So true! I have a music background myself (nothing near Jacob's level of course) and find myself needing to stop myself from overanalyzing, and just enjoy the brilliance of it from an emotional level. His interviews and educational/speaking engagements (many on UA-cam) are arguably as impressive as his music. He's a brilliant philosopher as well as artist.
Each and every one of the faces in the intro is a musician. Jacob requested several dozen musician friends to send him a file of themselves singing the word “Moon”. Among the faces are Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Chris Martin from Coldplay, David Crosby, members of Take 6, Jacob’s mom, etc. Jacob acknowledged this one song took over 1000 lines in ‘Logic’ to create. Jacob also does his own videography. Jacob admitted the final top note was, actually, sung by his sister.
How unbelievably lucky I am to have been born in this blessed era! We are living in the time of a true genius, the Mozart of our century: Jacob Collier. Every note he touches transcends human comprehension, every harmony he crafts redefines perfection. To witness his brilliance is to brush against eternity with every listen. I can only be in absolute awe of such a musical miracle!
So - JC just texted about 150 people in his phone (some more famous than others but you'll recognize a lot of them if you look close) and asked them to sing "moon" on a note on a Bb scale and then arranged them all to make that stellar opening. Yes it is Chris from CP. My favorote appearances are composer Eric Whitacre, GOAT jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, the best producer of all-time Quincy Jones (RIP) and David Crosby (RIP) from Crosby Stills and Nash. JC has an otherworldly connection to knowing the human capacity and connection to vibration - there may not be someone like him to walk the planet again for a while so we are very lucky to be alive to witness this.
I get it: mind blowing, gobsmacking, right? I love that you can pick up so much on the first listen. This is worth spending time, listening closely, but letting the music move you. He knows how to use his knowledge of music to bring you on an emotional journey. “Not normal, but perfect” is a great description of Jacob’s music!
OK, first of all, let's get the important thing out of the way first, YOUR REACTIONS ARE ADORABLE! Yes, we want to hear about all of those conflicting feelings! Next, yes, that was Chris Martin. Also in that opening section you can see people like Herbie Hancock, David Crosby, his mom Suzie (up and left at the very beginning), Steve Vai, and almost 150 other of his musician friends. The editor, it will probably not surprise you, is Jacob. LOL Finally, I'm not sure how much you would enjoy it, because it's somewhat technical, but Moon River is one of the songs for which there is a "LOGIC Session Breakdown" video, an hour a half long video where he breaks down every detail of the musical production of the song. Feel free to check that out. I'm so happy to see you getting such joy out of this journey.
@@TheRealMommaOG Speaking of LOGIC session breakdowns, if these interest you, Jacob just gave us a Christmas Gift, a brand new 2-hour combination master class and LOGIC breakdown for Little Blue (the album version), filmed at NY Public Library! It's on his channel!
Oh, I'm a classical musician and he's blowing my mind all the same. It's hard to compare because of all the technology we have today, but I don't think there was anyone as skilled as him in music. Ever
I am always thrilled to see a person witness and experience Jacob Collier's brilliance for the first time. I know you already reacted to a couple of his songs already, but this one really showcases more of the depths of his brilliance, and you had the same dumbfounded feeling I did once I heard Moon River too! By the way, when you said you want to credit the video editor, that would be none other than Jacob. He literally did it all at that time. Hard to fathom, I know :-) A little story here... I stumbled upon Jacob this past February when scouring UA-cam for videos of the masterful singer, Tori Kelly, who I had just discovered at that time. I came across a video of her as a guest singer for Jacob along with John Legend, doing a cover of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and then another video with her and Jacob on Jacob's own song, "Witness Me" live on on the Jimmy Kimmel show. I immediately went down the rabbit hole of Jacob's videos, and was completely and utterly blown