- In this video I explain the difference between Standard and Premium Anti-Reflective coatings. Providing visual examples of the Hydrophobic, Oleophobic and Blue Light blocking layers on the Crizal Alize, Crizal Avance and the Crizal Prevencia.
I mention Crizal quite a bit in this video but in no way did they endorse or sponsor me. I also enjoy and mention the quality coatings made by Carl Zeiss, Shamir, Hoya and Techshield.

If we want all these anti-scratch, anti-dust etc features along with blue-cut and anti-glare then it will bring one more feature that is anti-cheap
They are already anti-cheap which means...not cheap.
Best UA-cam explainer video I’ve seen yet regarding this specific topic. A+++
You have a perfect voice for something like podcasts. I mean that in a good way. I listen to a lot of podcasts. :)
You are such a pleasant personality and I am glad to have come across your channel. Very precise and informative.
Here to serve. Thanks for the kind words.
Man!!! This was good! Clear, descriptive and your diction is crisp! I came here because my wife ordered standard coating and I ordered premium coating before I knew the difference. I almost got mad from the difference in cost, but what you explained is exactly what I need and wanted on my lense. Crisis averted! LOL
Thank you for the great information. You answered so many of my questions.
Ha, I just happened to find your video when deciding between hydrophobic vs oleophobic. Since the latter includes standard + hydro + oleo, decided to go with it and placed by order before your video ended. Thank you!!
Happy to help.
Your video was very informative and well done. Your personality is pleasant, and you are very knowledgeable. I appreciate you taking the time to post this.
I agree. 👍😍
What are high index lenses
Woooooowwww. This guy is clear, concise, and easy to listen to. You can tell he really knows what he's talking about. New sub.
Edit: Gopd to know my glasses are premium (as i thot)...thx Lenscrafters lol
great informational.
wish i had found you sooner, but now have more information in my arsenal when arguing over my 2 year old very expensive crackled computer glasses!
thanks
Your voice is super nice, and you explain it so well. Thanks. I really appreciate your video.
Extremely informative video, thank you!
Ok. I read some comments below and it's unanimous. You need a side gig. Do videos or podcasts or SOMETHING. You have a great personality, voice and very well spoken. Kept my attention the whole time. You have a gift. Do something with it! Great video. Thanks! :)
Thank you for this informative video. Very much appreciated.
Great Job Dude!!! Love that. I am nothing but a consumer -- but its important information.
Great AR review and comparisons!!! Can you do a video explaining the history of AR and how it has improved over decades of research and development?
Wish I found this earlier. Great work!
Thank you. My biggest concern was the durability.
Thanks for the great review. Love the frames you are wearing. What are they?
I’m getting ready to get my new glasses and I planned on getting all the upgrades. If I get a premium AR lens would I still need to get the anti scratch add on or the ultraviolet coating . I have Davis Vision and this is my 1st time with them.
Great video, clear and valuable. I wonder have you looked at frames/lenses for open-top cars. I have a small sports car and wear prescription polarised wrap-around bolle sunglasses. These are great for almost everything except for when I put the ‘top’ down. The sunlight gets behind the lenses and makes vision difficult (especially when driving in dappled sunlight). Wearing a baseball hat or a cool flat cap like yours 😆 solves the problem however I don’t always want to wear a hat (which also have a habit of blowing off). I would welcome any ideas. Maybe this could be the subject of a future video. Many thanks. Kenn
Hello! Thanks for all this informations.
I've an question about Zenni eyeglasses.
They have
Standard
Advanced
Premium
So when you go with Trivex material you're limited to Advanced coating, so is it good enough?
And details would be helpful.
I've had my Crizal Sapphire lenses for about three years now and they're still going strong, although I need to change them not because they're not functioning properly anymore; but because my powers have changed so I need to get a new pair. Crizal Sapphire coatings are pretty expensive, but when you compare them to other standard AR coatings, you'll see that the price to quality ratio is good because they're going to last you a really long time with nearly no decrease in quality.
Really well made video!
For zeiss glass 1.9 refractive index lenses. Would you recommend any of the coating options? They offer super et, gold et and gold and super filter. Thanks
Any updates on this topic? I'm looking at getting new glasses soon.. one for daily use and driving and one for computer use (I spend 12+ hours a day on a computer.) I have a lot of light sensitivity. I can't decide what's best for each. It seems like Sapphire 360 or Prevencia for my computer but maybe Sapphire 360 is not a good choice? Can you help?
