Do you know if the two f.p. sections seat back together and what do you do with those connections between the pump and top piece? If the two don't seal together does the wiring and hose just remain exposed, i.e. fumes and fuel? Stuck with this.

This brings back flashbacks to the time I tried this in my A4 (B5). I was replacing the pump component of this assembly and had such a hard time getting it back together properly -- the worst part being making the outer plastic shell go down into its slot properly. I had to get the angle juuuust right when I slid it back down there and do a twisting motion. They could really have made the hole a lot bigger :P

Hey man, great tips! I've got a B4 Audi A4 with the 1.8l. Fuel pump is making quite the whining noise so I decided to swap it out with one from the salvage yard. Strangely, it's making the same whining noise. What're the odds that the fuel pump is also bad vs something else causing the pump to make that whining noise? PS... I'm in SLC and my neighbor is one of the main guys at Integrated Engineering... he said you guys have done some stuff together and you're a pretty stand out dude.

Thanks for the vid! May be several years later but before I replaced my Fuel Pump in my Mk3 2.Slow Jetta I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. A bit of a pain to install a new one but it was pretty easy overall and the pump included everything for 50$. I am satisfied. Hopefully I don't have an electrical issue since I jumped the gun on the fuel pump XD

    • @Snowdog216
      @Snowdog216 3 роки тому

Do a search on removing Audi D clip. You have to push the plug the opposite way of taking it out, push the tab and pull up. Many times they are stuck and the plastic tab may break off. If that happens you will need a pick tool to gently insert into the tab. You have to be careful and not break the plug if you do that then you will need to do a search on re-pinning an audi D plug, buy a pin tool and the replacement plug. Note if the cover over the little retaining nub is broken off that will not matter as long as there is part of the plug that goes over the nub.

  • @MrAlembicMan

It's only easy if you can get that electrical connector off!!! I finally got it off by using a very sharp test probe pushing down on it and prying the connector below the tab thing after most of it had broken off. What a nightmare, it was 32 degrees and the plastic was rigid, I could have hit it with the hair dryer first perhaps. Yet it was not budging.
Also you have to line that arrow up like some other guy said. You made getting that connector off look way, way too easy... mine was "nightmare on elm street" and I was cussing my head off. Not your fault, I had the new pump to look at so I knew where to pry at. Don't try and replace just the pump, make sure you replace the entire unit... I got mine for about 200$ at Cascade German Auto parts in Gresham Oregon. Highly recommend. Onto the next nightmare repair job, I hate working on cars but I hate paying mechanics even more! Lol...

    • @MrAlembicMan

Just test drove and it runs good, still getting the air out of the system as I had changed the fuel filter as well. You can really tell on a diesel TDI when you start it if your fuel pump is working. (*Lift pump) Pretty sure it only works when you start the car, all it does is pressurize the system, after that it runs on fuel vacuum. It's not like a gas vehicle, the TDI's are different. Just posting so other's know my repair was successful! The connector still clicked on, but next time it's getting replaced.

It would be advisable to at least vacuum the soot off the top of the unit just after you remove the securing ring. I don't know exactly how much soot you dropped into the tank when you turned the upper cover sideways but I'm pretty sure you dropped in some dirt in the tank.

Can anyone tell me the trick to removing the black plug of the wire harness of the car that connects to the white plug on the lid of the pump??
I know it should be simple and I look stupid for asking this question, but for the frikin life of me I can not get mine to disconnect!
I just broke the small black tab at the top off and afraid I will break something else w/o knowing how this thing should come off.
I tried pressing down on the black tab and pull but i had to press so hard it broke then still won't frikin budge!
I do not see anything to press in to release but I know it has be there!
Please let me know asap if anyone can help me here.

I share your pain. I had the same problem. I broke my black tab also. I got mad & ended up breaking the whole thing, thinking I would just go to Pull-a Part and get another wiring plug. After tearing off the complete black tab, I saw the white locking tab of the fuel pump housing that was holding the wiring harness on. It seems you need to push down on the entire wiring harness while pushing in on the black tab. If you watch video, HumbleMechanic pulls the harness away from the side with the black tab, while pushing in on black tab. I got a scribe with a 90 degree tip between the harness and the housing enough to remove the harness. I do not plan to replace wiring harness as the locking tab on the housing is in good condition.

This is actually pretty easy, a lot of cars you have to drain and drop the tank. VW gives you access from the top and a nice little access hatch from the passenger compartment so you can get at it no matter how full the tank is. (Because fuel pumps only ever die on a full tank of gas!)

I don't know this much about cars so I do apologise if what I'm about to say makes no sense - I do learn this stuff quick though.
So I have a 2011 VW Passat (UK), my fuel gauge reads empty when full and full when empty. To me it seems like a positive (+) is connected to a negative (-) and vise versa. What really makes me think I might be right was from 4:19 of this video. He mentions the *fuel level sender cable* - does the orientation matter, will flipping it over (i.e. + to -) cause my fuel gauge to read the other way??
Would appreciate it if anyone with the right knowledge about this can help me answer my question.

I have sissy desk-job hands. I always cringe when I watch mechanic videos and they use their hands as hammers. I gotta hit the hand gym.

Hey charles thanks for this video, I took the sender out of my tdi Passat today it was full of gunk. Very easy job to clean it, keep making videos. Check out my channel for corrado videos and the irish ☘️ vintage car scene

Shouldn't you be using a screwdriver with a plastic tip, instead of metal one?

+borm91 I technically should be using the OEM claw tool from VW. But most of us(including me) don't own that tool. Especially at the salvage yard, you gotta make do.
I've done it this way a number of times with no issue, but you do need to be careful not to damage the ring

The ring on my MK3 Jetta is stuck!! I have hammered it and actually broke a couple of those tabs, and it still won't budge!! Any clue how to remove it? FYI, i tried loosening that ring first without disconnecting the hoses. Does that make a difference? Thanks for ur video and help
