily beloved. Unless you're purposely trying to convince yourself or others that a decrease in difficulty is hindering game, I don't think you're gonna have a problem. Another thing to note is a LOT of the complaints the poster actually has with the game are fixed by sword/shield.
No, it really doesn't. The comment is coming from an adult who is more interested in games like GTA (based on the channel's content) and is not the target demographic for this game. It's not Game Freak's responsibility to make games that please everyone. They've never needed a difficulty option before, and they never need to going forward. If you find the games too easy, play something else. Easy as that.
@@EvyDevy I'm not denying the games have always been easy to some degree (especially for seasoned Pokemon players) but BW are arguably more difficult than anything we've had since. Obviously this player was going to lose, but was through a lack of experience more than anything else and the first gym is clearly not challenging. That's exactly the point I'm trying to make though. The games are easy (to you and I) but can present difficulties to newer players. Losing made this player want to carry on, so why would Gamefreak want to make it even easier, alienating long time fans and boring new players my making it a cake walk? The player even said the only part of the games they found interesting were the gyms (regular trainers could be mowed down with ease) because they actually presented somewhat of a challenge and prompted some form of critical thinking. This surely goes against Gamefreak's philosophy of making the games easier to entice newer or casual players? But heck, having said that they are generally easy, back in RSE they had that entire complex saga of finding and obtaining the Regi trio which even most adults would find difficult these days. Don't tell me you breezed through that ordeal at any stage of your life without help from the internet. And yes, I will readily admit that difficulty does not make or break a game, Animal Crossing being a prime example of this. SOME things were fixed in SS like the immersion of the world with wild area and overworld mons, but they were poorly implemented. The same old formula but with different graphics, which the player complained about and has been a feature of Pokemon since the 90s, is still highly prevalent: you get a fire/water/grass starter, find a dog, bird and rodent Pokemon on the early routes, capture and train Pokemon, fight an evil team etc etc. I will admit that a decrease in difficulty does hinder the game for me and a lot of long time Pokemon fans for that matter. Long time players have been alienated by the decrease in difficulty over the years. If Gamefreak no longer wants to cater to that audience, then fine, I or anyone else can't convince them otherwise. I still love Pokemon despite what I've said (there's not a 'bad' Pokemon game in my opinion), I just think criticims of the game should not be shrugged off every time someone has an issue with them.
@@virusanity4168 Fair enough, I will admit that the player in this video is the last person these games are aimed at and Gamefreak can target and please whomever they like. But surely it would be beneficial to at least acknowledge that alienating long time players who are invested in your franchise isn't a good move. Granted, they aren't the largest demograpahic of the game by a long stretch and fincancially it doesn't make sense to cater to them, just the casual masses. However, it's possible to achieve a balance and surely this would not be as strenous as an effort as has been made out. BW2 had a difficulty setting implemented which did make the player jump through hoops to activate it so they've shown they are capable of pleasing, and wanting to appease, more than one section of players (a lot of people have called for this feature to return may I add). Clearly Gamefreak's sentiment on this matter has changed however and it's their perogative, so who am I to judge. It would just be nice if long time players who've supported the franchise throughout recieved some level of recognition in terms of their complaints about the direction the games are headed in. And I still do love playing the games because difficulty is not what entices me to or makes or breaks a Pokemon game for me. I personally play for the bonds I form with my Pokemon, exploring the region and the music mainly. But it sure as hell makes them fair more interesting and satisfying to play when there's some semblence of critical thinking involved. Again, I admit, this type of thinking comes from a minority.
@@garenthal9638 We have all the raw footage, but we took a lot of breaks. We will have him play a full game for a future vid and remember to save everything.
