Nestled on the northern coast of Lesvos, the picturesque village of Petra beckons #travelers with its timeless beauty, #historic allure, and sun-kissed beaches. It has a population of 1200 inhabitants and lies 56 km west of #Mytilene, the islands capital, main #port and local #airport, 6 km south of Molyvos and 59 km from #Sigri port that connects #Lavrion port with the western part of #Lesvos.
Petra means stone in Greek and this quaint village, is really characterized by its iconic towering rock and traditional architecture. The #visitors may experience a perfect blend of cultural exploration and seaside #relaxation.
#Panagia Glykofilousa Church:
Dominating the skyline of Petra, the Panagia Glykofilousa Church, or Church of the Virgin Mary, is perched on top of the famous rock. Accessible by a staircase carved into the rock, the church provides panoramic views of the village and the #Aegean Sea. The interior features beautiful religious artwork, creating a serene atmosphere, while the icon of Virgin Mary is believed to be a miracle worker.
Petra’s #promenade, the main pedestrial street and the square are charming gathering places surrounded by traditional #cafes, #tavernas, and #shops. A perfect spot to relax, enjoy a coffee or a meal, and soak in the village ambiance. During the summer months take place here local events and #festivals. Stroll along the village’s alleys, discovering an impressive core of old stone houses, many with Levantine-style balconies overhanging the streets. An idea way to travel back in time!
The region combines exceptional natural beauties: #olive groves and forests with pines, oak-trees, cypress-trees as well as fruit-bearing trees, traditional stone built mountain villages with running waters, #waterfalls and rich vegetation, but also seaside modern summer holiday settlements with sandy beaches and crystal waters.
The namesake beach of Petra, with its golden sands and crystal-clear waters, is a quintessential spot for sunbathing and swimming. The beach is framed by the imposing rock formation for which the village is named, creating a dramatic backdrop. Anaxos Beach
A short stroll from Petra lies Anaxos Beach, a long stretch of sandy shoreline with a relaxed atmosphere. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available, ensuring a comfortable day by the sea.
Molyvos Beach
While not directly in Petra, Molyvos Beach is worth a visit due to its proximity and the scenic drive along the coast. This pebbly beach offers stunning views of the medieval castle of Molyvos and the charming village itself. The clear waters and tranquil setting make it a delightful spot for a day trip. Explore its fishing port and the labyrinthine streets full of awesome surprises.
Further north we meet Efthalou hot springs and its beach of wild beauty. Many visitors switch between the cold sea water and the hot therapeuting tub, provoking a unique sensation.
#Sykamia is a beautiful settlement in the north part of Lesvos.
25 km south of Petra lies Vatoussa, a picturesque traditional village that worth your attention.
