In my opinion, DK3 has the best SNES graphic. Having released it in 1996/7 at the end of SNES lifespan, it was truly a swan song. Some people might say DKC2 is better than DKC3 in gameplay, but graphic-wise, DKC absolutely more impressive. I can't forget by the time I reach K3, and Rockface Rumble music hits the first area, I was amazed how good the graphic complements the gameplay. Later I realized the background is similar to Chief Thunder's stage in Killer Instinct. No surprise there because both games made by Rare.
Definitely depends if you're on a CRT and original hardware or playing it on a modern device/monitor. That's true of almost all the digitized/rendered graphics games of this era. The Mortal Kombat games look good even on GameGear if you play on original device. They look pretty bad on a high res display. NBA Jam is so much more about the gameplay than graphics but it looks so much better in a real crt arcade cab than emulated on modern console or PC.
I was always impressed by a late SNES game I bought, Metal warriors. The cut scenes were amazing at the time. They really brought you in to the story which had some very epic battle grounds. Give it a try if you haven't. Thanks for the great video

Great video, but might I add, Terranigma was the fifth game in a quintology. We Quintet Fanboys include Actraiser 1 & 2 in there, mainly for the similarities in the graphical presentation and similar tone in story-telling. You can talk about pre-rendering and Mode 7 all you want, but Mega Man and Bass was a Saturn/PS1 game shoved into the SNES which is already proof of the system's power
And don't forget about Street Fighter Alpha 2 - That game make a impressive use of the decompression chip, and almost port 1 to 1 de Arcade version of the game.
What you are seeing is "just" a vector animation, not a real 3D scene. A bit like playing fmv, but generated in realtime and much more storage friendly. The video alludes to this by mentioning the different animation segments which could be stitched together to create different tracks. Look up the Amiga demo "State of the Art" by the group Spaceballs to see the effect in its infancy. Members of the group later joined Funcom and developed this game. The intros for "Another World" and Flashback are other examples of this technique, or check out the more recent Amiga demo "Eon".

Doom differences on snes - 7 stages and the bonus level for each of the 3 episodes compared to 8 and 1 bonus level (levels in game are 1:1 in design with other versions tho not all the shortcut paths are present like the button on the side of the stairs in first stage of episode 1 was removed), episodes were locked behind the diffculty selected even if you beat the episode to move onto the next, diffculty was actually one lower by one compared to other versions - nightmare on snes was actually ultra violent on other versions. As for the remove stages, I remember central processing e1m6 and containment area e2m2 were missing on snes but not sure what the episode 3 one was.
The crazy thing about DKC3 is that I've been playing the Japanese version of DKL3 on the GBC and there is so much that's the same, it's crazy. If you think DKC3 was impressive for the SNES hardware, DKL3 made the GBC almost look like a GBA.
@@wizkaqueefa9003 yes, that's why I imported the Japanese version. It makes a world of difference. And the animations are incredibly smooth, the music is insane. Honestly, probably my favorite DK game. The controls are so good.
It seems that you are simply upscaling your emulator recordings to 1080p? Keep in mind that TVs of the era were displaying their screen (which was slightly covered by the bezel to protect the tube (the area being covered called the overscan)) - in the 4:3 aspect ratio. There are many ways to do that with emulator output; if preserving sharp pixels is your goal I'd upscale a NTSC SNES frame with a nearest-neighbor filter to a width of 6 * 256 = 1536 pixels and a height of 5 * 224 = 1120 pixels (and PAL SNES height to 5 * 239 = 1195), then bilinear-resize the result to 1440x1080. (Of course the _real_ aspect ratio is slightly different... A console can add small borders depending on when exactly it's rendering pixels, and its pixels can be packed almost arbitrarily tight together... It all depends on the frequency that is chosen for the pixel clock.)
I stumbled over Hagane in the nineties just by chance. A friend of mine accepted to exchange his SNES with my humble GameBoy. I was BLOWN AWAY. I replayed it recently through emulation but I must admit that, besides the beautiful graphic, it is one of the toughest games I ever played. Almost impossible to finish.

