WHY Isn't This A Standard Feature ON ALL GUITARS?

- Although the Sustainiac system has been around a long time, and it adds unique and expressive abilities to an already great instrument (the electric guitar), sustainer pickup systems are still not a mainstream feature on most guitars. Should that change? Why isn't this more widely used? Using my Schecter Banshee Elite FR-S, I examine this question.

I own and love the Schecter Reaper 6 with Floyd Rose and sustainiac, I primarily use it for tunes like Steve Vai For The Love of God , But they do very well for ambience behind the rhythm as well as they make solos a hella lot more fun lmao
I have one as well. The Schecter Reaper 6 with Floyd Rose sustainiac PU..
I have a Schecter C-1 FR S in Black Cherry, stunning guitar that is easy to play.
The sustaniac can create some great sounds if used togeather with the Floyd
trem, but unless you are into music that sounds good with the effects, then
after a while the novelty wears off.
Still a useful addition to at least one guitar in your collection🙂
I have a Jackson Dinky FR-S. It a fine player for the $, but I totally agree the novelty wears off. I'm looking into making baritone music, but using the Sus for harmonic overtones.
I have the same guitar except mine is in the Sweetwater exclusive Aquaburst. Real Floyd, Seymour Duncan Full Shred, Sustainiac with the Ebony board. That Aquaburst finish is so deep. But I love it and it's my number one. Even over my guitars that are 5x the cost. Such a winner.
Wow! I don’t know what was more stunning, the Axe or your Jam. Fantastic brother.
Thank you for making this amazing video! I mean no one have ever made video like this about sustaniac system and schecter banshee on UA-cam before!you just brought out the beauty of this amazing piece of art! Thanks so much again and good luck!
That may very well be the coolest guitar I've ever seen featured on your channel.
Props!
I've been wanting a sustainiac for forever now!
New years resolution!!!
I SHALL have one !!!! Soon!!
Doug from Atl. Just had a sustainiac put on my squire strat vibe 70s has. Love the damn thing.. would never even heard of them without utube. Thanks for the excellent content, introducing me to such cool products.
I love your shreds and just your general playing it's so organic and beautiful. Wish I had the knowledge of playing you have sir.
No disrespect to maxx but he doesn't do anything too technically difficult to the point where you couldn't play it if you practiced avidly for a couple years. Get to it!
My first electric guitar was an ASI Sustainiac. Got it when I was 17 back in 1987 I really haven't found a guitar I have had as much fun with since then. Seeing this video has instantly created a strong urge to get another one. Great video, man. Thank you.
Very thankful you mentioned the Ebow, Max. I've never owned one of these sustainor boxes, but I *do* have an Ebow. Haven't tried including it in my material in several years, but I dig it.
I have that exact Sun Valley Super Shredder you showed the picture of - bought it specifically because it was the lowest-cost Sustaniac-equipped guitar I had seen. The guitar is fantastic and I like the Sustaniac feature a lot, although mostly what I've used it for so far is to create ambient drone stuff (which it is obviously ideal for).
You are right brother I love the Sustainer System I now know it exists and are looking to get one~
That would be a great addition to any studio guitarists ensemble. Great video
I am a big Def Leppard fan and i LOVE to play their music. Phil Collen uses one. I was in line for Ibanez RG60ALS then they decided to discontinue them so I looked at Schecters. I ended up getting a Schecter Hellraiser C-1 FR-S Black Cherry color. It's on backorder like a ton of guitars are. I have been waiting for one with the Sustainiac since April. I almost want to jump ship and grab another Schecter model but the Hellraiser is so beautiful that I am going to wait. Great Video!! I agree more guitar manufacture's need to make guitars with this feature. At least a couple of models with it!
When musicyo owned Kramer they had a Baretta Infinity sustainer. I owned one and it was pretty cool. I still have the guitar and it's morphed into many configurations. It is now a single humbucker with custom paint.
That sustain & feedback sounded awesome!
Great video with awesome sounds! They make a super shredder with this feature and I really want one. Opeth’s Blackwater Park album features a lot of E-bow and the way they use it is very cool. Listen to The Drapery Falls
I have never had one but I have been wanting one. I love the way they sound.
