I haven't seen this video for a couple of years now. That's to say thank you for giving me this chance to both experience it again and your share of how it hit you. Try not to over think Jacob. In the end and I believe how he plays deomonstrates this. Just enjoy. One of the beauties of Jacob's music is-I believe-he hears something in his mind and he just figures out how to realize it. If that means tapping on a box of spoons or playing cymbals with his hands he doesn't care. What matters is the effect. Jacob has an uncanny ability in his understanding of sound. He knows the emotion he wants to elicit and he knows how to find the perfect sound/note to get that emotional response. That may be his true super power. The power to understand the powerful bond between music and our emotions. Keep going this is wonderful.
He was still a teenager. You are much more musically astute than most music reactors. 👍👍Your music education "worked". Having 'a lot of stuff' gives plenty to discover on each listen. Jacob talks about receiving an email from Quincy Jones. He thought it was a school-mate prank. Jacob has talked about slightly 'cheating'. Sometimes, to get low notes below his range, he sings the octave above then slows it down by half to get the octave below. If he were singing words, he'd half to sing them twice as quickly! Happy, Peaceful New Year. ☮ Would it help to pause recording and gather your thoughts, or make notes? A few reactors do that. It doesn't seem too intrusive (to me). Though the ones I remember were doing lyric analysis. You've already reacted to several of my favourites, especially "Little Blue" Mahogany Session. 😭 I like his audience choirs, especially _Jacob Collier - Somebody To Love (Live in Lisbon)_ ua-cam.com/video/cCl7_tXs80Y/v-deo.html I've commented already, he learned a new song for each city on his 2022 World Tour then extemporised with that cities audience. _Jacob Collier - Dancing Queen feat. Alita Moses (Live in Stockholm)_ ua-cam.com/video/wEUnXXTZE-Y/v-deo.html is lovely, partly for Alita Moses performance. He only asked her if she'd duet 15 minutes before the gig's "curtain up". AFAIK, Unrehearsed. She is remarkable. As slightly off-beat choices, I like _Jacob Collier - Lua (feat. MARO) [live]_ ua-cam.com/video/4PIMR_oGRcU/v-deo.html It is very different, relaxed, lower intensity. MARO has a gorgeous voice (she even sang for Portugal in a Eurovision), and his Mum plays violin as part of the 'Sydney Strings' sextet. _Jacob Collier, Lizzy McAlpine & John Mayer - Never Gonna Be Alone (Live At The Troubadour)_ ua-cam.com/video/2ScNNmzlFmk/v-deo.html The audience are a bit 'screamy', but Lizzy McAlpine has a lovely voice, and John Mayer guitar _is_ sublime, maybe exquisite. Notice Jacob has his custom 5-string guitar. _Jacob Collier - Here Comes The Sun (feat. dodie)_ ua-cam.com/video/dXf1nUVdVuM/v-deo.html a cover of George Harrison's lovely song. His love of Gnawa-like rhythms becomes evident. A sweet video, I believe set in his Mum's garden. His #IHarmU series is delightful. Patreons sent him short pieces of music they'd made, then he harmonises around them. It is impressive how he can make average singers sound good through harmony and accompaniment. My favourite is _Jacob Collier's __#IHarmU__ Vol. 2_ ua-cam.com/video/nzHF225ibak/v-deo.html but mainly for little Soléy May's "Twinkle Twinkle" 😂. The first performer is from Pentatonix. Pick any one of the series to appreciate what he does.
Ooops, sorry; forgot to include: _Jacob Collier & Chris Martin - Fix You (Live from the O2 Arena)_ ua-cam.com/video/TwC0Db7oerM/v-deo.html is lovely with the audience. Also: _Jacob Collier - Fix You (Live for There With Care)_ ua-cam.com/video/xwPnSS702Ow/v-deo.html This is solo, during 'stay home'. It was for the "There With Care" charity _"a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families with children battling medical crises"._ The comments are deeply moving. You might find it helps you. Happy, Peaceful New Year. ☮
Have you ever heard of The Real Group? They're one of the best A Cappella groups on the planet. They're from Sweden. Just celebrated their 40th anniversary. Could you please react to a few of their songs? Some of my favorites of theirs are Words, I Sing You SIng, It Becomes Her, Commonly Unique, and their Count Basie Medley. There are live performances of all of these here on UA-cam. I wish more folks knew about them.
Yeah - this one was one his "breakthrough" vids where his "internet popularity" really took off! Love your reactions! Keep 'em coming on all the musics you like! His Christmas stuff is fantastic so save that for next year! (I'm thinking his version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" with Tori Kelly, "The Christmas Song.. Chesnuts roasting etc etc, and "In the bleak mid-winter" that has four magical chords that will blow your mind) - other "anthems" of his include "World oh World" with the Aeolians of Oakwood University, "Bridge over Troubled Water" with Yebba, John Legend, and Tori, and one of my favorite ones from when he was practicallly a baby, "Georgia on my Mind". But don't go down the rabbit hole TOO much! I love your reactions to all different kinds of stuff.
