Isla Instruments Caladan Overview/Follow up

- Following on from yesterday's brilliant long form show with the good guys over at @ProSynthNetwork , I wanted to follow up with a shorter, more concise overview of what the synth is all about.
Hopefully this answers many of the questions I have been fielding over the past 24hrs.
The coupon code 'prosynth' has been extended until Monday. My apologies for not considering people not having the time to watch the stream and place their order in time. That said, the code WILL expire on Monday morning.
to place your pre-order for the Caladan synthesizer, and see the specs, audio demos etc, head over to www.islainstru...
Thanks to all who have already placed an order, it's you guys that are enabling us to put this into production.
We're extremely grateful.
Big Love
Brad
I’m hoping to have 8 stereo outputs. That would definitely make this thing untouchable. Not even Korg/Roland/Yamaha would dare to be that generous!
This what mixers are for ...
Will this have sample playback capabilities? It'd be cool to have something akin to a S2400 card.
anyone having problems with paypal pre-ordering the caladan?
AMAZING! Will you offer a white option to match the white s2400? Thank You
What a bugger to miss the presale ! I'll be hunting one of these 2nd hand if anyone wants to move one
After buying this i’ll likely never need any other synths in my setup. Thank you 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Any Jungle in, guy?
I got the Tarzan & Jane of jungle just swung in on the vine, bruv.
Please consider usb audio to host as a vst or clap plugin rather than class compliant / asio.
Windows users cannot aggregate interfaces and 99% are already using their one and only before we try to integrate Caladan.
Great communication, great technology and great presentation as usual.
If the card options really take off, I can see people buying second caladans. Maybe an official storage case for unplugged cards will be in order for those rocking a single device.
What about a compromise of 2 stereo unbalanced and 6 mono balanced individual outs? I can see this synth having the ability to "swirl" oscillators about the stereo field. With the stereo sub L/R pair and two more stereo outs, that should be plenty to preserve 3 complex stereo parts at the same time. (Although I see this strictly as a recording synth, not a live jamming synth.) Just my 2 cents of course. 🙂
It's definitely a great-looking product! Thanks for all the information on it! I've been waiting for this moment, finally! :D which brings me to the rub...
I was so looking forward to this, and now I'm a little disappointed I have to buy it with 2 or 4 voice cards I don't want; I sold my Parva, after-all >_> Not that it's a bad sounding synth at all, I just don't want the cards or to have to deal with selling them. Judging by the price difference between 2 or 4, it's $200 I could put towards cards I do want. I guess I have until Monday to think about it.
Pre-Ordered w/4 cards. This will live permanently next to the s2400. Super stoked about this product. I might have to sell off my other synths. This is a super smart product that allows in essence to have many different synths in the same unit. Isla y’all did it again!!!!
I'm curious if there is any unique link beteween this and the S2400, besides basic midi mapping. It would be cool to sequence it by an S2400. For example, if the knobs and sliders on the S2400 could be auto-linked to the parameters on the Caladan, it could easily be integrated for sequencing on the 2400.
"besides basic midi mapping" do realize just how expressive MIDI is? There is no reason to reinvent the wheel when MIDI CC works. It is just a matter Isla Instruments implementing more MIDI CC features for the S2400 and then ANY synth or controller that sends MIDI CC can do what you are wanting.
@@HazeAnderson What I meant was more just a more seamless integration. So, instead of sequencing midi cc values, it would be cool if you could actually see the parameter names from Caladan on an s-2400. I don't have an 2400. I really want one. I midi sequence synths with an Octatrack all the time. But, I find it to be messy sometimes, remembering what cc values are assigned to what. So, I was just thinking, since the 2 devices are from the same company. they could maybe implement some sort of streamlined automap, where you could access the parameters with their names, directly on the 2400, without having to manually assign everything. So, you could pretty much have direct access to the Caladan engines in the s2400 midi tracks. Either way, Caladan looks amazing, and I'm hoping to get both devices in the near future.
