  • This is how I get some of the odor out of a skunk that has sprayed.
    21/2 gallons of warm water with dish soap
    2 cups vinegar
    1 cup baking soda
    1 cup proxide
    10 minute soak ("ish" if it really went off it might be need a few more minutes or put through twice)
    3 gallons clean water to rinse, rinse twice

    My grandfather was a farm boy who trapped skunks in Fulton County, Indiana, more than a hundred years ago.
    Sometimes, when he went to school (one-room schoolhouses in those days), the teacher would have him sit in the back. I'm guessing he had a less-than-perfect technique in getting rid of the odor.

    Lol, WA or CO... Cool video! I think it's near impossible to get all the smell out. Have you found a set to work better on a reset after a skunk? John.

      I think you're the 1st one the get my CO-WASH joke....I thought it was funny:) They always smell even with a good wash, but this seems to make most of the smell go away once they are dry. I've never caught anything after a skunk besides another skunk or opossum. Everyone says it's a fox magnet but we don't have very many foxes around. thanks for checking it out

    What kind of trap did you use, I couldn't see it? Have you tried conibears for skunks?

    • @backyardmeat
      @backyardmeat  7 років тому

      This was in a #3os duke. I do catch skunks with conibears I use a 120's or 155's in a box with anything stinky for bait and it works great. Just don't set these if there's any pets around

      I think they are $3-5ish, All I had ever caught before this year was spotted skunks and they are more like $12-15 each.....everybody loves a free skunk:)

      if you leave the lower lip and feet on people buy the spotted skunks on ebay for way more than then the fur buyers not sure what your state lets you do with them worth checking out

    • @Nekogirl2543
      @Nekogirl2543 4 роки тому +2

      If you're skinning them, they are located om the left and right side of the anus. You just have to cut in a triangle around it. You go from ankle to ankle, then from the base of the tail cutting upwards.

    i picked up a few skunks last year and froze them any tips on thawing them and keeping the smell down until i can skin them any tips would be great thank you for taking the time to share what you know with those of us who want to know great video thanks again

    • @backyardmeat
      @backyardmeat  7 років тому

      Personally I would defrost them all the way out so I knew where the scent gland are, sometimes thing aren't in the right place when they are still frozen.....only other tip is go slow around the glands and don't squeeze or pull to hard and the pelt or body

    They stink, but are a beautiful animal. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but I want to get a good double striped one to mount! I mounted a spotted once and it turned out pretty cool. Later

      I agree, they are super cool looking. I just wish they didn't spray

    • @mirandaneizer3605
      @mirandaneizer3605 3 роки тому

      I know this is an old comment but does the pelt eventually stop smelling after you mount it?
      I caught one in the trap (stealing eggs) and id love to skin and pickle the hide but I don’t want to go through all the trouble if it’s never gonna stop smelling.

    I have had skunks living under my back porch almost non stop for 5 years. I have tried EVERYTHING. I put chicken wire in ground they just dig longer n longer tunnels or dig in other spots. In a small neighbourhood that is 10 x 3 blocks we prob have 30 to 50 skunks. It seems to be unstoppable. Its in city limits so u cant shoot. Someone drowned 1 and it made the news that the person who did it was wanted for animal cruelty cuz he threw it alive in the cage in the river. But there are jus too many its part of life.

    • @backyardmeat
      @backyardmeat  10 років тому

      If they have started to dry I wouldn't. there's commercial skunk removers at pet stores that works too. You just spray it on the fur, it more expensive but in might make your cellar smell better

    • @backyardmeat
      @backyardmeat  10 років тому

      I've heard that too, we just don't have foxes in this area (or many at all) I have a set about 50 yards away so I'm hoping it will work to get a cat in the area
