Another UA-camr, Doggy Daycare Farm Trips, from Sydney Australia, has a 32-acre dog day care and training facility. He has installed 3 kilometers of snake fencing around the property. He occasionally will find a harmless tree snake which comes over the fence via the treetops. He even has a video about the capture of one. He's a certified snake handler in addition to being a certified alpha dog trainer. He uses gentle methods, and rehabs problem dogs. He's now rehabbing 4 dogs that were under death sentences and socializing pups from backyard breeders. No dogs have been bitten by taipans, browns or tigers since he's operated the farm, nor have they been seen by the staff. So, snake proofing done right can provide a safe haven for your pets and family.
As always, great job. I get asked daily about “snake proofing”. I would also add; no less than 2’ high 3’ is better, buried at base at least 3-5” and be sure it’s installed on the outside not the inside of the existing fence. And one last thing. I like having the top edge folded outward creating a “catch point” for any snake trying to go over the top. Be safe and thanks.
all valid, however the many rats, mice and moles create many paths below any "fencing" installed, even fencing installed on concrete footings a full 24" below grade. no simple solutions there and remain easy entry points. I am talking from experience, not theory

If anyone is interested in doing this, i highly recommend getting the Galvanized Steel mesh over the Aluminum mesh. Snake proofing includes trench work, aka burying some of the mesh underground. This will not only stop snakes, but deter armadillos.

LOL, You never know where the heck you'll end up when you click on the first UA-cam video of the day; I think that's why it's so much fun. Their "recommendations" always have some videos that my mind would never have thought to be curious about. One day I found myself watching a video that was literally about watching paint drying on a wall! Hey, Enjoy!
I live in an Australian inner city, where snakes are extremely unlikely to occur (other than in the bush and along rivers). However, for some reason, knowing about 1/4 inch mesh is very reassuring.
Thank you! My dog got bitten a few days ago. The pain she has suffered and the cost my wallet has suffer is immense. I will get this and put it up asap!
I live in New Zealand -we do not have any snakes here at all I really appreciate that we don't have to worry about being bitten by a snake and empathise with people who have to be careful living with snakes
Yeah so I'm watching cause my wife caught a baby rattlesnake this evening.. It's Sept 14th.. The dogs were going crazy.. I have fencing around the dog areas on the property. I am going to get some 1/4 inch mesh and eventually improve the bottom of the 1 inch square mesh fencing i have.. It's about 400 ft total, so it will take me a while.. not the first 'snake' we have found in the last 4 years so.. dont want the dogs to get bit..
I encourage Roadrunners to hang around by putting water out and feeding them bite sized balls of frozen hamburger meat. The Roadrunners come around in the morning and evening. Watching them go after a Rattler is very interesting to watch. Rattlers are no match for a Roadrunner. The parts of my property where dogs or people go is fenced as shown here with 1/4" mesh. The open areas that aren't cleared is where I feed the Roadrunners. They look for me and come calling as soon as I show up.
My dog was bit on the nose by a copperhead once, luckily only one fang went in (we only saw one hole) and the vet told us she would be fine because dogs have an increased immune against snake venom. Sent us on our way and just told us to watch her. Didnt seem like anything was wrong with her rest of the day.
My daughter’s friends dog was bit by a rattlesnake. She is a professional dog walker and has never taker a dog where the sneakers would be moving at that particular time of year. German Shorthair Retriever just his nose by a snake fence and bam he was hit in the fence. The snake was angry he was caught in the fence and the dog recovered but he took a long while and the snake and severe bodily injuries and had to be put down. Snakes are protected by law here as well as.
for that reason, I have installed a literal 'fire wall' around my property. it's a pipe going around all around my property, with little holes in it, which are connected to our gas main. if you light it up, it not only keeps EVERYTHING from entering your property (flames go up to 2 meters high), it also keeps your garden warm and bright, no need for an extra BBQ grille, also the kids love jumping through it. only the gas bill is a little high, but nothing is too expensive when it's about the well-being of you and your loved ones.
