  • Today we review The Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 in RLX titanium with an intense black dial and an Oyster bracelet. It's a thing of beauty.
The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional rotatable 60-minute graduated bezel is made entirely from precious metals or fitted with a Cerachrom insert in high-tech ceramic. The raised polished numerals and graduations stand out clearly against a matte, sand-blasted background.
RLX titanium is a grade 5 titanium alloy specially selected by Rolex. Like all titanium alloys, it is especially lightweight and is noted for its mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.
Another characteristic of RLX titanium is the possibility of working it to give a polished or satin finish according to the brand’s specifications. Its high mechanical strength makes it complex to work with, and the decision to use it has required the introduction of special production processes.
We wish it had a glide lock but its pretty close to being the perfect everyday watch! Let us know what you think in the comments!

when used as an actual sports watch, the absence of weight makes it 100x more comfy. mine literally disappears on the wrist and I always forget its there. with my subs, i always have to take them off. with this one, i havent had to take it off yet! probably gonna look beat to shit in a few years, but hey, thats what theyre for!

Hey - how have you found the wear and tear? I've been offererd one literally this morning and they want my sub as a trade. No biggie but I can beat my sub to shit and it's still ok to look at. How is the titanium holding up?

    • @youtubename3838

@@wally07 Its great so far! I’m a serial watch abuser lol. I skate, surf, cliffdive, spearfish, rock climb, get into fights etc. Happy to say thag the polished chamfers havent gotten any scratches. I dont have any deep scratches so far (surprising) so im thinking it might have a higher hardness than the reg Rolex steel. However, since the brushing is very coarse, and the colour is darker, you WILL notice scratches that run perpendicular to the grain more. I plan on brushing one of those out with a very light brass brush as an experiment, but im hesitant.
CONS: It feels weird against the skin at first because its not as cold? idk how to explain it but it feels like someone just took it off even though no one was wearing it. The lightness turns A LOT of people off. Definitely try it on and move around a lot before deciding. Its also bigger. My wrists are chunky from playing sports, but it would look stupid if it overhangs. Mist people dont notice its a Rolex at first. This is a plus for me, but a lot of people wana be noticed when they pay so much. I feel like this bezel design could chip easier because of the raised numerals. somehow hasnt happened, but ive been mentally prepared for it since i first got my hands on it.
Love this thing, I really do. But depending on the Sub, if it was my only watch, i might stick with that. its funky forsure but its one of those “love it or hate it” type watches.
Let me know what u end up doing!

If there's any hype around this watch, I do get it, being Rolex's first ever titanium watch. Personally, I prefer Omega's old titanium Seamaster's, actually even their newer ones. But yeah Rolex's first ever Ti watch is always gonna be a valuable collectible.

For those of you non watch snobs out there that love this watch but know they will never be able to obtain one, there is a watch brand called San Martin that makes an homage of a Rolex Sea Dweller 116600 in grade 5 Titanium. It has a sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, glide lock clasp, a choice of different movements. It may be as close as you will ever come to a Titanium Rolex.

It's completely brushed because Rolex doesn't have the expertise to polish titanium; but FWIW, neither does Omega. Only Grand Seiko does at that price point. As for why it doesn't have glidelock, part of that is because the YM references aren't considered dive watches, but a more practical reason is that glidelock has a tendency of scratching links, and that's with oystersteel; imagine how bad it would be with grade 2 titanium. Omega got around this by making the part that moves within the clasp a solid piece with no flex.

One more thing: Rolex isn't manufacturing the titanium Yacht-Master in any kind of reasonable quantity. The AD's have received VERY few of them. It's essentially over-hyped vaporware.
