Aren't All Churches the Same?

  • There’s an ancient symbol that uses a ship or boat to represent the Catholic Church. In this video, Fr. Mike Schmitz takes that analogy a step further, using it to explain how everything Christians love about their church, whichever one it may be, originally came from the flagship or mothership of Christianity. She has had her struggles, some of which have caused others to leave and start their own fleet, but ultimately she has stayed her course and will always welcome her crew home.

      How do you reconcile the differences in the doctrine of salvation-in that some believe that it’s by Christ through grace that we are saved and sealed at the moment of conversion others believe it is a process, not having full assurance of what Christ did on the cross-paid the sin debt in full. Salvation then sanctification, or salvation and sanctification are one of the same.

      @@jld4870 we believe the work Christ did on the cross is complete. What we don't believe is once saved always saved, that is not biblical. What is biblical is salvation in baptism, then works of grace to continue our growth. And we of course will sin again, and will need to be reconciled to God again, by confessing our sins, and being renewed.

    This analogy is absolutely perfect. I remember wondering when I was younger why there were so many churches, and how we knew that we were "right" as Catholics. As I grew older I came to realize that we were the first church, so we were the closest to Jesus. All of the other denominations were created by humans who were unhappy with the actions of other humans within the Catholic Church. Humans are not perfect, and have made mistakes. But that doesn't mean that the Catholic Church was wrong, because our teachings come directly from the source, without change over the centuries. This analogy addresses all of those thoughts perfectly, and I will be sure to keep it in mind for the future. Thank you Fr. Mike, so glad I found your videos!

    I'm an evangelical Protestant with great respect for the Catholic Church. I've been fascinated with these videos for about the past three months as I've been considering jumping ship (back to the main ship?)
    Here are my issues with each:
    Protestant church -- I LOVE the emotion and enthusiasm. From corporate worship to the long talks after church lets out, to the smile on everyone's face and their support throughout the week, the excitement of being saved and getting to know our Savior better is there.
    My criticism is the lack of 'gravitas' if you will. Sometimes emotions overwhelm and the intellectual pursuit of Christ goes out the window.
    Catholic church -- Is just the opposite. I love the church history, looking thru the debates that over decades and centuries have helped form the Christian thought of today.
    However, for a church with a direct lineage to the Bible, I just don't see that excitement when I attend Catholic church. You'd figure with all the connections, someone would be excited!
    Now I have met some 'On-Fire' Catholics that are all about Christ, and love to discuss beliefs in wide-eyed wonderment. But those with the enthusiasm seem to be very few and far between. I am a social creature and love to talk about beliefs, but to find kindreds in a Catholic church has been a difficult task, at least.
    Any suggestion? I seriously want to get to know the Catholic church better, but I am so used to being around enthusiastic believers that I'm finding a bit of culture shock with most Catholics I've run in to. I do want to be part of an intellectual, historical church, but I don't want to lose the excitement of knowing I'm grinding my way to an eternal life.

      The Catholic Church isn’t “exciting” and “vibrant” and that’s by design. Church isn’t supposed to be a rock concert. It’s solemn, serious, and taken VERY seriously. There are plenty of passionate Catholics, but we don’t need to make a show of it via fake healings and speaking in tongues. I know too many Protestants who stay in those churches simply for community and the after church barbecues. But for Catholics, the faith comes from a 2000 year old mass that makes us one with God. Hope that helps, so that you may join the One True Apostolic Church.

    • @CharletteG
      @CharletteG 6 років тому +17

      Moses King speaking in tongues is biblical also if you have not witnessed healing which is also biblical I’m sorry for you but in my own personal life and family we have witnessed healing by prayer by ways that have not been able to be explained scientifically. God does not lie and the Bible is clear on the fruits of the spirit God. Reads on the book of Acts. If you do not believe to be true I respect that as well you should be respectful of those who do. I’ve been exposed to both sides and have felt the Holy Sprit work in amazing ways through both Catholic and Evangelicals... I feel that ppl are more indoctrinated in Catholic Churches and are all about works vs evangelicals practices is more focus on a direct worship and relationship with God while evangelizing to the lost and don’t focus on rituals and practices . I don’t think there is a perfect religion to follow there is fault in every church that’s why our Grace and salvation comes directly from God and not religion but many may argue. In most cases ppl can find scripture to manipulate and make their point on any subject so it’s left to mere interpretation. God is sovereign and amen to that. We should not make ourselves to be as different and we try we are more alike at the end of the day. God bless

