I put the challenge out there but doubt anyone with similar collections would put the effort in or be able to articulate such differences. Anyone?
I just bought SMC Takumar 28mm f3.5 and SMC Takumar 35mm f3.5 on Ebay. Can't wait till they arrive. And I bought a Helios 44 on my local flea market yesterday. I'm blown away by the Image!!!
I LOVE that you said the first thing you look for is CHARACTER!!! Spot on!!! I have the entire Super Takumar series... the 50 & 85 have that warm Cooke Look, the others don't.
Canon FD. I have a bunch of them from the 17mm f3.5 to the 70-200 f 4. They are awesome. I'm going to shoot a short with my BMPCC4K and these lenses. A bunch of testing is needed to see how they hold up.
I just purchased a 24mm 2.8, 35mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4 and a 100mm 2.8 for the BMPCC 4K and the 0.71X Speed Booster. Thank you very much for the inspiration. We will build a shoulderrig for «handheld» look, but also want to USE a Moza Air 2 and their follow focus system. Do you have any input as to whether the FD-lenses will work with the Moza Follow Focus system? Thanks and all the best from Vinstra, Norway
I can highly recommend the Canon 85mm 1.2L for a more compressed look. Works great with the metabones speedbooster. I bought it new back in 1984 and it is as sweet now as then. It is not as light and nimble as your suggestions but no heavier than the Sigma 18-35. Greetings from Gothenburg 🙏🏾
Takumar and Helios a great for video but photo too. I have nice portrait with helios. My new manual lens are kamlan 28mm f/1.4. For me its the best compromise without metabone. Realy nice lens and cheap
I love the Asahi Pentax Super Takumar lenses (M 42). There is also a 35mm f 1:2 (I got one). But I was blown away by the look of the 50mm f 1:1,4. There is a chinese focal reducer (Amazon), which works well (manually): Zhongyi Lens Turbo II. It`s a good solution to adapt M 42 lenses to MFT for about 150 EUR.
I just got my BMPCC4k. Coming from a C300. Which would you considering buying first a Panasonic Lumix 12-35mm or purchase the Metabones Speedbooster and stick with The canon 24-70 2.8 which I already own, along with the Zeiss 50 mm. Thanks
I have a lot of Canon glass. The metabones .64 has been working really well for me. No visible loss of sharpness. I have been using the 16-35 is, 24-105 is & 70-200 is. Also have numerous non-is which I use for tripod work.
I bought the Takumar 50mm and loved it so much I bought the 28mm and my 35mm is Contax Ziess. a little more expensive but it's going to be a GO-TO all purpose glass. Stll on the hunt for a great lens for Close-up shots 85mm options . any thoughts?/
My favorite lens for MFT is the Navitar 75mm f/1.3. Funny thing is, when I started out I wanted a 50mm, but I had an APS-C camera, so it ended up being a 75mm. The Navitar is a CCTV lens, so the image circle is equivalent to MFT (I think). Anyway I got it for 100 bucks and it's the sharpest lens I ever had my hands on. Incredible. Best flares as well. Chromatic aberrations can be a bit of a pain, but very rarely, and you should use an IR cut filter with Black Magic cameras anyway. I use it mostly on Olympus tho. I've seen Navitar zooms on eBay, 12-105mm f/2.5 cine-zoom for 300 bucks (!!!!!!) and if is as good as my prime, that gotta be the biggest steal in the industry, because I saw videos, and it IS truly parfocal :O You just have to make sure the lens had been calibrated and mounted for digital MFT sensors. But it's well worth the modification price. The Super Takumar looks awesome as well!
Glad you are back. The only lens I ever bought is a 'vintage' SLR lens. The widest I found for the adapter I own is 25mm f/2.5 but is much bigger than the native MFT lenses on the OG pocket. It might be an idea to adapt S16 cine lenses. But those are hard to get. But the full frame is just wasting glass with a dump adapter. By Pentax do you mean Pentax K? I think the photo store in the city has a complete set of K lenses for good prices. I won't buy any more lenses. The most used I got is a SLR kit lens 35-135 with macro mode as well.
Great advise - as always. The only vintage glass I use with the BMPCC4K is the Helios 44-2 - they are easy to get and quite cheap. But there's a lot of crap on the market - I had to buy three to get one in really good shape. I only use it once in a while, but then it is just amazing with it's crazy unique bokeh.
hi new here, may i know how to do you calculation? if i were to mount a 50mm 1.4 super takumar lenses on BMPCC 4k which is a 1.9 crop but if speed booster involve? what's the end focal be like
#eric You multiply the crop for the lens (here 1.9) by the crop for the speed booster (typically 0.72) which gives 1.368. A 50mm on a speed booster would have the field of view of a 68.4mm lens
What a great video man. I always enjoy your videos. I'm researching what lenses I can get for a bmpcc original. Taking a huge leap from shooting on my phone and on borrowed t4is to my own bmpcc. So far I have an elgeet 13mm f1.9. Now I need something in the 25 to 28mm, another 58mm and with a 7.5mm or an 8mm for wide angle stuff taking into account the crop factor. I'm getting vintage lenses first.