I used to have a cage with finches that I would put out on a shaded deck when it was warm enough, and the literature that I read before building it said that to keep out both snakes and mice, the hardware cloth needed to be 1/4" or smaller meshes. In my particular case, the finches could get out of the cage if I used 1/2" mesh, so I didn't even consider 1/2" mesh.
I don't know why this was in my recommended, but I've learnt something extremely valuable today. Thank you, kind stranger who happens to know a lot about snakes.
If it's that obvious, we wouldn't see it on 4/5 of the fence jobs that we correct, and HOAs wouldn't require 1/2" standards, which of course let baby snakes in. We agree, but many people apparently don't.
I used 1/4" fence at the drain opening in my block wall, only to have a mouse/ pack rat chew through it and push it open. I ended up leaving it in place (for the reason you demonstrated) and covering it with 1/2" fence to provide strength. I've had no problems since.
I caught a diamondback, many years ago, that ended up being pregnant. I was curious about why she wouldn’t eat. She’d bite the mice but wouldn’t eat them. Day 11 she had the babies. 3 of them. One was dead at birth. I took mom back out to the desert and let her go. I raised the babies for 2 years before letting them go as well. I accidentally found out what makes them more dangerous when I went to Michigan for my dad’s surgery. I was supposed to be gone only two weeks but ended up staying 7 weeks. As soon as I got home I fed the snakes. Normally when the mice were bitten they would run around the 6’ aquarium 2-3 minutes before falling down and not doing much more. After not eating for 7 weeks the mice fell within seconds, which I thought was odd. So I experimented with it. The longer they went without using the venom the more potent it became. This is actual science as it was repeated multiple times with identical results. 2 snakes with identical results each time. The idea that snakes can “control” their bites is also nothing more than a myth. At best there’s probably more evidence to suggest a defensive strike (spur of the moment/dry bite) vs a…time to eat bite.
I’m scared of all snakes and have my grass cut every Monday but I wanna add this and get the smallest size possible. I was wondering if it could be placed underground and have another one zip-tied etc above it as well.
Can you tell me where to get the mesh and how to apply it to a chain link fence properly. Had one last year in my back yard in Carson city nv and I have three golden retriever boys who are my world and I’m trying to do what I can to keep them safe. Thank you!!
iceboy328, Canada has rattlesnakes. Prairie, Western, Timber, Massasauga. Rattlesnakes are found up to the 60th parallel (border is 49th?). Only three recorded deaths in Canada in decades, but lots of bites. Only one in 50 million die from rattlesnake bites.
Rattlesnakes and reptiles are truly beautiful and stunning creatures, but thank you for protecting homes and families from these misunderstood creatures and risky situations with families that do not know how to work with these animals
On a regular basis I see rabbits go through chain link fence like it wasn't there. I actually saw one go through a chain link fence with a carrot crosswise in its mouth....an amazing thing to watch! When In doubt get the smaller mesh size just to be sure.
Okay, there's any number of videos of snakes climbing up walls that have just a course surface on them - never mind the ease with which they can climb up brick walls. What's to stop a snake using the coarse surface provided by the 1/4" fencing to just climb up and over? I mean, if they can climb up a mildly rendered wall, I assume the strands of wire and gaps in between would give them plenty of purchase?
The mesh is smooth, and there's nothing that their scales can grip. This is also specifically called 'rattlesnake fence' - the behavior of a small number of harmless, adept climbers is not important. Even then, the difference between a completely smooth surface and one that is textured is the difference between climbing or not. Here's a video showing some of our testing ua-cam.com/video/Z6FWrE10xps/v-deo.html
@@RattlesnakeSolutions Well, maybe harmless in your neck of the woods, not mine - I'm from Australia, capital of the world for venomous snakes! I was looking at your clip in terms of trying to snake proof my own yard - even juveniles can be quite deadly, because their venom is just as toxic as an adults - they just have less of it. When I see clips like this - ua-cam.com/video/HCHKifNwS3Q/v-deo.html or this spectacular one of a rat snake using a few random nails - ua-cam.com/video/TW0xk2ajRJE/v-deo.html and this, showing a snake climbing mesh - ua-cam.com/video/NuVE-tyoheI/v-deo.html I wonder exactly what I have to do to try and keep the snakes out. I'm guessing rattlers aren't climbers, which is why your fencing works well to keep them out. Short of building walls made of glass, you'd figure there has to be a way of building some kind of fence to keep climbing snakes out. I wish I could find one - I've lost three dogs to bites from brown snakes, which are very common in rural Australia and the second most poisonous snake in the world.