My Apocalypse Red Schecter C-1 FR S is a joy to play. This pickup in the middle position with some delay is pure fun!
Hey max love the show I bought a dj ashba signature scheter three months ago. Never knew about sustaniac I love it. Great video learned a lot. Maybe you could review the dj ashba sometime if possible. Thx for the show I've learned a lot from u. And happy piloting
I have a Hellraiser with a EMG 81 and the Sustainiac in it. It has the Floyd Rose 1500 and I upgraded a little. Titanium string lock insert blocks, Brass block from FU-Tone, trem block from FU-Tone and Stainless Steel nut screws. Best Guitar I own. Great video Max!!
I have the Schecter DJ Ashba model. It comes with the Sustainiac system, EMG active pickup in the bridge, a Floyd Rose and a kill switch installed. I added a D-Tuna so now it has all the options I could ever want. Its a killer guitar, you should check it out. Good video!
Yes I'm a fan of sustainiac and of the ebo. Thank you for reminding me I need another sustainiac
Had never heard of this. Sounds awesome.
Yup I have a schecter sun valley super shredder with a sustainiac FRS. I love it
You Got it Brother, The Sustaniac, is in a league of its own, I have the Schecter Silver Mountain, with the Sustaniac, and that guitar is absolutely phenomenal to play, Great show Brother! Avid Follower!!
Well it's not a standard feature because it's way too expensive
Exactly
800 quid is not that expensive for a guitar. and sustainiac system itself is not that much more expensive than say a set of Fishman Fluence pups.
I have a Jackson Adrian Smith SDX with a Sustainiac with Dimarzio AT-1 bridge and HS-2 in the middle. Sound amazing!
I have a Fernandes Sustainer guitar, it's also great combined with a synth pedal, (I use the Boss SY1), and a volume pedal . I've also run it through filters and sequenced gates to create rhythms similar to electronic/ glitch style percussion tracks. It's also great for adding textures and depth to my looper jams. Totally recommend people checking out a Sustainer of they get a chance.
Cool setup . I remember back in the 90s when Fernades guitars came out with them . I never tried a sustainer ,but Ebows for sure .
I absolutely love my Schecter Sustaniac!! great video! I have been playing for 55 years and this is the best thing yet. Yeah, the batteries are a pain but come on man this thing is so cool!!
I totally agree with u, get as many sounds, but still beleive in the one axe tone......
Yeah, I'm an old one...... enjoyed your playing, keep feeding us !!!
Have the Schecter Apocalypse C-7 FR-S with the sustainiac system on it.... LOVE this guitar.
Cool intro dude! Very nice solo! This guitar looks cool!
Thanks a lot!
It’d be cool to play around with at times but it isn’t anything I would use enough to want it on my guitars. I had the same experience with the neck pickup being noisy when not activating the sustainiac.
I couldn't agree more! I've been looking for the right guitar with a sustainer setup for a very long time. I know schecter has a lot of different models with it but for some reason I've never got along with Schecter.
I own a Schecter BlackJack SLS Avenger with a Sustainiac I bought about a year ago. I bought it because it’s a great instrument, but also for the Floyd and Sustainiac. With the 3 modes of sustain and harmonics it is possible to do straight up stuff or get creative and get sounds that would be hard to get any other way. One main area it is useful is with modelers and the fact it’s much harder to get smooth, complex harmonic, “amp like” sustain into feedback especially at lower volumes. They work great in that situation.
I agree with you 100% and have to imagine it accounts for a large portion of Schecter’s sales.
I have a Dave Kushner signature Fernandes Ravelle with the Sustainer pickup. Its a lot of fun to play with the harmonics and feedback, and way easier to use than my Ebow. I've been wanting to get a guitar with a Floyd and a Sustainer to do some of the things you demoed.
My Schecter Blackjack Diamond series has Sustaniac. I can't imagine playing without it.
Freaking sweet. I have been curious about that thing since i noticed it on the wall!😃
How did i miss that review?
