The later takes where he really starts changing the dynamics and using the rims and changing the tones of the toms sound incredible. No matter how good a drummer someone is, they can always change, improve and experiment
I love Take 2 because it's the perfect example of drumming yourself into a corner and miscalculating how much time you have. He kind of undershot the downbeat there which is totally fine and happens to everyone, but seeing someone at his level do it gives me a bit of confidence. It's like watching Michael Jackson trip while dancing, it's totally understandable that it happens, only thing that matter is the recovery and Larnell recovered flawlessly!
I cannot even conceive what his brain is thinking or planning with this type of flow. Mad respect for his choices so musical and interesting. Not just chopping his @ss off. One of our beloved modern greats!! Big fan! NABSTER in Nashville!
Take one is just pure energy, and it seems he's in a complete flow state just doing all the amazing shit he can do! take 4 is that energy Chanelled with his thoughts and creativity that add breaks, dynamics and phrasing that makes the solo fit well into the song play to the music,
the "mistakes", which i dont even think i caught any beside one on take 2 where the big "ahhhh" appeared on the screen, is just the robot inside of him attempting to blend in with the rest of humanity as to not raise any suspicion
The last Take was unbelievable🙌🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 The finesse with which Larnell Lewis plays with when he plays like that is simply phenomenal, so technical but he makes it seem easy
I need my tom rolls to sound like that for goodness sake I’m going to work my ass off this year to get there! Larnell is such an inspiration man, musically my favorite drummer in the world.
Not to take away from his skill or playing since he’s one of my all-time favs, but a good chunk of that sound is his tuning. Make sure you got a nice fat, cutting tuning and it’ll help you get there a lot faster. Again not discounting his skill at all! I mean, his micro-timing is immaculate
@@BradsGonnaPlay well, to be fair I play an e kit right now because I live in a house with others but I’ve only been drumming for one month so I have a long way to go
@@2ndAveScents oh right on! Have fun with your practice journey; it’s such a fun instrument to work on. Practice your techniques, rudiments, and playing to a metronome. You’ll improve faster than you think :)
@@BradsGonnaPlay dude I got so much better so quickly it’s so encouraging because of watching guys like this and so many good resources online. I’m going to sign up for Drumeo because I don’t want to make any bad habits and build a strong foundation. I might actually hire a teacher if I can find one
We NEEEED a video on Trilogie!!! It's my absolute favorite, so much variation and every part is so unique, I feel like levitating every time I listen to it!
If you have any doubt that he could be human, the man is like 9 feet tall and as large as the toms in front of him... I swear to God I'm 6'3" and almost had a heart attack when I saw how high his throne is during a clinic. Larnell is a UNIT y'all
Went back and watched it again and caught that he was about to rip his headphones off by accident lol, just after the knife cuts (I like to call them like this) at around 4:08
Thank you so much for sharing all these behind the scene. These songs are killer. Larnell's musicality is really on another level. His ability to empathize what he is playing on top of is just magical
I try to get the whole song in at least 3 takes First play thru is my tightest Then consecutively looser and more open to trying something wild in take 2/3 Then I try to get comped then if I have an idea or I need to punch something in bam Done on to the next
Amazing to see the creative process in action. Seeing how many rhythms and methods can be squeezed out of a simple backing. Pushing his skills to every corner of his ability to see where they brake down. He seems like a man who learns something everytime he sits at the kit and craves and wants the kit to hit him back and teach him how the song needs to be played. Beautiful
Whoever mixed this is awesome. I can hear both the drums and the other music playing. So often the reference music gets drowned out and I can't hear it
What I love about him is that although he have all the chops is not just 32th note galore. Soooo much dynamics, musicality, taste and touch. 🔥🔥🔥🔥💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Incredible. Mix is so tight, so balanced. I like the first take. Such a tasty tune -- gotta love that Latin feel, and IMO, its the most difficult rhythm to solo over, and he made it look easy. Loved the Gadd reference in the 4th take. Crazy thing is that I felt take one was the best and after the second listen it was. He's a beast.
LMAO if I wasn't watching him I wouldn't have clocked that as a mistake even. There's so many absolute beasts out there these days, Larnell is definitely one of Those drummers
@@MathieuFiset maybe even just a pause for effect... but yeah let's say hesitation because makes me feel better about myself 😅 thanks for putting this up! I'll be studying it for a while

Totally !
Totally agree
👍
I think that was the take in the original video
AnotherSuperHuman🤗
My drum teacher: "ok I'll show you ONE more time."
This only proved to me that this man has infact been sent from a different realm
Human from another dimension ?
Smart of him to miss one hit out of 10 thousand, so we can foolishly believe he's actually human
This man is one of my all-time favs in no small part because he hits his snare like it owes him money. Unbelievably talented drummer.
Check Corey Fonville, esp playing with Super Blue. Saw it live, and he gets a crack out of the snare like few others.
He completely changed the way I approach the drums. He always teaches drums in a musical context
As did Aaron Spears.
I think he's just trying to seem more human, its all a trick
I think… he from the same planet that Jacob Collier and Calvin Rodgers from just across the way😅
It’s always the kats that play Yamaha it seems 💪respect brother God bless🙏🏿
The aaaaaahhhh was a short pause , so important in drum solos
Indeed ;)
The entire drum community should bow down to him at least once.
100%
the swag at 4:09 when dodging the headphone cable is insurmountable
That “ Take 4 “ tho !!! 🔥🔥🔥
Yess !
Ugh the camera zooms and stuff were giving me a headache but Larnell still killing it as usual
I know ;)
The camera deffo to much. He doesn't need added spice let us enjoy what he's doing
I thought it was cool
waaaah waaaah
Also why is the back of crash taking up a third of the screen. Can't even see his hands most of the time
Take 3 made me audibly go "UGH! 😩" Larnell's a BEAST

at 4:49 you can see him leave his body and go into the music. Unreal drumming Larnell!
dang...such tasty playing. Larnell is the man
So. Sick. Favourite takes are 1 and 4. So incredibly fun to watch.
Me too ! Thanks !
Take 4 was really like "k now I'm kinda bored I'll spicy it up a little hehe"
Same

Agreed !
Those high hat rolls at the start of take 3 make me want to throw my drums out
@4:44 is Larnell the best drummer alive?!
I might not be the one to say that, but yes :)
Truly a musician where the instrument is an extension of himself.
the "mistakes", which i dont even think i caught any beside one on take 2 where the big "ahhhh" appeared on the screen, is just the robot inside of him attempting to blend in with the rest of humanity as to not raise any suspicion
Probably ! ;)
The last Take was unbelievable🙌🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Indeed ! That is called MASTERY :)
The definition to provide drums with musicality. 👌🏼
This is exactly what you're getting with Mr. Lewis !
This is just flipping amazing! If you listen to this with your eyes closed, you wouldn't even notice the flub. Just smooth with it. An absolute pro!

Divine drumming...

That last take was SAUCY

just an absolute beast
endless stream of ideas, unbelievable

Proof that you can also hit the drums hard in jazz. The tuning is also quite on the rock side
That's why it's called Jazz Fusion ;)
Espectacular, muy flamenco.
