My great grandfather enlisted on December 27th, 1915 with the 106th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, 'Nova Scotia Rifles' He was only 17 when he enlisted, He survived the war and went on to have 7 children throughout the 20s and 30s. After an incident where he had went to a lavatory, but found a British soldier hiding there and decided to walk away not a minute before that position was hit by artillery, he said he never feared death again. He died of a heart attack on August 29, 1968, 3 days before his 70th birthday

So proud of you for making WWI videos Sophie! Thank you! I watched My Son Jack today, it broke my heart. All about Rudyard Kipling's son Jack serving in WWI
Finally someone is remembering WW1. My Great Great Grandfather, Vaughan, fought for the Essex Yeomanry Cavalry in WW1. He received a shrapnel wound to the head almost killing him on 10/07/1916 in the Somme. He died at a young age of 54. Thanks for the video
21:18 fun fact: it is said that Fuchsl, a dog Hitler adopted when it ran into the German trenches, saved his life, it ran away from where he was sitting, he is said to have ‘heard a voice’ (like a gut feeling that makes you do something) which made him follow it so he got up with his dinner and followed the dog and sat with it, a little later stray shell hit the place he was sitting before he got up and killed every single person there
Hi Sophie!!! I think this Will be a very interesting video... Can you do a video about the second world war… because England had a trascendental prescence… Greetings!
So happy you are here Soph!! Hope you feel better as soon as possible. Rest up, please! Take care of yourself and worry less about everything else. Sometimes we have to stop and think of ourselves and pamper ourselves, so we can be our best ❤ love you so much!
This was such a good idea. I’ve been on a WWI Documentary binge for the past 3 years. It’s so interesting yet horrible. I feel awkward because I’m the only one I know that loves history this much. Thank you so much for this video
Woosh! Sophie, I don't know how are you doing it, but I can relax even when you speak about war :o Btw Poland is celebrating this year not only because of the century of ending the war, but also regaining independence after 123 years of occupation! For us, Poles this year is particularly special. Greetings!
Poland wasnt occupied at the time of WW1 it simply just didn't exist and it hadn't existed for 123 years, what you know as modern Poland at the time was part of three empires The German empire , The Haspburg Austro-Hungarian Empire and, the Tsarist Russian empire. While it was marked on maps as Poland it was just a regional reference point for Europe, like the Balkans or Basqueland.
If anything Poland was Occupied from 1939 (in ww2 after being invaded by Germany and Russia) to 1989, when the Soviet union fell Poland was finally free
Oh, I'm really sorry for my mistake and thank you so much for your comment! Anyway this is special year for us. I exactly know what have happened to Poland, we didn't exist on maps for a long time. I just didn't know how to write it in English, I'm still learning it :P My fault, I could use translator for make sure. Thanks a lot and have a good day!

Benjamin Figgins It was also fueled by anti-Semitism. If there had been no treaty Hitler and his goons would have ether focused on that or they would have found another excuse to start the war.
Patrick Star Hitler was put into office because president Hindenburg thought he could control Hitler and his radicals if he gave him a subpar government position with no real power. It backfired immediately when Hitler used his popularity to give himself real power and rearranged the government for his own needs.
Nibelungentreue if you did study history, you would know that the Treaty of Versailles was not the only reason for Hitlers rise to power. It was a factor but it was not the sole reason.
@@redshirt5126 not so sure, the more overt acts of anti-Semitism were met with anger by Germans (kristallnacht) and Hindenburg complained to Hitler about the treatment of Jewish veterans. Really, it was economic troubles that led to the growth of fascism, because it led to a disillusionment with democracy. Those economic troubles were all down to the Wall Street Crash. Also, fear of communism helped give rise to fascism.
Thank you for this video Sophie, very well done and done with a purpose! And there is never a need for you to apologize about your appearance! As always, I thought you looked lovely :)
Thank you for this. I am a HUGE lover of History and all these facts were so very interesting to hear, there were even a bunch of things I had no idea about. Sophie, you are amazing :)

Agreed brother. The young day and age now haven't got a clue compared to what the war time generation went through i respect all soldiers past and present and honour all of the deceased men and women not just of the great wars but of wars before ww1 right up to the russian-ukraine war going on at the moment.
Not so fun fact: war in europe at the time meant more business for Argentina, as an exporter of primary goods. People *today* look back at those years longingly and would very much like to replicate that country model, which doesn't, didn't, work for a number of reasons, but I'm going off on a tangent here. I hope that you get better, and wish you success with your production!
Couldn't even imagine what it was like in those trentches, trentch foot, disease, sickness, shell shock, freaken pure hell! I've seen videos of some of the soldiers completely loosing their minds!
