Thanks for giving reasonable advice that actually works. I really hate people moving here to AZ and killing snakes. They want nothing to do with you and wont hang around unless you provide a desirable environment for them. 70% of venomous snake bites occur when someone tries to mess with the snake and more people die from vending machines falling on them than snake bites in the US.

I agree, too many people freak out about rattlesnakes when theyve only seen one or two out of several years they lived there. They have no idea how important snakes, especially rattlesnakes, are to keeping rodents and pests at bay. There's so many alternative and more effective ways of keeping rattlesnakes off properties without killing them or harming them.

Noticed rattlesnake sheddings a lil under a two weeks ago... Today, I heard it close but couldn't find it. Having three dogs sorta terrifies me of them getting bit considering it can be deadly... Although, I went out with boots, gloves, and a shovel for attack mode...nothing! I typed in "how to protect yourself from rattlesnakes" and third recommendation down - John to the rescue!!! Thanks for this sound advice!!!
You know? I've grown to like them. They rattle to let you know they're there. For the most part they'll just keep on going if you leave them be. Worst case you protect yourself with a karate chop to the head. 🔫 pew
There are a couple businesses (depending where you are) that you can take your dogs to train to avoid rattlesnakes and also alert you. Fortunately, a lot of dogs are also more resilient to rattlesnake venom.

I bought a few acres in Deming, New Mexico. I won't be off grid because there's a power pole on the corner of my lot. But I'm still going to try and build a small home that is sustainable. One of my neighbors is a geodesic dome which looked interesting from the photos I saw. I bought land I've never been to lol. I'd like to build a small adobe house which would be kinda traditional. Plus it seems like they are easier to heat and cool. And I'm surrounded by dirt so why not?

Sensible and humane suggestions! Thanks for not suggesting to just kill them. I am outside of Tucson in the desert. Just saw one snake last summer and it was not a venomous one.

Good tips, all of them are accurate and work. I find a garden hoe works best for dispatching a snake that is either aggressive or won't go away.

That's ok, part of homesteading I guess.
Cats are one of the best deterrents against snakes. Only feed the cat enough to keep it around. A cat that's a little hungry will do a better job of keeping the homestead free of vermin. If kitty doesn't work then a 20 gauge will solve the problem. Take care John. Love the show. Vaughn

@@FrugalOffGrid I had a cat that I inherited when my parents moved to Colorado in 1979. The cat was left by my parents. I didn't see the cat for about a month. All of a sudden I hear the cat announce its presence. I was working in the garden and looked at the cat and she had a fat mouse in her mouth. Later that spring I was working on my car. I looked towards the hiway and see the cat wrestling with something. It was a spread head snake. I believe the real name for the snake is hognose snake. I walked to the cat and watched her bite the snakes 🐍 head off and then eat the snake. I observed her do this 2 or 3 other times. Best cat I ever had. Take care. Vaughn

My Cats do an excellent job of keeping the Rodent population down on my property and I feel a lot safer. No rodents for a food source and then no snakes is my understanding and it works.
Rattlesnakes are territorial. If they like your territory? They stay. Mohave Greens are aggressive, and the only time I tried the water hose? It came at me, the water and the hose. I have found my .22 a more effective tool against predators that could "accidentally" kill me.
I've had 3 on my property that just kept on going by. I've had one square up with my dog also. It's a personal decision you have to make sometimes.
I live in the habitat of the Mohave Rattlesnakes. They like flat ground with creosote bush, that’s my yard in a nut shell for 20 plus years. They are not always green and they are no more or less “aggressive” than any other rattlesnake. They have never chased me, not once, they usually are dangerous if they happen to be in “ambush mode” and YOU are not watching where you’re stepping. That’s about it. From the looks of this guy’s place I doubt he has mojave rattlesnakes there anyways, perhaps a blacktail or two maybe. He’s correct, a snake, (rattlesnake or not), is LESS likely to stick around if they are denied water, shelter and food. I would add that chicken wire will not keep them out, a wire fencing 3’ ft high and if you can stick a pencil through the wire, a snake can get in.
Rattlesnakes (crotalids) are only territorial to other males of their species, even then when they combat it's mostly during mating season. They are an animal with a warning mechanism to protect them from being injured or to ward off potential predators. If they come towards you, they aren't chasing you, 9/10 they are retreating to the pathway they came from which is behind you, or they are disoriented and trying to get away. There's only a few snakes that truly chase people and they don't live on this continent. Rodent infestations from absence of their biggest predators are more dangerous to you. There are more hospitalizations and deaths from snake related incidents when the person is trying to kill them (especially using a gun is a bad idea to shoot at the ground) than there are from people being bitten. Also, 90% of bites come from when people are attempting to harass, harm, or kill the animal. It's really important to understand their importance in ecosystems and that they are a vital part of God's creation. Also, there's a reason the rattlesnake was chosen for the Gadsden flag.

