    I'm someone who grow up playing early cRPGs like Fallout 1/2, Baldur's Gate 1/2, Icewind Dale series, Planescape Torment, Arcanum etc. and Underrail is just the type of game that I've enjoyed playing which provides me with that old school cRPG feel (along with games like Pillars of Eternity 1/2, Pathfinder Kingmaker series, Tyranny, Shadowrun trilogy and Age Of Decadence). I'm glad that you are interested in the game enough to make a beginner's guide and to also attempt a Dominating run as I saw many people simply gave up on the game because of its difficult nature. It's a shame though, because this indie RPG game is very good, and I have much more fun playing through this game than Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2.

      I am so with you--this game is so good it's wild. I did a full Let's Play of the main game and the expansion with a psionic character and loved it. Dominating was also very fun too as I played a totally different build haha. I recommend this game all the time!

    When picking some of those secondary skills, it is worth looking at what your stats are, because some options are more efficient than others (high dexterity characters would have an advantage going with lock-picking or pick-pocketing since those are dexterity based skills).
    Hacking is an intelligence based skill. And for a character with a high intelligence (like the one in this video) hacking has some advantage over lock-picking, as a skill for opening various containers.
    Another example might be the various social skills. . . Both persuasion and intimidation are Will-based skills. And a high willpower psionic character (like the one in this video) would get a lot of "bang for the buck" on those types of skills.
    Of course, you don't have to pick your skills simply based on stats, but this is an angle that is probably worth considering.

    • @DrIncompetent
      @DrIncompetent  Рік тому +2

      These are great points, Rob! Thank you for this! Haha, I am just kind of recreating my own character based on what worked so well for me, but it's a great point that you can milk that Will and Int more with your skills--good to consider!

Sure, it wasn't the best possible way to do it, but I don't like stressing out about every single point haha. my wizdumb for beginners without metagaming and minmaxing it for someone who's facing the existential fret of getting started:
    feats are the real game changers rather than attributes - you can see them all in the level up screen, so adjust your stat distribution in preparation for the character defining feats you are going to take, and perhaps dump attributes that will not be enabling those feats or synergising with your choice of damage dealing and the skills necessary
    invest in 1 combat skill or 1 psi school - you only need 1 to get through it, 1 won't fail you, max it every step of the way, you can screw up in all sorts of ways, but that 1 skill can make it all right
    if overwhelmed by CHOICE, focus on investing in as many skills as you can afford to max on creation and every level up - which is 8 (you can spread yourself thinner regarding skill points when you're more familiar with the game and its systems and how much is enough and not enough)
    defensive skills and stealth are for characters that wear little or light armor - if you see your character kitted out in metal, they'll do you little good (nothing's stopping you from opting for light armor when you feel like it, though)
    don't feel obligated to dip into crafting skills from the get go - rather invest in them after you've found recipes you feel like you want to craft, see what the requirements are, and hit the skill requirements then - if you have a weapon or armor type in mind for your character, you can begin to intuit what sort of crafting you'll get the most out of
    1 social skill will do - persuasion gets a lot of mileage, intimidation, beyond intimidating in dialogue, has a lot of combat utility, possibly even halving!!! how effective enemies are at both hitting you and the damage they deal (if you take the Yell feat), and mercantile does a lot for your ability to shop, haggle and get paid for jobs
    don't feel obligated to take lockpicking or hacking or both - but 1 would do you some good, and with some synergy it doesn't take a lot of investment
    pickpocket is strong and gets you loads of utility items, money, ammo, everything - possibly even more than lockpicking and hacking combined

      Just finished Old Junkyard with my first character on hard. Hell of a ride, lots of encounters were somewhat luck based, even though I maxed out guns and throwing. Missing grenades still makes me savescum like crazy. What I like with my random will-int build - game really pushes me to use every tool at my disposal, like traps, grenades, doors. Crafting for sustainable economy. I still could commit and prepare for fights better, but If I never knew what I'm fighting against just entering a location I don't see how there is any chance to get through mutants, considering they are extremely good at reveal (i just stopped maxing sneak at 40 cuz it seemed useless, should've learnt hacking instead). Feels like the game is missing some scouting mechanic to plan out your fights better. Vents are good, but they're only at dungeons and limited, how am I supposed to know how to prepare for the fight? Almost like saveloading is unavoidable unless I already played through the game.

