20+ years I never got the anti reflective coating. Didn't think it was worth it. So last couple pairs of glasses I finally did. WHOA. For sure worth it for the $5 it cost. It is a whole new world at night. Like I had been looking through fog for the last 20 years.
(1)In Sunglasses Anti Reflection coatings present or not? (2)Which coating colour is best for Anti Reflection Lenses for eg their are many coatings in market like Green Coating,Blue Coating,Yellowish Coating etc.
Most sunglasses do not have anti reflective on the front or back surfaces of the lenses, but higher quality sunlenses have the coating on the back side. Most coatings do not have a specific color for you to choose from, it depends on the company/product you are purchasing as different companies may have their own formula. My favorite right now is the Crizal Saphire 360, which has very little reflection at all. but seems like a faint light blue.

Reflective coating was discovered by Lord Rayleigh who when investigating the effects of lens smudging found that it actually made the lens better. Ideally the thickness of the coating should be one wavelength. I recently got my new spectacles coated and when I asked the technician how he got it one wavelength thick he answered oh we just stick it in the dye.
Anti-reflective seems like the one thing I really want from glasses besides the correction. I hate shopping and fashion and glasses don't offer the options I want to see. I don't want a Nike swhoosh or a DG on my glasses but why not a range finder, motion tracker and/or some sort of augmented information system over the non-dominant eye? These are the upgrades we were promised in the 1980's lol. I recently learned that all my transition lens glasses are a pain if you are training to be a drone pilot. The sun and the glare from the snow turns my glasses into sunglasses and I always loved it. I honestly rarely noticed when they darkened unless I took my glasses off. Now I find myself trying to read a LCD, maintain a Visual Line of Sight with an aircraft and anything I need to see in-between. I am near-sighted so I have managed by bringing my glasses to the end of my nose and looking over them when I need to. I had my eyes checked today and was quickly overwhelmed with the wall of frames and no real help. I left with nothing but the exam and came home to research. I don't think Blue Light will help with how I use a computer screen outside, transitions is out, so I think just the non reflective, the anti-UV coating on both sides is about for usefulness for me. Will the more expensive lens improve clarity/sharpness more than the C-95 (number might be off, srry) or is it more about durability? Anti-Reflective is the only other improvement I can think of, to help with being outdoor in lots of sunshine and using LCD displays unless you have any other suggestions? Strange question for a very niche market.
I had an eye exam a week ago and when ordering new glasses the optometrist told me they had 3 levels of anti-reflective coating available. My insurance would only fully cover the standard level so that's what I chose. But I'm wondering if there's really a significant difference between the levels and if it's worth it to pay extra for a higher level.
Really good question and I'm preparing a video to review just that! But there is a difference between the standard and higher quality ones. The higher the quality the less color reflections and the more light passes through at different angles. They also add on anti scratch and anti dust technology
There are some that I find bothersome too. Depending on the brand or features, some stand out more. Usually the higher quality ones don't stand out as much.
I ordered an expensive pair of glasses with progresive lens. Unfortunately I accepted this Reflective Coating. After 1 year this coating become broken and partially removed from my glases coming with a dirty lens aspect. I tryed to clean this in different ways but it was impossible. I think now the glases become very dangerous for my eyes because I am looking like through dirty window. I will go for a new pair of glases but I will not request this feature again.
Thank you for sharing your expertise. If long-distance glasses (intended for driving) with anti-glare protection do not visibly reduce any glare, does it help to have the lenses additionally tinted (50%) or what is the best solution? Is it better to opt for adaptive lenses? My main problem is being blinded by modern LED lights from on coming traffic at night. I must be particularly light sensitive. My prescription is +1.50 and I do not wear glasses permanently. For reading, my prescription is add +2.25 for both eye. Thank you
Unfortunately, no. The machines that put the AR coating on are very particular. Basically super expensive heat vacuum chambers with chemicals, and can’t put pre cut lenses inside
I hate anti-reflective coatings. Sure, they reduce glare, but they not only smudge super easily, but they attract dust and lint, and above all, scratch at the slightest touch. Seriously, I can use a microfiber cloth after wetting the lens with the eyeglass cleaning fluid given to me by the same store I got my glasses, and I will ALWAYS have at LEAST one new scratch by the time I'm done. Normally I get about 2 to 5 scratches each time. Add in the tiny spot-like pock marks that seem to appear, and anti-reflective coating isn't worth all the hassle. I'd rather deal with some glare than have to replace my glasses in six months because they're scratched up so badly I can't even use them.