      Mel Lecompte the holy mass is for you to reflect and hear God’s voice and His true body and blood are in the Eucharist. The music isn’t meant to be pop music and loud but more soothing; I am pretty sure Jesuschrist would not feel good with a loud band in front of him while he is dying and suffering with all the laughs from his enemies. You need to reflect why He died .. for your sins

They altered the Holy Bible in the book of exodus to allow for carved images. I could so much more. The organization wss and is corrupt and that's why people left it. I was a Catholic for many years but left it. I got saved! I am born again. I love Jesus. I am baptised in God's Holy Spirit. If you are Christ's them you are a King and Priest. Your wife is not the boss of you you can worship in any way you want. I am young and unmarried so perhaps I cannot give the best advice but if you really want to go just go. That's what I would do. Go to both churches, go to the Catholic Church and then go to her church as well, that way you can both be together in church. If your wife loves you she will allow it and will understand. That said, I think the struggle for many is finding the community to anchor you in a local church. Be that Protestant or Catholic. There's a cognitive dissonance between wanting to be a part of what's true to feeling welcomed into the arms of a loving family of God. It breaks my heart when people slip through the cracks because they're hurting, and the church doesn't see them. I want others to feel loved in God's house and by God's people.

      Leonardo's Truth : Do you agree that nothing less than your sin nailed Jesus Christ to the cross for the redemption of you soul? Do you agree that the sins of mankind were placed upon Jesus Christ, the sinless lamb of God, and that those sins and nothing but those sins nailed God to the cross? The "Jews" we're not the cause of our Lord's death. While the New Testament indicates that there were among the priestly class some who saw Jesus as a threat, they were by no means representing all Jews everywhere. When you think of the multitudes that followed Jesus it's abundantly clear that many, many Jews saw Jesus for who he was. In fact, it wasn't until the Bar Kokhba revolt, 132-136 CE that we begin to see the Gentile influence in what was clearly and almost completely a Jewish sect. Jesus was undoubtedly a Jew and his disciples were clearly Jews as well as all of the hierarchy of the nascent church.
      So if you believe that Jesus Christ the incarnation of Almighty God was crucified, died and rose from the dead to redeem you for your sins, then you could easily join the Catholic Church in good standing. Lest we forget, if you had been the only person on earth Jesus would've considered you important enough to be redeemed. Even though, being the only person on earth would mean that you alone were the cause for his sacrifice.

    • @AveChristusRex

      +Pam Learnart "if you believe that Jesus Christ the incarnation of Almighty God was
      crucified, died and rose from the dead to redeem you for your sins, then
      you could easily join the Catholic Church in good standing"
      How about every dogma of the Faith? There is no 'bare Christianity.' That's a Protestant heresy.
      "Unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sin." This is the dogma of Faith from Our Lord Himself.
      That same Lord who wasn't afraid to call the Christ-rejecting Jews "the synagogue of Satan," "who say they are Jews, but lie," who are not of God but "of [their] father, the devil."
      St. Peter says the Jews crucified Jesus: "Jesus, whom you crucified."
      "Crucify him" was the cry, as they saw the bloodied, hardly recognizable Christ barely able to stand. "Let his blood be upon us, and upon our children!"
      These weren't nice people. They recjected the Way, the Truth and the Life. They were under the curse of God; His blood was upon them in the opposite sense to us.
      The heresy that todays Jews actually follow the Jewish religion from before Christ, or that they are not under a) the curse of their forefathers, or b) original sin plain and simple, then you are a heretic.
      The Jews alone did not bring the need for the Passion and death of Christ. Our Redemption. But they were involved in the plot in a not-so-good way, let's say. That is, they actually really wanted to crucify Him because they "were deceived: for their own malice blinded them. And they knew not the secrets of God, nor hoped for the wages of justice, nor esteemed the honour of holy souls."