@@senatorarmstronger475 I'll bite to keep papa nintendo off their back. Ninty can be cruel when it comes to stuff like that, which im 100% sure is why they said it and there was humor behind it. But that seems like more effort than necessary. Not that it matters, but the only reason I push back is that the video is sharp as hell with true whites and blacks and stretched with no border (cardinal sin imo, but to each their own). Considering the Super gameboy for snes, pokemon stadium for n64 and the transfer pak, and gameboy player for gamecube all produce a standard definition video signal maxed at 480i (thats being generous for the other 2 options, and we are assuming he has the $300 gamecube component cables or a knock off hdmi solution), 4:3 with some sort of border which takes away from the image quality of the base game even more (and would have to be cropped out in post production to achieve what we just saw), and the above sources applying the gameboy "color" pallet of everything having combos of red and green for red versions "color" gimmick pre gameboy color games (for the most part, I'm unfamiliar with the super gameboy snes solution, very familiar with the latter 2), vs black and white defaults that most emulators run, I would say its possible, but a statistically low outcome. If they are using a clone console like a retron 5, that just dumps the rom from the original cart, and you are just emulating software from the original source on different hardware anyways. if they are using a 3ds with a modded capture card (please let anyone in the universe know if they have one of these for sale, like not even kidding I want one so bad) the version on those games is just a rom running on a gameboy emulator nintendo created in-house anyways. To channel Rick and Morty for the latter 2 options, that's just emulation with extra steps. There would have to be some things going on behind the scenes that would be entirely inconvenient when compared to having a 16mb file on a program that can run on any pc, found easily on the internet in a matter of minutes, and easily captured at any resolution you choose. Granted, your upressing a very low base quality, but thats why you see such pixel perfect video, when putting your snes to your capture card could only do that in the sweetest of dreams. We are talking some sort of modded hardware witchcraft doing something that a pc from 1998 could handle with ease. why go through the effort for the game thats, by far, the easiest to emulate, and the one that has the most merit in doing so, seeing as the original cartridges are beginning to either fail or lose their saves, and was released on a console with no backlight, and the only convenient way to send said video to screen would be with cords that would lower/darken the image and not produce those true whites and blacks simply due to the limitations of their time? I’d go as far to say there’s no way, at the very least the 3 original Nintendo produced options to bring this game to television or capture card would produce an image in the state it’s in. But again, I'll bite, if nintendo is reading, they didnt emulate any of the games, please leave them alone.
I legit want full gameplay of this guy, I really want him to go and see a full pokemon story and start to get addicted to the story and the universe of pokemon, maybe black & white could be the better option for this guy to play! This sentence hurt my soul. I feel like newer players just don't have the knowledge to just things like that. "Lol do you expect them to animate 800+ walking animations?". They... litteraly already did that.
@Raviz, Cherry Mae it started as a two fold idea. 1) They couldn't make all the Pokemon fit on the small memory of the first cartridges. Having the game hold extra data for more Pokemon locations just wasn't an option. It takes less space to just have their battle data. 2) they were collectors and remembered how fun it was to trade with friends and wanted to simulate that same feeling in Pokemon so made two versions to incentivize trading. By now I'm pretty sure it's just because it's a Pokemon tradition and it increases sales.
@@tuckinatorinator787 pokemon locations are nothing more than a lookup table. The stuff that actually takes up a lot of space are sprites, animations etc. The maximum Cartridge size of the gameboy was 8 MB, and Pokemon Red/Blue fits on a 1MB cartridge. Even if they didn't upgrade cartridge size, a single entry in the lookup table probably is a byte big (this is pure speculation, but since it comfortably fits in a byte and those are nice and easy to program with, it's probably what they used. Even if they didn't upgrade cartridge size they could probably fit about a hundred more pokemon locations in there, and if they moved to a bigger cartridge they could add in over 7000 more locations. In other words, don't talk about stuff you don't know or understand. The second point was a nice gimmick back in the 90s, but nowadays in the age of the internet it's just a scam
@@tuckinatorinator787 all the Pokemon DO fit on the cartridge. They can be traded in and fought against. It's just Encounter tables and that basically takes zero space
I believe at first their intentions were really to get people to trade Pokemon but after first gen they understood people would buy both versions and they made more money that way so they took advantage of that ahah
I would say there intentions were always money which wasn't bad they basically almost went bankrupt with the first game. Honestly I think it was "Hey people are still buying 3 versions of the game . ." "Should we just make one" "Well there willing so...." and that's how capitalism works honestly if people early on didn't buy both this wouldn't have become a trend.