What a wonderful world awaits you! I will be happy to come along on your Jacobian journey. His interviews are also fascinating, and he does Logic Breakdowns showing all of the layered vocals he does in the production software. He is so open and kind and unpretentious, he reminds me of AURORA. I feel blessed to have been alive for the Beatles, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and now for Jacob and AURORA. Such genius!
It doesn't surprise me at all that you have an actual musical background! You may think it's insignificant and long lost in the past and curse yourself for not "keeping up with it", forgetting how to read, etc... but that DOESN'T MATTER! All that stuff stays with you no matter what, and influences your ability to listen, to discern, and to appreciate what you're hearing when you are exposed to music as rich and complex as this! Where you're awed, others would be lost. We LOVE seeing your reactions because you KNOW what you're seeing! As you mentioned, this is one of his earliest videos, and it is the video that was brought to Quincy and he freaked out over to anyone and everyone who he could get to listen. This is what started it all between them. Not much for me to talk about technically in this one that you haven't already, (and I already wrote a book on All Night Long!), so I'll just say always looking forward to the next one!
Thank you. Sometimes I feel like I know what I'm talking about minus the proper terms. It's a weird phenomenon I've experienced most of my life. Didn't even think it might be due to my 3 years in band in elementary school. But it makes sense.
Jacob is hyper connected to great and original composer musicians, who themselves tend to be hyper connected to great original composer musicians. Becca Stevens - Michael League- David Crosby MARO-Rita Payes- Sylvia Perez Cruz-Salvador Sobral Chris Thile- where to start... Norman Bird and many guests on his radio show. Maddison Cunningham, well, Norman Bird and on and on Following these Jacob "endorsements" has been as rewarding as his own insanely rich music. My Current fix is Rita Payes, a 25 yo Catalonian, jazz, folk, latin trombonist/singer. "Tantas Cosas (Live video)" string quartet and voice is new. Like early Bartok setting words like Whitman via Frida Kahlo. These are great reactions BTW. MommaOG always worth a click.
There are no Favorites with Jacob Collier. Everything is absolutely exceptionally well done, defies gravity and as far as I’m concerned, his only equal is JS Bach concerning harmonic invention. This is certainly the real deal.
Jacob has perfect pitch accurate to 100ths of a semitone. He can hear a note and say "That's E but 14 cents flat". He can also sing on demand an E with perfect accuracy or an E 14 cents flat. He routinely produces his vocals with "just intonation", where the major 3rd of a chord is actually not the note you hear on the piano, it's actually 14 cents flat (hence my example above), and he sings it 14 cents flat, so that the chord sound "perfectly tuned" based on physics, on the "harmonic series". He also often produces songs in keys that don't exist (on a piano or in the standard western 12 tone scale), because they are in between notes. He has absolutely no need for pitch correction, and never uses it (at least on his own vocals, and only sparingly if ever on other people's).
Seems unlikely given his precision pitch control, a level perfect pitch I haven't seen before in terms of cents. But if Wings of Pegasus is correct he or someone on his promo team may have pitch corrected Tori Kelly. Personally, I don't really care because she's pretty perfect live anyway. He can also do crazy precision poly-rhytmically: ua-cam.com/video/XLfMuRc9jq4/v-deo.html
@@bryanleggo3489 I skimmed that video and saw that he also claimed Jacob's harmonies are A440 equal temperament, which is audibly not true, so I'm not sure what was going on with his analysis. I actually could believe that Jacob pitch corrects himself sometimes. His Logic session breakdowns in general make it clear that he's very much not a purist about how his studio work is performed, and though he regularly demonstrates that he's capable of singing pitches very precisely, he by no means manages to do it 100% of the time in his live shows. Of course, in the studio he has the benefit of multiple takes, and that might be enough of an advantage to allow him to nail everything, but even then, I could see him deciding he really likes a take despite imperfect intonation. The idea that he of all people would do it equal tempered is silly, though.

This was the 1st Jacob UA-cam video that had a big impact and the one that Quincy saw and immediately reacted by having his people call Jacob.

Two in a few hours? Nice, thank you. Keep going down that rabbit hole, there's a lot of beautiful work to see from him
Crazy yes but good crazy. Momma, your eyebrows said it all, no words needed.
😅They have minds of their own. lol

I would 100% agree with that recommendation and that list of suggestions, and would add to it, Gøta.

Thank you. All of those are on my list except the Christmas stuff. I hope you or others will remind me in the fall! 😅
The harmonies are sick!

Real cool stuff but the voices sounds Pitch correctet.
