I like the sanuk's for comfort, but their appearance is cheap looking and if they get wet they soak up the water like a sponge and make weird squishy sounds when you walk. If all you care about is performance and comfort and especially if you don't want to deal with breaking in a sandal than the sanuks are the way to go. I think they both have their merits and practical usage, i would have a pair of both.
Up until 2002 or so, Rainbows were all hand-hand in San Clemente and they were by far the best sandal on the market. When they blew up, supply couldn't meet demand, they starting making them in China. Now they are an average sandal, the quality of a hand made sandal compared to a mass produced machine made sandal.......
Makes sense. I remember when I was in high school at that time and everyone had a pair. Never did get a pair. Always liked Reefs, even though they were made in China. Now they're made in Vietnam, and from what I read, they aren't the same as they use to be. Bought some Sanuks and they're alright but need an all rubber sandal for when I go in the water. Thought about some Olukai leather sandals, but again, worried about water. Thanks for the info.
Mr. G. actually they have started to make them in China and Japan is because of the glue used in production. They do make some models in San Clemente and if you go to the outlet you can see exactly which are made in the USA and which are made overseas.
I also live in orange county and due to the weather i used to wear rainbows whenever the weather permitted, however i recently switched to olukai's. i don't see myself going back even though the rainbows that I own are molded to my feet. the fit and quality of olukai seems to surpass all of the sandals that i have tried.
Nice review of these rainbows flip flops. I've been wearing reefs flip flops for a long time now and I just bought me a pair of rainbows. Question? They are the right size but they are very very tight on my foot.I have very very wide feet 6 EEEEEE with very fat wide toe . Flip flops are tight on my foot because of my foot being very very wide but are they supposed to be that tight. Did you have the same problem when you bought your flip flops. Wondering do you have wide feet and I need to buy a pair for wide feet or what. Thank you for sharing your video it was very good information.
At first I thought it was weird to have a video like this, but this was great! You've definitely got a skill for this. I'm from Southern California as well, and wear flip flops pretty much every day. I have a pair of Sanuks that I like, but am looking at getting some Rainbows soon because I've found that Sanuks are less durable and the material starts to like crack in ways that are not pretty. I think they're probably okay as long as you keep them away from the water, but I have a hard time doing that. I used to own a pair of Reefs that were very comfortable, but also didn't hold up to water well.
+Bekah Griffin Hey Bekah! Thanks so much for your kind words. I agree with the durability of Sanuks. You probably won't get anywhere near the mileage of Rainbows, but for comfort, they are great. I only have one pair of Sanuks right now that have this nice canvas top with a tropic theme. So far they are holding up, but I don't wear them all the time. Thanks for the visit!
I’m not sure about that damage but my Sanuks (Yoga Mat women’s version, plus I’m sorta big too) lasted me for 3 years. Only until the 3rd year they became very worn out. I love Sanuk, the only sandals I’ll ever wear, but I’m interested in Rainbows now... I might try them out.
Rainbows are the best, I’ve had my 302s for three years now. They sole is wearing on the back like yours but I’ve never had the threads come undone. They form to the foot perfectly and hold up so well, I wear them almost every day. I have my rainbows for daily wear and a pair of rubber reefs for wearing to the beach...
I have a pair of Sanuk yoga flip flops that I bought in a consignment shop. I paid $10 they look brand new. I have wore them for about 7 years and they still look and feel amazing. I would recommend them over rainbows. I also have a pair of rainbows that I dont wear that often because they are not as comfortable
Rainbows all the way. I keep a pair of single and double layers. My double layers are over 10 years old. My singles are 6.5 years old. My 10 + year old sandals have the thread issue you mentioned unfortunately. I just replaced my 6.5 year old single layers and still will use them as spares and keep them in the vehicle... my doubles are getting replaced too and I'll keep those on hand too... both old pairs are rough... but still very functional.
But is rainbow still what they were, seeing how 90% of them are made in China??? Unless you go down to the headquarters in California, you’re buying a product made in China without the scrutiny of Rainbows quality control. Personally I’ve read many negative reviews since the switch in manufacture
My 6yo son and I have been wearing Sanuks for about 2 years now. The Sanuks with the yoga mat soles are the most comfortable sandle out there. The only problem with them is, its easy to take a chunk out of the yoga mat sole. And that looks like what you have done. My son wears them everyday through the summer out playing. And they seem to hold up pretty good. We have two pairs that have lasted two years now.
One thing you must know when buying Rainbow flops, alway buy them a size smaller. For example if you wear a "large" buy a "medium". As they stretch, they will fit perfectly.