Can you recommend a company that will build a 36" + wall around my home? Afterwards I would like to hire you to cover the drainage holes with the ¼" mesh you describe in the video. Thank you!
that baby rattlesnake was so cute! I'd love to break into the snake relocation business down here in southern californa but I'm not really sure where to start. Do you need to pass a venomous handlers course or anything like that in AZ?
Perhaps, look one up and cold call. It may take a few businesses before you get a receptive response, but it will most probably happen. Being that you are in Southern California, you might also have the option of snake wranglers for films as a way to attain proper snake handling training.
I love snakes and move all my non venomous ones to safe places on my land or even under my hous. My dogs and chickens are not wise enough to leave them be so it's just to keep them safe. I love watching my water snakes, but draw the line on rattle snakes. Question Moving a snake, can it spread parasites or stickiness? Is it hateful to the snake?
As a German, my best protection from rattlesnakes is living in Germany. Rattlesnakes are quite rare in Germany, but we have bunnies that look very mean sometimes.
maybe your still on here I live in philippines I have a 6ft perimeter wall around property but how do you keep snakes out of you have a gate on a drive way or a pedestrian gate
Maybe this has been asked/answered in one of the 716 comments posted before mine so forgive me if that is true. My question is: Can rattlers [babies/adults] 'climb' wire fencing? Can they slither up it until they get to the top then drop over the otherside? I have tons of rattlers on my property; I essentially ignore them and get my 4 dogs the vaccine every year but this year I want to start a garden with mulch and I am terrified of the idea that I may dig into a rattler sleeping in the coolness under the mulch and it bites me. I plan to make my fencing with stacked [off-center] old tires touching each other [3-4 tires high] and wrapping/staking the 1/4" wire ["Hardware Cloth"] all around the bottom perimeter of the tires and stapling it to the 2 pallet gates I will be using to enter/exit the garden area [for a total of about 60 linear feet perimeter]. Since the 1/4" wire is rather pricey at Tractor Supply [5'L x 2'H for $13.10 w/taxes]; I need to know exactly how high i need to place it in hopes of being able to cut these 5' rolls down to 12 or 8" to get 10 - 15' out of each roll to keep those rattlers out. Thank You. klee
Sorry for the delay in response! They can't climb if it's put in place correctly, that is, perfectly straight vertically and without any "foot" holds to use to climb up. It also needs to be tall enough to cover about 1/2 of the rattlesnakes total length or more, and put into the ground several inches to prevent rodents from making tunnels under it. Just be careful when you dig into the mulch and use a tool with a handle. If you do uncover one, they're apt to be defensive but are not aggressive, so you should be able to just step away.
@@RattlesnakeSolutions Thank you so much for your help. I think then I will first do a double or triple wrap of chicken wire all around the tires, set into a trough in the ground, then put the 1/4 inch mesh cut in half to 12 inches wrapped externally around the chicken wire. that should do it. And always using tools is great thinking, that I hadn't thought of before. Again, thank you very much.
@@RattlesnakeSolutions No, I'm in Luna-Tic County, SW NM. After 10 years of PHX-Scotts, AZ, I decided that NM's very rural living is much mellower and more affordable for living in retirement. So far, so good. pjp88029
This is just for rattlesnakes :) I assume a similar situation may work in West Africa, with some adjustments for the species there. Some that are excellent climbers may still have an easy time getting in, unfortunately.
Were a person not bothered by the appearance, it seems to me that corrugated sheet metal would provide a more effective barrier to snake infiltration than the 1/4" mesh.
