Good video mate appreciate it, i used the wiring coming off of my old wired thermostat in my hallway which is right next to the router and bridge i had 4 wires in there which went up to the honeywell junction box in the airing cupboard i just rewired the honeywell box as i didnt see any point in having another set of wiring coming out the boiler, i bridged the old thermostat blocks in the honeywell and put the old thermostat wiring to central heating control all working good I've also left my old drayton ip722 timer in place to do the hotwater and can also use the drayton as back up for central heating encase tado servers or internet goes down so we can use manual override.
Thank you very much for this useful video; today I just installed same smart thermostat luckily I do have same combi boiler as you here in the presentation, job done in about 1.5 hrs hassle free! again, many thanks! 🍻🍻🍻
Can't thank you enough for this video Ages researching found nothing then a guy on Tado forum mentioned your name and video It's bang on for me- exact same boiler and Tado gear Appreciate your work
Great installation video. I'm confused though about the comment re. hot water temp control at 2:30. My combi boiler can control the hot water temperature via the existing control panel that is on the boiler. I understand it heats the water on-demand but can it not control the temperature of this water? The Tado should be able to do this as well.
Excellent video, and instructions. I infer from what you said that I can replace my current system which is boiler, thermostat and programmer by replacing the programmer with the receiver but with the old thermostat can I terminate it or do a pass through with the wires?
Great video bud and properly wired as well as it's amazing how many people use the mains in terminals for connecting accessories and not the mains out, the idea being when you switch the boiler off all accessories down stream will be isolated. I will draw your attention to the link that you left in between live and hot water, this is the hot water pre-heat and with the link left in the boiler will cycle every now and then to keep the water hot in the heat exchanger so you get instant hot water when you open the taps, if your at work all day this is a bit pointless and a waste of gas. You could take the spare black wire you have and remove the link in the boiler and connect it to the preheat hot water terminal then in the control unit connect the black to the hot water normally open terminal put a link between the live and the hot water common then you can control the hot water preheat from your app like you do with the heating.
The programming seems complex, what i like about the salus it500 is that the app is very simple to use and to program teh schedule is even simpler. You can also control the heating via a portal on the internet from any laptop.
Hi, thank you for the video. I have very vague ideas about heating but got Tado (as they said you can install it yourself) Well.. my heating set up is different to the one you have demonstrated. It’s a Vaillant plus boiler connected to Dataterm IHC (warmworld) system. How do I get about to replace it with Tado?
Thanks for the video. I have the old Salus thermostat you showed in the middle of the video. Just to clarify; I won’t need to go into the boiler. Just fit the tapo terminal unit as you have. Can someone please clarify, greatly appreciated. Thanks
Thanks for the great explanation! Question: I now have a BOiler with a wired thermostat. If I turned off the power of the house, instead of opening up the whole boiler, could i not cut the thermostat-wire somewere close to the boiler and then connect that wire to the receiver in the way you described it?
Very good video. How ever it should be noted that taking off the boiler case ,breaks the seal to the combustion chamber. The law states you have to be Gas safe registered to do this . It should be added that some boilers allow you to gain access to the electric panel . But not the one in your video
If you're wondering why your heating isn't working.... 24:15 I think you've put the jumper across the Live and Neutral. Should go between L and CH COM.
@@LCWDIY After installing the jumper, you tighten up the MAIN Live and then you tighten up the MAIN Neutral... watch your screwdriver from 24:15. If you've left it this way, I'd suggest to open the cover and check. Just trying to help!

Hi Lee, great video and thank you for making it. I'm looking at Tado to replace my Salus heating control and I notice that you showed a similar wireless boiler control to what I have currently. Is it possible to use the same cabling thats currently in place for the newer tado boiler control? Cheers!
This is great, thanks! One question I do have. As I have an old receiver I can just swap it out with the Tado, however there is an earth wire in the old unit, Im wondering if theres somewhere I could put it (other than just crimp-lugging it to wall inside the unit or inside the unit itself) Cheers!
Hey just to answer my own question. I ended up attaching a Wago connector to the loose earth wire and tucked inside the unit. I had a boiler engineer over the other day that agreed this was fine, but also pointed out theres a couple of Parking slots on the receiver that can be used for this purpose. Be sure to double check this for yourself, Ive just left my Wago there for now, but might swap it at a later date.