I had a bizarre warranty experience with Rainbow. I had the premium leather ones like you have. After a year I noticed that the leather was peeling away from the rubber sole. I sent them back via mail expecting them to at least glue them for me. A few weeks later I got a letter in the mail denying my claim, stating that I would have to pay shipping for them to send them back to me. I called the number on the letter and the Rainbow employee accused me of putting a leather treatment on them, causing them to peel. I told them I didn't put anything on them and they didn't believe me. I told the guy I wasn't looking for a free pair, just a bit of glue. He told me that the glue wouldn't hold on the treated leather. I told him AGAIN that I didn't treat the leather, and again he stated that I had. It was a horrible customer service experience. The only thing I can think of is that my pair got mixed up with someone else's at their return center... Either that or they are just complete pricks.
I love my rainbow sandals! Never tried a sanuk problem but I've heard good things about the sidewalk surfers. My rainbows are definitely the most comfortable shoe I've every owned. Whenever the weather permits, they are my go to shoe! They get pretty slippery in the rain buy hey it's leather. I've had my rainbows for over 4 years and they are just starting to wear through where my big toe sits.
I had a pair of Sanuks and after two weeks the edge of the foam yoga rubber also started to break off on the heel. I have a foot size 11.5 and had to take the larger size. Kept tripping over them on stairs : no good and customer service is lousy! might try the Rainbow The Cloud in black. Just returned a terrible Havaiana new black/leather sandal : new style to compete I guess with rainbow and Sanuk,Reef... sent them back and had to pay my own shipping . Waiting for refund. Didn't even wear them because the straps were already too loose when I received them and had no grip.
It's not quite a chunk, but it looks like they are starting to wear on the outside behind my little toe on the yoga mat top. Could be my rough feet. Haha. But I agree with you. These Sanuks are super comfy. I only wear my Rainbows now if I need to water the grass or something like that. I'm not sure how the Sanuks are going to hold up getting wet. I've read online that they don't do well around water. We'll see. Thanks for the comment!
I have a pair of Sanuk Vagabonds and the footbed hasn't gotten worn like the Beer Cozy pair yet. I've also had these since 2009. As for my favorite sandals, I'd have to go with my pair of Reef Smoothys. I've had these sandals since 2007 and while they're pretty worn at this point, they are still quite wearable and have plenty of life left in them. I should also note that I too am a large guy, so durability of footwear for me is a big thing. The soles of my Reefs are pretty much completely smooth at this point and the shape of my foot has gotten pressed deep into the footbed, but I'm not replacing them until it's absolutely necessary.
My first rainbows I had for 2/3 years and went off to college and took them home one visit and the left went missing and never reappeared. My second pair to replace those I had for less than a month before visiting a friend and having her dog chew through the straps. Four year laters I finally purchased another pair after a love affair with Birkenstocks, I'm just hoping the sandal gods are kind to me this time around.
Ya, I should point out that I'm from Upstate, NY. Sandal season up here is only about 4 months a year. Don't want mislead anyone about the life span of Reefs.
I've had my same pair for maybe 5 or 6 years and the leather is finally starting to come unglued from the sole. Apparently they don't honor the warranty if the sandals have ever touched water...
I'm a big fan of Rainbows. Had the same issue with the thread wearing off the strap, and similarly, I wore through the soles that it voided the warranty. Wish I knew about that policy a month or two earlier! Just bought a new pair to replace mine (after 4 years), so I consider them a value. Very interested in purchasing a pair of Birkenstock sandals next though..
Since you seem very knowledgable, I thought I'd run a question... For Rainbow sandals, I seem to be right between two sizes. For the medium, my heel comes right up to the edge of the back. On the large, there's about a half inch of space. How much space is right to have at the front and back of the sandal?
You'd probably be ok with the medium. But I like to have a little extra room, especially in the toe area because you never know when the edge of the sandal will prevent you from stubbing your toe or hitting your heel. That's my $0.02 worth.
Joe, Thanks so much for the review! I've been wearing Rainbows for 10 years now, and just got a new pair in the mail today. Being in SD, I only wear flip-flops unless I absolutely have to wear shoes, so longevity is important. My Rottweiler/German Shepherd puppy annihilated my last pair. I forgot how long the "break-in" period for Rainbows. How long did yours take?
Richard Sampson at least a couple of weeks. I found getting them wet and wearing them like that helped. I’ve actually moved to Birkenstocks and I’m really liking them for the extra support.
They also have a recycle program, if you send in your old pair they will repair them and give them to people in need. I think if you take them to their San Clemente place they give you a discount for recycling them.