Would it kill you to credit the music? I've driven myself up the wall trying to remember where the intro music came from (the Tekken 2 intro, if anyone is wondering)
The one thing I will always remember from KI is "C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER" As that was the one thing you had to learn to perfection. If you didn't know to break out of combos, you were as good as dead in that game, as the combos system was insane and all that the pros were doing is rushing from one combo to the next one the moment they figure out that you cannot break out of them.
1994-1996 had the largest leaps in graphic fidelity in SNES titles since 1990 release, the advent of additional DSP/SuperFX1/2 co-processors in the cartridges gave the SNES an additional boost in capability, and closed the gap at the time to Neo-Geo.
Missing Super Double Dragon, Prince of Persia, The Legend Of The Mystical Ninja, TMNT IV Turtles In Time, Metal Warriors, Actraiser, Castlevania: Dracula X, etc.
Mega Man and Bass looks like a PS1 game cause it kind of is. Most of the graphics and sprites were borrowed from Mega Man 8 on the PS1/Saturn. Which makes it all the more impressive.
8:43 You sir have great taste in music! I have not yet played Sea of Stars myself, but when I first heard this track I had it blasting on repeat for a good couple of hours in my headphones
Lots of good info here, but I found it odd that your script wasn't synced up with the footage. It'd be nice if when you were talking about a game's bosses, you showed video of the games bosses and not just B roll lol
Another fantastic video, with sublime picks! Killer Instinct and Doom were such a jaw-dropping visual experiences for the SNES, and really showcased the prowess of the console itself. Terranigma looks awesome, and one that I need to try out!
Terranigma is fantastic, I played it myself thanks to emulation. It's quite an experience. Shame it never got released in North America, and hasn't even seen a re-release anywhere.
Sega fanboys love to bring out that the Snes games used special chips, but in my opinion, the console was designed with that in mind, so it's a sign of a more well thought machine, not the contrary. Even without the cartridges chips though, Snes still beats the Genesis, look at games like Mortal Kombat 2 and 3, how they look a lot better than Genesis version.
Mega Man & Bass I enjoyed, though i only played the GBA version. DBZ Hyper Dimension was also fun! I liked how health worked. I plan to get a copy of the game for myself, as I only played it on emulator. I've played a little of Terrangima and I remember liking it. Slightly off-topic, but I like the song you picked for the Terranigma section. What's it from? DKC3 is the only one of the trilogy that I didn't play as a kid, so I don't have a lot of memories or even time playing it, though I did get it for my collection some time ago. Love me some Donkey Kong!
I actually enjoy the challenge of playing Doom on the SNES. The video footage showed some good examples of how your movement is different in that you do more left-right strafing than circle strafing.
I was with you right up until you said DKC3 was the best in the trilogy, and that it had aged the best.. Maybe my own nostalgia goggles taint my vision here, but DKC2 is definitely the best of the three for me.
Holy cow, Winter Gold is the best 3D effect I've ever seen from the FX-chip games. That legit still looks good! Never even heard of that one, what a cool choice. Also Sabrewulf main 4 life 😎
my friend was trying to discover the last ultra on KI, spinals. no one in the world knew it. He literally figured it out on the SNES game at home weeks befor eothers. Thats how good of a port it was.
Just here to say I'm really surprised you haven't included Stunt Race FX yet. And I've never played Terranigma, but from the footage, I would have put Spike McFang or Secret of Evermore first. But that's probably just down to art style preference. Also Earthworm Jim had some of the smoothest animation ever on the SNES.
Its a shame that us in the U.S. didn't get Terranigma. Good thing for emulation. Also, the DKC games are amazing and hold up very well even to this day.
Donkey Kong Country 3 surely has the best graphics in the trilogy, Rare was much more skilled at 3d modelling at the time the part 3 arrived, look the Spider boss for example, how it's much better modelled against the crude 3d models of DKC1. My problem with DKC3, though, is the art style. The kremlings, new buddy animals, they are so strange. It was like they come from a strange dream. Part 1 and 2 share the same design style, Part 3 has this alien feeling because it departed to much from the characters design from the previous games.
One game I think deserves a mention in one of these videos is Drakkhen. Its a port of a 1989 game from the Commodore Amiga. The original game, while having aged poorly in certain ways and excellently in others, is super ahead of its time. It is one of the first pseudo 3D open world games with a day and night cycle, as well as real time combat with a 4 player party. When you enter dungeons, caves, or combat the game shifts from a first person perspective to a sort of sort of beat em up perspective. The aspect of the game having a day and night cycle within a decently sized open world (which contained 4 different biomes) is, in my opinion, worthy of being on a list of graphically impressive SNES games.
Super Metroid probably one of the only SNES games that I would still consider to be a masterpiece. If you're reading this and haven't yet played it, please do.

