WIth all the campsites closed due to phase 2 "lockdown", the time has come to convert my new beetle into a micro-camper. With the back seat down and the front passenger seat out I can build a storage box level with the trunk and at 5'8" will be able to sleep inside the beetle. A little stealth night time parking and problem solved. BONUS: Not quite as vulnerable to bears and bandits as when sleeping in a tent, plus, don't have to hassle with putting up a tent. Win-Win. Well with the seat out, new leathers installed, big job, the car looks like new. Your channel is tops. But I think you will like what I do have. 2003, passat wagen, silver, all options. And get this. A mint running W8. 275,000, letter perfect. Goes like a bat out of he'll. Fun car to drive. Replaced the entire front set of control arms, German brakes, discs, new headlamp assemblies with xenon / LED . This car just about outperforms, out handles, outshines just about anything out there. Some say this was the best Passat ever made. Not sure about that, but it doesn't owe me a dime. And a unique 8 cyl sound all to its own. Das auto!
I had replacement beetle seats I got from a wrecking yard sitting in my garage. That was my project for today...to put them in. I forgot how I took the salvage ones out so checked this video and it was perfect. Saved a lot of time not reinventing the wheel...thanks!
Good camera angles, slow and detailed ELSAWIN-like explanation with VW mechanic's own experience included, not only for removal but for saving the integrity of all pieces involved too. Thanks Charles!
Great video, I managed to change the front seat in my Seat Leon MK1 in minutes. I never dreamed it would be that easy. Many thanks to the HumbleMechanic.
thanks for that one. I wanted to change the seats between my jettas and it look like more work than you show, I was tempted to unbolt the tracks and the whole mechanism, that is a no brainer thanks
I don't know if the trim screws are all philips heads in the US, but at least in Canada, there are a mix of philips head and T20 torx head screws for the inner/outer rail trim (It's the same size torx as the majority of the interior trim screws, so anyone working on a VW should have that handy). If you're after the trim on the rails, using heavy tape (duct tape) to yank up the screw covers can save you from marring the cover/trim around the hole. Also, a minor variation: Power seats from the same B5/B5.5 Passat and Mk4 Golf/Jetta/Beetles use two 13mm bolts instead of the two 13mm nuts all the manual seats use. Make sure you take those bolts with you if you're doing a power seat conversion!
+chrstphrr good call on the trim screws some are t20 torx. I worry a little on the duct tape. That soft touch on the old ones is sensitive and may come off. But it could work well. I've never done it. Lol Also VERY good call on taking the hardware!
Ah, I haven't come across the seat rail covers covered in soft-touch. If anyone suspects the rails they're working with *ARE* soft touch, using the tip of a blade, like what Charles showed would be best.
Done it today to change foam. 2 minutes job. Little advice: take the headrest off and take the seat out of the car via the rear door, much easier. Thanks humblemechanic!
Thanks very simple and straight forward. Able to see the seat belt buckle assembly which I need to replace is connected to it so pulling seat out will help in that replacement.
Good on ye. I like to live dangerously 🤣 ye probably be lucky most the time. But it can happen to some cars when battery is still connected. Didn’t happen to me before but happened to my pals 🤣 so I get in the habit of disconnecting the battery to make absolute sure they won’t deploy
Thank you for that. However, I did that in order to find and replace the spring on the sliding release handle. Now my airbag light will not go off 🤔, there was only two wire connectors for my model. Please advice on any technical step I may have skipped? I already tried unplugging the battery and looking for broken wires near the connector and also loose connector connection.
Hi, i have a question about the seat bracket underneath. My seat broke on one side, and rather than welding i want to replace the entire thing from another seat. Can you just unscrew the entire bracket and swap it over?
thanks! so now my 2008 vw convertible new beetle comes out following your tutorial... how do I swap out my driver manual heated seats for a electric adjustable seat? thanks!
Hi charels i have a 2004 vw 🐞 the pass door release does work? The tab that makes the seat collapse forward any thoughts? Is it a broken cable? Most do I need to take the seat out or car I do this from inside? Any help would be amazing like you
I own an upholstery shop and pulled seats outta everything for years and I pull seats out of things all the time and let me tell you something specially Volkswagen's or really any car with an air bag in the seat or with airbags. If you turn the Ignition key on while the seat has been removed from the vehicle it will put a - light on and that - light will stay on until you go pay the dealer about a $150 it might in be 200 or 250 now it's been a lot of years since I've done that but a that does happen
Great video! Do you have any suggestions as far as getting the plastic covers off if they are seemingly melted in place. I have managed to get one and the others just wont come loose.
I am removing the seats out of a 2002 Beetle that has heated seats and the air bag. I don't want to break any of the tabs and really wish there was a detailed video on how to use the clasps on the electrical components so to not break them. Any ideas??
I saw a video saying that it is a good idea to disconnect the battery before taking the seat out to prevent the airbags from inflating. Do you think that it’s advisable or not really? Does anyone know please?
It is best practice, but I've disconnected and reconnected my seat's airbag connector without issues. I guess its a "rather do it to be safe" type of scenario.
Ahh very needed tutorial, I will use part of it so I can just lift front seats because probably Airbag connector stopped working since it started showing Airbag light on dashboard.
It's probably a short in the seat belt female buckle. You need to get another one, about 90 bux, and replace it. It's the one on the right side of the driver's seat.
After spending 45 minutes without success, dude does it in 2. Don't know if I should be happier or ticked off. I'm Brain dead. Thanks for the help.. Smile
Charles Thank you nice video have a Question my daughter bought her 1st car a 2008 VW EOS unfornately Drivers side power seat doent move forward or back wards the seat is blocking the 2 rear 10mm bolts any help would be greatly appreciated.
Question about heated seats on this model - Whats the difference between the switches on the dash? Left switch has a different model number than right.
Hi Charles! Great video! The problem for me is that the driver's seat was stuck today when my wife was taking the car to get to work. In a position she couldn't drive in... Luckily I had the possibility to drive her to work, the seat was in my position. We have a VW Polo 2015. The adjustment lever pushes down on the metal tabs, but the seat won't move, neither forward of back. Something has apparently jammed it. Any suggestions for me to fix this are appreciated.
I used WD40 sprayed on the movable parts when my seat refused to latch, making it impossible to hold the seat in place. It may take a while to loosen up the stuck parts that were not engaging the track. It has not given me any more trouble.
I was going to unbolt the entire framework from under the car...would have been a trTue Homer Simpson moment....Doahhh! Thanks for tip! Now I'm trying to see how to pull the carpet back from behind the peddles / firewall. I lost the friggin washer on the CMC that I'm installing today. So I'm replacing the CMC. Any tips would be appreciated.