Very informative, thank you.
Happy to help any way I can. Have a great weekend.
Thanks 😊 for the great 👍 video and information, i drive a bus 🚎 when the sun 🌞 is going down and continue until 🕑 2am , which AR coating do you recommend for me?
Hi i have difficulty in night driving due to starbrust and halos ..which crizal glass is perfect for me ?
Thanks! Your presentation is very informative! It really helped me understand why my new PAIR glasses with anti reflective coating & blue light protection reflect the blue light from my computer screen and cellphone. I used Zenni before, with the same features (of course not the awesome design & versatility, & quality) and got no blue reflection. I interpret for patients all day via VRI. Sad to see they can't see my eyes that well, but glad I am protected. Since I have far & near sightedness, my prescription is complicated. I need them on all day. It would be great if you evaluated this Shark Tank winner brand! Love them!
You don't need blue light filter to protect your eyes, the light of the sun itself has much more blue light, it's what keep your your day/night cycle in sync. Blue light filter is just to help you sleep better, but you have to use it only at night. And you can also turn on night shift mode on your devices and avoid bright white lights before bed.
Ordered a high power rimless glasses, there's no offer from lab/supplier to reduced thickness of lens option in high index. Is this normal?
Hi .. Its anti-reflection feature helps to eliminate the problem of duplication of the text if it is used in a teleplompeter?
If I have crizal easy uv coating, should there be the crizal fog ID? Just got new glasses!
Very helpful. Thank you.🙏🏼❤️
Very useful, Thank you sir... From India... :)
Hello! Our community from India has been the #1 support group and I really appreciate the love and support.
Love this video.
I just got a new prescription for my Burberry frames two days ago. My Rx is for computer/reading with blue blocking light (higher end) with anti-reflective coating. I'm on Zoom calls all day and notice there is a noticeable bad reflection on my lenses in meetings. The reflection of my laptop screen are on my lenses. After that happened, I've read online that if you are on Zoom calls all day, it's best to not have blue blocking light lenses. I have 3-4 weeks to change my mind on lenses with where I got my glasses. Do I remove the blue blocking and just get AR lenses (Crizal 360)?
With my old pair with blue blocking light lenses (one version older than the new ones), I do find they help with eye strain. I get less eye fatigue. Perhaps the size of lenses in my old pair of glasses are slightly smaller that the reflection wasn't so prominent but the Burberry frame lenses are VERY noticeable as the lenses are slightly bigger.
Many thanks again for your time!
Get photochromic lenses. They have the blue light filter built into the material.
Great video! Can you also do a video on the differences in standard-premium--ultra progressive lenses
Hey great informative video!
I have to do my new glasses early on. what would you say are the best lenses between Zeiss and Essilor? specifically referring about Crizal or DuraVision Platinum and between Prevencia or BlueProtect.
Thank you
To be quite honest, at this point they are just about even. I wouldn’t recommend going for a blue light AR coating, instead, I would suggest looking into essilor essential blue lenses. They filter blue light in the lens and not through a coating. Then you can add the AR of you choice on top of that.
In the next year or two blue light AR will be a thing of the past. It will all be done in the lens.
Hope this helps. :)
@@EyeInfluence thank you👍
Hi Eye Influence, can I ask for your expertise and do you know what blue light filter lenses have most clear look (most have yellowish tint)? I'm really annoyed by that as I'm designing on computer and sometimes I can't see right hex.
Gunnar has 4 lens options and one of them is called Crystaline. It has almost no color but the blue light filter is also really low. Felix Gray and Pixel offer 50% BPF and their lenses are virtually colorless. You should give them a try.
Hope this helps. Thanks for reaching out.
thanks for the info. very helpful
Very helpful. Thank you.
Definitely getting oleophobic for my next pair because I wear a lot of lotion and do have greasy hair sometimes. My sister is gonna get it for my niece's next pair too for that and her fingerprints.
Hi! I'm trying to decide between Crizal Prevencia or Zeiss Duravision blueprotect. I work in front of the computer. Which one should be better for me?
