Obi Wan is Anikan/Darth Vaders foil. He's supposed to show that Anikan didn't HAVE to do what he did and embrace the dark side. He went through a lot, and watched a lot of people he loved die or loves he sacrificed to stay a jedi (including adi galias padawan), while he was young and even more as he was older and still went on to stay loyal to the light side. Everyone likes to say Anakin suffered, but... He had a decent life as a slave. He lost his mother, yes, but Obi Wan lost his father figure when Qui Gon died. He lost friends and fought a war, but so did Obi Wan, and Obi Wan fought more than one. Obi Wan lost so much in his 37 years (by revenge of the sith) that he felt he was doomed to a life of sadness and sacrifice, but still chose to continue to live a life on the light side.