The question is, which Tado has not answered satisfactorily, how do you switch the boiler on at the receiver if you need to override the system (perhaps because the thermostat has failed or whatever). There should be a way of bypassing the Tado system and being able to switch the boiler on if need be. Tado support said to use the heating test switch but that only has effect for 2 minutes until test mode is deactivated.
You should just need to press the heat button on the receiver. I have done this before and it stayed on. When it's not in test mode that button should override the heating.
I would suggest to do extra research on products provided by Tado prior to advising people on how to connect this particular product "Wireless Smart Thermostat". There is a "Wired Smart Thermostat", which is what is supposed to be used for when you already have a thermostat setup in the house on the wall and combi boiler, and it excludes the box that connects to the boiler, just thermostat gets replaced and internet hub attached to router, simpler and cheaper product. This product is required if you have hot water control and have water tank in the house, regardless if you have already a thermostat or not available.
I had no heating in the house before installing this boiler and it only came with a mechanical timer so I had no thermostat. I needed all the items that Tado sent to me as I didn't have any thermostats in the house, wired or wireless. If I did already have a thermostat you are correct I would just need the items you mentioned. Tado sent me these items for free so I had no control over what products they sent but they knew that my boiler only had a mechanical timer on it.
Omg. One of most concise comments I've read on this topic. Thank you. I've been trying to understand if I need the whole wireless kit and receiver. But from what you're saying I just need the wired tado thermostat to replace the existing ones that came with my new property which has a combi boiler.
I have a combi boiler in a new building with a thermostat in my hallway downstairs and in the main bedroom upstairs. I'm guessing all I need is a wired starter kit and an additional wired thermostat for upstairs? Is this correct? I get sent the wireless starter kit from ovo energy tried fitting it today and I think it nearly blow up my boiler.
Many thanks for this video which I have watched many times before purchasing the Tado. I followed the Tado instructions initially which included linking the HW even though my boiler is a WB greenstar30i similar to yours in the video. My controller mounted on boiler was a RF comfort which I left in situ. On completion I had problem with the boiler not firing up and I had to revert to original installation and reset the controller. Today I removed the controller and wired up as per your video and all is working fine. When I started the install I selected the RF comfort controller and Tado said that the system wasn’t compatible but I then selected green star boiler and all went well. Can I bring your attention to the video at around 24:48 where you connect the purple link . This should be from L to CH COM but on looking closely your link is across the L and N input - surely this would blow fuses being directly across the mains ? Again many thanks for taking time to upload this video Kind regards Howard
Hi, yes if you use the tvr's you can control it with the app. I have a small office that used to get really warm, with a tvr in there I can now control that room separately with the app.
Great Video. I have an Ideal Vogue Max combi boiler which is about 2 years old and is run via Halo thermostat set up. Would I be able to install just the Tado Smart thermostat valves and Internet bridge to some of my radiators without the need of installing the Tado hub? I have read that as long as my boiler is compatible with Opentherm and 240v, my Ideal boiler will work? Can you please advise? Thanks so much, Ian
My timer is in my airing cupboard upstairs and my boiler is downstairs, do i install mine on my airing cupboard and use the existing wires attached to the timer? Also, do i need to have my thermostat wired into my existing thermostat as mine is currently behind my tv which obviously gives false readings of the temperature. Thanks
I can only add to other comments saying what an excellent video, however.......... I'm not sure why you connected the black common cable, onty to have to remove it and replace with a link. Is it because of what you subsequently found in the boiler wiring? Thanking you in advance.
great video thank you actually showing how to wire this sucker in been pretty stumped... Would you happen to know how to set this up with a 2 Port valve with UFH?
Hi, great video! I need to move my wireless receiver due to rearranging things and the cable will be too short. Do you know the wire size of the 4 core cable please? Many thanks
Tado seems to make a "Wireless Smart Thermostat Starter Kit" but when you look at the contents, it has a "Wireless Temperature Sensor" not a thermostat. It's weird because they also seem to sell both items (thermostat and sensor) separately at different prices. They look the same--are they the same item in fact? Put another way, is the Smart Thermostat you installed here actually a Temperature Sensor?
