You are an excellent instructor and storyteller! My first boyfriend, Joe Branham, did this back in the 70's. He became the head of the herpitarium (sp?) at the Oklahoma City zoo. It takes a real man to do this!
Man, being in the woods and hearing those rattles and not being able to see the snake or tell where the rattling is coming from is probably the scariest experience I've ever had in the woods. Sometimes in thick brush they rattle so loud you think you're surrounded.
@Koletti Pireaus That's my point., you can't move away from it if you can't tell where it's coming from. You just have to stand still until the snake decides to move on. I've had this happen on more than a few occasions and it's scary as hell. Anyone who has experienced it will know exactly what I'm talking about. Me and a friend of mine were walking through some thick brush once and had one go off and neither of us could tell where the rattling was coming from because it was so loud it sounded like we were surrounded.
Yeah, I was in Illinois near a known snake refuge (an old abandoned house), and they had these water pumps between the cabins. I was walking between the cabins and one of those pumps went off, sounded like a rattlesnake, at least to me. Man, I was looking at every leaf and twig trying to figure that out.
I was afraid of scorpions and the dark. Then, I went out on a scorpion hunt in the middle of the night, and in the middle of the desert. I got addicted to the night and I love scorpions, now. And, it all started when I took a very close look at an Arizona Giant Hairy Scorpion.

That snake is a lot "more calmer" than any of the timber rattlers I've dealt with here in TN. Grab one of them by the tail and it goes berserk like a rubber band coming unwound. I had two brother-laws, one who had grown up in town, and the other had grown up on the St. Francois River in South Missouri. The one from town was scared of snakes. He went fishing one night in a boat with the one who had grown up on the river. Later he told us " I looked behind us and here was 50 snakes staring at me!" " I told Larry we needed to get out of there and all he did was say " If you'd quit shining that light around you would not even know they were there." I don't think they caught any fish that night. Too much noise was being made. The snakes always seemed to avoid my BIL striking at them with an oar. BIL#2 kept telling him to ignore them but he would not listen.
For any future trappers out there. Once I started my little trapping business, I went to the paint store and bought a few empty five gallon paint buckets, and drilled them full of holes. Place a few inches of sand or stones in the bottom for ballast, and no helper needed. The lids stay solidly in place as well for transporting. 🤩

I'm not much of a snake guy. but that's a big beautiful rattlesnake. I just seen one just the other day on my way home from a day out of the water. My brother wanted me to run it over, but I stuck to my guns and said no to him. I got out of my truck and gently clapped my hand and it slowly moved of the dirt road and back into the weeds. Note it wasn't as big as this one like it just 3 to 4 small rattles.
Great video. Rattlers aren't really aggressive if a person doesn't mess with them. I've always heard you could walk within 5 feet of a record size, and never know it because it wont make itself known if it doesn't feel threatened (old wives tale?). If you're out in nature you don't need to kill them, but they taste great if you do. I've not checked into it, but I heard pygmies are protected in many states. Timber rattlers are protected everywhere. Great chaps. In a pinch, you can use several layers of denim. I knew a guy that used old stove pipe for chaps - lol. Just respect the snake, even if it's dinner. You'll be less likely to get bit.
I will never ever do this but I took many notes of what to do😂 On a side note, it is nice to see that you treat the snake as an intelligent animal. That shows that you care about them,
This guy is just flat out likeable. The world needs more videos with him.

Richard McMillan you Saw That Too?

Do rattlesnakes lik to be petted
No
+Terrance Mooselips Yes, they love to cuddle, too. You can train them to sit up and beg. Cobras are good at that.
Yes they do. That way they can strike you with a venom that can cost you life or limb.
Of course. Especially Black Mambas and Inland Taipans.
Common knowledge dude.
Terrance Mooselips idk you should try it sometime. Come back and tell me how it all worked out for you.
Love this guy. You can learn easily with him. He is the point, easy to understand.
And away we go...To the truck
i'd be screaming my lungs out being anywhere near that creature
I will never ever do this but I took many notes of what to do😂 On a side note, it is nice to see that you treat the snake as an intelligent animal. That shows that you care about them,
