I get the impression that sometimes Oscars are given not so much for the individual work but for their contribution as an actor. No question in that Dench deserved an Oscar for something.
I love the “Too late, Too late”! We quote it pretty often. I wish someone would clip this video down to where ...the queen sees the puddle, the men do nothing, and she steps in it saying “too late too late” because it would be a fantastic clip to post sometimes. ❤️😍❤️😍❤️😍
Classical history moment! turned the other way! ( hearty bout of laughter) I'll never forget that part as long as I live! Judi wading through the rain puddle
The timing is about 50 years off - the first settlement in Virginia didn't take place until Jamestown, in 1607, whereas Romeo and Juliet debuted in 1597. It would have taken some decades for the kind of plantations to be established to attract a rich man like the lord. But who cares. It's good storytelling.
While today we imagined she would, Elizabeth has a very strong record of making sure marriage arrangements happen as they should. A lot of marriage approvals have to go through her. In the case of this story, if it were real, she wouldn’t have allowed Viola to stay. I think it came from the fact of her upbringing. You know with father marrying 6 wives and treating marriage like it’s a joke. And also with the rest of Europe hating her as well as some English population, it’s best not to add breaking betrothals to your name lol
But also think about this. Viola's family was well off and she would have been into absolute shame or even cut off that quickly. Elizabeth wasn't only a believer in marriage which is one of the reasons she never married, but she was thinking about Viola's outcome if she had remained in England. Elizabeth was the talk for years about her relationships with men (making itself evident when she used the word "plucked" in one scene with Wessex) and a woman herself never wants to wake up the following day being called strumpet by many court members and other countries. Thus I think that Elizabeth had to do what seemed to be in the right judgement of Viola's well being overall. However, Viola would have more of an opportunity to do what she wanted to do especially in her love of acting. Even though Virginia was owned by England, rules were not the same for women from many miles away.
@@iycrm4583 if Viola lived in the 17th century she may have had a chance since following the Restoration women were finally allowed on the stage as professional actors and be called "Mrs."
"Too late, too late." For 8 minutes of screen time she won an Oscar. That is all.
Lord knows she has done many much better, actual roles that are actually onscreen since.
Judi Dench deserved that Oscar for this role. Amazing. For only 8 minutes, she was brilliant.
'Too Late, Too late' (walks through puddle). Very good movie
Ace Ventura that queen is a boss
LOL queen liz was truly a badass
"How is this to end?"
"As stories must when love's denied. With tears and a journey."
Well said.
Fun fact Gwyneth Paltrow almost played Rose in Titanic, and Kate Winslet almost played Viola in Shakespeare in Love.

Why not just do it yourself? It’s really pretty easy.

Love this movie, totally worthy of the oscar
Joseph Fiennes was hella cute in this 😍😍
This makes me sad "It's time to settle accounts", as a woman you were nothing more than property to a man, it makes me sick!
Gwyneth was actually very good in this film, while Cate Blanchett should have won the oscar, I can see why Gwyneth did
She got it because if Weinstein
Cate Blanchett is my favorite Elizabeth.
Queen Elizebth is me always 😂
I love the writing in this movie.
I love Elizabeth not waiting for a group of men taking off their cloaks for her.
because the first cloak Elizabeth steps on means the owner is highly favored
Queen Elizabeth is amazing!

That and Shakespeare was married to another

the Monarch of England is the Head of the Church of England, as Elizabeth overtly mentions that not even she can undo solemnized marriages