My favorite lens is a little hefty but I love the look. It’s my Canon 85mm f1.8 FD with the bayonet mount and only goes up to f16. After that it would have to be my Canon 50mm f1.8 FD bayonet mount. Just got that one a week ago and it gives me the same look as the 85 but a little wider. I will be shooting my next short film with just those 2 lenses.
What adapters are you using for these lenses?? I’m guessing speed boosters to get around the crop issues? Also, I get crazy flares coming through the glass when there’s a light like a street light while using adapted glass on my Sony a7r3. Like, the ugly kind of flares. Do you have to contend with these issues shooting on the bmpcc with adapted glass?
I seem to have some bad fixed pattern noise on my bmpcc4k from ISO 100 and below, its mostly due to underexposed shots but I don't know what to do since I've already done a black shading and it remains, have you had this issue? I also haven't seen anyone post about this issue so I'm wondering if this is camera specific
4:50 does f4 have the depth of field of f8 in full frame? I've read you have to multiply the depth of field by the crop factor when it comes to depth of field
Nice lenses, nice setup with the easyrig! did you ever tried the other sigma zoom 50-100mm? Thinking about getting this in addition to the 18-35mm for the pocket4k
This is not a vintage lens... But I got the SLR Magic 12mm from your recommendation. I had my first outdoor shoot with it this weekend. At the last minute I rushed to find a ND + IR + Pol filter for it. I was be able to find a 58mm IR/UV filter in time which work ok... I tried to get afterward 58mm to 72mm adaptor and put a ND filter but I get vignetting... I was going to be on a Moza Air 2 Gimbal, so I couldn't use my regular mattebox... I saw a few len attach mattebox, but they seem to only allow thin glass, and saw no filter in those specs... So I'm wondering what you are doing in those situation ?
Hmmm I get a lot of vignetting when using cheaper filters, especially variable ND ones. Trying to find a new one that doesn't have that much of a problem but most variable NDs seems to suffer from that
I quite often use Olympus OM lenses, which I own since film days. Also, I'd add that in M42 realm, aside of Takumars and russian lenses, there's a boat load of really great but cheap lenses from Pentacon, made in East Germany back in the day...
The problem is that a FD to EF adapter has additional glass to compensate for the longer flange distance. This extra glass can potentially affect the image.
which EF adapter ring are you using to get the lenses to work with a speedbooster? I have tried 3 different ones on my GH5 and it keep getting "lens adapter failed" error messages :(
I had the same issue, until I removed the digital contact on the adapter, then it went away. So a simple pocket knife will pop the little contact off the adapter and you will be in business.
@@Triple333Grow I'd rather not mess up my expensive metabones though. I still use sigma art lenses. Wouldn't taking out a contact of the speedbooster effect the performance of the electronic lenses?
Ryan Timms I had missed the part where you said Speedbooster, I was assuming you meant the cheap adapters like the m42 to M43 plate adapters can sometimes have metal contacts for smart lenses. In that case when you remove the contact it fixes the issue. I have never experienced an issue like this with my Metabones Ultra.
@@Triple333Grow Yeah I'm using an adapter that is metal but has no canon specific contacts. but on my GH5 it says adapter failed it blacks out my screen so I can't film with it. If I put tape over one of the pins inside the speedbooster It works. So I'm hoping if I found like a plastic m42 adapter or whatever then this wouldnt be an issue. Everything I've found online is metal.
Ryan Timms that’s strange, I have two that I use that are metal or aluminum. One is a normal cheap adapter and one is a rotating one for using anamorphic modded lenses.
Thanks for this information mate, I have my pocket 4k but no lenses yet, I seriously cannot decide! Hahaha (well, I have an 85mm rokinon adapted but the crop is hugeeee without a speed booster lol)
For me, that's really important. I shoot things that move quickly. I have used Canon for over 40 years. Although I have a collection of old glass from other manufacturers I keep returning to Canon for important work due to the focusing & zoom direction.
When you say 20-28mm do you mean 40-56mm equivalent? How do you focus? Do you set focus and just keep the same distance from the subject? Do you ever use autofocus on it?
For your next video can you take us through the menu. And maybe show us your settings when you shoot and why? Also can you tell us what you use in terms of memory; SD, SSD, CF. and how many gigs? Cheers!