Wow, three years into it. Amazing. I haven't found a pair of Reef's that I like yet. I'm still liking my Beer Cozys. I think the wear point on these was due to a--trying not to be gross--callus on my foot right in that area. I think that wore it down. But I still wear them all the time now.
i live in orange county too, what outlets do you go to for your rainbows? I have 2 pairs and got them both for $50 each. I'd love to get them for 30 or 40 like you said in the video
Hello Joe! I have a concern about size of tose sandals. What size yu wear? I ask you because many of those stores that sells this kind of footwear sells until size 12 and hard many times to find in size 13! I want those Sanuk for a gift for one o my best friends, but the problem is he is a big guy, 6'5" and wears a size 15, so I don't know if those ones are the chance to find in bigger sizes! If you know something about it, please let me know. Thanks!
The black Sanuks are size 13 and they really are too big. The Beer Cozys were size 12. I say "were" because my golden retriever chewed them up and they are no longer. Too bad because I LOVED those. My Rainbows, I think, were 12. Rainbows are always super tight when you buy them, or at least they should be, so they expand and adapt to your foot.
I had the same issue with the tread but I found that it really didn't make much of a difference for me. I continued to use mine even after the tread was gone and I had no issue
What color Rainbows are in the video? They have 2 browns that are similar to each other and then a Sierra Tan so just seeing which color you have and how they've aged. thanks
I believe they are the eXpressos which is the darkest brown. But I've had the lighter brown before. Seem like both wind up looking like the pair I have.
I have a pair from American Eagle for 30.00 that lasted me over three years. But to be fair I can only wear sandals may-sept. It snows the rest of the year here in Nova Scotia
Hey Quinn! I totally get how seasonal sandal wear is in your neck of the woods. But you didn't say what pair you had. Is it an American Eagle brand or another brand you ordered from them?
TitleistFJ33 They WERE broken in perfectly until my darling Golden Retriever decided to completely chew off the straps on both sandals! I haven't had my leathers in awhile now and I sure do miss them.
Never fear. "Burger Wars" will carry on, but more than likely, only on Jack's channel. I MAY do my own, solo, food review every now and then but I don't want to dilute what Jack and I are doing over there at JackOnTheGo. Thanks for the feedback!
For Rainbows, I don't recall them coming in different widths. Trust me, when you first buy a pair they should be very snugg as they will loosen up after they are broken in.
Great review! i love sanuks, and i'm on my second pair of sidewalk surfers(just ordered the yogi). i've been an olukai person, but i might switch to sanuk flip flops now that i've discovered how awesome they are.
I think I have tried one pair of Reefs but it was at a store that had a limited selection. I would definitely give them a shot. I think if these Sanuks don't work out, that will be my next test. And yeah, I know what you mean: after awhile the Rainbows really start to look nasty. Can't argue that point at all. Part of me sort of digs that as guy. You know, it's like that old beat up t-shirt or jeans you don't want to throw away. Haha. Thanks man!
Just a Broncos fan. I love Denver, though. Been there several times on business trips and saw a preseason game at Sports Authority against the Packers back in 2008.
no one mentions smell with the rubber based flip flops. I can only use leather lined otherwise stinky. Reefs are doing it for me ATM. Comfy but the best were when I leather lined the top of my cheap K-mart rubber beach flip flops
The bun is moist, the meat isn't overcooked or dry and the burger sauce goes well with.... oh wait, this isn't food review? :D Great job Joe. There was no eating involved, but still great video lol :)
No I meant if I was wearing them and they were very wet, I just let them dry. I've heard that if they are brand new and you want to break them in, you can wet them and then wear them. But just wearing them either way is the best way to break them in.
Hudson S the Sanuks in the video also got destroyed by the dog! The Rainbows are firmer but I can walk in them all day and they probably stand up more to use long term.
ROFL! That was hilarious. I thought that maybe you were commenting on the wrong video at first. Thing is, with some of the burgers we've had, I think the soles of my old Rainbows taste better!

Too bad rainbows aren’t made in the USA anymore, a majority of them are made in China. So that would mean Quality Control has done down considerably considering rainbow can’t examine every single pair while also keeping up with their paltry 10% manufacturing in the USA.
Rainbows suck! So expensive!! Their warranty is garbage. Don't get them wet or the leather will crack. Who doesn't get flip flops wet?? Sole doesn't last. Very uncomfortable at first. I've had two pairs and will never purchase again. Outlet is still $50, not $30-$40 BTW.
I like the sanuk's for comfort, but their appearance is cheap looking and if they get wet they soak up the water like a sponge and make weird squishy sounds when you walk. I absolutely prefer Sanuks, but Reef is also a quality comfortable sandal. I don't really care for Rainbows but some people like them.
Thanks Jake!
I've had my SanUk Beer Cozy 2's for 9 months. Still amazing and comfortable. Last week my boxer ate my right one. Immediately ordered another pair.
ShortyKills I’m with ya on that bro!
@@JosephChavez Holy shit you're still active. *Subscribed... I like your style man :)

I love my reefs
My first rainbows I had for 2/3 years and went off to college and took them home one visit and the left went missing and never reappeared. My Rainbows lasted seven years and I did have the "Big toe wearing" that you mentioned.
