When I was younger just getting started in electronics, I had a capacitor blow up in my face. The board I was working on was powered up and I was doing some visual inspection and got ready to start testing and it popped. It blew pieces of paper and electrolytic into my face. I'm surprised I didn't get it in my eye but I will wear eye protection next time I test or solder boards with electrolytics on them
Oh wow! Did it burn?
Caps usually explode when the supply voltage exceeds about 1.5x maximum (when I was a kid I used them as fireworks). Very unusual for the cap to just explode in-circuit (especially in your face) so definitely buy a lotto ticket :D
@@blackhorserepairs It was on a free car equalizer from the 90's someone gave me. It wasn't working and I took it apart and think handling it did it. I might have touched something. I didn't recall it burning my skin though. Had it connected to my dad's battery charger though which explains why it blew up. They put out around 15 to 16 volts with no battery connected to them.

Just to clear up some misinformation. This is a 5 amp H-Bridge type IC. The letters at the end are package type designations. The die or silicon is identical in each device. Unlike consumer electronics, automotive electronics can not be changed without a million notifications and another 2-3 year qualification. This is a Freescale IC. The MC designates it is a standard IC and not custom. Custom IC's start with SC. The 33 is automotive grade. A 34 would indicate industrial. The 887 is the device family. And the letters designate the type of package. There are many packages. A quick search will show them to you. The datasheet for this is readily available.
Thank you so much! Yes I do have a datasheet for it but I had no idea that MC and SC actually means anything :)
the IC608 chip is an SC chip so I guess it's custom and that's probably why I can only get it on eBay from China while MC chips I can get from DigiKey. Good to know indeed. Thank you
@@blackhorserepairs A lot of times if you replace the SC with MC, you can find it on the commercial market. Custom contracts do expire at which time, we can sell them as standard IC's. The 887 is an old device. I qualified it back in 2008. What is the IC608 device markings?

dear , always clean your solder tip using a ball of hanky tissue paper better than anything else