Great video. I just got AR glasses and since I sit at a computer most of the day, they suggested a "Duravision Blue Protect" lens to block out Blue Light. I am noticing a bit of a yellow hue, especially when outside. Sometimes to the point where I'm lifting my glasses to know the difference in color. In your opinion, do the pro's of Blue protect outweigh the yellowish hue to the lens?
Hey Kyle! I personally like the blue protect. There are different brands and lenses that have different levels of blue protection, but in general the more blue protection the yellower the lens. If you are not a big fan of the yellow, consider talking to the optical about having them switched out. Transitions lenses with the Preventia coating will give you 30% blue light protection without having the yellow hue I personally have a pair of Kodac total blue lenses that block 80% but have just a slight blue color that I dont find bothersome unless I am painting or doing something that requires correct color perception. Otherwise I find them rather calming.
The main con for AR glasses is durability, they are expensive and wear off after 2 years. I bought Crizal's AR and now I am not able to see clearly with the worn off coating almost all around the glasses. I'm thinking to go for an uncoated one for this reason.
Great video Doc! Yes, I can easily tell the difference. Question: Can you post video explaining what to expect after cataract surgery? I just had surgery on my right eye, and vision acuity now is great. But there are artifacts such as halos, glare, airy disks and such when looking at lights, especially head lights. Would AR coated, non-prescription glasses help? Thanks! I am a hobby astronomer, weighing the option of surgery or glasses on my left eye.
So evidence says I will see as well... however people can't look me in the eye. I'm sold no more AR. Kidden. :) As a lifetime eyeglass wearer... a good AR is worth more then 1mm off your lens thickness which for most people with a mid to lower +/-4 or so is all you get out of paying double for things like 1.74 and even 1.67. Spend your money on the best coat you can.
The images or what you see from Anti glare or AR coating is much sharper and better compared to one without coating. The people who use lenses with high power can easily make out this subtle difference.
Hello Sir, I truly appreciate your video, I am someone suffering from retinitis pigmentosa being bothered a lot by the sunlight during the day, it will be appreciated if you can suggest a good sunglasses to reduce glare during theday
There are so many good brands! Maui Jims and Costa are 2 of my favorites. With RP, you may want to look into a wide wrapped sunglasses that blocks out even lights coming in from the sides.
What? haha. I did make a cyborg costume for halloween one year though by taking apart 3 desktop computers. Worked out pretty well too. Had like speakers on the shoulders that would play music and sound effects through an MP3 player I had in my hand.
It's the ring-shaped lamp situated behind the camera (the light source). That's why professional portrait studios usually use round softboxes and nothing funny-shaped like a ring.
I have both. My anti glare/reflection glasses started getting scratched and became very hazy in about 1 year. The older cheaper pair I have without the coating is still working since the past 4-5 years. I've read that maybe the coating I got was cheap, but it was a long time ago, so, I can't say. In terms of reflections. if you don't drive, you won't benefit as much from the coating. But if you got the money, buy it.
you nailed it... I work in the automotive field and am probably rough on glasses. I do appreciate the AR coatings but mostly only while driving at night... I think a good piece of advice would be to have a cheap "spare" set of glasses that are without any AR coating. I have old ones that I am literally wearing right now because of this reason BUT the anti-glare is nice if you are basically replacing your glasses every couple years or something then maybe its not an issue but being as I can't see without mine I have many spare sets most of which do not have any coatings.
@@codemiesterbeats So, it is true that the coatings make your glasses more susceptible to scratches, right? I have met so many opticians who straight up deny it and blame it on the users that they are cleaning their glasses with alcohol and rough clothing materials. Jerks.
I don't agree with your explanation of the Anti scratch layer. If we are talking about micro scratches like when you clean a lens with a dry cloth since dust particles can over time wear out the surface of the treatments, i agree, but since you find in the market plastic based lenses, they will always scratch if they take a hit, even with a higher refractive index. The only lenses that don't gets scratched easily are the mineral ones, fantastic clarity, but be always careful with those :P
My new glasses have AR coating, blue blocker and are Transitions lenses, and for some reason I am getting blue "ghost lights" on the insides, both when I'm looking at headlights in my rear view mirror and also when the sunset is hitting my windshield and reflecting off cars in front of me. It's very distracting when I drive. What's more aggravating is I got the exact same coating(s) on these new lenses that I had on my old glasses from 2-3 years ago, BUT the old lens did not have the distracting blue ghost light. The saleslady at the eye doctor said the only difference she could find between the old and new lenses was that the new ones were "digitized." Which I'm assuming means they were made differently or with a new material? (They did mention they go through a third party manufacturer so I'm wondering if the manufacturer is different than a few years ago) ...My best guess is that the new ones are high-index lenses and the old ones weren't. I have no idea. They were going to try removing the blue blocker from the lens and see if that helped, but if that doesn't work, I'm assuming I'd have to pay for any additional changes, as it would be well past 30 days at that point. At this point I think I'm just going to have to live with the blue ghost lights and hope my eyes will get used to always thinking there's 20 police cars behind me. :(
Very informative ! The 1st video I watched of yours about purchasing prescription eyewear online VS going thru a conventional brick/mortar store, I heartily DISAGREED with you (as did the majority of those commenting). But as it relates to the AR coating, here's a question/comment... I've now had TWO pairs of glasses where the AR coating begins to flake off, BOTH with Crizal Avance by the way. I'm "thinking" it might be a chemical of whatever sort from the glycerin soap or other bar soap that I might use occasionally to clean them(?). Nothing but a small rub of my finger over the wet bar like the drop of Dawn that I would also use, but it's disheartening to say the least. While the vision isn't really obstructed, it's seen by others and looks AWFUL to say the least.
