I just knew you would love this series. I can glad you made it through the ticking clocks in the first story. I forget how I first came to know about this series. I think it was probably in connection to either Space:1999 or Dr. Who. It probably was mentioned on one of the old usenet groups back in the 1990s. Another UK series to check out is the Tomorrow People. It ran from 1973 to 1979. Similar to this and Dr. Who, it was a cliffhanger style TV show. Well worth trying out.
Cliffhanger!! And Sapphire always seems to be the sacrificial lamb lol Tully is one of those old British types that are gradually disappearing from this world. He's full of prejudices and misconceived ideas, but has a warm, human, approachable feeling to him, too.........
The submarine might be HMS Thetis which sank on her sea trials. According to the Wikipedia entry 99 lives were lost in the incident: 51 crew members, 26 Cammell Laird employees, 8 other naval officers, 7 Admiralty overseeing officers, 4 Vickers-Armstrong employees, 2 caterers and a Mersey pilot. However, that was on 1st June 1939 and in the seance Sapphire said 1938.
When you say it's a terrible cliffhanger - it left you wanting to watch the next episode, didn't it? ;-) This is another great in what is close to being a flawless story. The interaction with the workmen on the stranded submarine is particularly chilling. Being in a sub that's stuck at the bottom is one of the worse ways to die that I can imagine. Whenever and however I check out, I want to be able to see the sky, or at least an open door, and hear the sounds of everyday life - instead of spending my last hours sealed up in a cold, dark metal box. I don't know if you took note of the year the sub went down - 1938. In a way, that makes things worse for them. Bad enough dying in a warship when you're a civilian, but dying in a warship in peacetime just doesn't seem right. Looking forward to your reactions to the rest of this story.
Yes! It's shamefull, that this serious role of her has been completely overlooked and forgotten, because of Ab Fab. (Hate that and never find that even funny, sorry!)
It does make me wonder how much more successful they would have been had they taken more of a lead from Tully, instead of antagonising the ghosts... (Or Steel antagonising the ghosts). It puts me in mind of the first episode, where Lead says something about 'all good experience for you Sapphire' implying that Sapphire (and possible Steel?) are new agents, liable to possibly making mistakes? Considering the ghosts do not seem malevolent, perhaps it would have been, at this juncture, a more useful venture, to try and create a more sympathetic relationship with them.
I wish to heavens Joanna Lumley was more remembered for this role and less for the broad comedy, as this episode alone is one of the sternest acting challenges I've ever seen anyone faced with, and she carries it off to intensely eerie effect.
There is a little bit of odd ness here. When Sapphire, Tully are sat on the bench, Steel asks Tully a question. "What is your way" There is echo sound as if he's projected the question rather than said it out loud and even a Tully's reaction is to look around rather at Steel.
I often wonder if your initial views of a show drop off a cliff after the first few episodes covered because you make the show so interesting that i stop following your coverage so i can go rewatch the show myself. Are you perhaps a victim of your own success? Good job Alexa!
At last somebody react something new old cult-series, my childhood favourite series. Can't wait for Your reaction to assigment 3, for me the best and scariest. 😱
Yes! I will be reacting to Outlander as I find time :) it is challenging during Q4 with my job but I will do my best to keep fairly up to date on releases for it.

Hi Alexa I like the sets in this story, and the characters are awesome too in billions of ways.
Joanna's acting is fantastic here.
Yes! It's shamefull, that this serious role of her has been completely overlooked and forgotten, because of Ab Fab. (Hate that and never find that even funny, sorry!)
Another excellent part of this equally excellent Assignment, as I've said before this is my favourite Assignment of theirs.

I think Steel forgot to speak for a moment...
Yes, he used his telepathy. I suspect Tully is either sensitive to it or Steel is able to project to us humans when he wants to.
😊😊😊great episode
How can I wait a whole week?!
Doctor Who level cliffhanger.

If I get at least one person to watch this show, I consider that mission accomplished!
Another series suggestion The Day Of The Triffids 1981 BBC tv show UK