I’ve got the purple Schecter you reviewed, with lots of gain, i find it difficult to mute the sustainer, instead of constant switch flipping.
What it does clean is cool, but I don’t play clean often, the ebow
is about as controllable, but you have to hold it.
What is surprising is how clean the sustainer PU plays, it’s actually great for jazz, even on hi gain it does not distort when the battery is off! Powerful midrange chime, but no real lows are available, and it’s a neck mount, so it obviously cuts the lows a bit. That was the biggest revelation, I love playing the sustainer PU
without the sustain🙂
I have a Schecter Avenger Synyster Custom C with the sustaniac. I wasnt for sure if I liked it at first but the more I play it and have gotten a little educated about it, I am liking it more and more. Its cool!
I bought the sun valley super shredder from schecter mainly bc of the sustainiac feature and it's one of my favorite things to plug into an amp!
Robert Fripp (King Crimson) and Steve Hackett both have used the Sustainer pickup + Floyd Rose setup in their custom guitars (both Fernanes-made, I believe). Granted, they are top-tier legends, but they practically invented a significant amount of modern guitar vocabulary and techniques, and I loved what they've done with these tools. I know it's not for everyone and there are certain limitations that people have pointed out with regards to the background noise, feedback, static, and the overall reliability... still, I've been using an e-Bow for years and love the effects I get outta them; I'd love to have a Sustainiac pickup in any of my guitars.
Picked up the schecter e1 fr special a few years ago. I think it's on your wall lol. The purple Explorer shape. I agree they're a ton of fun
I got an original Fernandez sustainer, bought used at guitar shop years ago for $200.00, green chipped off paint, tarnished Floyd rose. The staff at the guitar store thought I had the amp up too loud causing feedback, not so. My son has the guitar now looking into stripping old green chipped paint off to clean it up. But it sounds spectacular, just like your Schecter.
I love my schecter c1 apocalypse fr s red reign and its sustainiac. The neck pickup still sounds great even with the sustainer not turned on. Its awesome and my number 1 guitar.
Hi. As I know the sustainer pickup acts like a single coil (even though it looks like a humbucker). How is the sustainer pickup (sustainer OFF) compared to single coil pickups (fender)? Thanks
I got a svs with the sustanic pup. I love it, my mix switch has shit itself any tips on fixing that?
I own a Schecter Banshee Mach 7 with a Sustainiac. Have you ever watched the anime "Bastard!!"? Basically it's where this Dark Wizard is imprisoned in a kid. TONS of metal references. It's a great, old school, "not for the morally timid" anime. Anyways, there's scenes where the kid remains in his child form, but his eyes light up and speaks in the loud boomy Wizard's voice. This is exactly what this guitar feels like.
You look at it, and its in its child form, a guitar form you are familiar with. Kick the Sustainiac on, and out jumps the Wizard with a loud boomy voice.
While engaged, the entire guitar vibrates from neck to body due to the set in neck. The vibration is very powerful. It feels like it's possessed, like it would levitate and say: "I am the ghost of Paganini. You call those arpeggios!?"
That being said, it's an untamed animal in that mode. It's no longer your guitar, its the Dark Wizard, and you work on his terms. There's a lot of feedback that must be maintained if you slop around, so this aspect causes you to play differently (or embrace it!). The payoff is sustain for days, bends that don't choke, and a different electronic world to explore. If you have fun playing outside the box, its great. If you aren't that type of player, and aren't crazy about Floyds to begin with, you'll probably hate it.
Using the Sustaniac disengaged, and as a neck pickup was better than expected. You're still utilizing the pickup in the bridge, but it doesn't sound as if you had the actual paired neck pickup. This being said, it feels great. It feels similar to my Seymour Duncan pickups.
The Schecter guitars are always an awesome bang for your buck, and getting a guitar with the Sustaniac routing already done is a workload off your shoulders. I'm not going to do it myself or pay a tech to do it. This was a huge contributing factor to my purchase.
If you want to explore something new, it's awesome. I love it. If you barely use the whammy bar for vibrato, and you're very grounded in how you think and play your instrument, I would pass.
