People here are really missing the point. The Substance isn’t horror in the same sense as Hereditary or Us. It’s got a powerful message about aging actresses that’s likely to resonate with the Academy’s older members more than the younger ones. The message of Us is still unclear, even now, and neither Hereditary nor Us had the kind of thematic depth to make them Oscar contenders. Antony’s wrong if he thinks younger Academy members will be the only ones backing this film. Plus, unlike Hereditary or Us, neither of which was released during awards season or became a cultural phenomenon, The Substance has that impact.
The substance is getting Best Picture, Best Actress, make up and maybe director. The competition isn't that hight and most talked about movies and performances will be in.
I think she's a golden globe shoe-in but... well i certainly hope there's a chance for oscar nom'age (outside of makeup/prosthetic etc which it should win obv)
If Brendan Fraser + _The Whale_ can (undeservedly) win Best Actor + Makeup & Hairstyling 2022, then so can Demi Moore + _The Substance_ this year (way more deservedly).
Margaret Qualley has A GREAT SHOT TO SHOW UP AT THE GLOBES. Zaldana, Jones, Deadwyler, Gomes, Lee Curtis, Qualley. alt at the Globes- Grande, Ronan, Rossellini and Ellis Taylor
Fingers crossed. I saw it 4 times in the theater, and I still loved it. I'm not putting a lot of expectations because of the Academy's shameful treatment towards horror films. I'd love to see the film nominated at the Oscars for: Best Picture Best Director Best Actress - Demi Moore Best Original Screenplay Best Cinematography Best Film Editing Best Makeup Best Sound I'd love to see Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid get nominated. Plus, if they can nominate Best Song (The Substance), that'd be awesome cause it's a banging ass song. Of course, none of it will probably happen, but we'll wait and see.
Mubi being the distributor is a worse hindrance than The Substance being a horror film. The positive side is that Demi Moore is ultra famous and beloved. She is doing dozens of interviews, red carpets, and other campaigning. She might help The Substance get nominated into Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Makeup, and Best Screenplay. Coralie Fargeat has been doing a lot of premiers and interviews, which helps because she seems to be seen as a real new French auteur with a feminist stylish vision and body positive messaging.
BIG MISTAKE HERE. Us and Hereditary were not cultural phenomenons like The Substance is. You know which genre films movies were, and were able to break big with Oscars? Joker, Black Swan, Get Out, Black Panther, Barbie. The Substance is in the same position. Also Demi's praise is mostly for her dramatic parts and the now already iconic mirror scene which doesnt have anything to do with horror but could easily be and is already seen as a PURE DRAMATIC SCENE as it belonged in a drama film. Once the real s**t starts its more Maragret's character that is involved in wtf scenes. The Substance is directed by a woman(points), is a FEMINSIT FILM(more points), ODE TO KUBRICK AND CRONNENBERG (even more points and older voters could flip out on those things) AND IS A SATIRE AND BLACK COMEDY its NOT A MAINSTREAM HORROR THAT ONLY SHOCKS like Hereditary and Us(again more points). Us and Hereditary were NOT SEEN AS PRESTIGE ART FILMS AND WERE NOT AS BELOVED and didnt have any chances outside the leading lady performances that were just pure disturbing horror performances. Substance is full of Hollywood messages, body messages, feminist messages, ode to cinema etc. Its also eye catchy unlike the other two AND HAS WON SCREENPLAY AT CANNES. DEMI MOORES NARRATIVE IS THE NARRATIVE OF THE YEAR ANS SHE IS ALREADY CAMPAIGNING MORE THAN LUPITA AND COLLETTE TOGETHER HAD. Again, Us and Hereditary were not cultural phenomenons like The Substance is. Joker, Black Swan, Get Out, Black Panther, Barbie were. You do the math.
@@ZakYakaveta Like everything everywhere that movie was weird but at it's core it's about a woman trying to fix her relationship with her daughter and husband
Metacritic 78, Rotten Tomatoes 91, Got the best screenplay in Cannes. many UA-cam channels and the internet have raving reviews and analyses about the film and Critics won't go insane for it? They will and the film will be recognised by the academy.
Gascon feels more and more like a shocking snub. Divisive film, supporting character, Zaldana has all the buzz and ARE THEY REALLY READY TO NOMINATE A TRANS WOMAN? I will believe it when i see it.
@@berkcansevgi2714 She deserves much more credit than that. Dramatic, funny, conveying motherhood well and playing a convincing dog. Challenging role. More challenging than that overrated Madison performance for sure.

Bafta nominated Saltburn last year. I dont see any reason why They should over look The Substance
Darling, Helen and I believe Demi Moore will be nominated.
The substance is getting Best Picture, Best Actress, make up and maybe director. The competition isn't that hight and most talked about movies and performances will be in.
Actress is so competitive though.
Jack, you just want Nicole Kidman and Marianne Jean-Baptiste to be nominated. This is why you don't praise Demi.
I just want Demi Moore nominated. That's all I ask

RIGHT! It’s time!
The Substance is a British film and BAFTA will nominate anything British.
It’s French
Nicole Kidman I don’t think is a lock by any means

Academy isn't going to touch this film - the last 20 minutes made sure they wouldn't. It's ok though it should wear it as a badge of honor
I feel the exact same way
It should get nominations for makeup, sound editing, screenplay, and actress.
Fingers crossed. I saw it 4 times in the theater, and I still loved it. I'm not putting a lot of expectations because of the Academy's shameful treatment towards horror films.
I'd love to see the film nominated at the Oscars for:
Best Picture
Best Director
Best Actress - Demi Moore
Best Original Screenplay
Best Cinematography
Best Film Editing
Best Makeup
Best Sound

I see it getting Actress, Screenplay, and Makeup. There’s always a fun possibility of Picture too. Thinking good thoughts

i agree with your assessment - Moore and make-up is the best case scenario
It needs critics groups to go insane for it and even so it's unlikely, it's too weird and out there
exactly. the weird films do better if they have heart and a happy ending, this is far too horror and cynical to get in

Angelina Jolie really? I haven't heard one good review from critics that saw it in festivals
I don’t think it’ll get any techs other than makeup