Hi Oliver, Does the Xperio UV polarized lenses offer full anti-reflective coating on both sides of the lens or do they just offer glare reduction and you'll have to get an AR coating on top of it?
For sunglasses you'll want to avoid AR on both side. Backside only is the way to go. The Xperio UV polarized lenses have NO AR automatically included. You'll have to request it when you have your glasses made.
Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
@@EyeInfluence thanks for the knowledge sir!
Do you think AR coating helps with the white lights from cars? I was thinking on getting the blue blocking together with the AR because driving has become a pain specially with this new bright awful white lights, but also every device I use including my tv are bothering me specially at night. I had LD bulbs at home and had to change them all to warmer ones because I felt my brain was frying.
The AR coating reduces the halos, and rays of upcoming traffic.
thank you so much for the information , bless you
Thanks for making such a video... You did say you are using that Crizal Alize lens but doesn't that have a green colour effect at certain angles? I'm not seeing that with yours which I really like. Was it a feature you told them not to include so as to not get that green colour? The Crizal Prevencia has a purple colour which I am not too fond of.
I think it has more to do with the position of my lighting than the AR itself. I try to place the lights at such an angle that it limits the amount of reflections. My coatings does have a bit of Greenish hue to it, it's just not too noticeable on the video.
As for prevencia, I'm not a big fan. I own a pair and I would only suggest that for low blue light blocking computer glasses. I couldn't wear lenses with that coating all day. It had way too much color on it.
Thanks for watching! Have an awesome day.
Eye Influence thanks for the response. I'll try the Alize and hopefully it doesn't come with alot of the greenish colour 😊
I just received my eyeglasses and blue light glare is intense. To be honest I had no idea it would cause a hue and just ordered it because the lady convinced me. I will be going back to get them replaced because I get a blue haze that intense. Im just confused about the colorless AR. Should I go back and ask for a Crizal Alize or just Colorless anti-reflective?
So sorry for the late reply. By default, premium AR coatings will have very little color. I'm a big fan of the Crizal Sapphire 360 and the Shamir glacier. Very little color and super durable.
Does premium anti glare coating with UV protection have a light grey tint ?
I just got my new glasses that has Crizal Sapphire HR Clear coating but when I take a photo of my self I still get the glare from the flash or studio light. Is this normal situation?
Saben si este modelo Crizal alize el color que refleja es verde ?
What coating do you have on your non blue light pair?
Sir, is it saved to wash or clean the ar coating lenses with a dish wish once a day...?
Does the coating only go on certain brand of lens? Like is Crizal only going to be put on an Essilor lens? Or could it be put on another brand of lens?
What coatings do you recommend for real GLASS lenses? I want to get Zeiss Glass Lenses. What's the best premium anti-reflective coating as of 2024 for Zeiss? Should I get the hydrophobic and oleophobic coating too or will they wear off over time? Thank you.
Very informative. Thank you so much for making this video.
what would be the pricing range for premium AR coatings at retail?
can we have a polarized prescription clear lens ? does that exist?
Do you think Crizal Sapphire is noticeably better than Crizal Avance? Do you think it's worth the price difference ($30 is what I'm seeing)?
so what about reducing glare from car headlights? they claim the AR coating helps with that too
Just bought a new pair of glasses (CR-39 - RT +.5 / LT +1.5) with the prevencia coating as I am on digital screens for 10 plus hours a day. Have been told to only wear plastic lens due to my prescription. I knew going in that I would have the violet reflections from the front side but I am having issues with the backside of the lens. When light hits the back of the lens I am getting JJ Abrams violet lens flare. It's mostly in my peripheral vision but it's very distracting. Have been told to give it time although I don't know how that will resolve the issue. It seems to me the back side has more violet reflections than the front. Any input would be most welcome. Thanks
It’s the prevencia coating. It’s for that same reason that I don’t like to wear lenses with that type of coating. You may want to look into filtering blue light on the lens level and not on the coating level. Look into Shamir Blue Zero or BluTech lenses. Those are better choices.
@@EyeInfluence Hi. I tried Gunnar Cruz glasses with the clear lens. I thought the glare reduction was good, but I look at a screen at work with a white wall behind me and I had a lens flare just to the right of my right eye, similar to Mr. Paul's experience. Would a different type of lens really make a difference? Thanks in advance.
amazing video
Your video helped me a lot for my purchase decision. Which brand do you suggest when compared to Zeiss or crizal?
