This game has lingered in the back of my mind for years as I'm "totally going to dedicate the time to it" "one of these days". Perhaps today is the day.
Honestly it's really not that bad to learn the fundamentals. Just turn on the checkpoint system and quicksaves/loads and run a few playthroughs without looking up something unless you are confused (like what a parasang is lol) Use these playthoughs with quicksaves and without permadeath to experiment. Figure out what you can and can't do, what different mutations/abilities do, what happens if you steal from that chest in the middle of joppa etc etc. Once you get comfortable/bored with that then try without the quicksaves and checkpoints. At this point it is all about different character builds, exploration and trying to complete the main story
Oh and maybe try using a controller? I have only ever played on my steamdeck/controller. Using a m+kb for controls in the game is way to overwhelming for me and I find controller much more intuitive
@@deputyswine I ended up jumping in after watching this. My fears of needing 20+ hours to learn were completely unfounded as the game is much more user-friendly than older roguelikes used to be. I must be weird (likely mildly autistic) because I actually think that the original UI was better. Sadly, the original UI got wrecked during the transition to the new UI. Even if you disable the advanced UI options, what you get is only a shadow of what the original UI was. The world is pretty enough to be worth putting up with a bad UI, but I still think it's a shame.

I love this game. I've been playing it since about 2015. Every year I will play a stint until I can merc a pyramid, then I put it down again. Still never beat it though. Love those high ego builds, as time and again my companions prove themselves to be the most dangerous entities in Qud.

I've been always thinking about trying Caves of Qud but I've never been great at roguelikes. Hearing that its got checkpoint systems so you don't get goomba stomped and lose your character sure sounds nice. The lore you relay sure is intriguing enough to buy it and give it a slog. Also nice video production and presentation and style! I'd love to see more videos!
this is great, I love CoQ and it's cool to see it get this kinda love. For those looking for a little more guidance than the wiki provides, qud zoo is another great resource
Great video! I'd personally like to see a playthrough of qud from you if you're up for it. I know there are others out there who have done it, but every playthrough of qud has its own unique sub-story in addition to the main quest line
Your projector theme is great. Definitely keep it! Bonus points for excluding your face. Don't fall into the "this is me" UA-cam trap. I kept watching for the Great content. But also I secretly wanted finger guns.
I was playing a few weeks back, had gotten much farther than ever before and was chigging along, making new discoveries and uncovering lore… and suddenly one day they released a huge patch that revamped the entire UI a and redesigned the starting town, among many other things. It was so deflating. I couldn’t bear to start over it miss g so much of I went on… and that allowed my adhd to get its clutches in, and I haven’t gone back since.
I watched this video a week ago and bought the game and died a few times over 2 hours. I put it down and picked it back up yesterday at 7am. It's now 11am the next day and I just had to sleep...
The best advice I could give for early game is-Guns are OP save the ammo for difficult encounters early on and as you progress you will have no real problem managing the ammo, my favorite is gun slinger, also save the first stats tonic you get and duplicate it with polymorphic gel
Love the video. I have been playing qud since before it was on steam. I have only been past golgotha like 6 times. and only once was I ever powerful enough to venture to the far right of the world map and explore ruins. I got a spiral borer after golgotha and used to at a location i knew I could get to z level -10. I found a ton of good loot down there.
Thanks, will give CoQ another go when I have some free time again. You’re pretty good, you know, as a UA-cam creator. May the Algorithm Bless You with Exposure

Glad, that I’m actually a fan of the game and doing well so far. Wear it like a badge of gamer honor
Great video! I'd personally like to see a playthrough of qud from you if you're up for it. I know there are others out there who have done it, but every playthrough of qud has its own unique sub-story in addition to the main quest line
I'm heavily considering streaming a playthrough! I've been meaning to for a while now 🤔

great video!
love the format! make more!
This is a wildly well done video
This might be what I needed to get motivated!
Your projector theme is great. Definitely keep it! Bonus points for excluding your face. Don't fall into the "this is me" UA-cam trap.
I kept watching for the Great content. But also I secretly wanted finger guns.
Really well done review! Always glad to see more Qud content.
Bench0, i really wanted to let you know that you have an amazing talent for this kind of video essays. I'm grateful that i came across your channel.
Cool stuff, I have a feeling you might see success with the format. Really enjoyed watching this one, keep up the good work man.
I was playing a few weeks back, had gotten much farther than ever before and was chigging along, making new discoveries and uncovering lore…
and suddenly one day they released a huge patch that revamped the entire UI a and redesigned the starting town, among many other things.
It was so deflating. I couldn’t bear to start over it miss g so much of I went on… and that allowed my adhd to get its clutches in, and I haven’t gone back since.
I've been on the fence about buying this game, but I think after watching this I'm finally gonna get it and try to learn it.
I have loved playing this game but I’ve loved watching you play it even more. still waiting for toes though!
amen
Great video
Love the video.
I have been playing qud since before it was on steam. I have only been past golgotha like 6 times. and only once was I ever powerful enough to venture to the far right of the world map and explore ruins. I got a spiral borer after golgotha and used to at a location i knew I could get to z level -10. I found a ton of good loot down there.
I feel called out by the Hobo Simulator in the wishlist comment. Great video btw.
Great video! I already bought the game couple of years ago but I never played it. Thank you for sparking the joy of roguelikes in me. Subscribed 🙂
Thanks, will give CoQ another go when I have some free time again. You’re pretty good, you know, as a UA-cam creator. May the Algorithm Bless You with Exposure
I have almost a thousand hours in Qud and I've made it to the Tomb of the Eaters exactly twice
I like the overhead presentation concept 👍
i beat qud 1nce, it was the fucking worst expierience ive ever had. then i became a chrome piramid and had fun.
