Toyota dealers are going to bend you over so far if you really want one of these. 10,000 examples is basically nothing. That's a tiny fraction of RAV4 production, and you can hardly find one of those, especially the hybrid. As to the Prius' appliance character, they've always been appliances. My Gen II was awful to drive, but it was by far the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Even two teenagers couldn't kill it. They could ding it up pretty badly, though.
If you willing to wait 5 to 6 month , you can order one for MSRP . I will get mine deliver July . Toyota does not offer any financial incentives for this one. I will get SE Prime for 37,000 on the road.
It should be noted that you can use the extremely hard plastic on the dashboard as a nail file.. so youre saving like 50 cents there over most cars though.
Yep, pretty much any car in this sector is a commuting appliance. Maybe as time goes on they will ramp production, but since other car companies have tied up battery contracts for years to come unless Toyota starts making their own battery factories they are going to be supply constrained for the forseable future, which is a shame. The last time a PHEV this good came out was the Gen 2 Volt. In fact the price for those Gen 2s have just been going up around here as time goes on, who would have thought a commuting appliance was an investment!
Prius sales are at a decade low. This year or next Tesla will pass Toyota in sales on their home turf, California. Toyota is done except for rental and fleet as they actually have others make a sister car for them(i.e. Subaru, BMW...)
Honestly the only downside to me is the EXTREMELY limited availability. I'd grab one of these in a heartbeat if I could actually find one in a configuration that I like

@@alexstromberg7696 Hey, guess what everyone does with every car 90% of the time? The Prius is also ideal for road trips and taxi duty. But yeah, if you want a Texas Mile car, don't buy a BRZ or a Prius. @@ilovebanks1526 I get what you're saying, since I'm literally in my Miata right now. However I think a disappointing number of people derive their car enthusiasm entirely from spec sheet performance. A large percentage of modern performance cars drive like 500hp Priuses with uncomfortable springs. This is the kind of person who scoffs at the idea of getting a BRZ because it's not powerful, and gets offended by the idea of a Prius ever crossing their 3/9 line. These are the kinds of people who need to be reminded that even a 2001 Prius WILL do felony speeds, so worrying about getting passed by one is pointless. As you point out, the real goal is engagement, which IMO you get about the same amount of in a Prius or an M4 at same speeds. That's why I lean towards cars like Miata, BRZ, or even really slow stuff like Mk.I VWs.

Either way, the 5th gen hybrid system in the new Prius probably has a very good chance of being put into other Toyota vehicles, which will probably make those vehicles awesome

That comment around 6:40 about "getting on a list now if you want one" is still true today. For all model levels. Not only that, Toyota has put a stop-sale on the Prius until they work out some sort of issue (I was told it was trunk-related). My local dealership had 2-3 coming "sometime in the fall" and we were able to choose one and put a deposit down on it (we went with the XLE AWD).
We got an old Prius for my wife, and the first thing I did was ditch the gas mileage tires for tires with real traction. Now it gets 45 mpg instead of 48, but it also doesn't slide all over the road and it handles much better than you'd think. I'd be very interested to hear the handling review of this car with really good tires on it, and if it gets 37 miles of EV range and then 48 mpg insted of 43 miles and then 53 mpg, who cares?
The Hybrid is better and won.t leave you stranded in the middle of no where and mine can give 50-55 in fairly flat areas without high head winds and bad traffic, mine is 10 years old Hybrid with 180,000 miles and ZERO major problems...
@@nickiemcnichols5397 I know. That's why they got a Prius. In my case, my wife wanted a commuter with perfect reliability and, of course, great gas mileage. With better all season tires, the car's strengths remained strong and its weaknesses were somewhat less weak.
I hate EV's and have laughed and mocked them from the get-go. I saw one of these in the flesh before I knew what I was looking at and my honest first-impressions were very favourable - it's quite an attractive car. Then I saw it was a Prius and I was genuinely gobsmacked. Suddenly, I see the future for these things in a way that doesn't get up my nose.
I’m so sick of all the lifted station wagons (SUVs) that people think are so cool and buy by the gazillions. This Prius is a refreshing, modern vehicle that I hope will change the market back to cars.
I owned the RAV4 Prime with the same power train and powertrain options and it’s awesome…I loved being able to hold it in EV mode when driving locally, and then have the engine charge the motor while on long drives on the highway so I had EV power for local roads (which is a better driving experience than an ICE). Also reallllly like that you can keep it in EV only mode (I think it’ll stay in it up to 80mph unless some other extreme things are happening) even when you floor it.
Were I in the market for a new daily this would be very high up on the list--looks great, reasonable power, great efficiency, cargo room, and will last forever--Toyota did a great job IMO and now having seen a few on the roads in-person I think they'll sell out very, very quick. Thanks as always for the great video, cheers from CA!
I would own one of these. I commute 44 miles round trip every day. I know the EV range would probably be 20-35 miles or so but every little bit would help. And it looks incredible in my opinion.
You might make it; it depends a lot on your weather conditions. My 2017 Prime is rated for 25 EV miles, and I routinely achieve that and more unless it's very hot or very cold (New England: hot summers, cold winters). If you're a hard gas, hard brake style driver (like my husband- speeding, tailgating, zooming up to stop signs, etc. ), you likely won't see 44 miles, but if you optimize by hypermiling, you'll likely get more than 44 (again, depending on seasonal temperatures).
A few years ago, we replaced Prius with Clarity PlugIn. Bigger, smoother, quieter and more efficient. Haven’t driven the new Prius but have a feeling that the discontinued Clarity is still at least as good if not better than the new Prius. Clarity was a car before its time. 😉
(Slightly) longer range on the Clarity too. I wish SG had gotten to review it (and its crazy suspension 😆) and draw from that when evaluating the Prius Prime. To me as a former Clarity Touring owner, it still wins as the better proposition overall.
i wonder if its much worse. its big diameter but lot thinner, so mass maybe not worse, but availability of the tire maybe a problem ... but i think its gonanbecome a more common tire not just because toyota is popularizing it, but also because itll appear in other cars because its connection to the car is higher up, giving more ground clearance without the connecting part sticking out under the car, so areoydnamics will be better. thinness also helps areodynamics and low rolling ressitence and lessfrictionwhen turning (agility, less tire wear), and it looks like art deco dramatic sports car big wheel on outside if not paying attention to thinnesss of the wheel when its turning(most people arnt paying much attention).