"Even the babies are one of the most dangerous animals in the world so I built this cage to keep them secure so there's no possible-oh my god" -that one guy from that one show
I am glad to hear that as you are performing your service you are also helping the snake. Most if not all snakes try to get away from a large predator, which is what humans look like and for the most part are. About half of the stories I here about the horrible rattlesnake and how the dog saved me, if you can get details the snake is usually trying to leave and must defend itself against the dog, who is just following its own instincts. I applaud the idea of prevention as the solution, I wish there was an good solution for Florida homes, I have lost count of the number of people I have meet who see every water snake as a copperhead or cotton mouth and just kill it. The eastern diamond back population has been decimated, so people rarely come across it anymore. It is so sad, people should take responsibility for actions and not be so quick to kill things.
They don't chase people although they are known to stand their ground if threatened. Just gotta exercise extra caution in areas where they are present.
We put it up in a way that they will not and cannot climb over. Rattlesnakes can't climb straight up a smooth surface to a height greater than their body length, almost always giving up around 1/3-1/2 of the length.
Will replace all 1/2 inch with 1/4 inch. FOUR ACRES to replace. I will add the 1/4 inch on top of 1/2 inch. GEEEZE it is always something. Thanks for the video. In Texas
In all seriousness, firing a weapon in an area where people are residing STILL has laws in the U.S.A. It is an arrest-able offense. Clearly james ellis is in the dark about the facts. Moving on... How far up your fence (and below ground) is needed to keep rattlesnakes ans bull snakes out of a 1/3rd acre in the south eastern region of Colorado? I rescue and rehab dogs in this area.
Patrick Szabo - Snake meat is tasty too! Few times they got in My coops caught them eating eggs and thats with 1/4 mesh buried AND up 3 ft on Chicken wire. If they want in they can usualy find a way!
while this is cool for small areas, fencing in 160 acres for the purpose of snake proofing is unfeasible. that's why I rely on my Winchester 1897. hasn't let me down. But cool stuff, had no idea this was a thing
Stop worrying about deadly snakes. That's the easiest cheapest thing in the world. How does that sound? As for machos, I have no advice, sorry. Just keep shooting and don't be shy to tell others, the whole world in fact, how clever you are.
Nope! That's why we know it works. Here's an article about how all that works: rattlesnakesolutions.com/snakeblog/keep-snakes-away/how-high-does-a-snake-fence-need-to-be/#:~:text=36%E2%80%B3%20is%20the%20correct%20height,%2C%20recommended%20height%20of%2036%E2%80%9D.
I thought the mesh was a lot bigger and whenever you showed your hands you were just far back but when you did the pen test I saw how small it actually is.
He is correct... But. The 1/4" mesh does not require but a height of 20." Next, no matter how tight the mesh if it can be tunneled under by snakes or other animals then snakes can use the tunnels also. This requires an *exterior lip* under ground so the un-wanted animals cannot make tunnels at the edge of the fence.
Terry Weaver Using the proper size mesh is one of many aspects to proper rattlesnake fencing. However, 20” is not sufficient to keep larger rattlesnakes out.
Rattlesnake Solutions LLC --- Yes you are correct. My point was doing the first 20." And the rest of the fence can be 1/2" mesh. My fault for not following through with that.
They don't dig their own holes, and we also dig the mesh into the ground to prevent anything going under. The depth that we bury it depends on the rodents in the area and the quality of the soil. Many rodents and softer soil = deeper fencing, etc.
Thank god i live in Norway where we have only one venemous snake and it's not even that dangerous (viper). But i like this idea but why don't people just use glass instead that's impossible to get through and you also have your view, the reason I ask is purely curiosity i mean i'm pretty sure someone else have thought about it aswell but it's probably incredibly expensive. Let me know like i said i'm just asking out of curiosity :)
I don''t know why i even watched this video xD In my country we only have 1 poisonous species of snakes called ''Common European Viper'', we have lot of forest all around our homes and cities, but i have only encountered 1 viper in my whole life time and it was dead one. I'm just glad i live in a such safe country.
Rattlesnake Solutions LLC, Yes! Seen anything from 14” to 36”. Just saw a video of a Black Tail climbing a dead tree to about a 36” branch where it curled up like home - not the same, but shows angles could allow entry (and now trapped) over a tall fence.