When it comes to graphically impressive SNES games, the first one that popped to my mind was oddly enough Kirby's Dreamland 3. Kirby's Fun Pak is the much better game but Kirby Dreamland's 3 has a charming dedication to it's crayon artstyle that works wonderfully for it. 1:03 - The light of the fireplace and the depth to the boxing ring are some pretty great background pieces here. 4:35 - Is... is one Cell's attacks in this game to give birth and assault you with a Cell Jr!? Never expected that to be an attack but at least it gives Cell an original special move. The lighting effect on this game is pretty great. 6:14 - The history behind Winter Gold is really fascinating. Great choice including such trivia in the video. 9:26 - Love the look of this mid-air dash attack. Terranigma looks pretty cool but it's likely yet another SNES RPG that never came out in PAL terri... it came out in PAL territories! Holy heck! That's such a rare thing for the SNES (I think the Mega Drive got more RPGs than the SNES in PAL territories). 14:45 - Hagane here is reminding me a fair bit of Sega' Shinobi series... just with a more mechanical feel. I do love learning about some of these games for the first time through these videos of yours.

Is that video intro the part of tekken2’s intro with nina? What a throw back if that was the case.
That Sea of Stars audio at 8:42 though
You should have included Chrono Trigger. 😊
Hell yeah the messenger soundtrack. One of the best retro-style OSTs of all time!
the song that starts at the megaman & bass section please what is it called
Hagane is $1000. What the actual F...
Game prices are insane these days!
Also Sabrewulf main 4 life 😎
Such an impressive game for its time!
Besides, try looking for the intro in Winter Gold. It's a dancing girl with great effects!!
my friend was trying to discover the last ultra on KI, spinals. no one in the world knew it. He literally figured it out on the SNES game at home weeks befor eothers. Thats how good of a port it was.
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome!
Just here to say I'm really surprised you haven't included Stunt Race FX yet. And I've never played Terranigma, but from the footage, I would have put Spike McFang or Secret of Evermore first. But that's probably just down to art style preference. Also Earthworm Jim had some of the smoothest animation ever on the SNES.
where is the artwork from? thx
Treasure Hunter G is pretty neat as well
Never heard of that one, I'll have to check it out!
@@thatvideogamesshowit's a japan exclusive, but it has fan translated versions
Good shout, I’ll have to include for the next part 🙂
@@thatvideogamesshow I also recommend the sequel, Dragon View.
You forgot Jurassic Park in 3D mode, 3X3 eyes, Batman Returns and Pilot wings
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Here are more snesgames with great graphics:
Srw lord of the elemental
Ganbare goemon 3 & 4
Hamelen no vilion
Solid runner
Traverse
Tin star
Thanks for the suggestions!
Super Metroid probably one of the only SNES games that I would still consider to be a masterpiece. If you're reading this and haven't yet played it, please do.
Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Mario Kart, Super Metroid, Contra 3 and Chrono Trigger are my masterpieces for SNES.

@@redmoonbloodmoon3161 Don’t get me wrong, I do still really like a lot of those and they are really good. Imo a lot of them have been iterated on to the point that I’d rank similar games more highly. Super Metroid is one of the select few that still stands on its own as one of the absolute best in its field.
if you still didn't play "terranigma" , now is the time to enjoy a true piece of art , grafics ans sound are from another dimention .
I always thought Run Saber was a great looking game
I managed to beat Dragon Ball Z Hyper Dimension without using any special moves because I don't understand the mechanics of fighting games.
I played Megaman 8 first and thought it looked amazing. But i was surprised that MM and Bass looked exactly the same. I didnt think the snes could do that especially with MM7 looking the way it did (which also was pretty good)
Auwww man. You played budokai music...
Now I gotta blitz through the game again
Anyone else play DOOM online on the SNES back in the day? Peak gaming right there xD
I would have added Axelay to this list.....by far one of the most underrated shooters ever and was graphically gorgeous.
Included in part 1 🙂
i just learned about hagane. only played the first level so far but it's interesting. also learned about ninja warriors. i saw a video about it on facebook. it looked more like a playstation game. again, played first level, definetly gonna play more