Are there different versions of the sustainiac system? Some don't do certain things I read somewhere
I have a black cherry Hellraiser with that setup. I love it. I have a blast playing it. The only thing I don't really like about it, is the bridge pickup is an EMG. I'd like to put something passive in there.
I also have an E-bow, but the Sustaniac is just just so much more user friendly.
I have many of them. I agree, using the sustainiac modes in the studio it is so amazingly useful. The sustainiac also can function as a traditional pickup. The Stealth pickup has some adjustments to tilt the tone when using the neck pickup and can also be setup with a 6db boost. Also, the Sustainiac Stealth cannot be installed in just any guitar. The company has a long history and the site is filled with tips for setups, tips, wins, and what not to do.
I've been really into the Sustainiac systems since watching/listening to Phil Collen play his PC-1 line from Jackson. You can make some rad sounds and I'd also love to see more.
When this video starts, it appears that you have the bridge pickup selected, but the Sustainiac is active. Am I missing something? Does the Sustainiac work no matter where the pickup selctor is positioned? Please explain and thanks. :)
Maybe I'm unlucky, but I've found the sustaniac systems have a high failure rate. I've had 3 E-1 FRSs and 1 C-1 FR-S all of which I bought brand new, and the sustaniac system failed on all of them minus one of the E-1s. The worst one was the C-1 where the whole thing just became a dead pickup within a month of owning it. And no this wasn't a dead battery situation. As someone that owns mostly active pickup guitars, I'm used to swapping in new 9volt batteries quite regularly. Again, maybe I'm just unlucky, but if I'm not and that's just the norm for a pretty expensive system, then that could be the reason why the sustaniac system isn't more widely adopted.
I have a Sun valley super shredder with the sustainiac and I am now getting a high pitched hum anytime I switch to the pickup. New battery didn't help.
Not that it helps you but I have a Schecter Synyster Gates Custom-S from around 2010 (I honestly can't remember) and I've never had an issue. I swap the battery every October even though they're never dead. If you've had that many issues I would think it's got to be a legit problem and I've just been really lucky. Truth be told I'd actually prefer the neck Invader. ;-) Cheers.
I've had a total of 5 failures (3 pickups and 2 PCB control units). Sustainiac stopped issuing warranty work to me, despite myself having proof that each incident was faulty crafstmanship from the factory. These included rusted transistors, a broken-on-arrival internal trim pot, literal missing soulder joints, etc etc ad nauseum.
I have Sun Valley Super Shredder FRS with Sustainiac - love the sustain, but hate how it chews batteries quicker than it says it should. Feels like only a few hours of playing and its done. Think I would also prefer paired with Dimarzio SD rather than the EMG Super 80 or whatever it is.
This channel did a review of that guitar...
Hey Max thanks as always for the video and yes I got to try one at my lesson because my guitar teacher bought a Schecter with one. I never knew of it and I think a lot of guys and girls don’t know about them therefore guitar manufacturers don’t put them on because of cost. I would like one on my Strat for sure why not. Thanks again max
I have a Burny RLC 85, upgraded with the original Floyd Rose ( German made ) trem. It’s my go to for almost anything.
With the sustainer, or sustainiac system, you can produce tonal combinations, equal to Wah pedals, or the articulations from your hands, but using a combination of these and other effects and techniques together can produce a far more expressive sound option.
I have just got a Fernandez dragonfly great fun! Although it does sound tinny might change the humbucker to a Seymour! Any thoughts or ideas?
Also gotta mention that the sustainiac also has a feedback that creates even more options. I have a Jackson with one and its awesome. That being said I don't need it on all of my guitars, but when I do I'll reach for my Jackson.
what model of jackson curious
How do you leave the gain knob of sustain pickups? Thanks!🙏👍
I just ordered a Schecter Hellraiser C-1, FR-S and I agree with you, I just don't think that many guitar players know about them. Can't be a mass production thing either, even though the systems are pretty difficult to retro fit as per the Sustainiac page, I would have to say that also is probably not the reason, since there are a lot of mass produced guitars with complicated electronics. Maybe the reason is that a lot of guitar players are into getting that sustained sound through cranking a tube amp? I have yet to play one, but have watched tons of videos on these things. I do know that Joe Satriani and Steve Vai use these systems on their guitars a lot. I have always been an ambient guitar player, always look for something to up my game, so I'm really looking forward to getting mine this week. I can think of at least a 100 songs that I could use this sustainiac system on already.
