@pault1289 thanks paul. Love mat riders videos. Looking forward to see his perspective of the TA. Shame I'll probably miss him as I'll be riding the South Island
Thanks Matt. Means a lot coming from you. My wife and I eagerly watch all your videos the day they come out. We will be doing the South Island portion of the TA from the 4th-23rd Jan. Would be great if the stars align and you are there then too. Message me if you need any help in Auckland or questions.
I think a fairly common mistake UA-cam travel people make is that they show more of themselves than more of what they see. We know what other humans look like, the real value is to see the water, sea, lighthouses, bikes, mountains. I wouldn't waste a second of video on anything but that amazing scenery. Your videos come closest to ideal. Thanks for bringing us along.
Looking for something to ride to on the bike trainer during our cold Canadian winter, great videos. Having bike toured NZ both Islands, this has brought back so many great memories and familiar places,. I'll ride all to the end before we can get outside again in the spring. Many Thanks.
Welcome to UA-cam Bill, I see today is your first day. There have been a lot of requests for this content, but I just delete them. The Internet isn't ready for this level of viewing load.
Thanks. I was impressed by my friends Aeroe rack too. If you check out my Twin Coast video you will see that I've put the same rack on my wifes full suspension bike. I wasn't as keen on the Aeroe 12l dry bag. The material seems to think. I went with a 15L Ocean Pack bag from Aliexpress.
@scottbeattienet both worked well. Aero is better for a bike woth dropper post or rear suspension. I wasn't a fan of the aeroe dry bag, this one is 15l from aliexpress.
Liked the video, I’m doing the TA this year and it’s nice to see what the trails look like. Would you do the Hunua traverse again or go around the coast road? I’m originally a North Shore boy (born in Devonport so nice to see that) so have explored Hunua and the coast before, but not on a bike.
Good on you. We came into the traverse via the weekday roads (logging trucks on the other road). There were two huge hills. The second one was too much for me with that load. I'd say that it did me no harm walking and the dams made up for it. I'm going to do it again this weekend without bags, and with my e-wife.
thanks, we just rode the standard TA routes. you can get the route from the books and the GPX that is all available at www.touraotearoa.nz/ enjoy the ride!
Hey Carl great video, I'm pretty sure I went to high school with you on the shore. I'm planning on doing the TA in the next few years and you've got some great details here, cheers Perry 👍
Much appreciated, mate. I'm looking at doing the TA north island in a few weeks. A friend suggested it necessary to change your bike chain after 90 mile beach. Do you reckon that's necessary? Cheers.
By the way@@cmortimernz , how did you find traffic in general on some of these hilly / narrow roads? In my experience, a lot of NZ roads aren't great for cycle touring (unless you enjoy getting intimate quarters with a truck and trailer). Thanks again!
@JoshuaJohnsonOutdoors I found traffic to be really light and good. Surprising for the time of year (January). We were on state highways for a very small amount of time, but the shoulder was wide most of the time. Some times we rode for hrs without seeing a car
I'm pleased you enjoyed the videos. The bike is a trek x-caliber 9. It's a cross-country bike and was perfect. Not one issue. Check out the Gear and Packing video if you want more info.
Came here on the recommendation of Mat Ryder, stayed and subscribed for the humour and great video.

Fantastic video. I'll be heading out on the TA in January and this is exremely helpful. Cheers.

Oh this is my dream trip and destination!
I enjoyed your thanking the cows for giving way. That's good manners! Thanks for posting your adventures!
Such polite animals. Cheers
Enjoyed your videos good to see some humour.
Awesome videos, great scenery and Dad jokes - keen to understand more about Vans Trek bike, any chance of a dedicated video ?

Beautiful
Good video. Enjoyed it. Noticed you've fitted Aeroe rack gear. Just fitted it to my dual suspension bike. Very happy with it so far.

Which storage system worked better between the two bikes? Aeroe looks great ... vs the other which did you guys like any whyy ?

All good, hope you get a tail wind too. We started with new chains, just removed them and gave them a really good clean that night. Good as new again.

what model trek bike are you using?
Hey mate. Cool video. What model Garmin are you using? Thanks.
We were both using the Garmin Edge 520. They are great. May have been superceded by the 540
how did you get to cape rienga?
I was lucky to have my wife and Dauther drive up with us. They enjoyed the journey
Can you please work on your Maori pronunciation?
That was me working on it. It was a shocker without the retakes
New Zealand