I've tried both brands over the years and I have to say they are pretty much equal. Much like Toyota and Honda, Crizal and Zeiss make similar products with the same level of quality.
I was in this dilemma once. I made some research and found that thy both r same. So i chose Zeiss becz of NOKIA's camera
I was looking at buying glasses online, can you tell me which company makes the best protective coating. I was looking at eyebuydirect, they have the EBD blue, is this anygood? And is there any driving glasses that block night light glare from oncoming cars? Those yellow lenses don't work for me, thanks
It's really hard to say which company has the best quality AR coating since they all call it something different. If you could find an online company that uses Crizal, Zeiss or Shamir then it's easier to make a suggestion. I like the Shamir Glacier and the Crizal Sapphire coatings but those are usually only found through your local optical shop.
As for night glare you may want to try a pink or rose color tint with an AR coating on top of that. Again, you may have trouble finding an online retailer willing to do custom work so you may end up having to visit your local optical store.
I hope this helps. thanks for reaching out.
@@EyeInfluence Yes, you are correct, they only use a standard AR coating, I just talked to them, I look at the computer all day, so I'm thinking I should pay for the best I can get, and I guess for the price they're charging, I should have known. Thanks for your help
is the ZEISS DriveSafe the best coating out there?
Did they discontinue Crizal Easy? I remember it being a "B category" on Eyefinity.. Just curious..
Thank you!
Should I get Pristine coating instead of the Hard coating in my next pair? The Pristine cost £20 more... I live in London so need the best hydrophobic coating...
Yes. Especially when you need to not only reduce moisture on the lenses but also be able to wipe the lenses clean quickly. Lower end coating may say they have hydrophobic layers but they are a pain to clean. I suggest going for the best AR coating you have available.
Great video! I look forward to more! Where can we get these premium coatings online?
I've checked a few places and unfortunately most online shops don't carry a good variety of premium AR coatings. EZContacts carries the entire Crizal coating line but that's about it. In order to get a full range of options you might have to visit a local store.
Companies like Crizal, Zeiss and Shamir and pretty faithful to physical locations so they give them priority. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before we see them online.
What I can say is many places will use the term "premium" or "superior" when describing their coatings but they are really just standard coatings. I'll do more research on online options and get back to you if I find more choices.
Thanks for the support!
Try Eyebuydirect or Zenni
Hi! What is your opinion on the Nikon lenses. I am waiting for the frame to arrive and decide what lenses to get
Nikon isn't a big player in the lens industry. Most of the innovation comes from companies like Essilor (parent company of Crizal), Zeiss, Shamir and Hoya.
Any specific coatings from Nikon that you're thinking about getting?
@@EyeInfluence Thank you for the reply! This time I am getting the basic HCC one. There is a huge price difference between the anti blue coating from Nikon and Centennial; about 260 vs 120 CAD. Not sure if the cheaper Centennial worth a try...
Thanks for info
Hi there, I got a question: My eyeglasses' lenses are not Anti Reflective coated. Can I just add it on now? Or is it too late?
Some places can add it to existing lenses. If they are not scratched yet it should be just fine.
@@EyeInfluence Thanks!
is there anything you cant use to clean these glasses? ( that would damage coating )
Do not use alcohol, Acetone or pre moistened towelettes. Dish soap is good (don't use anything with moisturizers) and don't fog it up with your breath. :)
@@EyeInfluence I actually emailed Essilor with this question, and this is their response, "The only dishwashing liquid we recommend consumers use on their Ophthalmic Lenses is Dawn (non concentrated)." I bought a 25 oz bottle for $2.00. That should last me for a very long time. I was very surprised that they only recommended one dish soap, but I've been using it and it has been great.
As far as cleaning goes, they simply said to rinse the lenses under running warm (not hot) water first (to remove any debris), rub the lenses on both sides with that particular dish soap, rinse the soap off, then dry the lenses with a microfiber cloth (like what comes with the lenses). I take this a step further by only using cold water (they still come clean), and blowing the remaining water off of the lenses (so nothing touches them). I thought it would help to post the official cleaning method recommended by that lens manufacturer.