    Nice guide, but as an old time cave wizard, let me tell you - your base stats made you much weaker than you could be. As you said yourself, you can't do everything in this game, and even according to devs, you have to specialize, having average stats makes you miss out more checks than having two or three really high stats, there are usually different ways to the same things, but you have to specialize in one of them, otherwise you might lock yourself.
    For a PSI user, you should start with WILL 10, INT 8, CON at least 6 (for fast metabolism feat), later you max out the first two, really, having 5s in things just not to have it low is bad for you. If you want a more well rounded PSI with a sidearm, I suggest STR 5 (shotguns need 5 to use), PER 6 (+ snooping starting feat, which gives you effective 9 PER for discovering secrets), CON 6 (Fast Metabolism), WILL 10 (PSI always should start with that), INT 7 (bump to 8 at lvl4, for another spell slot).
    I know, I know, min-maxing is terrible, and in any other RPGs I'd dislike it, but Underrail is made especially for it, Stygian's devs and their forum actively make fun of people trying to have 5s in everything and playing it as other games, so one should propably play the game as intended and specialize.
    Also, on Oddity experience you have to take both lockpick and hacking or you'll fall out with lvling. You either go classic exp and no lock/hack, or oddity and maxed lock/hack.
    It's good to still see interest in this game, keep this up ❤

    • @DrIncompetent
      @DrIncompetent  Рік тому

      Thank you so much for the detailed advice my friend :)
      Haha, although the devs and others may make fun of people who don't min/max I find it to not be as fun on a first playthrough, because I don't like learning so much about the game up front that it ruins the magic of the experience and all I see are numbers and one optimal path.
      On a side not that isn't really germane to playing video games per se, I dislike the idea of specialization to that degree philosophically, because real people aren't generally like this and I personally appreciate having range in my life. Haha, but that's just me ;)
      But you make a good point that even though I may prefer a different system, Underrail isn't this and so new players should be warned. All I want to do here is help new players get into the game without spoiling the experience, because I do believe Underrail is a magnificent game :)
      I did find I was able to actually pass most skill checks in the game, beyond the ones that were huge for stats I didn't go into, with the use of food, items, and gear.
      I also went with this stat distribution because I knew it worked from experience, as this is what I chose in my first time, complete playthrough of the game and expansion on normal difficulty. I may have made the game harder for myself, but I had such a fun time with it--except for the Death Stalkers, haha ;)
      I was far more specialized with skills ultimately than stats, but I love your breakdown because if I ever want to play the game again on a harder difficulty, I will need to be much more careful with my stat choices :)

    • @adammusia9527
      @adammusia9527 Рік тому +1

      @@DrIncompetent yes and no, because there are dozens of "optimal paths", when you're specialized you still have a lot of options, and there isn't just one path. That's kinda the beauty of Underrail, you can beat it in many different ways, and sure, you may specialize with skills, but did you notice that you weren't able to get any of the most powerful feats? It's because they're stat based, and these feats often give much more than simple stat increase would. Let's say you make a Psionic 10 Agility, 10 Will, 8 Inteligence that uses Temporal Manipulation, Metathermics, and takes 3 very important feats: Sprint (adds additional movement points, requires 6 AGI), Blitz (Requires 10 AGI, lets you convert movement points into action points), and Thermodynamicity (you know this one, it lowers the cost of Fire/Ice PSI when cast one after another). So you activate Sprint + use a Temporal Manipulation PSI that gives you extra MP and AP, then you use Blitz to convert all of this movement to action, and thanks to Thermodynamicity your PSI costs very little, you're able to kill a whole crowd in a single turn or two, if some of your abilities are still on cooldowns, you use Temporal PSI to lower their cooldowns and start again. I really suggest trying to make a pure build, you'll still be able to max social and exploration skills, specialization concerns combat parts of the game, and you'll see how fun being powerful feels, also working on making your build that way is fun on its own accord, when with every lvl up you feel tangible power increase. Good hunting, fellow cave wizard!

    • @DrIncompetent
      @DrIncompetent  Рік тому

      Also, I went only lockpicking on my playthrough and had absolutely no issue with "falling out" leveling with oddities--I got way more oddities than I could even use, but maybe that's because I had fun just exploring the game and doing all the quests ;) So, in my personal experience, I don't believe both hacking and lockpicking are required-but that's just based on my own complete run.

    • @DrIncompetent
      @DrIncompetent  Рік тому

      Well now you are making me want to play again haha ;)
      I always avoid looking at any builds before a game to go in blind, but that's on normal difficulty. If I want to try a harder difficulty, I will definitely consider the build more :)
      I think by the end of the game with boosting stats as I leveled, I was able to get the most powerful feats as a PSI user, including several veteran feats--I think I beat the game at level 27? It would be fun to see what's possible if pure though, so thank you for explaining this--it is definitely enticing for a second run at it ;)

