This reviewer seems to be somewhat jaded when it comes to BMW. I think the car is worth every dollar given the amount of performance and the looks of the SAV. Also, the car out shines the competition by not just a little. Can't wait to get my hands on the New X4 M40i!
Good review, except for the comments re: price and practicality. As a new owner of an X3 M40i, I can't think of any other car i'd rather have at this price point. I actually think it's a relative bargain for the performance you are getting. The engine is very fuel efficient for a car that can do 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. Comparably equipped Macans, Velars, and GLC 43s are considerably more expensive. The SQ5 and Macan's trunk are tiny - the X3 utilizes its compact footprint really efficiently. Great car.
I don’t know what this loon was talking about 16 mpg. I just ordered my M40 yesterday and I’m coming out of an M4 which gets 20-21 mpg on a daily basis. 17 mpg on a bad day! And the price is great! 4.4 seconds to 60! 4.6 at the most!
I agree this thing is a beast. There is a YT of one on the autobahn going 260 km/h or about 160 MPH. That's insane for a SSUV. I wanted one but the MSRP is still too much for be to swallow. Ended up getting a loaded X3 30i for 47K. I got 7K off from rebates and dealer discounts. It had a 54K MSRP. You can really deal on BMW's unlike Mercedes. Still makes 60 MPH is just over 6 seconds. Good enough for my needs. But the design is spot on. Lots of room and the ergonomics are best in class. This is simply best in class SSUV IMO.
What's wrong with spending 65 grand on this car? The mere fact that it's a compact SAV doesn't mean anything in regards to what it should be worth. Ok, so why would one pay 90 or even 100 grand on a Macan? And please don't tell me the Macan is a real sports car. Despite what some people claim about its athleticism, the Macan is still a crossover. And in fact in many ways, the M40i outshines the Macan for a lot less money. I spent 67 grand on my M40i and it's a better car than anything else in this price range.
Agree 100%, the m40i isn't the best looking in its class but is so much more fun to drive than the Audi or the Merc and costs £30k less than the macan turbo s with the spec I wanted and you get more for your money too, wonder why Porsche don't have HUD yet - was a deal breaker for me.
d p , you're right it's not and it's tens of thousands of less. So once again we're back to my original point. Why would you not think a Macan is overpriced and that the M40i is? Have you driven either one of them? The Macan is good by virtue of being a Porsche. It has Porache DNA. But it "ain't no" 911. It's a crossover and as someone who owns the M40i and whose brother owns a Macan GTS I'm here to tell you that both of us are convinced this M40i is a better buy than the Porsche.
Black on cognac with executive package. 0-60 in mid 4’s, amazing seats, comfortable highway/long distance cruiser, ambient lighting to make you feel like your sitting in a lounge, intuitive idrive, plenty of cargo space, tow 4000+lb and don’t have to worry about potholes or gravel....yeah I think it’s a pretty good deal
Autobytel the Audi sq5 you tested before this, is slower, far less sporty(your words) fake exhaust tips and more expensive ($68k) yet you don't blink at the pricing? Why the big spiel here?
No problem with you saying the price is too high, but you'll have to tell us what equils this unit for less. Or what you should be getting for your 65,000. From what I can tell the SQ5 or GLC 43 is the same price spec'd the same. The whole reason for saying the price is just too high should be because there is an obvious alternative to save without giving up anything or getting more for the same dollar figure.
$65k expensive? Try looking at the price of this in other markets. In Australia this will be closer to $120k on the road ! Stop whinging about price. You don’t know how lucky you are !
This car's price is in line with the rest. We have a Q7 and will be downsizing (in size, not quality) to this car, expect to see it in a few weeks. Ours came to 67k and worth every bit. Drove the SQ5 as a comparison and liked this better both in performance and looks.
I really think this is a strong vehicle. I want one but I have discovered many owners having major issues with the drive train vibrating the cabin and steering wheel and no good fix. Lot's of frustration on the forums. That said I don't think it's over-priced for what your getting. You could skip the Executive package and adaptive shocks and come in close to 60k new. There are some pre-owned ones out there now for 50k. It's a BMW... which means BRING MORE WALLET.
@@badimpulses17 dude, i test drove one last month, insane... im looking at a 2018 m40i fully loaded even with the radar driving assistance plus, 21k miles asking 41,900, maybe could offer 39k, is that a good deal?
@@davdez2704 That’s a pretty good deal if it’s indeed fully loaded. Does it have the adaptive suspension? I am looking at a bunch of them (2018) and the fully loaded ones are in the $43-46K range.
After taxes I paid $65. They took mine to as low as they could go cause when BMW wants to sell you a car they will make the numbers work. Even if it means they are making only $500-1000. They also gave me max for my trade in too. That’s a plus. Going from a TRD Pro Tacoma to this..........night and day in quality and performance. And to say the least, the X3 is a true AWD vehicle. Tacoma’s lack of power and quality killed me, I was using it for beach adventures and hunting, I’m 100% sure the X3 will do the same. The last straw that broke the camels back was Toyota’s SHIT QUALITY PAINT JOB, my paint was cracking under the clear coat and not just in one spot but 4 spots all over the truck. Their lack of response and blaming me and other factors was simply too much to handle. No more under powered Toyota for this guy ever again.
You failed to mention that it had top-tier safety picks from the iihs, above basically every SUV in its class, it scored on top. That is worth its weight in gold. If you're going to complain about the price please don't review cars like this. Awesome vehicle, good review, but I have to give a thumbs down because you complained about the price and brought up gas mileage. Get over it.
Turning the volume knob isn't as easy. At least not while driving. You have to reach out, grab something and then turn it vs just making circling motions with your hand.
Once you drive it the price just make sense. There is no other car in this segment that drives like it. You will have to spend 30k more to get GLC 63 or Macan Turbo to outperform this car.
Is the reviewer aware of what cars cost? Is there another similar vehicle with similar performance and features and quality that costs so much less? NO. He places a huge emphasis on the final price....which is par for the course and can be seen as a great deal when compared to the Macan. In many ways, this one short sighted point undermines all other points he makes in this review.
Agreed, the XC60 looks better, is more efficient, and the performance is almost as good as the X3 M40i. BUT, the sound of the X3 M40i is amazing. I still agree that the XC60 T8 is the better choice though.

A 3 series wagon is 60k with a 4 banger, 65k for this top spec M40i is resonable. There is a big difference between the two.