Are there glasses that don't reflect the ring lights? That's the problem I have, my old glasses didnt show ring lights when I did videos but my new crizal sapphire does. This is a great disappointment as I really thought the whole point was to look better in pictures and videos. My old lenses were zeiss.
UPDATE! New Version of this video here: ua-cam.com/video/IJxm06ZzCYs/v-deo.html
So that's why these anime villains have these scary shiny glasses when they push them: They don't have anti-reflective coating.

Can you do a review for the AR coating from different manufacturer ? Would like to find out which one is the best. Thank you
Great video.
Transitions lenses with the Preventia coating will give you 30% blue light protection without having the yellow hue
I personally have a pair of Kodac total blue lenses that block 80% but have just a slight blue color that I dont find bothersome unless I am painting or doing something that requires correct color perception. Otherwise I find them rather calming.
Nice video doctor
What is the average cost of this coating? And Is dish soap really the best method for cleaning eyeglasses?
The main con for AR glasses is durability, they are expensive and wear off after 2 years. I bought Crizal's AR and now I am not able to see clearly with the worn off coating almost all around the glasses. I'm thinking to go for an uncoated one for this reason.
WOW!!! Your eyes.....Bewitching!!!
Can we use these glasses for the telescope.
It's the lens they replaced in that eye with the artificial lens. Probably getting some polarized lenses in the glasses can help.
So evidence says I will see as well... however people can't look me in the eye. I'm sold no more AR. Kidden. :)
As a lifetime eyeglass wearer... a good AR is worth more then 1mm off your lens thickness which for most people with a mid to lower +/-4 or so is all you get out of paying double for things like 1.74 and even 1.67. Spend your money on the best coat you can.
The images or what you see from Anti glare or AR coating is much sharper and better compared to one without coating. The people who use lenses with high power can easily make out this subtle difference.
Hello Sir,
I truly appreciate your video, I am someone suffering from retinitis pigmentosa being bothered a lot by the sunlight during the day, it will be appreciated if you can suggest a good sunglasses to reduce glare during theday
There are so many good brands! Maui Jims and Costa are 2 of my favorites. With RP, you may want to look into a wide wrapped sunglasses that blocks out even lights coming in from the sides.
Is he a cyborg? Those eyes look suspiciously mechanical.
What? haha. I did make a cyborg costume for halloween one year though by taking apart 3 desktop computers. Worked out pretty well too. Had like speakers on the shoulders that would play music and sound effects through an MP3 player I had in my hand.
Magus Mxviil it’s the ring light he’s using to record with lol
He is on cocain ;)
@@DoctorEyeHealth this just amplifies your hotness scale 😂
It's the ring-shaped lamp situated behind the camera (the light source). That's why professional portrait studios usually use round softboxes and nothing funny-shaped like a ring.
This is a great video!!!
Thank you so much for this explanation!!
How can i properly clean my glasses without destroying the ar coating?
Glass lenses have the best natural anti scratch
I just got it without the coating since i only have to use it during one class when i can’t really see the little letters on the board
GLasses of course still work without the coating but in general, optical quality is improved with the coating. Hope class goes well for you.
What about the other coatings for water and smudge repellency? And what about the difference between aspheric vs non aspheric lenses?
Is Blue light harmful? I saw something yesterday that it wasn’t. What is true about blue light?
Hey Doc, does getting a mirror coating eliminate the need for an AR coating?
Are there glasses that don't reflect the ring lights? That's the problem I have, my old glasses didnt show ring lights when I did videos but my new crizal sapphire does. This is a great disappointment as I really thought the whole point was to look better in pictures and videos.
My old lenses were zeiss.
