StarCraft Is Life: A 20th Anniversary Celebration

  • We brought together players from all around the world to talk to about their experiences with StarCraft-from community diehards who helped establish the scene, to those who represent its next generation. For some of them, StarCraft is as much a vehicle for self-improvement as it is a game. For others, it’s been a means to forge lifelong friendships and establish meaningful bonds in their communities.
We here at Blizzard are right there with them.

I've been playing games since I was about 7 years old... and still, no game on earth ever gets me as emotional as Starcraft does. It was the first game I ever fell in love with and it still to this day remains my favorite game of all time with nothing coming close.

"It's a game that has continued from one generation to another."
I'm 17 and it's my uncle who showed it to me when I was young and since that moment, many years ago, it always was my favorite video game. I played hundreds of hours at this, I dedicated my first sleepless night to StarCraft, I drew scenes and characters, I cried for the community and the powerful campains...
This is just a unique game in all it's aspects and I believe it to be so much underrated (at least in my region) and overlooked at...
    En taro StarCraft.
Sincerely, thank you for all you've given us for the past 20 years.

I first played Starcraft when I was 8 years old, it introduced me to the RTS genre; but more than that, it made me a gamer. A Blizzard gamer.

yeeee. I was 9 when my older brother bought starcraft in 1998. I remember playing it seriously until like 2002 when I got into other things. Then I picked it up again like 6 years ago. Best decision I ever made to play again.

Here's a couple of tidbits for me at least:
    - Raynor was influential to me in that he was one of the first and most memorable "down-to-earth" heroes I saw as a kid.
    - Raynor and Kerrigan's relationship was one of the first romantic relationships I saw played subtly (in SC1) as a kid, as opposed to being overt. That made her transformation and their hostility later all the more tragic for 10-12 year old me.
    - Fenix' death. Man, don't think I'll ever get over that.
    - The cinematics blew my mind back then. They were less directly connected to the story back then, being more like their own little vignettes, and I loved how creepy and dark and somewhat mysterious they were. I mean, the first time you see the wastelands of mar sara, and you wonder what the zerg are... Imagine feeling that sense of wonder again.
    - Starcraft 2 made me the most hyped and giggly I've ever been since maybe I learnt that they were making Lord of the Rings movies or something. Wings of Liberty remains the only game I've ever bought the special collector's edition for.
    - I still hum the original terran soundtrack every now and then. Talk about getting pumped!

I grew up putting old computers together with my friend so all my friends and family could play at the same time. I may not have been so lucky to work for Blizzard in SC2 specifically, BUT I do work with computers now and I would attribute a lot of that to my passion for SC growing up.

    Starcraft is life
    Its everything to me
It's the reason why I love history strategy games and basically everything that inspired me to do these things I do in real life because I found them inside the Game
And the fact that my entire family used to play it was perfect
I say was because life just caught us busy
But never me I always give time to starcraft ever since I was 2 years old when my father introduced me to the Game I love

Nice video, I'm 43 now, been playing it till I was 23. Many of my friends who played it back then don't play it any more, and even looking at me through time like I'm immature. Though some people judge starcraft and describe it as dead game, that's wrong. They compare it with more popular, oversaturated games and that doesn't make sense. Many gamers don't play starcraft 'cause it's hard to start learning it, and they choose some other games, but we have really big comunity around starcraft alone to call it dead, and 27k views of this video proves it. That's enough for me, and I believe that we don't need million ppl to prove a point. Starcraft will really live like no other game, and I'm really proud to be a passenger on this big ship and to really experience the feeling we all feel playing this game.

Back in 99-2000 my friends and I would often drag our massive PC's to each others apartment, hook them up, drink beer, and play Starcraft. This was before broadband internet. I lost many games but it didn't matter.
Today I work in a technical crisis manager role for a large web site and play SC2 in my spare time - I think it helps me stay sharp and teaches you to react quickly while doing many things at once. Perfect!

Starcraft is very fun, its hard and the community is very good. Found it in 2013, my pc could not run it so i plaied brood war and enjoied it, then got my 1st build and could play sc2 all day. Made good friends there, older people, younger people. I was kicked out of house and i didnt have a place to stay, but i had work and i bathed and ate at work (mcdonalds) i had been paied just before so i had money, i used to play on the workplace pc, could only run on low tho xD I also bought the SC2 legacy of the void expansion for a friend and would play it on his acount, and then when i rented a place and got internet bought it again for me xD I could have staied with family but i refused. Also in 2014 i just staied at home all year, made good german friends, would play with them everyday, good people.

Although released in 1998, real-time strategy StarCraft Broodwar is still very popular in South Korea. The balanced interactions of the three races - terranes (equilibrium of bio & tech), protoss (psi technology) and zerg (bioorganics) or (according to Freud - «I», «Super-Ego» and «It»), give the game the properties of an e-sports discipline. This is «21st century chess»!

a bit disappointed.... i was waiting for interviews from the developers.... and especially the older ones if they still work in blizzard. not a bunch if esport guys. and starcraft succeed as an esport because of its amazing driver storyline. never forget that.