@@AndreiOlenev oh I see what you are saying now and yes that is very handy. The Squarp Pyramid does this, but it only lets you store up to 16 synths. But still, being able to see the NAME of what the CC does for that synth is super helpful with keeping the creative process flowing. The catch is that I have to do all the naming myself but it's just a matter of making some text files and putting them on the USB card for the Pyramid. So I can actually make a config file for the S2400 and see the names I assign for the CC values and not have to keep looking up what they are in the implementation chart. I never thought to "bug" Brad and co. about this ... asking them if they could do something similar but check this out --- ALL OF THIS is supposed to be for free when MIDI 2.0 is implemented. I just really hope the Caladan will be able to support MIDI 2.0 and THEN ... then MIDI 2.0 will do the magic for us. :) Cheers!
I am looking to purchase room the UK but is it subject to tax and stuff or will it be sent as gift?
I am a believer in Isla . I have been waiting for that s2400 for fiiiiiiiiiiivvvvve months 😅 every day. It feels like Iam 7yrs old on Christmas Eve. I heard they were finally on the boat. Come on, baby .
looks nice so far. any chance of a stereo input so in the future you can chain another device or for use like a lovely rotary knob dj mixer of sorts...?
Less talk more rock
Fine. Just take all my money
Are there plans for some kind of software editor/controler for this?
Yes, and we already have a partner for it! info will follow when we know more.
Hey who's the guy on Reddit that promoted this project, hope he is ok?
not sure who you are talking about?
Nice desk dressing 😉
keeping it real, I dont give a rats about no caladan; am just waiting on the fx cards for the 2400, respectfully
Will the class-compliant audio allow you to stream audio from a computer to the main Caladan outs? So you can process the Caladan further on a computer and then output the final mix out of the unit? This would be extremely useful for a small live performance setup.
Is July 2024 a conservative date of release?
Exactly what. Is. The. Caladen?
Great follow up Brad thanks!
ULTRA HYBRID GENIUS
Still confused about the card pre-order. If I pre-ordered for 4 cards (which I did), am I going to get 4 Parva cards, or will I be able to select between available cards at launch? I thought it was the latter, but am now second guessing that. I probably would not have chosen 4 cards if they are all going to be Parva.
YOu will get a notifiaction from Isla when the Caladan is ready to be shipped. Then you will choose your cards from whats available. They have 2 in development now, and these coming: Analogue Percussion card
Mini Moog card
SH-101 card
String machine card
TB-303 Card
@@backseatsamurai this is not correct ... the pre-order is for the Parva cards.
Cheers B
Im just trying to imagine using it with a s2400.
So I record a live loop of some midi onto a track im making with the s2400 then route the midi out (and / or cv if this does the same thing) to the Caladan which is slaved the s2400 tempo.
I can then select (this is where im most unsure if im correct) either a single vst / selection of soundfonts and / or card voices to recieve that midi and output audio back to the 2400
Am I right in thinking I could have multiple midi clips sending different notes to the caladan to have say a bassline on an analog card voice, keys from a soundfont and a Parva voice lead all at once?
Finally then processing them with the dsp back on the 2400, throwing away all my other worldy possesions and living as a hermit in a cave only venturing out to recharge my stockpile of solar usb power banks and find signal to backup my masterpieces to the cloud.
Sounds like a plan to me!
So in theory thats a possible way to use the 2 units together?@@ISLAInstruments
own multisamples and SD card inside, too … order placed 😅 please make a 8 voice wavetable synth with analog filter on one card 😊
Like a DW8000 you mean? ;)
@@ISLAInstruments thought about something like the microwave maybe. But the DW8000 sounds also very interesting 😉
Excited.
So the knobs for synth controls are not encoders correct? Kind of a shame IMO to not use encoders on the main interface as you already have led feedback, but I guess this is a preference/cost thing?
Not really any cost difference, it’s still open to changing to encoders, I just remember how people hated the prophet 6 for having encoders so they changed to the PE (pot edition)
@@ISLAInstruments Makes total sense. Some encoders are worse than others. If they were like the encoders faderfox/elektron uses, I'd say encoders in a heartbeat. If they were like the ones on the og beatstep I'd so "no please".
@@ISLAInstruments But I think in the end encoders would make jumping between instrument/pages soooo much more seamless.
@@ISLAInstruments
This wouldn’t be an issue but it would be nice to have quality encoders
@@matthewadunlap until the encoders STOP WORKING! Which they are NOTORIOUS for doing.
Looks like a fantastic synth. Thanks for the information 🙏🏼
never preordered anything so fast