You seem like such a positive person to be around/chill. Liked for that alone, much less the great explanation
Which ar coating has the best blue blocker ? Highest quality
I just was told $60 for regular AR and $120 for premium AR. It is good to know premium AR is good stuff but does that price seem reasonable?
If you’re getting something like a Crizal Saphire or Avance then yes, that’s a standard price for those coatings.
Does the premium ar smudge in the long run or is that only on the standard?
Eventually you’ll find that they smudge also.
Thanks mate
What is your opinion on Clearshield UV complete AR?
E McHale I need to about this too??? someone help please
I have ar coating and transition on my new glasses lens but it work for first 4 day then after 4 day pass when I wip my lens I put my glasses on it stick dust and dirty and sometime smudge within minute of wearing it and I have to clean it again within minute 10 or more time what seem to be the problem is it my lens coating on it or something
What kind of AR did you get? There are some low quality coatings (like those from costco) that will always give you trouble.
@@EyeInfluence I think it is normal ar coating but not sure if it is or not I have go to place I got it from ask them
Can you comment on Transition Lenses please.
3:45 You test the oleophobic treatment with Goo Gone, which "remove sticky, greasy messes"? I wouldn't say "soap" is the same as oil.
I was told by an optometrists assistant that when it comes to blue blocking ar, they are practically all the same with different branding in 2019.
I can hardly find any reviews for Hoya Recharge. I'm concerned it might not be good enough for my time at the computer. Have you had any friends that had it on their blue blocking lens? Can you maybe talk about it or comment on it?
Correct, blue light blocking coatings all reflect blue light, they don't filter it. I have yet to find a blue light coating that I'm happy wearing all day. I'd rather have blue light filtering inside the lens.
Eye Influence they also advised of that. Of lens types that absorbed instead of reflect. For example, shamir blue zero or something like that, is built into the very lens itself.
I am enjoying my new glasses so far. The recharge is helping a lot more than my previous pair, but I'm afraid I may want filtering inside the lens more than the deflect.
These coating are good for glass lenses or other plastic/polycarbonate lenses? or both?
You'll find these coating on plastic lenses 99% of the time. glasses is almost never used these days with prescription lenses.
Crizal prevencia or Hoya blue control ?
Are Crizal Sapphire good AR lenses? That is what i ordered through my local eye doctor?
Crizal Sapphire is among the best. It's a great choice.
@@EyeInfluence I came here looking for some independent recommendation of the sapphire. Thanks.
Zeis platinum or crizal sapphire?
zero dislike, that's impressive
You jinxed it!!! 😂
What do you recommend for glasses to be used only for night driving, I was thinking Crizal saphhire.
I love Crizal coatings. Sapphire is awesome and it would be a great choice for night time glare reduction. Shamir Glacier and Zeiss coatings are also great quality.
Sorry for the late response. :)
@@EyeInfluence TY!
So, when buying eyeglasses, should I say premium A.R coating ? Is that it ? Or ?
I bought mine today. They asked me to have some features, like transition , A.R Coating , but didn’t ask me Standard or premium, so they probably gave me the Standard .
But, next time when buying eyeglasses, I know what to say, I’ll say “ Premium’
Hi! i really love your video i just started watching you a couple days ago. Do felix gray standard lenses have a premium AR coating?
im really struggling to decide between felix gray and eyebuydirect glasses with their coating. I've relied on your videos a lot but i'd love some insight! :)
Really sorry for the delayed response. I'm a big fan of the Felix Gray coatings. I wouldn't call it premium, but I would say they are good quality. I find them easy to clean and with very little color. I'm not sure if you can get Crizal coatings through EyeBuyDirect but if so then I'd say EyeBuy has better coatings. Keep in mind that Felix Gray lenses are special because the lens itself filters blue light and not only the coating. So, you may not get a "premium" AR like the Crizal Avance but you're getting the total package with them, blue light protection and AR coating.
Hope this helps. Sorry again for the delayed response.
@@EyeInfluence Dont apologize! Thank you so much! I don't think eye buy direct has Crizal coatings, it is something called EBDBlue. Do you know where i can would be able to get a Crizal coated pair of computer glasses? I don't want to spend too much more money than the felix gray glasses but if its noticeably better than i'm willing to spend a little extra! Thank you so much again for the response! i love your videos!