Me in real life: *thinking about all the ways that snake minding its own business can kill me*
Rattlesnakes and reptiles are truly beautiful and stunning creatures, but thank you for protecting homes and families from these misunderstood creatures and risky situations with families that do not know how to work with these animals
Fuck, now I don't feel safe inside my bedroom, I feel like a random snake is gonna fuckin crawl up on me
On a regular basis I see rabbits go through chain link fence like it wasn't there. I actually saw one go through a chain link fence with a carrot crosswise in its mouth....an amazing thing to watch! When In doubt get the smaller mesh size just to be sure.
When you put the pen through the mesh it totally threw off the perspective i had. I thought those bundles were much larger lol.
No rattlesnakes where I live in the Northwest, but I found this totally fascinating
When I see clips like this -

or this spectacular one of a rat snake using a few random nails -

I wonder exactly what I have to do to try and keep the snakes out.
What if a Sasquatch throws a snake into your yard ?
You're in a pickle then.
Nice promo video, guys. I don't need to worry where I live, but I like this ad.
So, do the baby rattle snakes cause much trouble? Do the bite?
Great video. But what about height of 1/4"?
Can you recommend a company that will build a 36" + wall around my home? Afterwards I would like to hire you to cover the drainage holes with the ¼" mesh you describe in the video. Thank you!
Are you in AZ? I'll ask my crew if we know anyone good.
@@RattlesnakeSolutions Yes- New River area, thank you!
@@kdiverdown I have heard good things about Ezequis Orozco 4802386577
that baby rattlesnake was so cute! I'd love to break into the snake relocation business down here in southern californa but I'm not really sure where to start. Do you need to pass a venomous handlers course or anything like that in AZ?
it was a baby Sidewinder
Perhaps, look one up and cold call. It may take a few businesses before you get a receptive response, but it will most probably happen. Being that you are in Southern California, you might also have the option of snake wranglers for films as a way to attain proper snake handling training.
I love snakes and move all my non venomous ones to safe places on my land or even under my hous. My dogs and chickens are not wise enough to leave them be so it's just to keep them safe. I love watching my water snakes, but draw the line on rattle snakes.
Question
Moving a snake, can it spread parasites or stickiness? Is it hateful to the snake?
As a German, my best protection from rattlesnakes is living in Germany. Rattlesnakes are quite rare in Germany, but we have bunnies that look very mean sometimes.
May I suggest the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch?
"It's not an ordinary rabbit! It's got a mean streak a mile wide!!"😂
bunnies can be dangerous. they will steal your carrots. beware of any rabbit named Bugs. He killed my friend Elmer and my friend Sam.
how tall and how deep should the 1/4 inch mesh go?
Only issue I have with the 1/4" mesh is a baby pigmie rattlesnake can and will fit through the 1/4" mesh
This is a service that we provide in Arizona, so Eastern species like a pygmy may have different tolerances.
What company do you recommend for 1/4 mesh?
maybe your still on here I live in philippines I have a 6ft perimeter wall around property but how do you keep snakes out of you have a gate on a drive way or a pedestrian gate
@@klee88029 Good luck! Are you in Arizona?
@@RattlesnakeSolutions No, I'm in Luna-Tic County, SW NM. After 10 years of PHX-Scotts, AZ, I decided that NM's very rural living is much mellower and more affordable for living in retirement. So far, so good. pjp88029
Is this just for rattlesnakes? Is there a fence for all types of snakes, in tropical regions (West Africa)?
This is just for rattlesnakes :) I assume a similar situation may work in West Africa, with some adjustments for the species there. Some that are excellent climbers may still have an easy time getting in, unfortunately.
Bruh I thought the Thumbnail was the PUBG map storm coming lol I’m high.
u need help
looking back at that I see it lol
This was a great video. Thank you captain.
Thanks for the information stranger, very informative
I like how they used a pen as a size check just in case some bright guy can't still figure out which size he has. >.
Thank you for that information!!!
Very useful!!!
Lmao that’s the final circle in the thumbnail
Wouldn't overlapping the half inch do the same thing?
Were a person not bothered by the appearance, it seems to me that corrugated sheet metal would provide a more effective barrier to snake infiltration than the 1/4" mesh.
"Even the babies are one of the most dangerous animals in the world so I built this cage to keep them secure so there's no possible-oh my god"
-that one guy from that one show
Do you think that 1/4 inch will work in the border?