      Your sins and the sins of all mankind nailed Jesus to the cross. There were some Jews who didn't like him, and there were those who wanted him out of the way. But to paint Judaism with such a broad brush is simply incorrect. Jesus lived, died and arose from the dead a Jew. He never rejected his faith nor did he advocate any other Jews to reject their faith. In fact, he was prepared for burial in the manner of any other faithful Jew, because he was a faithful Jew.
      I know people like to blame the Jews for everything that they don't like within themselves, but God is merciful and kind, he provides forgives for that kind of thing... if he's asked to do so.

    This is a good explanation about the full truth and the partial truth that comes from it.
    By the way, it becomes more complicated when it comes to literally talk about the birth of protestant churches ("secularly"), because they don't mean to "build another ship", but they just believe to remain in the original one, while pointing that the catholic "ship" had deviated from the original ship, so just trying to stay in (or restore) the original ship.

    Love your videos. I am apprehensive about all churches given what's said in the book of Revelation. At the moment I like to read the Bible & listen to the views of quite a few churches & priests and ask for guidance in prayer to our Heavenly Father. I have been baptized into the Orthodox Church, having had so many wonderful & sensitive experiences with the Church in Eastern Europe. The Orthodox Church was part of the Holy Christian Church until the schism/break between it and the Catholic Church in the 12th century, I believe ... so it has a long history since the times of Peter. I wish I had more trust & faith in all Christian Churches ...

    There's more to add to the story......
    The people on the small boats latter thought that we don't need any ship to cross the ocean and jumped into the ocean and started body surfing....... these are people who say we don't need any church to be saved...... and call them non-denominational

    • @jesusislord9755
      @jesusislord9755 7 років тому +9

      Shahroze Sarfraz Well the truth is we don't need a church building or a denomination to be saved. Salvation comes from Jesus Christ and him alone. BTW in the bible, when Jesus said that he will build his church on a hill. He was referring to everyone in the body of Christ as the church. Not a building or a denomination. Denominations and religion is man made. Do you think Adam and Eve had a specific denomination or religion? I doubt it. That's because it's more about having a relationship with Jesus Christ and only following Gods word. A Christian does not need to go to a church building to worship if they don't want to. They can actually get together with a group of Christians at someone's house and worship the lord every sabbath. That would also be considered obeying the sabbath because the church is the people not the building or a denomination.

      Jesus Is Lord seriously???
      if one doesn't need a denomination why are there thousands of denominations?

    • @jesusislord9755
      @jesusislord9755 7 років тому +2

      Shahroze Sarfraz Denominations do not matter. Jesus did not create the Catholic Church. Denominations are man made. God doesn't care about denomination, he cares about people having a relationship with him and souls being saved. When Jesus said that he will build his church in the New Testament, he was referring to everyone in the body of Christ, meaning everyone who was saved in general. Think about it this way, all worships is good worship right? So why would God care if someone is baptist vs. if someone is Catholic? Also there are non denominational churches btw. There is also messianic Judaism. Regardless of whether you are Protestant or Catholic, as long as you are saved, we will all go to heaven and be with God. That's what truly matters, not what denomination someone is. There are thousands of different denominations because I guess humans wanted a different church experience. For example, going to a Presbyterian church is a different experience than going to a Pentecostal church. I heard that Presbyterian churches are known for being more calm and quiet whereas Pentecostal churches are known for being more vocally expressive with their praise/worship and a lot of people like to speak in tongues during their worship. But regardless all worship and praise is good worship and praise.

    • @EuRevTV
      @EuRevTV 7 років тому +2

      Jesus Is Lord why do you think Jesus did not establish what we now call the Catholic Church?
      I agree with you that all worship of God can be good, but worship isn't all that encompasses belonging to a church. Different denominations also believe different things about God, who He is and what He wants for us. For some who want to understand God, it's more than just "do I enjoy this?", it's about who do I believe God is and why?

    • @jesusislord9755
      @jesusislord9755 7 років тому +2

      +EuRevTv I get what you are saying. But sometimes different churches in the same denomination can believe different things. Just like individuals within a denomination can all have different beliefs.

      Jane Dough this is an example of classic Protestant misuse of Scripture. What about when Jesus himself calls Abraham Father Abraham? Was Jesus confused? I don't think so. He was referring to God the Father. Do not equate anybody on earth with God the Father.

