This is a stunning find on UA-cam. John Scott is one of the finest organists in the world today. Winner of the J.S. Bach International Organ Competition in Leipzig in 1984, if you want to see a really definitive Bach performance on the organ, you need look no further than this. It is as if John Scott is a reincarnation of Bach himself.
I take piano lessons from Mr. John Scott's sister, Mrs. Helen Church, who recommended I see this video because I would like to begin as soon as possible to take step organ lessons and Mr. Scott has shown me through this video that organ players can make very beautiful music (putting my piano skills to shame). I would like to see more videos of Mr. John whenever they are released. God bless you and your musical talent.
That was truly awesome! I did not hear one dropped note and the phrasing was impeccable. I have heard this piece a thousand times, but John's performance made this piece new again. Bravo!
Thank you, Mr. Scott! I built the windchests in this organ, and it is wonderful to hear such great music and great playing flowing through them! (And thanks to you too, Joe!)
I attended Evensong in a cathedral on a cold Sunday afternoon last January and this piece was played before the service began. Sitting there in that huge, nearly empty, cold cathedral with the organist playing this prelude and fugue gave one of the most real feelings of the presance of God that I ever experienced!! Calm, remote but yet near and dynamic!
Ahhh... the late and GREAT John Scott. Who can replace him? This performance of the prelude and fugue shows him at his best, lively, thoughtful and with a superb sense of rhythm. The pedal board playing is superlative. This organ has a marvelous quality of sound, particularly the pedal board. any thanks to the uploader.
John Scott makes this music look easy, the genius of Bach is that this music is incredibly complicated. He also plays it on a tracker organ (as it should) so it adds a whole new element of how he interacts with the instrument and shapes the music in a very special way. You just can't get it any other way. What talent!
This is what it's all about. You can't get better playing of Bach than this. Clear part leading and a completely non-robotic performance. John Scott is the man! I nearly studied with him at the Royal Academy of Music in London but sadly he stopped teaching there the year I arrived. A sad loss to the UK but a great gain to the US..
I am very saddened to hear of his death this week. I was visiting London in 1991 and went to St Paul's at 11am on Sunday 21 July. The City of London Sinfonia with the full choir performed the "Nelson' Mass by Haydn and other epic pieces, all controlled by John Scott. I have never forgotten how emotional that experience was for me, and I understand how his colleagues around the world will be feeling. RIP John Scott
I am very saddened to hear about John Scott's passing. He was truly in a league by himself not only as organist but in his work as a choral musician. The world has lost a great individual.
John- i had the pleasure of meeting you in 1990 at St. Paul's-while on an RSCM course at Addington- it seems that like fine wines - your playing just gets better and better w/ age- well done!!
I've watched this video 6 times and each time I discover something new. John's playing is beautiful to watch as well as listen to. I hope to see future videos of this wonderful musician.
This is just awesome. Take that, those folks out there who don't want agogic accents or reeds in Bach. The master shows us here why both of them are good things!
This is absolutely one of the best recordings of this piece I've ever heard! He plays it very good at a really nice tempo and the organ sounds amazing! Thanks!
I'm looking at the date of the recording. The choirboys are at Camp Incarnation in Connecticut, USA, enjoying 2 weeks of nature, fun and boyhood, soon to return to NYC for May31 Sunday services. Graduation of the 8th grade class will occur on Saturday, June 6th with recitals by the 8th graders who are leaving the choir (my son included), followed by their last service under his tutilage on June 7. John has perhaps a quiet moment in the church before the boys return that evening for Sunday services the next day on the May 31 and he fills it with these video recordings. His sheer volume of his recorded output and live performance was simply prodigious. My son, James, was privileged to study voice under him at this time. It was interesting watching these 5 years of study and contrasting them to the years of study which I enjoyed as a choir boy under his predecessor, Gerre Hancock, in the early 1970's. John's technique seemed gentle and exacting. The astonishing number of hours of work required to produce a world-class choir of men and boys somehow made tolerable and largely enjoyable to the children. The patience and psychology needed.....impressive. Too soon, too soon.
This really is one of the best performances I have ever heard of this particular piece. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have a great organ by our friends at Taylor and Boody.
So sad to hear of his sudden death yesterday, shocking news. My thoughts are with his wife Lily and family, and with all at St. Thomas's. Rest in peace.
A stunningly fine performance. Faultless technique (oh! that pedalling!) and musicianship. Here's a man who puts his whole being at the service of the music.
wurlitzer895 John Scott is one of the best musician of our time. Listen to this performance of the Bach Fantasy Johann Sebastian Bach Fantasy and Fugue in g minor, BWV 542
I just posted a note to Mr. Scott (Fantasy & Fugue in g minor). Sorry to hear of his passing. He surely will be missed; on UA-cam as well as his many church and public performances! He was quite a good organist....

Glad you enjoyed it. There are 8 videos of John Scott on UA-cam and Vimeo.com/pipeorgan . It was such a tremendous honor to have worked with him.
Thank you, John Scott, for all the music you made for us, and for inspiring us with your flawless musical integrity.
Requiescat in pace.
Time to renew our caring and respect for a great person playing a great composers inspired work, again.
How absolutely lovely to hear the Prelude slowed down in this way, so as to taste and chew over every twist and turn thereof.
I have Heard John play the Organ in St Pauls Cathedral all I will say is wow when he pulled out the trumpet stop it send shivers down my spine

Huge fan of John Scott. Still cant believe he has passed

This man rocks, a musician who doesn't get in the way, but is the perfect conduit. 10/10.

Beautiful and elegant playing. RIP...
Requiescat in pace John Scott. Such a sad loss. He died suddenly Wed., August 12, 2015.

John Scott was certainly that and much more.

Marvelous instrument and matchless performance. I have not previously heard so emotional a performance of this usually straight-laced work.
This is absolutely one of the best recordings of this piece I've ever heard! He plays it very good at a really nice tempo and the organ sounds amazing! Thanks!
The Taylor and Boody is such a fine instrument! I love the "vocale" quality of the voicing.....it makes the heart ache to hear such beauty.

pipe-organ Thanks for the reply. Will do as you suggest. The g minor fugue is a pig to play! Peter
Such wonderful playing, sensitive, musical, and brilliant technique. What an artist you are!
Stunning! Unparalleled rendition, especially of the Fugue.
Great piece, and well played. Especially appreciate the way the introduction to the prelude is played.
Amazing !!! Thank you John Scott
that is a wonderful performance of the Fugue in A Minor. I love that piece.
Rest in Peace, faithful servant.
One of a kind. Rest in peace.
Amazing! Is there no limit to the human capability? Between Bach and Scott, wow! Sorry to hear that he is no longer with us.
fugue is my life for ever the greatest music ever created
Oh! Wonderful mixture during Fuga!
... flawless execution!
A beautiful sounding organ with Baroque ERA voicing in a building with live acoustics and a good recording technique.
The fugue was one of my favorite interpretations.
Quanto bravo!

"Good" is the understatement of the last five centuries ! In this performance we hear Bach "reincarnated" in a matchless performance !
This is a NICE pipe organ.......
BEST tempo!
Brilliant!!!
he's make a very clear and distinct's toucher, it's sometimes a little controversial, but i take off my hat it's very convincing
What's not to like...?
St. Thomas mechanical organ. If the organs are not rumbling the place, the subway trains will.
bellissimo!