Can you explain how it knows that you're using a Greenstar boiler? The Worcester Bosch boilers have their own modulation language, and I want to make sure I get a thermostat that can modulate properly by turning the gas down and not just cycling on and off more frequently.
It doesn't know what boiler I have. This unit just tells the heating to turn on or off when thermostat tells it too, it is just like a switch. The boiler has its hot water and heating hot water temperature set on the boiler, there's no settings to turn the gas down on a boiler.
@@LCWDIY Thanks. I'm looking for full modulation for my Greenstar CDi Compact. I have learned that I need to connect the EMS wiring to the Tado for this. The manual does state it can turn the gas down to lower the heat output and run more efficiently once temperature has been reached, to maintain a steady temperature instead of cycling the boiler on and off. Very difficult to find thermostats that can properly talk to Worcester Bosch stuff though.
Hi mate, i do have a logic combi ESP1 35KW boiler and replaced wired thermostats from danfoss ones, but i am confused as do I still need a hub to connect it to boiler please, as when temperature is turned down on thermostats heaters are still firing constantly. Do I still need to install the hub please, in order to communicate thermostat with boiler please.
Hi Mate, great video. Have you had any experience installing this Tado wireless thermostat on a Vaillant EcoFit Pure 835 before? Having a nightmare getting mine on so hoping you've managed to get one to work on there?
I allready have a wired ut2 programmer and a wired thermostat Could I just remove these unsightly items and wire direct to the boiler like the video and use the wireless setup
Great video and very useful - just wondering why you opted not to connect the Tado to the hot water connection to have control over the pre-heat function? From reading the manual in your video, it seems that you can control the pre-head / eco function of your hot water from an external device and the Tado does have the right connections on the hot water relay connections. Surely linking the black wire to the HW LR terminal in the boiler and to the HW NO in the Tado, and then adding a linking wire from live to the relay in the Tado would give you pre-heat control from the TADO also? About to do this myself, so just wondering if I am missing something, and would love to know if I am making an incorrect assumption! Thx
The hot water connections are for a hot water tank/cylinder. The pre heat function is for instant hot water for your taps, which is a waste of gas when you can just wait a few seconds for hot water to come through on eco mode. That's what I believe it says.
I am looking to replace Netatmo wireless relay with Tado receiver. Netatmo only have live and Neutral coming. Can i just connect these to Tado to work? What is purpose of CH in this case?
I installed tado followed every step all the wiring it's right but heter not turn on if I us my old thermostat it's working. It still my old thermostat it connected it's wireless any idea how to deactivate old thurmo start
Did you check or test what happens if you switch off the WiFi? Does it have internal clock to keep the schedule running? Or does the wireless controller doesn't rely on app?
You can press the heating button on the controller to manually turn the heating on if your WiFi is turned off. But you would only lose WiFi in a power cut so the boiler wouldn't work anyway. It doesn't need the internet to work.
Just setup my Tado today, connecting to a Valliant ecoTec plus 637. Tado is responsive, programmer receiving request for heating / water but boiler is not reacting. 😢
@@deanbashford3524 My hot water is on demand and I don't have a hot water tank so I don't use the hot water function of Tado. So because of that I can't experiment with it either.
@@LCWDIY had 2 Sparky's that couldn't do it either 😂😂 sent it back and got the same make as the boiler valliant. its a heating engineer you need to do this sort of work rather than an electrician, they know this stuff better than most sparks and its illegal to remove that boiler combustion cover without gas safe registration!
I’ve been using this little hygrometer for about a week now ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxcr5WULFU6yC9UUKc_cdNJT9jGa6VxO1l and I’m loving it, got it for a ball python so I can track her temps accurately while she battles a RI, so temps and humidity need to be accurate. I love how it’s Bluetooth no matter where I am in the house, I plan on buying more for my other snakes when I can, I highly recommend this! It’s so easy to check it without disturbing her and stressing her out. Only complaint is it’s in military time but otherwise not horrible
So this is ONLY allow Tado to set your thermostat and control your radiators? You have not set it up to allow Tado to turn on your hot water (tank heating)?