I have a sustainiac on my Fernandez Ravelle Dave Cushner signature (Velvet Revolver)... Great guitar!
I think you're right Max they're very cool and eventually they'll be more commonplace
Max, is it the patenting that won't allow the sustaniac to be shoved on many variuos different guitars?
thx
Vin.
i own an old Fernandez with the Fernandez sustainer....love it!
Haven’t tried one, but it’s super cool. As primarily a bassist, I probably won’t go there, but I wouldn’t mine I’d my guitar mates brought this to the party.
I'd like a super modern guitar with stainless steel frets, a sustainer, Fishman fluence, and I wish evertune had a floating bridge because I can't get along with Floyd's but I love what you can do with them
Vai has been using this system for a while now - opens up a creative window to do many things musically
I use an alesis microverb on the largest room setting 25 percent on mix knob for prolonged sustain on any guitar or pickups.
Love the Sustaniac on my Ibanez JS1CR. 😎
What kind of output does the sustainiac pickup have ?
I have the same guitar it was kind of expensive I purchased it used for 750 at guitar center in Springfield missouri I'm not sure of the date it was made,I like it I create many different things with it ,I think if people tryed it as you said many more would turn to those types of guitars ,I do think alot of people dont think it's very practical though and that's why they disengage from playing them ,phil Collen of def leppard uses a guitar with a sustain system he utilizes it very well to point you dont know he has one in his guitar, there are settings on the system in which you get short to long variations I'm not sure how Phil sets his ,mine is set kinda middle if you will, I'm still learning how and kinda when to use it ,but again many players think it's not practical so I think that's the problem, anyway good video
After watching your vyez sustainer video I contacted that company, but the ordering process seemed a little sketchy. I would like to put a sustainer system on my Ibanez AR 50 which I modified with a tremelo bridge. Not sure what I need to do to get a sustainer system for my AR 50
I own the E1 FR S Special. I actually found your channel after I ordered it and was trying to see what I just dished out a couple k (that's CAD not USD) on.
Honestly I think it's just that they're not marketed properly. In the past I almost thought about getting an E bow but I thought it was kind of stupid and wondered why it couldn't be built into a guitar. I searched but I never actually found anything about sustainic. Basically forgot about my woes until Sophie Lloyd put out a video with one just over a year ago and I soon found myself waiting for mine to arrive.
It's absolutely amazing and soon enough I plan to order a Banshee Mach 7 FR S and probably won't buy another guitar without one. Guess that means I'm a Schecter guy now. When are they going to make the 8 string model dammit!
I do use an Ebow Plus and love the sounds that I can creat with it.
I was looking to pick up a sustainiac for a custom build and I can't find one new anywhere!
I still have a gap of knowledge how the pick up actually work. It ties into the bridge pickup somehow. So is the sutainiac is a pickup or just a sustainer? Is the bridge pickup is doing all the work? Can you explain how you get different tones with pickup selector?
I want to eventually get a schecter with a sustainiac and Floyd rose and fishman modern bridge pickup with stainless steel frets. But I was just looking at the Fender Ed O’Brien Stratocaster earlier today that has the Fernandez Sustainer.
Sound super cool!
I have the exact same model, cannot agree more!
I bought a used Blackjack SLS FR-S about 3 years ago for a great price. I figured that even if I did not like the sustainer, I could easily get my money back (or even a little profit, since the deal was so good!)
And now, it is my main guitar!
Love the sustainiac!
i got one those schecters its neato. i wished put sustainer controls closer to the pickups. hendrix did it with feedback but gets loud and noisy. fender has one it's the ed Obrien stratocaster.
To be honest, I never use the neck pickup but this pickup would change that!
