OK.....If you bought the Transgo kit and you don't have a foot press....DO NOT USE ITS SPIRAL SNAP RING!!!!! Its NOT the same as the Sonnax one from the kit PN# 36744-01. Gentlemen, I fought the Transgo unit for 2+ hours till I laid it out side by side next to the Sonnax one. Its a smaller diameter, slightly thicker, and is a total PIA!!!!! Mr. Willimas is definitely installing the Sonnax unit from the kit in the video. It IS possible to do this with a large flathead screwdriver BUT....... I had a much easier time when I switched to a medium sized prybar. Makes it MUCH easier to press down a spring finger WHILE shoving the ring in the slot with the edge!!!!! DONT GIVE UP!!!!! DONT GO 1/2 @$$ and put in the old snap ring!!!! YOU CAN DO IT!
For those who can't make the tool to compress the ring you can lay a 2x4 across the case and wrap some wire around it and bell housing bolt holes and use a small bottle jack to press it down.
ATSG manual says to check the clearence on the overdrive clutch backing plate to case "selective" snap ring. My snap ring is 0.080" and the gap is 0.085" for a total of 0.165". ATSG manual suggests I get part# "e9tz-7b421-da" at 0.120" thickness bringing my gap to 0.045" within the 0.032-0.058" range that is required. This video does not mention any of that, and I cannot find that part. How critical is this tolerance and can I re-use the original snap ring that leave a gap with excessive tolerance?
can you also include some of the older gm models, 350, 400 , 700r4, while there are other videos out there, you have a good presentation with superior knowledge

upon rebuilding my 2003 4r100 (diesel) overdrive clutch pack, I found that it only contained 2 clutches and 2 plates instead of 3. You mentioned the diesel version contained 3. My failure was within the overdrive assembly. Was this assembly possibly installed by someone else or was their a certain year they only used 2 ?
I've been trying to install the snap ring for the large intermediate piston and I can't compress the return spring enough so that the snap ring can fit into its groove. I'm not sure the cause of the problem but it looks like if the piston would move another.015 thou the snap ring could fit. I am physically unable to compress the spring anymore because the tool starts warping. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? Ive pulled everything out and tried to reassemble it but that still didn't help.
I know this is old. If you’re talking about the intermediate piston just forward of the center support (some people online get the forward, direct, and intermediate assembly snap rings mixed up in part descriptions). I’d check to make sure you didn’t use the 3 .125” thick steels in the intermediate clutch pack. If you’ve got an e4od from before 99 or so, there are 2 sets of steels in the kit he sells (most kits). Make sure you compare your steels and use the ones from the kit which match yours. Mine took 2 thinner steels from the kit and one .125” apply steel from the kit.
If you were to use the old center support snap ring, what are the indications that the snap ring has come out of the grove with the transmission installed?

The spiral snap ring is essential guys. Its not worth installing the original. Your R&R guy will appreciate it. Your name goes behind your work.

EBay has a transmission spring compression tool for 30 bucks. It took me 2-3 minutes to put the upgraded snap ring in.
Why didn't you use the sonnax center support shim, it was in the bolt kit? It'll keep the valve body from warping

Isn't there supposed to be a snap ring to help hold the center support in? I didn't see him install one, just the bolts.

My dad's been building for over 40 years and says the replacement center support bolts are cheap and reuse original bolts