Are you worried at all about using the M42 - EOS adapter because on the metabones website XL 0.64 products page says: "Some improperly-made M42 screw mount adapters may short the electronic contacts of the Speed Booster and cause damage to the Speed Booster and/or camera body." I have a lot of thses M42 mount lenses as well but I'm worried about trying them, even though my M42 - EOS adapter seems like a good and well made solid piece of metal, that I wouldn't have thought could do anything bad to the camera or the metabones. But the website for metabones clearly states it's not compatible -- have you heard of anyone having issues? You were not worried at all? Thanks a lot
I never use auto white balance because it’s just more difficult to correct in the grade when things move from temperature to temperature. Better to keep it consistent. You also don’t need auto on pocket because it shoots raw, you can just change that in post without any negative effect on the footage. The dream :)
Love this topic. I used to use Nikkor primes, and moved my way up to cine modded Leica R glass. LOVE the vintage look, or for me just natural. I really don't like the clinical look of moderns lenses. Even high-end lenses like CP2s for instance, look great, but lack a certain something for me. I've been using low strength filters from Schneider Optics recently, and loving it! Curious about ND filters. I don't have the means or the workflow to invest in drop-in filters with a matte box, but have had negative experiences in variable NDs in the past. Mostly due to the muddy green shift starting at the lowest setting and only becoming more pronounced when I increase the strength. But that was when I was shooting on a Sony A7ii, and I had issues with the greens in general on that camera. I think mine was a Tiffen, it wasn't cheap but wasn't expensive, maybe $150? Is there a variable ND filter you'd recommend or should I just invest in a set of 3? All of my lenses have the same thread diameter, so I don't mind spending a bit more if the quality is there. Any companies you'd recommend?
Thank you for this. I was thinking about whether I should invest in a few vintage lenses and BAM! You post this video 😁 Curious, have you ever tried the black pro mist filters on your other lenses (like the Sigma) to get softer characteristics?
The weight is not the problem and I heard that this lens is pretty sharp, only disadvantage is chromatic aberration but that’s not a big deal for me. I love those big lenses, I think they give such a professional look, what I like the most about them is the declicked aperture ring and the low light performance... in general I think to find a lens for the bmpcc 4K is pretty hard...
Rock Rockerson thanks i was gonna choose the 24mm anyway because I like the look, and yes with Davinci resolve you can remove chromatic aberration, so no big deal!
I looked up Marco Frost, and I do love his look. Unfortunately, I did not find any 'behind the scenes' type of videos to see what lenses he was using. I'm using a Nikon 20mm 2.8 on my Pocket 4k at the moment, and would love to find some older Nikon lenses that would match the look I'm getting.
I have a collection of old Nikkor/Nippon lenses. The non-ai mostly. Love the microcontrast of these lenses and they have the old school long throw like a proper cinema lens . At the moment we are using Nikon DSLRs. We are wanting to move towards the Pocket 4K Cameras or the Nikon Z6 . We have had much debate on this within our company. I did just watch a video on a guy saying the BlackMagic Cameras having a reddish tint to them and especially noticeable in the blacks . He shot a live music show and he couldn’t get the red out of the skin tones. He also shot with two other cameras and didn’t have this red problem at the live show . What is your take on this with you shooting and owning BlackMagic. Thanks so much
Just received a makinnon 28mm It's max focus distance is like 10 cm... Why could that be? Using BMPCC4K with Viltrox .71x adapter and PK-EF adapter ring
Do you ever use the Pocket on a rig without stabilization mechanisms built in and with the types of lenses you just showed us? Maybe it's just practise, but I worry sometimes, that using the Pocket "bare hands" or on, say a shoulder rig, is hard to stabilize. As always, great content!
But the Super Takumar are m42 mount as well. It first got me confused because I believe the bmpcc has a micro four thirds lens mount (like the Panasonic). Am I wrong? @@SignLanguageResources
Old Contax and Leica lenses although more expensive are really amazing and much faster. The only problem with Takamur's and a lot of vintage lenses is the terrible CA they can produce like in you example clips at the end, the border around the windows had a lot of CA (Color fringing).
I picked up the SMC Takumar 35mm 3.5 but found it isn’t very pleasing image wise. Wonder if anyone else had this experience? Mine adds contrast, which on MFT I feel I’m always attending to making sure my shadows are properly exposed to avoid adding noise. I find this lens darkens the shadows and so if I then try to lift them, there’s added noise there. Other thing I feel it does is add a magenta cast. Which, on my GX85 (admittedly a baby of a camera compared to bmpcc) is exactly what I don’t want. I already think the Panasonic cameras are strange with magenta, most visibly so in skin tones. The SMC Takumar seems to exaggerate this downside. Anyone else navigate this with the takumars? Hope this helps someone else when considering these lenses with Lumix cameras. For me, vintage Nikon lenses like the AIS 24 and 50mms have more character and better color reproduction. Though they are softer in general, it’s a very pleasing and filmic softness.
