Sukuna was lonely at the top as the King of Curses. He believed Strength is the only thing needed to rule and stay on top of the hierarchy. Everybody who challenged him was actually challenging this belief (Yorozu, Kashimo and even Gojo Satoru) and teach him about Love and be his equal to kill his loneliness. Then Sukuna just ends up winning and killing them and be like "Nahhh, Strength still prevails, no one understands how I feel, Love is stupid." and goes back to being Evil, Bored and Lonely.
That bit you said about Sukuna uncaringly sacrificing parts of himself so the rest could live, really give credence to the whole twin theory, with sukuna probably be half or a conjoined twin and killed his other half to become the strongest.
I just realised something, that when yuji was first introduced in the series his physical prowess was shown even though he didn't ate the finger at the time. His strength was already foreshadowed. So, when he stood against sukuna's slashes and jumped from building to building he was using his own strength. I think Yuji is next Gojo

The only thing i think u misunderstood is that: Sukuna doesnt need to understand what love is, because he already does, he gives love to those who want to battle him, he doesn't feel loneliness like the other 2 (Gojo and Hajime), he just does what he wants to do at the moment.
Reread Gojo’s description of Sukuna on chapter 236, because I think that gives more credence to who Sukuna actually is, because Sukuna in many ways is an unreliable narrator.

This in a weird way implies that he is suffering as well.. but he gets his rocks off knocking others off the web in which everyone is caught in.. it is what gives him purpose, to embody the spider in the web.. even if he is in actuality just another insect trapped in it.