In order to open the outer case of most gas boilers (this one included) you must be Competent to carryout "Gas Work" too at minimum. If your watching this and don't know what that means then the answer is you're probably not. Good video otherwise.
The outer door on that boiler is classed as the combustion box cover door. You should be Gas Safe Registered at this point even if it’s your own house.
what a nightmare of a sytem to set up, just spent 3gours trying everything to set it up for the customer, everything was working fine until we connected his phone then it all stopped responding, pairing now no longer works, went theought the instructions 6 times and still nothing, cant be bothered anymore. not impressed!!!
Boilers are condensing or non condensing depending on age and are still combi, systems or boiler only. Combi boilers produce instant hot water others tend to heat a cylinder of stored hit water. So this boiler is a condensing combi boiler.
Really! It's all wired in correctly and working perfectly, if I've not got a clue then how have I got this installed correctly? Tell me what you think is wrong with it.
I think the reason eddtheduck gave is because the potential free relay was wired originally, and then changed to the powered relay once the gentleman making the video actually read the boiler manual (!). I would tend to agree with eddtheduck - it is confusing what was actually going on with the particular wiring arrangement. Otherwise generally good video to see the product and the app. And, most importantly the gentleman was safety conscious, and provided warnings to folk watching this.

Great Video thanks.
Would this all be applicable for my Worcester Greenstar 42CDi Classic Combi boiler?
I'm no expert in this, you would need to ask tado if it is compatible with your boiler. I should think it would be.
Thank you. Very good.
Very good, thanks
Thanks for the video. I noticed you left the HW terminals on the receiver without any wiring, are they not needed to control the hot water?
Hi, no the hot water is supply on demand as it's a combi boiler. If I had hot water storage it would have been connected.
Does the connection change on the wireless receipter for opentherm?
23:25 it looks like you use the link cable from Neutral to Live and not Live to CH COM? Was it just the angle or am i missing something?
Yeah it was just the camera angle making it look wrong.
Great video, I’m a bit confused, Is 25 degree the maximum you can do on Tado please?
Yes 25°c is the max you can put the thermostat on. I only have mine set to 19°c and that's a comfortable heat for our house.
@@LCWDIY thank you.
can i control the water temperature by this equipment? Can i install it myself?
Hi mate, i do have a logic combi ESP1 35KW boiler and replaced wired thermostats from danfoss ones, but i am confused as do I still need a hub to connect it to boiler please, as when temperature is turned down on thermostats heaters are still firing constantly. Do I still need to install the hub please, in order to communicate thermostat with boiler please.
Do you have to disconnect the mechanical timer? What if the Internet goes down? You won't be able to control your boiler.
There is an override button on the control box so you can manually turn it on or off. I disconnected my mechanical timer.
Better to leave the mechanical timer in and switch to 1 on setting.
Hi Mate, great video. Have you had any experience installing this Tado wireless thermostat on a Vaillant EcoFit Pure 835 before? Having a nightmare getting mine on so hoping you've managed to get one to work on there?
Did you get it working I'm having a nightmare too
I allready have a wired ut2 programmer and a wired thermostat
Could I just remove these unsightly items and wire direct to the boiler like the video and use the wireless setup
How would I disconnect the old main room thermometer/thermastate and bridge it off please
Hi, did you had any leaks from your pipes or joints so far?
Hi, I've had no leaks or any problems at all since I installed everything.
is it possible to use 2 of these on 2 boilers each with its own thermostat in the same building?
Hi can this be installed to control heating only and not the boiler? I have a combi boiler
Should I turn off the power to my boiler? The installation guide says to but you don’t?
Never work on electrics without turning the power off. The power to my boiler was certainly off when I did mine.
Do you have to be gas safe registered to do this, since you take the cover off?
Yea you do.
Hi I got a Worcester green start 30i is wiring the receiver is the same as show in the video?
Thank you
Sorry I wouldn't know if you're boiler has the same connections.
Just setup my Tado today, connecting to a Valliant ecoTec plus 637.
Tado is responsive, programmer receiving request for heating / water but boiler is not reacting. 😢
I would check it's wired correctly to the boiler and make sure there's no other timer controller that would stop it responding.
Does the tado do opentherm modulation ?
