  • It might be tough not to feel patriotic after hearing why Fr. Mike Schmitz loves America in this video. More importantly, though, he talks about the “burden of freedom” and explains why true freedom requires wisdom, virtue, and a thorough understanding of the story of our nation and our world.

    I never thought about it quite the same way before. I completely agree that we've forgotten our history. We've lost our wisdom.

    Profound! I love how about virtue you say that it is knowing the right thing to do, when to do it and how to do it. You don't mention WHY :)
    I fall very often because I'm not convicted in my heart about something I ought to do. Simple obedience would be wise in such circumstances.
    Thank you Fr. Mike! Let us not pass up the opportunity to be free, to have the power to do what we ought.

    I love this country that I do study history not only USA but world history. For this reason my Dad came from Mexico to work in this country that they want us out. That could destroy their working class.

    Father you know I did never share with you who St. John of the Cross married in my family in 1979. My brother Pete didnt know her either for when she is. But Sylvija Sterns, whose father is Dr. Sternswho passed away and was a professor of History at Muhlenberg is St. Gregory the Greats mommy. and my brother Pete who St. John of the Cross wanted a priest in 9th grade already but MSGR Doyle claimed was too young to think about it eventually majored in Economics and Business at Moravian College met Sylvija who was studying Music,with a specialty in the Harpsichord,and French. As part of her studies she also studied at the sorbonne in France. Well anyway, her family was cArrie3d from one country to another during WW11 from Latvia, russia ND THEY Hve instead alot of relAtives weven in australia to where they landed too. So anyway, my brother would find out truth from her and she did not want to have chuildren so after all the money spent he asdked for An annulment and got one. He will never be the same FTER FINDING THAT OUT .

      Father Mike, this message seems like fairy tales fiction talk. Americans don't want freedom nor do many want wisdom & virtuous or ever were here in America. Maybe with individuals...but that's subjective if it's not measured by the Word of God.

    Unfortunately wisdom and politics don't go together.

    It was a good video, but I feel you should've mentioned the evils in our nation, like abortion, that restrict the freedoms of people such as the unborn.

    • @sttommore
      @sttommore 8 років тому

      In this case, that's outside the scope of the message. While the evils this nation have adopted widely (sorry for the use of the ironic term) are rather many, they mark those places wherein we are no longer virtuous enough to maintain our own freedom. It would appear that the United States, as we have known it, is very sadly in its twilight.

    • @sttommore

      However, we can only pray that such a transition could be peaceful. I think this election cycle teaches us that, even just amongst "conservatives," there is wild disagreement about what constitutes good policy.

    • @chris-solmon4017
      @chris-solmon4017 8 років тому

      +sttommore - no it does not fall outside of the bigger picture message.

    • @sttommore
      @sttommore 8 років тому

      +Sol Mon this message was not about the bigger picture. Not every message needs to be a stern reproach.

    I don't believe in democracy because for example most people on the world are not interested in politics, that is natural and normal. Moreover, who says majority have right? Monarchy is the most natural system for us. The idea of Kingdom came to as from God (that's why kings were anointed of God). PS. Sorry for my terrible english.

      That's why we are a representative republic, where the representatives are supposed to listen to the concerns, etc. of their constituents and then bring them to the central gov't for discussion and voting. As Jefferson said, "We are (meaning that's their aim) a nation of laws, not men." So that there is a process of virtuous discernment, rather than one or a few making decisions based on their retirement, etc.
      But Jesus does say that all things will turn to dust. Even though God was with the founders as they essentially gave away their hard earned power to future generations, Satan is ruler of this world, and sin brings decay. As much as I love our country, I come to the hard conclusion that it can't last forever, but I have hope in Christ as He also said. There will be another USA, by another name, perhaps; maybe this one can recover for a time, but will require us to truly die to our desires and be open to what Christ wants us to do.
      This is really hard, but if we don't truly put our hope and focus on Christ, we will try to do it ALL in our own strength, and will fail. You know what comes to mind? The section of Fellowship of the Rings when Frodo says to Gandalf that he wishes that he had been born in another time. Love Gandalf's answer. Probably because Tolkien was a wise Catholic and was good friends with C.S. Lewis, who could explain *anything*! :-)
      God's Peace go with you all!