With tax incentives, the Model 3 LR is now cheaper and you get so much more and don't have to wait 6-9 months to get one and or deal with markups. None of the Toyota dealers near me will sell this without added markups or forcing you to buy expensive add-ons (paint and upholstery protection, nitrogen, window tint, etc). The visibility (lack of) is a major sticking point for me. If you wanted fuel economy there are other options like Accord or Camry Hybrid that give you nearly as good MPG, while being better in almost every other way. You'll pay the same price too. I haven't seen these on the road in NY yet.
Two things I don't like is........ 1) the fixed glass roof. I want the roof to open. And 2) I don't see the rear wiper on the back window. I had a 2nd gen Prius and I'm a person who used the rear wiper. Really helped with vision.

At about 8:19 or 8:53, that is the catalytic converter just totally exposed! Look at 8:45, you could easily take out the converter to manifold bolts and easily cut the pipe after the converter with a chain pipe cutter. As a current Prius Gen 2 owner who has had a converter stolen, I don't see any indication Toyota made the converter difficult to steal on this Prius.
Apparently Toyota has chosen an alternative strategy to reduce theft: "Toyota Prius Chief Engineer Satoki Oya told PopSci that a reduced quantity of rare metals in the newest generation catalytic converter might make it less appealing to thieves. Although looks-wise, it wouldn’t appear too different."
My folks have a 2010 prius with almost 200k miles that is ageing poorly and i've been trying to get them to replace it with a newer prius. But these newer generation model all sacrifice visibility and useability for these features that everyone wants apparently. The older car might be a rattling tin can but it's got great glass visibility and a simple radio. The massive touch screen and included blindspots just scare them away unfortunately.
Honestly a base 4th gen would be a better buy for them. Same great visibility, and better refinement and reliability updates under the hood. Should be fairly cheap to find now too.
I drive an older hyundai ioniq, it's basically the Korean prius of last gen. Honestly this type of car is my favorite thing to drive, I've driven trucks, crossovers, a v8 grand cherokee, big sedans and honestly was never happier. And it's amazing how everyone who's been in it has absolutely loved it and I've had much "cooler" cars that got much more mellow reactions. It has a "stereotype" but people don't care in reality. Only reason I didn't get the prius was the price difference on the used market, I didn't feel much of a difference between the ioniq and prius.

From Mclaren, Porsche ferrari Lamborghini BMW Mercedes or audi.. Which car has ever done such a thing?
I don't know that Toyota has much choice. They're independent businesses that are free to set prices, and that's a fact that has bedeviled all the automakers except Tesla (who's fought titanic battles against state dealer associations even though they don't have any franchised dealers to begin with). This is why Toyota imposed very strict behavioral standards on any dealer who wanted in on Lexus when they founded it in 1989, and they tried and failed to do the same with Scion.