Can they crawl over the fence, even if very high?
We put it up in a way that they will not and cannot climb over. Rattlesnakes can't climb straight up a smooth surface to a height greater than their body length, almost always giving up around 1/3-1/2 of the length.
Will replace all 1/2 inch with 1/4 inch. FOUR ACRES to replace. I will add the 1/4 inch on top of 1/2 inch. GEEEZE it is always something. Thanks for the video. In Texas
One of my favorite shows when I was a kid .
The 12 ga. shotgun does not stop them from coming in. It stops them from leaving!
AFTER they have bitten you when you walk out in your sandals and shorts. I prefer not giving a snake an opportunity to bite me thank you.
pussy
BeeN BRAZY hides behind a gun instead of just removing the snake from his yard :/
I would want my gate electrified if I lived near those things
I’m so glad you’re gentle with them 😭 thank you
I don't live in Arizona. Why is it recommended to me?
What size mesh to keep teenagers out?
What fence do i need for andacondas that terrifying me everyday?
You need to hire Ice Cube to stand in your lawn.
Rattlesnake Solutions LLC - that smart, anaconda vs anaconda lol
lmao
Or Jon Vaught
Won't be cheap but you'll actually need to build a wall. Just make the anacondas pay for it.
CCI snake shot works great in most larger caliber revolvers.......
that's right Murica a gun is always the solution over common sense,do not piss in your pants over your fright
Shooting at things in your backyard doesn't prevent anything.
Rattlesnake Solutions LLC no but, it sure scares the hell out of the neighbors. :)
Very nice video thanks for the information
while this is cool for small areas, fencing in 160 acres for the purpose of snake proofing is unfeasible. that's why I rely on my Winchester 1897. hasn't let me down.
Veeery interesting. Umm..how do you stop them from going under it?
We dig it into the ground at least 6".
The snakes can’t slither up and over the wire?
I own beautiful horse property in NE Scottsdale but don't visit much cuz of the snakes:(
I'm scared of worms so I probably need 1/8 inch!
Smaller!!! Some worms are thin as hairs!!
1/2048 inch.
leroy jenkins a full wall
D'artanyan the Meow-sketeer, We are never safe from worms! They can initiate a coordinated attack UNDER solid walls! We’re doomed.
Just what I needed to know, thanks guys.
Can they clime the mesh?
1/4"
That makes more sense, thanks for clarifying!
Rattlesnake Solutions LLC could the snakes not tunnel underneath
They don't dig their own holes, and we also dig the mesh into the ground to prevent anything going under. The depth that we bury it depends on the rodents in the area and the quality of the soil. Many rodents and softer soil = deeper fencing, etc.
So... can I use one of these to keep a pet rattlesnake?
Also stops grizzly bears from sneaking in through the mesh.
Helpful information, thank you for sharing !!
So construction cloth?
Thank god i live in Norway where we have only one venemous snake and it's not even that dangerous (viper). But i like this idea but why don't people just use glass instead that's impossible to get through and you also have your view, the reason I ask is purely curiosity i mean i'm pretty sure someone else have thought about it aswell but it's probably incredibly expensive. Let me know like i said i'm just asking out of curiosity :)
Hey That's very helpful especially because I live in MINNESOTA
You're the one that clicked on it.
Ya it seamed interesting none the less

I don''t know why i even watched this video xD In my country we only have 1 poisonous species of snakes called ''Common European Viper'', we have lot of forest all around our homes and cities, but i have only encountered 1 viper in my whole life time and it was dead one. I'm just glad i live in a such safe country.
Can the snakes climb the fence?
Rattlesnake fence hole size is STILL great information! Thanks!
We're working on another one about how high they can climb :)
Rattlesnake Solutions LLC, Yes! Seen anything from 14” to 36”. Just saw a video of a Black Tail climbing a dead tree to about a 36” branch where it curled up like home - not the same, but shows angles could allow entry (and now trapped) over a tall fence.
What about here in Louisiana...do y’all have a alligator fence
We’ve had a alligator in our ditch once after heavy rains
what about 2(+) layers of 1/2 mesh that are offset, so the total ppi is smaller than 1/2in.