      Daniel that's actually not true, the fact that the Orthodox Churches have caved in to contraceptives, means that they've gone through a very radical change, that they cannot square with Dogma that comes directly from the apostles. the Catholic church has never changed Dogma, once defined, the Orthodox Churches have. When you have Bishops that contradict each other, that's a good indication, that the Orthodox way doesn't work. I think you should know, that there are Byzantine Rite Catholics, if it's the Liturgy that interests you. I'm actually surprised, there's not as much disability, in eastern Orthodoxy, as there is in Protestantism, keep in mind, that the Orthodox Church just recently had its own schism.

    The question is, where was that amazing titanic going? The purpose of building the other little ships was to go get away from the destination they were headed to. I do not think it was just the staff and onboard entertainment that bothered them. Maybe they realized they were headed straight for a huge iceburg and decided to get off before it crashed.
    Stay on your little ships people! Keep rowing and look for the real captain. History will repeat it self and the Titanic did not make it.

      +Katherine Abando Fr. Mike speaks of this in another video. He makes the point that two people of different faiths who marry are committing to someone that they think is fundamentally wrong about the most important thing ever: eternal life. The Church doesn't require conversion, but the ceremony must be Sacramentally performed by a priest or the one who's Catholic commits mortal sin, and they have to agree to rear the children as Catholic. Also, they won't be able to marry in a Matrimonial Mass celebrated in the church itself, it has to be outside the nave (which, appropriately, comes from the Latin word for "ship" and is where the parishioners congregate for worship). Mixed marriages are celebrated in the narthex, which is the entryway to the nave -- we've come to think of it as a "foyer."

    You're hanging a huge amount on Jesus' conversation with Peter and the 'Keys' comment as well as using an analogy that it tidy and uncomplicated. I'm not sure it was like that, the church didn't begin to acquiesce to Rome until the 3rd century and you can't describe the body of Christ as a 'Ship' it's just not like that. I'm writing this on Pentecost Sunday...it's the Holy Spirit that makes us one...just as Jesus predicted.

      2 Timothy 3:15 reads "able to make you wise for salvation through Christ Jesus". If the scriptures are God-breathed (2 Tim 3:16 - which means they're inerrant) and they are able to make you wise for salvation, then they are all you need - the final authority on all matters of faith and practice.

The holy spirit coming upon on the apostles at Pentacost? The Great Commission? What about the durr evidence that any other Christian church can be tracked back to its historical founder(s) (Luther, Calvin, Henry VIII, John Smith, etc.), yet the history of the RCC actually goes back through every pope to Peter himself? What about the Council of Nicea, or the Council of Jerusalem, or did you forget to read the Acts of the Apostles in its entirety? 'Cuz technically that's the bible too. Let me know how many southern baptists or whichever "true church" you know of was represented in the debate on Manichaeism.

    Jesus did not find the Catholic Church. Denominations and religion is man made. God does not care about denomination, he cares about us having a relationship with him which you can only get through salvation. The "Church" that Jesus was referring to in the bible was everyone in the body of Christ. The church is not a denomination or a building. The church is the people! Which is everyone who is saved and are in the body of Christ. So we should support everyone in the body of Christ whether they are Catholic, Protestant, messianic Jew, or non denominational.

      "Orthodoxy" is quite a prideful name, as is "Catholic." The former says only they are "orthodox," and thus only they have the true faith. "Catholics" are called such since they think they are "catholic" (universal) are therefore the only true church. Both claims are BS, and even though "Protestant" has a negative ring to it, it reflects the truth of the protests needed to reclaim the true faith lost by some Catholics and Orthodox.
      And yes, the term Catholic was far more appropriate prior to the Great Schism of 1054, Catholic means universal, and while all Christians are united (whatever tradition they come from), the Catholics think of Protestants, etc., as "separated brethren."

      Think about what you just said. God doesn’t care about your denomination. For over 1500 years there was only one Christian denomination. It believed what all the other religions did not. Was founded on a core belief the others were not. Jesus did not come here to die for our sins and give us all the knowledge we needed, in order for man to decide how to worship him. He gave instruction. The Catholic Church follows that instruction.