away. Genius doesn't even scratch the surface of describing him. Well, I immediately looked up whether he was touring, and much to my incredible luck, he was set to play my home time of Philly in 2 weeks! So I immediately snatched up tickets. Now, I'm a 56 year-old lifelong music lover. I've been to many hundreds of concerts of all the greats, I'm a musician myself, I studied music in college, played in bands when I was younger, etc....but this was the best concert I'd have even been to, by far. I was rattled and inspired by the experience. So much so, I bought tickets to his Denver show coming a month later (my son lives out there, so we made it a family affair). This time, I bought a "meet & greet" upgrade. We get there, and we go right to the front row, center...we're like 8 feet from Jacob's piano. The meet & greet happened right before. There were about 30 people huddled in the front, and Jacob came out and just casually answered out questions for like an hour or so. He is the kindest, most down-to-earth, most brilliant human and philosopher I've ever encountered in my life. I got to ask him a question and had a wonderful dialog with him while he demonstrated his voice harmonizer instrument that he sorta invented. This conversation is thankfully all caught on video (my son filmed it - I'm the one talking with my hands LOL - the link is here: ua-cam.com/video/0gniC5v93Ts/v-deo.htmlsi=LnHyswXDyovxNECn As you'll see in the video, right after he and I get done talking, he answers a small child's question in the most inspirational and touching way. The concert after the meet and greet was the best musical experience of my life, and it wasn't even a close call. My word! Please continue down the Jacob Collier rabbit hole and post more reactions! I promise, you'll feel completely enriched. I would start with his oldest ones - the ones that got him started. He started posting videos to UA-cam as teenager singing all voices, playing all instruments, doing all mixing, video editing, etc. His cover of "Don't Worry 'Bout A Thing" by Stevie Wonder went viral, Quincy Jones noticed him, and the rest is history. Check out his "All Night Long" cover with Take 6 by Lionel Richie. Incredible video. And then just keep on watching all his vids on YT. Also, check out his educational and speaking engagements. He is brilliant beyond just music. I' just subscribed to your channel and sent a Venmo donation hoping to see more Jacob reactions. Have a great day and holiday season! 😄
Dude, THANK YOU, for posting that video and asking that question. That is probably the very best explanation and demonstration of the harmonizer that has ever been shown by him! The harmonizer has evolved and gotten a lot of upgrades from the original version that he and Ben invented all those years ago. All of the bending and effects stuff is relatively new, and I haven't seen a really in depth demo of all the things it can do now in the latest version! Again, THANK YOU!
WOW - what an amazing experience that must have been. Thank you for sharing that video! It's always amazing to encounter good humans amongst the celebrity world. I would say that Aurora is the same. Thank you so much for your donation - much appreciated. I guarantee there will be A LOT more Jacob to come on the channel! Happy Holidays to you and yours as well!
This was a phenomenally enjoyable reaction because it was so genuine. It's relatable. Even as a musician, this isn't something you can fully take in from one listen...
I'm searching for a word to describe this performance. So far the best I can do is, Stunning. There are, indeed, notes that do sound off but somehow right. Mind duly boggled. My compliments of the Season to yo and yours, thanks and best wishes for 2025.
One thing you might not notice explicitly, but could influence what you are hearing: since this song has no instruments, all keys he sings in are in true pitch/tuning. This is subtle, but you hear it just sounds better.
Among those appearing here, here are the some musicians he's collaborated on different songs who are all worth paying attention to in their own right: Eric Whitacre, Hans Zimmer, Steve Vai, Ty Dolla $ign, Charlie Puth, Tori Kelly, David Crosby (CSNY) , Chris Thile (another prodigy) , Daniel Caesar, Kimbra, MARO, Cory Henry, Dodie, Becca Stevens, Jamie Cullum, Michael League (of Snarky Puppy), Jonah Nilsson (Dirty Loops) , Chris Martin Coldplay), Clyde & Gracie Lawrence (of Lawrence the Band). Of course Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones, too.