Joe,
Thanks so much for the review!
I think if you take them to their San Clemente place they give you a discount for recycling them.
probably a super late comment . and also sanuk has a one year warranty 😊
Thank you for your honest review!
Hey, thanks so much. That is very kind of you to say. The support means a great deal.
Wow, three years into it. Amazing. I haven't found a pair of Reef's that I like yet. I'm still liking my Beer Cozys. I think the wear point on these was due to a--trying not to be gross--callus on my foot right in that area. I think that wore it down. But I still wear them all the time now.
I just got the Reefs J bay III and they are great
i live in orange county too, what outlets do you go to for your rainbows? I have 2 pairs and got them both for $50 each. I'd love to get them for 30 or 40 like you said in the video
The official Rainbow Outlet in San Clemente.

3yrs into my pair of Reef's got that little cut thing you got. Like the Reef's, may have to try the Sanuk's next.
i am in diffrent country and usually we dont wear this kind of shoes
but still i enjoy watching with my morning coffee
I had the same issue with the tread but I found that it really didn't make much of a difference for me. I continued to use mine even after the tread was gone and I had no issue
Yeah, the problem is my weight and how much I used them. Oh and my Golden Retriever that decided to finish them off! LOL
Quinn Crossley wow...u can only wear them half a year and plus they cost half the price. Fair
Thanks Yousef! What country are you watching from?
Hey Quinn! I totally get how seasonal sandal wear is in your neck of the woods. But you didn't say what pair you had. Is it an American Eagle brand or another brand you ordered from them?
Man your rainbows are broken in perfectly. I am a big guy too. Mine are still pretty tight on my foot. Ready for them to stretch.

The double layer kind are the best.
Yup. The only ones worth getting.
hi!
what do u recomend i got a very small fot i mean not wide what do u say in english narrow maybe? i like a snugg fit.
For Rainbows, I don't recall them coming in different widths. Trust me, when you first buy a pair they should be very snugg as they will loosen up after they are broken in.
thanx!
Great review! i love sanuks, and i'm on my second pair of sidewalk surfers(just ordered the yogi). i've been an olukai person, but i might switch to sanuk flip flops now that i've discovered how awesome they are.
Try the high in quicksilver
Do You live in orange County North Carolina
American Eagle Brand got them at Payless Shoe Source they look like the rainbow sandals you have
no one mentions smell with the rubber based flip flops.
There's a reason those types of shoes go to outlets at a discounted price.
Sanuks feel great but after a month the yoga mat fails and holes appear
Rainbow. First pair, ten years. How can you go wrong?
Have you tried Volcom Recliner?
I haven't. I'll keep an eye out for those.
do u know how to fix the sandals after they have been in the water (rainbows)
Fix how? I can pretty much soak my Rainbows and the next day they are good. Probably good to let them dry away from the sun or heat.
Joseph Chavez soak them in what
No I meant if I was wearing them and they were very wet, I just let them dry. I've heard that if they are brand new and you want to break them in, you can wet them and then wear them. But just wearing them either way is the best way to break them in.
Heloful vid thanks!
I got my rainbows like 6 months ago I love them but I didn't like breaking them In they left blisters and I have scars
Anna-shai Steadings maybe they were too small or u wore them after getting them wet and while wet. Not good to wear any shoes while they are wet.
Dang ur an animal on those sandals i am a heavy guy and my sandals are still in great condition
thanks im getting rainbows
Terrific. Let me know what you think!
I got rainbows
They say that they should last over 10 years!
Your book shelf looks like my dads, are you a pastor? haha
Ha. No. Just love books and especially those relating to the Bible.
oh awesome! Just bought a pair of rainbow singles, I really like them so far. Excellent comparison
Hudson S excellent. I recently had to replace mine because my Golden Retriever chewed the straps off my old pair.
Oh man that's rough! How'd they compare to the sanuks after using them for awhile?
Hudson S the Sanuks in the video also got destroyed by the dog! The Rainbows are firmer but I can walk in them all day and they probably stand up more to use long term.
ROFL! That was hilarious. I thought that maybe you were commenting on the wrong video at first. Thing is, with some of the burgers we've had, I think the soles of my old Rainbows taste better!
Saunk's don't have a leather top sole and Rainbow's are touher.
Rainbows if they get wet are not Slippery like rubber or yoga mat material. Rainbow is much more robust too. Anyone who thinks otherwise is crazy.
Have to agree but I also moved on from them to more softer materials. Good sandals just my tastes have changed.

you're not supposed to get leather sandals wet!! you will ruin them
Too bad rainbows aren’t made in the USA anymore, a majority of them are made in China.