Problem with it right now is without dealer discounts or Toyota incentives, with a higher MSRP, and no federal incentive, this would cost $12,000 more than people paid for the previous gen. Also other OEMs have gotten around battery production problems. They just planned ahead. Toyota is having production problems for all of their cars. They can't blame batteries anymore.

Motor heads have other fish to fry. Electric steering doesn't have great feedback. When the battery gets discharged your horsepower takes a big dip. Not a problem for the average driver.
@@tim3172 as an owner of a Corolla Hybrid, why would you say it's unacceptably slow? I spent almost 15 years in a Yaris and it was approx the same performance as my Corolla. It's certainly no race car but it is by no means unacceptable.
Almost every dealer on this: MSRP +7500-10000, doesn't want to pay it? NP just go away.
What a great Prius. I would have NEVER even looked at one and now I'm test driving them.

It's fun to think about the remote possibility of Toyota getting crazy and building an AWD GR Prius, which if well-executed, would be a REALLY interesting car.
And sell a Subaru Wilderness version with 9” ground clearance. 😁
Let's be honest that would be a huge win for Subaru. They are sooooo far behind in efficient powertrains. Fun as hell though

Imagine owning a brz and get passed by this on the highway. Great review as always guys.
Priuses have been 100mph+ cars for a while now. If you want to pass everyone on the highway, basically any car will do it. If someone buys a BRZ to do Texas highway drag racing, they're a moron. That's a twisty road car.
@@JETZcorp pruises aren't a car for anything but commuting.
@@alexstromberg7696 Hey, guess what everyone does with every car 90% of the time? The Prius is also ideal for road trips and taxi duty. But yeah, if you want a Texas Mile car, don't buy a BRZ or a Prius.
Still though, even if you do drive a 1,200hp ZL1 with nitrous, unless you're actively doing Cannonball pace on the 405, a Prius can match your speed over the road. Fast cars aren't fast point-to-point unless you're prepared to break laws and have lawyers on retainer.
@@JETZcorp Speeding isn't as dramatic as you make it sound. People most of the time don't get caught, and if they do, it's a simple speeding ticket. Cars for enthusiasts are about the thrill and engagement of the drive. Priuses are appliances. They now have a decent 0-60 but that's not where joy or engagement comes from. You are correct that every car commutes 90% of the time but fail to mention the difference in driving dynamics/fun/engagement or anything else that makes a fun car fun to drive as they commute. To say they do the same thing just as well is disingenuous otherwise there would only be singular CAR to buy. That being said, I would consider the new Prius as a new car buy for a long-term commuter because that's what they're built for. And the BRZ/86 I would consider if I want to have fun every day I commute to work. Choices, choices.
I see the 2017 Chevy Volt. What a shame that GM failed to sell/explain what they had.

There will be no GR Prius lol! That's an online joke.
That concept reveal at lemans looks more like a race car, not a gr prius
Agreed, whoever did the design for this needs to do the mk5 GR body kit of the BMW Z4.
Either way, the 5th gen hybrid system in the new Prius probably has a very good chance of being put into other Toyota vehicles, which will probably make those vehicles awesome
If they'd just reveal a sensible production target on their hybrids I'd be happy, instead of these ludicrously low quantities they've been shipping.
I went and sat in one of these because we were looking for a fuel efficient second car, and I VERY quickly learned that if you're over 6 feet tall (I'm 6'2"), it's incredibly difficult to get in and out of. I bashed my knees on the steering column, while pulling my back and bashing my head on the roof. Honestly, I had less trouble getting in and out of a Lamborghini Huracan I rented to drive on the track in Vegas. Looks great, but sacrifices were made. We bought an Accord Hybrid instead - I actually fit in it easily lol

Great review as always Mark. The bummer for me is lack of AWD, they should have put the motors to drive the rears.
I will buy 2 in cash if the dealer waives the $10K+ markup. Standard Prius they want $5k worth of “paint protection package”. This is SF Bay Area.

Honestly a base 4th gen would be a better buy for them. Same great visibility, and better refinement and reliability updates under the hood. Should be fairly cheap to find now too.