I’ve listened to this so many times and it was delightful to see the confused cocktail of emotions as you listened. I know you’re an Elvis fan and Jacob does the most wonderful cover of can’t help falling in love. Merry Christmas and thanks for the reaction 😁
Yes, it's Chris Martin from Coldplay and 144 others including those musicians below. Jacob also does a killer version of "Fix You". Jacob did edit his own videos initially but not on this one which was farmed out to a software company named Light Sail VR that pushed their limits. By the way, this song is actually far more musically complex than what appears on screen since it uses shifting key centers, tuning systems and microtonality in keys that don't exist on a keyboard. Yes, that's why they call him the Mozart of Gen Z (although he's technically a Milleniul) Suzie Collier, Sophie Collier, Ella Collier, Ben Bloomberg, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Eric Whitacre, Hans Zimmer, Steve Vai, Ty Dolla $ign, Chris Martin, Charlie Puth, Lianne La Havas, Tori Kelly, David Crosby, Chris Thile, Daniel Caesar, Kimbra, Laura Mvula, MARO, Cory Henry, dodie, Becca Stevens, Jack Conte, Nataly Dawn, Oumou Sangare, Jules Buckley, Jamie Cullum, Tank, Beardyman, Genevieve Artadi, Sam Wilkes, Greg Phillinganes, Michael League, Hamid El Kasri, Avery Wilson, Jojo, Jonah Nilsson, Tom Misch, Darwin Deez, June Lee, Kathryn Tickell, Merrill Garbus, Nikki Yanofsky, Sam Amidon, Alvin Chea, Claude McKnight, Mark Kibble, Khristian Dentley, David Thomas, Joel Kibble, Andrea Haines, El Cockerham, Blake Morgan, Barney Smith, Chris Wardle, Jonathan Pacey, Rob Clark, Sam Dressel, Barak Schmool, Pedro Martins, Jake Sherman, Jonathan Dove, Brian Mayton, Fred Harris, Nicola Hadley, Steve Mulligan, Clyde Lawrence, Gracie Lawrence, Sumner Becker, Jordan Cohen, Thomas Gould, Gareth Lockrane, Gwilym Simcock, Jason Rebello, James Maddren, Nick Smart, Pete Churchill, Tom Cawley, Umar Hossain, Mischa Stevens, Jose Ortega, Claudio Somigli, Alessandro Melchior, Christian Euman, Rob Mullarkey, Adam Fell, Michael LaTorre, Michael Peha, James Wright, Noah Simon, Matthew Celia, Rocky Borders, Josh Helfferich, Robert Watts, Ewa Zbyszynska, Arend Liefkes, Jasper van Rosmalen, Murk Jiskoot, Ruben Margarita, Aleigha Durand, Allayna O'Quinn, André Smith, Asya Bookal, Briana Marshall, Catherina Lagredelle, Celine Sylvester, Chad Lupoe, Chesroleeysia B, Cleavon Davis, Cole Henry, Danielle Cornwall, Haley Flemons, Holland Sampson, Jason Max Ferdinand, Jourdan Bardo, JP Scavella, Kashaé Whyte, Keviez Wilson, Kobe Brown, Kristin Hall, Leonard Brown, Lincoln Liburd, Louis Cleare, Maia Foster, Malik George, Malik McHayle, Marissa Wright, Matthew Cordner, Mykel Inez, Naomi Parchment, Natrickie Louissaint, Patricia Williams, Roddley Point-du-Jour, Samella Carryl, Terell Francis-Clarke, Zaren Bennett
There’s no pressure to speak a certain way about him from me, any real fans and least of all Jacob himself - your honest reaction says it all and was most of us the first time we heard this one, it’s the one I sometimes don’t recommend until I get an idea if the person is up for this kind of rollercoaster/adventure haha If your in at this point, then you almost don’t need recommendations from us - but il tip in mine: His version of Close To You to get a feel for his ridiculous groove, his version of Bridge Over Troubled Water if you want another all-voice journey to space and his version of Fix You if you want to hear just him and the piano (and tear up with joy) One of my personal faves is his original ‘In The Real Early Morning’ done live with an orchestra at the BBC Proms for a mystical/epic storytelling experience ❤ Pick whatever you want though, your in good hands regardless 😊
There is an excellent harmonic analysis video of Jacob's "Moon River". It is almost as mind blowing as Jacob's song itself...ua-cam.com/video/UTDHylJZMXU/v-deo.htmlsi=14YTWwpJZVQ4iTQv
Yup!, very good. Very similar format to Lionel Richie's "All Night Long"( very upbeat and great piano). Moon River has aways been a favorite but still partial to the Andy Williams version. BTW, like your Pitt. Pirates glass in back ground. Pirates fan since age 8.
I spent 10 years experiencing and adding up his vast talents and innovations, and concluded he's one of the greatest musical minds in history.
If your brain hurts just go with the feelings!! He’s wonderful on so many levels.
