the way the framing switches at 2:00 and Leo loses his cool and makes a rawly emotional plea... only time in the film either of these guys shows how they really feel about each other. the whole movie was building up to this. breathtaking performance from both.

Hats play a big part in this movie. That last shot of Tom, leaning against the tree, fixing his fedora then looking up as Leo walks away is so melancholy. Tom says earlier there's nothing more ridiculous than a man chasing his hat. Yet, as much as Tom tries to fix that fedora on this head, you get the sense that he will always be chasing that hat as he longs to find some kind of meaning in his life now that he's free of Leo.

All that fighting, all that treachery, all the secrets revealed... and Leo didn't learn a damn thing. I can see why Tom ended their friendship.

Yeah even Tom didn't really change or learn anything even when he got the money to pay off the bookies he went straight back to gambling plus I always interpreted his last look to imply he'll still be looking out for Leo from a far.

The end of this film is a wonderful thing. It’s not about money, women, power or the thrill of winning. It’s one man doing what was best for his friend because he loves him. And he has to walk away because his friend will be better off and happier. Being a true friend is summed up in this film.

Yeah, I disagree with that to an extent. It’s more than one thing. I think Tom is also disgusted that Leo would let it all slide, especially the forgiveness for sleeping with his fiance (“I didn’t ask for that and I don’t want it.”).
I also view it as a breakup. You do that bc the person isn’t good for you and you’re not good for them. To your point, there is also a level of respect and even love in a serious breakup. If Tom didn’t really care about Leo, he wouldn’t mind “living the lie” for longer. He’d fake it for his own well being, but Tom has too much respect for himself and Leo to do that any longer. It’s a sober assessment of the relationship and a final decision. Like any breakup though, there is also a level of resentment.

No, Tom has to walk away cuz to return to working for Leo after manipulating events & killing Bernie for his benefit would make him a bitchass flunkie, no better than tha Dane & others. He cares about Leo, but not enough to like debase himself by becoming a mere flunkie; nothin more embarrassing than a grownass man chasing after tha hat of validation

I saw this film when it came out in Kansas City while there for some training. I had nothing to do that evening and looked to see what was playing nearby. I saw it was a Coen brothers movie I knew I had to see it! I walked out of the movie theater in awe of the performances, the writing and the story line itself. Truly one of the top 100 movies of all time.

Every time I see even one scene of this movie I think it’s the best Coen film until No Country. It might just be their best with no qualifiers. Byrne , Finney and Polito all rule in this.

Anyone else think that Tommy doesn’t just “break up” with Leo out of love but also out of lack of respect? Earlier in the movie he says to Verna “if he forgives me he’s an even bigger smack than I thought”. And he just watched what Casper did to the Dane, if you don’t trust your leader how can you follow him?

Some of these lines are verbatim from James Cain's Seranade. Coens said so. The Dane is a character plucked directly from that story. Same name the Dane.
Cain was pure genius and so are Joel and Ethen. This is their best film. Swept the Cane (sp?) film festival for a reason.

That's not why he ended his relationship with Leo. He did it because Leo didn't learn anything. Tom realised that Leo is going to just carry on as he always has, even after all the hoops that Tom jumped through to help bring down Leo's enemies. Plus he knew that Verna wouldn't ever forgive him for Bernie's death.

Seems probable to me that if Tom had stayed with Leo that the woman would have found a way to have him bumped off since she knew he killed her brother and she wouldn't forget. She was the the film noir type that was self-centered and ruthless. She marries Leo because she wants his money and power. Sooner or later she would get rid of him also. Leo would be too much in love to see it coming and wouldn't listen to Tom if he warned him. Best Tom can do is move on and live his life even with the regret that Leo will have a bad end. There is some famous saying from a french man, I think, about when there are troubles between two men there is usually a woman at the center of it. Not to say all woman are bad, but some can tear things up.
