What if I feel too anxious about not sleeping, to fall asleep?

  • If you're sleep deprived, fear of not sleeping enough can be a serious barrier to sleep.
    Rather than trying to ignore these troublesome thoughts, a more effective long term strategy is to face them head on. Be curious.. what are the thoughts that are keeping you awake? How do they make you feel?
    Where do they come from? Is there any evidence that they are true, or is there alternative way of looking at the situation?
    A journal or daily diary can be a great way to examine these thoughts, and see what recurs over time.
    Focus on the things that you can control - such as other measures you can take to protect your health. Yes, sleep is important, but it's only a very small part of the picture of your health and wellbeing.