Quick, simple, easy, no fuss, and no unnecessary steps like some other videos.

Excellent detail especially on the nuts/screws being removed. I watched another similar video before this one. THANKS FOR YOUR FINE DETAIL SIR!

Great video, I managed to change the front seat in my Seat Leon MK1 in minutes. I never dreamed it would be that easy. Many thanks to the HumbleMechanic.
Thanks for making my mk 4 journey bearable 😄
I was a little surprised when I found out my car had t45 torx bits instead of 13mm nuts, but the video was very helpful, thanks a lot.
Mine too. And I'm glad it does, torx are a superior screw head, way harder to strip than philips.
I like how you explain things. Seems very simple.
Great job as always Charles, and thanks for keeping it straight to the point, Dave.

Superb video, VERY well explained! Thank you good sir.
Great style and to the point.
don't forget to mention disconnect the battery before disconnecting wires or the airbag will go boom!
Ben Crosbie it don’t go boom I disconnected my seat dozen of times without the battery being disconnected

Ben Crosbie Thanks

T45 bit instead 13mm bolts for my 1999 Beetle. Thanks for the video!

Like many other examples of German engineering, easy if you know the trick, impossible if you don't.
Thank you. it's not covered in my manual where the bolts are. Great explanation.
Do you have a video doing this on a Golf R MK7 ? As I'd like to take mine out safely, so can wash the carpets.

Should've done one with power seats to show how that's done especially if hooking up the battery cables doesn't work.

Very helpful
I came to the consensus of purchasing a driver’s seat from a salvage Tiguan rather than purchasing a seat-heating element and removing the leatherette. Mine failed on the bottom section of the seat, so I figured rather than blowing $1,000 to have the part replaced, I’d just get a new seat for a quarter or a third of the price out of a salvage Tiguan.
I have a power driver’s seat with seat heating. I know I have to disconnect the battery so I don’t cause an airbag/SRS malfunction light to come on. But is it any different than shown in this video?

Hey, I just bought Jetta seats for a custom interior I'm doing. Is there any place I can find the seat rails (tracks) so I can mount them?

It’s an assist spring. You can use the seat no prob with out it

No, you will not have plugs available for the electric motors on the GL