@@EyeInfluence I just saw your response to another comment about the crizal only being available in stores. :( i guess i will stick to the Felix Gray glasses for now. I have 3 pairs coming on thursday! Hopefully one of them fits well haha. I love that they have the no-hassle free returns.
is duravision platinum (carl zeiss) good compared to your example?
I love zeiss coating. Pure coat is one of my favorite coatings on the market. DuraVision Platinum is in the same category so yes, i would consider it a premium AR.
@@EyeInfluence Thank you! what about crizal forte + transition? Is that also premium AR? Thank you again
@@ekasitbuppunhasmai6336 It looks like that is only available in India. From what I can see on their website, the Forte is equivalent to the Crizal Alize. I would have to say that yes, it would be considered a premium AR. It looks like the Crizal Sapphire is available to you in India so you may want to also look into that coating since it's the best available.
Hope this helps. Thanks for the support.
Eye Influence Thank you! Really love your vids because people don’t usually get this much information. One last question. Maybe I’m too paranoid, but how do I know that I get the coating I paid for? What if the shop give me cheap AR when I paid for premium? Thank you very much
anyone had coating from Zenni optical ? its recommending a standard coating for me, i wounder, can premium coating affect the prescriotion ?
No coating will affect the prescription.
Buy the premium if you can afford it, definitely worth it
how do we distinguish between the standard and premium coating once we make the purchase for a 'premium' lens? How do i make sure that it is indeed Premium?
EDIt: also thank you for your video. No one else on youtube puts it as well as you did here. Thank you.
This. Is there a way to know before the warranty ends and the cheap coating starts crazing :(?
Hi thanks for posting informative vids . I'm subscribed, had a question, I'm currently going through a small disagreement with a online eye lense store. I purchased 3 sets of prescript lenses , trans 7, premium ar coating claiming anti fog water dust smudge repellent.. I showed the CEO of this company that they weren't anti fog through a video,, on feb 7th when I received them. So as of today they no longer advertise anti fog on any of there premium ar coating because of my inquiry. Also they do smudge easy but I did do the oil on lense test and oil rolled off like water does.. I was wondering will a standard ar coating with water repellent allow oil to roll off like water does??...
... Now I'm kinda confused and feeling robbed cause I'm not sure if I'm paying for premium ar but got standard, that says anti glare water repellent 100% uv. Oh and forsure I'm paying a nice amount of cash. . The CEO text me today saying they are anti fog , but to get 100% anti fog would require me to wait about 4 weeks , he didnt address the smudge proof issue either. I dont know what to think .. I googled search UA-cam cant find a answer ... thanks for your time
There are many AR coatings claiming to have premium features like Anti-static, oleophobic and hydrophobic layers. I have yet to find an AR coating that truly is smudge proof so with that I would say no matter what you pay you'll end up getting smudges.
The features that are important on an AR coating are how easy they are to clean, how little color it has and how well it resists scratches. Everything else never going to be fully "proof".
I've found that Crizal coatings perform the best when it comes to smudges, fog resistant and anti-static. Zeiss is another that I would trust because they make coatings for glasses and high end camera lenses. Outside of that I would be sceptical of their claims.
I hope this helps. I know it's not a perfect answer but it could help guide your next purchase. Thanks for the sub and for watching the videos.
Does Lenscrafters carry Crizal?
Not at the moment. But LensCrafters just merged with Crizal‘ a parent company, Essilor, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they offered it soon.
What can one do to make a oleophobic coating last as long as possible?
Avoid all cleaning solutions with alcohol, don't use windex, don't use pre moistened towelettes and clean the glasses with running water. It may not be possible to do all these things all the time but all of this helps.
@@EyeInfluence I'll try this with my new lenses. Now, if only my iPad was waterproof too...
I like to wash my glasses with dishwashing soap. Is it bad? and what is the best way to clean glasses everyday?
I actually suggest dish soap. As long as it doesn’t have moisturizer in it.
You said that green hue is residual reflection ryt??? 7:16 ,i see the reflection of tube light or box light at front of glasses especially when they are back at me as a line of green and box of green sp irritating 😢😢😢😢
Which premium AR would be best for driving at night
They're all very good. The more important thing is to keep them clean.