The world of Pokemon is like How to Train Your Dragon, it's more practical and humane to tame some, battle with each other for practice, and go about your day as normal than to hunt them to extinction for your own safety.
I'd be really interested in seeing Trip continue through one of these files to the end of the story, the fact they were playing the first half hour of gameplay in each really skews the experience of what the games are meant to be like, as no matter which generation you're playing that part of the game is still keeping you on the tutorial railroads before things really start to open up
I mean Black and White in particular DOES have a really good story, but when you only get as far as the first gym you haven't really touched on it yet.

I feel like we missed out by not having him play gen 3 somewhere in there. From how you're introduced to the region, to how you get your starter, to being the only game to give you a father figure, I feel like it would've been a refreshing enough introduction to maybe pique and keep his curiosity. Though with that being said, and not to milk this idea, but I would absolutely love to see you guys play through the entirety of a single Pokémon game together. I want to see Trip's reaction to even more Pokémon he's never seen before. And when the game's finished, please critique it. Rip the game to shreds for all I care, just give credit where it's due. It would make and interesting viewpoint to see someone's opinion who's never played a full game complete one, in my honest opinion.

That is an actually informative comment! As for No. 3) That's the appeal of the franchise for me (and my friends & aquaintances) too: I think of myself not as a "trainer" but my head-canon is that I am a "Conqueror", it does not fit the setting at all... Was playing Renegade Platinum (rom hack) just an hour ago and Lyra after beating her team joined me in a cave exploration, when talked to she said "They must be so great 'cause you're friendly to them right?" And with my head-canon I be like "Naaah gal, I came to conquer Sinnoh, not to love it."
I agree with most of what you said, except for number 3. I agree that the stories on paper are not good, but in the modern games it boosts the appeal of the games. Some dunk on the cutscenes and scripted events, but I think that they are really cool, like visiting another dimension in Platinum, summoning a legendary beast in HGSS, figthing ninjas on a flying pirate ship in BW2, . I think that those spectacle moments are what people remember most of the story, and how this narrative is wolven into the other two main threads of the game, those being you becoming the champion and finding pokemon, what makes or breaks the story. I think thats one of the reason gen 1 is so beloved, the plot of the first game is really simple, but its an A in how it was executed in a GameBoy, while gen 8, having a plot as by the numbers as gen 1, it was executed as a GameBoy story, on a modern day console.

Just 7 minutes into the video and this is so great. P.s. If you want to see Pokémon die and attack people, you should take a look at the Manga (Pokémon Adventures)
The fact that someone who doesn’t play Pokémon says “they have so much and don’t do much with it” tells you everything you need to know about Gamefreak. They tried making the games with more older fans in mind with Gen 5 aand it became the worst selling Generation of all time because fans aren't into that, so that's why they aim they'r games more at kids...
@Dancing Israeli EXACTLY! Gen 5 just had a bit of a better story but as a game for more mature audiences??? No way that was their attempt at that, it was still a kids game. Their main priority has always been making things appealing to kids and THAT’S the infuriating part that they need to acknowledge their fans who have grown up. You can’t give us the same kitty game and expect us to still be into it. ThTs why People need to stop supporting Pokémon until they give us something worth purchasing.
@Dancing Israeli Bigger focus on story, more mature themes, older player characters, lot less kid oriented style/look, details most kids don't care about (like how every gym leader actually has a job besides being a gym leader), focus on online website for getting new Hidden abilities for competitive players to use, lot of post game and list goes on.

Yeah, like "beating the game for a harder mode" is pretty standard practice especially in older games, but those are usually for game that are shorter or more arcade style, even 'mini-games'.

I'll bite to keep papa nintendo off their back.

And the execution was just poor from both how you unlock it and when you play it because of the new XP system Gen 5 games use...
Or multiple saves

"Lol do you expect them to animate 800+ walking animations?".
They... litteraly already did that.
1:15 Because it IS a scam, Trip.
Welcome to the gaming industry
It was a genious concept either way
@Raviz, Cherry Mae it started as a two fold idea.
Well yeah, otherwise the dual versions thing would have disappeared as soon as they introduced the GTS

@@finnafishfl No problem. People would not have as much problem with the linearity if they had a good story to keep them.

The fact that someone who doesn’t play Pokémon says “they have so much and don’t do much with it” tells you everything you need to know about Gamefreak. @Matthew Noyes it’s so sad their loyal fan base have been begging for YEARS for Pokémon to give us something more challenging and epic that is intended for adults.

Doing an entire Pokemon playthrough just to unlock a "harder" mode is tedious and defeats the purpose. Not to mention the idiocy of locking "Easy mode" behind beating the game, or making easy mode and hard mode version exclusive for some reason.
@@KeroseneZanchu Not to mention if you had White 2, you unlocked Easy Mode instead of Challenge Mode. You had to get someone who completed Black 2 to trade you access to the Challenge Mode.