    • @adammusia9527
      @adammusia9527 Рік тому +1

      @Dr. Incompetent there are some rare oddities or oddities that you'd find earlier + lots of great, unique loot (even unique PSI mentors) are locked away, and it's only 10 point per lvl to max both. On which lvl did you start or finish Depot A? With lock/hack and exploring around until you face the wall of rocks/death you can easily get lvl 10 at the start of Depot A, while people often get there at 6 or 7 and have hard time going through.
      Oddity experience already makes you lower lvl than Classic, for example if you're fairly thourouh, you'll get about 14 getting to Foundry on Oddity, Classic can be even 3-4lvls higher (not that I play it, it makes the game too easy/too grindy). So yeah, there will be some oddities that you can't study anymore, but that doesn't mean that you're not a level or two behind if you didn't hack and lockpick, because there were other oddities that you've never seen, some people also do pickpocket for max gains (some unique, high value oddities are only available that way), but I never had the patience. I'm glad you want to play again, not sure if you want to try Hard, it can be annoying without a superbuild, at least early on, and if you do - read up on builds, and just plan your own, but with optimized stats, you won't survive without these good feats I mentioned, this game wants to do bad things to you, and you need to break it in order to defend yourself! There's an external character creator for planning builds, it's on Stygian Software's website/wiki, it has almost the same layout like the in-game creator, but you can lvl up there, see derived stats, save builds, look through feats to se when you'll be able to take them, and so on. And again, in any other game, I detest min-maxing/over optimizing, and I've been playing cRPGs since mid 90s, but in case of Underrail - that's the intended experience + when you optimize, you don't take these useless stats to 1, only to 3, so you get a little stealth penalty for example (and you can still be very stealthy, if you craft things using quality black cloth, because it equalizes the penalty). Go back to the caves, right now!

    I think I'll give underrail another try tonight. For my build I think I want to go for crafting grenades and mines. Its what I did last time but I put way too many points into stealth and lockpicking. My throwing wasn't even accurate and I didn't invist any points in other combat abilities so once they got close I was dead.

    • @DrIncompetent
      @DrIncompetent  11 місяців тому

      Awesome! I will say, grenades are amazing, but they have a cooldown, so you will want some other weapons to use, unless you can snare them all with your mines. You will want stealth to set up mines. Good luck!

    Just got this game since I want to get into CRPGs, got quite intimidated by the "Skills" tab during the character creation (didn't want to spread myself thin, wasn't sure what is good to specialize in etc.). I am currently watching the section of the video where you explain exactly about the skills. Would you say it'd be okay if I watch that part and then just make a character and start playing? I could come back to the guide eventually if I get very overwhelmed.

      Yeah, but before that PSI was inreasonably OP, you didn't need anything, no resources whatsoever to use abilities that hit harder than any weapons and granades, and often CC at the same time. It was unbalanced as hell. You had no innervation, so you didn't have to manage PSI slots, or anything like that, just wait till you regenerate and delete whole maps again. Sure, it was powerful, but it really wasn't fair + these updates didn't only change PSI, they changed a lot of things, and if I remember correctly they changed things from placeholder mechanics to intended ones, also added a lot of new content. PSI still is stupidly powerful, only now you have to gather magic mushrooms in caves, put about 20 points into a relevant crafting skill to make your own drugs from them, and take them whenever you need, so it's not such a huge nerf. I'm playing PSI again right now, I started doing Foundry content, and I have on me about 25 boosters and 25 inhalants easily, the rest is waiting in my room in SGS, but I often don't even need to restock, because I find more drugs before I run out of them or craft more and leave some in SGS for later

    • @ruko9876
      @ruko9876 Рік тому

      @@adammusia9527 Agree totally. Psi is still powerful even after that nerf by the developer Styg. I have completed various Dominating build with Psi and it is still doable if you manage your innervation slot and those Psi inhalant supplies properly. I have no problems clearing the dreaded Fetid Marsh area, beating Carnifex, defeating the secret super boss enemy on Utility Tower/Core City sewer and finishing up Deep Caverns with any Psi build. If you developed your character properly with the correct attribute points, feats and equipments, Psi build is feasible even after the 'nerf' update.

      Good question! Later, you will get more HP and your health hypos will be more efficient. But perhaps more importantly, the Doctor feat lets you bandage any wound and removes the "above 40% health" requirement, so you can bandage up even if you are really hurt and save hypos. I personally like this, but you could skip it if you wanted something else!

    Hi,
    So for a beginner like me I guess it's best to choose a perk who use knives for the hand-to-hand ?
    Or I'll do better with a Assault perk and even with that and in this case which is a good weapon to begin ? Pistol, a Submachine gun or a Shotgun?

    • @DrIncompetent
      @DrIncompetent  Рік тому +1

      Great questions! Honestly, I think hand-to-hand melee builds are viable as many builds are in this game, but maybe using a gun might be an easier start for a new player? You might want to have one main type of gun you use but also have a backup, in case ammo ever is an issue, or it's a group you are fighting or they are really far away ;)
      What ever you choose, go ALL IN on it and max out the attack skills you will use the most