Sorry I'm not sure. maybe look at the tado website and see if it says anything on there.
What model combi boiler is this please?
Exellent
Thank you
If you wiring in the black to the hot water can you do that remotely ?
I've not looked into that so I wouldn't know. Sorry.
@@LCWDIY maybe an experiment sometime
@@deanbashford3524 My hot water is on demand and I don't have a hot water tank so I don't use the hot water function of Tado. So because of that I can't experiment with it either.
Where's the radiator valve follow up?
Come and get mine working please 🙏 great video but still can't get mine to work 🤦🤷
Sorry I'm not a pro at this just a diy'er. I just followed the instructions but wouldn't have any idea on how to get it working otherwise.
@@LCWDIY had 2 Sparky's that couldn't do it either 😂😂 sent it back and got the same make as the boiler valliant. All I do with this ebus on the boiler but tado said it can do it in instruction manual but clearly it's not working but great video. Made me realise we definitely wasn't doing anything wrong.
That's odd as the control only acts like a switch to the boiler. Glad the video showed you had done it all correctly though.
@@LCWDIY exactly, so maybe faulty but it's easy enough to set up and after watching knowing I got it right. Then I knew something wasn't right. So it's out and vsmart arrives tomorrow which I know from the valliant website it's compatible. 🤞
its a heating engineer you need to do this sort of work rather than an electrician, they know this stuff better than most sparks and its illegal to remove that boiler combustion cover without gas safe registration!
Does the system work only on Wi-Fi or RF?
I think it's just WiFi but not too sure.
@@LCWDIY so if your Wi-Fi goes down does that mean the heating won’t work. I hope there’s a manual override.
Yes there is a manual override. You see me press the heating button when I set it up. That will manually turn the heating on.
No information on whether to connect wires to NC or NO on the panel.
🎉
So this is ONLY allow Tado to set your thermostat and control your radiators? You have not set it up to allow Tado to turn on your hot water (tank heating)?
Yes heating only. I don't have a hot water tank, the hot water comes direct from the boiler.
@@LCWDIY Ah that makes sense. Ta.
@@LCWDIY How do yo change the temperature of the hot water going to your taps?
You change the water temperatures on the boiler
Trv's?
In order to open the outer case of most gas boilers (this one included) you must be Competent to carryout "Gas Work" too at minimum. If your watching this and don't know what that means then the answer is you're probably not. Good video otherwise.
I reckon you've lost 15 jobs because of this video
@@jzilla1234or saved a life with his comment
The outer door on that boiler is classed as the combustion box cover door. You should be Gas Safe Registered at this point even if it’s your own house.
what a nightmare of a sytem to set up, just spent 3gours trying everything to set it up for the customer, everything was working fine until we connected his phone then it all stopped responding, pairing now no longer works, went theought the instructions 6 times and still nothing, cant be bothered anymore. not impressed!!!
Good video. Although 80% of boilers are condensing or standard not combi
Thanks, so used to calling them combi boilers I forget mines condensing.
Boilers are condensing or non condensing depending on age and are still combi, systems or boiler only. Combi boilers produce instant hot water others tend to heat a cylinder of stored hit water. So this boiler is a condensing combi boiler.
Rather than smack the wall plugs in with a hammer and risk damaging the wall, thread the screw slightly into it and then tap into the wall.
If I was you I’d take this video and trash it because you not got a clue what your doing!!
Really! It's all wired in correctly and working perfectly, if I've not got a clue then how have I got this installed correctly? Tell me what you think is wrong with it.
you got to give the reason, can't just slate this video
I think the reason eddtheduck gave is because the potential free relay was wired originally, and then changed to the powered relay once the gentleman making the video actually read the boiler manual (!). I would tend to agree with eddtheduck - it is confusing what was actually going on with the particular wiring arrangement. Otherwise generally good video to see the product and the app. And, most importantly the gentleman was safety conscious, and provided warnings to folk watching this.
Hi, thank you for the video.
I have very vague ideas about heating but got Tado (as they said you can install it yourself)
Well.. my heating set up is different to the one you have demonstrated. It’s a Vaillant plus boiler connected to Dataterm IHC (warmworld) system. How do I get about to replace it with Tado?
