By the point in the series the movie came out, he had accomplished a number of noteworthy achievements (such as beating Lt. Surge and getting the best of Sabrina) that would have been talked about, so it makes that trainers like the guy at the beginning of the movie would want to seek him out for a battle.

Alright. Fun with the localisation changes time!
1: Doctor Fuji wasn't just trying to clone and improve Mew in the original. He was trying to save his terminally ill daughter. She talked to Mewtwo a lot and gave him his world view and tried to teach him the moral that comes out in the end. But she died.
2: Mew didn't say the "true strength comes from the heart" thing. Instead it was something like "Your pokémon are just clones, the originals are just as good if not better." So there was no good guy in the fight between them, they were both kind of jerks, and Ash got them *both* to back down.

While it's occasionally disputed, most fans put this episode between The Pi Kahuna and Make Room for Gloom in the anime.
This is because it HAS to be after Poke-Corral where he escapes and before the league starts(which is a narrow period of about 15 episodes). New Island is right next to Sea-Foam Island according to an official anime map, Ash spends two episodes ON Seafoam Island right after Poke-Corral, and then there's a timeskip where we next see him back on Pallet Town and he's never on an island again that season. Given he starts The Movie near the water not far for New Island he HAS to be on Seafoam, which means this is probably a day or two after the surfing Pikachu incident.

The scientist who created Mewtwo was actually trying to clone his deceased daughter and when Mewtwo was little he psychically linked with the scientist daughter along with the cloned versions of Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. They traveled around and laughed and was told of the legend that supposedly tears had the power to make miracles. Sadly the girls link broke and the scientist wasn’t able to clone his daughter and Mewtwo was left alone until he broke out of the cage. Apparently the US didn’t like the whole miracles with tears thing and decided to scrap it all together and put it as a deleted scene in DVD’s as “Mewtwo’s Origins.”

I loved this movie as a kid and still do as an adult. A few years back, for the 20th anniversary I believe, they re-aired this movie in select theaters and I 100% went to watch it. The theater was almost exclusively filled with 20 and 30-something adults who also adored the movie and we were all crying near the end. Also I think there was a 3D remake of this movie? I haven’t seen it but when the remake came out, they actually added the clone Charizard, clone Venusaur, and clone Blastoise to the Pokémon Go mobile game for a limited time (as well as a redesign of Armored Mewtwo)
Also in the vein of stealing other people’s Pokémon: there actually were two Pokémon games on the GameCube (Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness) in which your character steals Pokémon from other trainers. Those games were much darker and had a more mature tone to the story. They do have some of the issues of older adventure-style games with occasional unclear flows for progression so a game guide might feel necessary at some parts but, even so, I highly recommend trying those out! I’ve been hoping that they might remake them or surprise us with a 3rd game for years (as the stories between the games were also linked) 🙏
The Pokémon movies are so good, I’d love to see you guys react to more! The dvd release for this movie actually also came with a bonus short called Mewtwo’s Origin that relates to the start of the movie, which I recommend checking out! I haven’t seen all of the movies but, of the ones I’ve seen, they’re all pretty great. The next several that I remember and would love to see reactions for are 2000, the Third movie, 4Ever, Heroes, Jirachi Wish Maker, Destiny Deoxys, and Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. Also! A few of these movies actually originally aired in theaters with fun unrelated Pokémon Shorts at the start, so a few of those might be fun to check out (albeit the shorts are much more silly and most of them don’t have much dialogue, as it’s usually just groups of Pokémon interacting without their trainers)

Also yeah the anime and manga essentially have two entirely different canons. The anime is basically Ash going to a region, dragging the first two people to folllow his journey in that region, beating the gyms, defeat the bad team, and then go to the pokemon league tournament to become champion. Usually he ends up at the end parting ways and meeting up with his mother along with meeting with old friends.
The manga has multiple protagonists and is based on the events of the games, so the first set of volumes in the manga are based on Pokemon Red/Blue with the charcter Red as the main protagonist for that region. After they finish with Red becoming champion, the next volume turns to Pokemon Yellow with that storyline with Yellow as the protagonsist. This goes on and on, also all the stories are interconnected, so there are portions in canon of characters like Gold and Red meeting as well as events that are completely original to the manga like with the character Wally having a more important role in the manga even though the video games only have you fight and talk to him like three times. So some characters do have very dark moments, but it also presents a much more serious tone to allow for more tension in the scene.
The overall plot of the manga though does follow the same objectives as Ash with one of the main characters going to becoming the champoin, but most of the time they also have other main characters embrace a lot of the gimmicks and things unique to that specific region. In addition to that they tend to flesh out the characters a lot better. If you read the manga you are immediantely able to tell the easy ones like Red is an energetic competitive character, but is quite lenient with how he does things. His rival Blue is more patient yet also competitive, although he is very strict with whatever he does. They have a sort of Goku and Vegeta, or Superman and Batman dynamic. In addition to that just about every battle presented is important to either character development or to the plot.

Here's some fun facts about the Japanese version of this movie:
    1. There's a cut prologue scene that shows Mewtwo's backstory and shows why he has the behavior that's in the movie. Seriously, it really puts into perspective what Mewtwo's character is supposed to be.
    2. Mew is more of a jerk in how they view the clones. Saying that they are inferior and should be destroyed. The complete opposite of Mewtwo in terms of viewpoints, but the exact same in mindset. Truly 2 sides of the same coin.
    3. When the originals and the clones start fighting each other, and the trainers start saying how "fighting is wrong", which is very strange considering that's one of the biggest aspects of this franchise. In the original Japanese version, the message was more akin "Whether they're originals or clones, they're all living beings that deserve to live". And that's what makes their fight so heartbreaking, because the Pokemon are fighting for their right to live. Obviously, the US saw this as too dark for kids, so they dumbed it down.