In Africa people often keep geese around gardens and homesteads to keep snakes away.

Search scents they dont like. Garlic, lavendar, some oils burn like peppermint. Marigolds ect. Any gardener knows the flowers that attract bees...some repel snakes.
I have a pond and a massive crater in the ground on my 15 acres I can't fit down the hole but its deep and it's filled with rattle snakes I want to blow it up cause I have alot of animals but I depend on hawks and eagles to much to kill and eat them I live in a area with bears mountain lions coyotes bobcats and all kinds of other animals but in the winter snow it's different
Great video, learned alot watching this. I had a rattlesnake fall into my crawl space last September. The fire department came out and said to leave it cause they couldn't reach it. What Indid was put a medium size log which was over 4 feet long and set it for the snake to slither out. The fire department said it would come out when it get hungry, sure hope it did. The reason we had a snake was my neighbors wood pile , it came into my property due to the high winds pulling the fence from the post. Who do I call if you know to check under my home. My property is clean all arond my home. The new neighbors got rid of the wood plies. I just need to make sure the snake is gone. My husband is deaf and wouldn't be able to hear if it is still here.
I live it Western Arizona and have a man made wash behind my home off my easement. Plus BLM land behind me also. Made rattlesnakes out there.
Best thing to do is call a local Herpetological Society (or Association) and they have people who will come out there. The hard part is, you could check one day and then the next day another arrives. It's just apart of living in Arizona. Best way to stop them from getting into those areas is finding a way to seal them off or properly fence with 1/4 inch mesh that's about 4-5ft tall. Rattlesnakes are especially good at keeping down rodent populations that may carry Hantavirus and other diseases and infestations.

You mentioned you have an electric fence. Why? It looks like you have you animals in pens. To keep cows out? Is it easier than using barbed wire fencing?
Yep very true. Attack it at the source. Like in part attacking aphids by going after the ants that farm them. Great tips and advice. Rattlers are not to want around for sure. Cats are great, but ever consider a donkey?

Snakes don't like low frequency Vibrations. Elephants eat alot. Their Turds are massive. IDK😅
Here's a big tip from one of the largest snake events on the east coast in Potter County Pa, don't kill or run off Black Rat Snakes because they have a big appetite and eat lots of rodents so the Rattlesnakes won't stick around because there is no food supply.
What if you live in a place with some rattlesnakes, but you have a pool too?
I have a pond about the size of a pool. Can't say I've had any issues yet.
What about bobcats cougars and other predators?
I've seen a baby black bear and bobcat tracks but I haven't had any issues. The same thing applies, keeping a clean busy homestead will help keep them away. The electric fence should help as well. I don't think they're very fond of all the activity on the homestead as I've never even caught one on camera.

Why not acquire several cats? Geese and guinea hens and turkeys all of these are snake deterrents.
I think you're a smart awesome man. But what's up with all the rattle snake lovers around here? If I had a homestead, which I never will..but if I did and I saw a snake I'd kill it!!! Either my dogs or me would have snake for dinner.

Ignorance leads to fear and fear over rules logic. Rattlesnakes are important to the environment. In some ecosystems, rattlesnakes are very important for germination of certain plant seeds or the dispersion of them via Zoochory and Endozoochory. Most people would rather not understand and value God's creations. They are here on this earth for a reason and killing them is only shooting the lights and cursing the dark.
use 1/4" chicken wire not 1/2" as shown on this video. baby snakes can get in through 1/2 " wire.

I've only seen 1 scorpion. Rarely any spiders and I've seen a few tarantulas but they're harmless.
Take a black light outside at night and you'll see how many there are. They glow

Scattered moth balls in area's where snakes can hide will help a lot. Snake's have super sensitive nostrils and hate moth balls.

Snakes are an extremely vital part of our eco systems. Ignorance/lack of education causes fear and fear over rules logic. I'm sad to see how many grown adults are afraid of a small thing like a snake. People like that are very very fragile. They are apart of God's creation and should be respected as such.