I can't wait to buy one in 10 years when I can afford it and not have to wait on a list
now I feel guilty buying three Porsches
@@cbatiau2528 I just bought a 1998 Nissan Sentra with band paint and smashed in bumpers, all I could afford. 😂
@@fortheloveofnoise If it was more than $800, then it was overpriced
60% more power than it's predecessor, 3s faster to from 0-60mph than it's predecessor and a hole lot sexier as well.... Tell me which other car brands have managed that for 1 generation to the next. From Mclaren, Porsche ferrari Lamborghini BMW Mercedes or audi.. Which car has ever done such a thing?
I saw one with a $10,000 markup. Toyota is allowing its dealers to destroy the brand.
Large dash reminds me a bit of the GM APV (Lumina/TransPort/Silhouette)
Don't mis-capitalize the Trans Sport! ugh! UGH!
the guardian gray color looks absolute amazing. so now it has gas efficiency, looks AND power....something it was lacking before and discouraged me from getting a prius...
just feels like the main line sedans (camry, accord) and compacts (civic and corolla) have hybrids that do the same mpg and cost less. Not sure where prius fits in anymore, it looks good I guess but the space is compromised
Those models don't have a Prime version PHEV.
@@ytj22 and they also cost significantly less. you'd have to do a hundred thousand miles to offset the cost of the Prime PHEV.
@@ytj22 mate the prius prime, in the cheapest trim before dealer markups, is 1.5k cheaper than a 3SR after incentives.
So yeah.
Plugin hybrids are basically dead cause they cost as much as a BEV, have higher maintenance and running costs and only make sense if you can charge at home.
Thank you for still making these honest unbiased videos.
We need to see a drag race between the Prius and the GR86 🙏🙏
-- that's gonna be awful...and i'm here for it.
@@jlui21 if you search prius vs gr86 there's a track day video and also a Japanese video which has a standing start race
I remember the big "cab forward" push in the early 90s. The Eagle Vision TSi was another example.
I just saw that you haven't reviewed a Tesla since the model 3 two years ago. I wonder if it's interesting enough to review at this point (mid 2023) with the hardware changes and the general reduction of cult-ish fan behavior.
I love the 4k HDR and the blown out highlights in the shop lmao love you guys
I have driven the new Prius and don't like it. The instrument cluster is weird, the cabin is too small, and the seats are uncomfortable. For that kind of money the Camry hybrid is a way better buy.
dude please!!! There are far worse drivers in Subaru wagons and lifted F-250's! Both extremes in respective camps of owners
@@jamesmedina2062 I drive an Ioniq hybrid i'm definitely a hybrid fan, its just my observation that I don't like the new Prius it has nothing to do with the drivers.
As a Chevy Volt owner, this car is very appealing to me! Hopefully they will sell a bunch.
Me too. Love my G1 Volt but this thing is the next level.
Is there enough room for your estrogen and progesterone meds you take daily ?? Is your butt cream hemorrhoid cream or just waterless lube you love ??
If the new Prius at least drives like the Corolla currently does, than this would probably be the ultimate daily (in all but cost). The Prime would be faster than just about any pedestrian mass market car to 60, and even standard versions would be capable to be on or over par. It really does look great, and I think at the very least some of the interior sacrifices will be digestible for most households
I’ve owned a 2016 accord coupe, now a 2007 Audi a4 2.0t and I’d consider this Prius as an upgrade. Faster than the accord, On paper it’s 0-60 is the same as my Audi with the same hp. To me it’s worth sacrificing the turbo noises, superior handling, luxury interior, 22mpg for Toyota reliability with the same on paper performance and 50mpg
This is THE best Toyota Prius Prime reviews and I watched a lot :) The only thing I wonder what happens to the "fun" factor if I fit 215 or 225 tires on it.
Slam it down to the ground, get some crazy offset wheels, loud exhaust. JDM for lyfe brah.
For the first time, I can recommend a Prius to a friend and not cringe. It's a viablely decent car and stacks up really well to the ICE sedan competition. For the price, it's not all that bad on the inside or outside.
They can't blame batteries anymore.
it's way nicer than the previous gen and this is norm in terms of pricing. a new non turbo mazda3 HB is 14k more than wife's last gen ..and it's the exact same drivetrain. at least the prius is massively improved whereas mazda downgraded it with the torsion bean and still hiked prices by 50% lol
You guys have the best car reviews on youtube.
This is the first Prius that doesn't automatically set off my 'Roid Rage and hit the driver with rolling coal like a coked up gorilla. I now feel like a well integrated human being. Thank you, Toyota.
that was funny but pretty self-effacing too
Cab forward a concept Chrysler grow from the times it owned Lomborgini. I used to have a Chrysler voyager with Koni shocks. Loved the drive position on that boxy van. Great presentation, thank you!
Hi Mark- How does Prius Prime compare to the regular (non- plugin) Prius? Please do a comparison video between the two models sometime in the future.