I have the Digitech FreqOut pedal, which does pretty much the same as an E-bow,
the Sustaniac or the Fernandes Sustainer, the latter was there first, if I'm not completely wrong,
at least Fernandes already had them back in the 90's in some of their guitars.
The pedal has a decisive advantage, you can use it with any guitar, not saying that it is better,
I love the pickup versions as well!
I used to have a Boss DF1 that did something similar
I think it’s a little more advanced on this Schecter though plus you’re a ton more guitarist than I am
The Digitch Freqout pedal while kind of do the same thing..Now all of your guitars will do this :) .. to a degree. Worth checking out.
I had a Kramer "Floyd Rose Sustainer" back in he early 90's. Really miss it.
have the exact same guitar, except mine was a factory 2nd due to being dropped, and it's probably my favorite. I don't always play it, but when I do it's extra special......and extra special stuff can potentially come out.
Love schecter and was about to snag one. The feedbacker fx in the Headrush mx5 and freqout by digitech May make the same tonic experience work on any guitar. I like schecter for other reasons since they have great action and are very playable for shredding
matt bellamy is my biggest inspiration, muse got me hooked in guitar in the first place. i really want try one of these out it seems sacrilege not doing so lmao
Hey great job but my question I can't find a video of your setup just wondering what string guage and tuning do you use?? :)
.09s and standard tuning in this video!
Man, what an appropriate name for that awesome guitar, it screams like a fucking banshee! I just ordered my Reaper 6 with the sustaniac, can't wait to mess around on it.
It’s a cool feature to have. I’ve got it on my Chromeboy and I wouldn’t mind having it on another guitar or two but I wouldn’t give up my neck pickup in my EJ strat or my les Paul neck pickup just to have feedback abilities at low volume. Truth is as cool as it is, a little goes a long way. Kinda like a wah pedal imho.
So true, It's a dream when you can crank the amp and have sustained feedback on an EJ Strat. But for those who have to spend the majority of their playing time in headphones, a 9 volt battery and an EOB Strat is the second best...
One more thing, when recording in a home studio, just laying down tracks I find myself using the sustainiac on tracks
by itself just to add a little emotion to the riff. At times it's a little much but there are times that it enhances the entire
mix.
My next purchase will be an Ibanez JS model with a sustainiac. One I want is half the price of the Chrome Boy, and besides the finish and body wood is exactly the same. I’ve had an eBow for 12 years and it has a deep learning curve and is limited in how many strings it can influence at the same time.
I don’t have a sustainiac, but I purchased a sustainer from a company overseas (Veyz) for my Peavey Raptor (first guitar), and it’s amazing. The stuff that can be played is just amazing, but fitting it in was a pain, and one of the switches broke rendering it useless for a bit. But it sounds cool. Really got it because Phil Collen of Def Leppard uses one, which is necessary for the stuff they play.
3 no's but thought about it WAY MUCH!!! Ur theory makes absolute sense!!!!! Don't know if Schek makes lefty's but will find out. I thought about a sustainiac with a D'Marzio super D?! Sounds good 2 me. What do u think??!!
I have an Ed O'Brien Strat with a Fernandes Sustainer at the neck, a Texas Special in the middle, and a Duncan JB Jr. at the bridge. Several toggle switch positions allow you to play with harmonics if you wish, or not at all. It is a great guitar, not for metal really, but for Ed's purposes it works--creating sound landscapes for Radiohead. The only thing I don't like is the battery compartment is super-tight, making battery removal a chore. Don't know what Fender was thinking. But the guitar as a whole is awesome.
what is the advantage of this over just a sustain pedal?
I’ve had two different guitars equipped with the Sustainiac. I enjoyed both, but I never kept the guitars very long, mostly because of staticky noice coming from the neck pickup when the system was turned off. The cleans just weren’t there for me. When activated, it was fun, but not real useful majority of the time.

EVER heard of 'unique' channel names only?
This channel is quite OLD!
I had an older Jackson guitar and it was fun. I thought our band would be doing some Def Leppard but we never did. So I sold it.