Did you know "Jack Sparrow " from the movie Pirates of the Caribbean:of course you know him your actions is just like him hhhhahahaha whenever i watch your video am think jack Sparrow is talk to me and teach me something lol Excellent stuff on your channel
You should look at some of the Pentax lenses. I have 2 of the 3 limited edition lenses (three amigos) which are all f1.8. They are very popular in the Pentax community and if you research them you will see why. They are very compact and I love what Ive seen so far having paired them with my BMP4K.
I am often use a Rehouse full prime lomo kit for 35mm movie originally with oct18 Mount. Is a damn small and light kit, I Rehouse mine in HK. Someone also did a 3D printable oct18 to EF mount adapter that works surprising good : www.thingiverse.com/thing:2115069
Great video! I will have to try the tip of adjusting close focus on the Mir1b. Not sure if you know but you can also flip the front optic on the Mir1b and it creates a cool tear drop type of bokeh with a very narrow focus area in a center circle area. Here is a music video I shot with a Mir1b with a flipped front optic ua-cam.com/video/fXR_EIgpaGA/v-deo.html Keep up the great work!
Only SOME Takumars have thoriated glass - 35mm f2 not f3.5 for instance and none of these. The lenses that ARE thoriated release a very small amount of alpha particles but also have an incredible refractive index making amazing lenses with low chromatic aberrations. Are they dangerous? No: a "radioactive" lens that contains thorium will give off approximately 0.01 millirem (mrem) per hour. By comparison, a chest X-Ray gives you 1,000x that dose in a single shot (about 10 mrem). That means it would take you 167 days of using the lens for 6 hours per day before you've exposed yourself to a single X-Ray's worth of radiation. That means in order to get a lethal exposure of radiation you'd need to be within 3 feet of 3,000,000 lenses for 6 hours. If that's not comforting enough, consider this: according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, you receive about 310 mrem of radiation per year from natural background radiation. Just living on Earth is more 'dangerous' than these lenses. Do you use a microwave? A cell phone? Have a smoke detector? All of these expose you to more radiation than one of these lenses so saying they're dangerous is just silly - and wrong. They didn't stop making them because of danger to the user, but because the methodology of making them was dangerous to the manufacturer, which theyve finally figured out how to get around: Thorium tetrafluoride is used as an antireflection material in multilayered optical coatings. It is transparent to electromagnetic waves having wavelengths in the range of 0.35-12 µm, a range that includes near ultraviolet, visible and mid infrared light. Its radiation is also primarily due to alpha particles, which can be easily stopped by a thin cover layer of another material. Replacements for thorium tetrafluoride are being developed as of the 2010.

I really like the Konica 2.8 35mm, the Zeiss Planar f2.0 45mm and also the Nikkor 135mm 2.8 ai.
I like Photos poems so the poetry factor makes a big difference to me
GAHHH I took your advice and bought makinon lens off eBay but it does fit the bmpcc4K-did I do something wrong?
I seem to have some bad fixed pattern noise on my bmpcc4k from ISO 100 and below, its mostly due to underexposed shots but I don't know what to do since I've already done a black shading and it remains, have you had this issue? I also haven't seen anyone post about this issue so I'm wondering if this is camera specific
May I ask what mount do yo use for the Makinon? I just got one and would like to try it with BMPCC
i like the Andycine a6 monitor with sony Np-F batteries that power monitor and camera.
If using Canon FD lenses, do you recommend the .64 speedbooster with a FD to EF adapter?
The problem is that a FD to EF adapter has additional glass to compensate for the longer flange distance. This extra glass can potentially affect the image.
What about radioactive lenses super takomar. Have you heard that?
which EF adapter ring are you using to get the lenses to work with a speedbooster?
Where do you get these lenses from? Most of them are old as far as I know. Ebay or somewhere else?
wheres the battery link
How about giving us a link to your friends film that he shot with the old bmpcc and vintage lenses? Thanks
ua-cam.com/video/OP0N8iksqAU/v-deo.html here u go
do you feel sometimes confused while pentax lens focus ring goes different direction than such as sigma 18-35 or the canon ways?
Cheers!
Are you worried at all about using the M42 - EOS adapter because on the metabones website XL 0.64 products page says:
"Some improperly-made M42 screw mount adapters may short the electronic contacts of the Speed Booster and cause damage to the Speed Booster and/or camera body."
I have a lot of thses M42 mount lenses as well but I'm worried about trying them, even though my M42 - EOS adapter seems like a good and well made solid piece of metal, that I wouldn't have thought could do anything bad to the camera or the metabones.
But the website for metabones clearly states it's not compatible
-- have you heard of anyone having issues? You were not worried at all? Thanks a lot
Bmpcc4k doesn't have auto white balance does it? So you would have to do the white balance everytime you change rooms?
Michael Morales www.amazon.com/PolarPro-82mm-Variable-Filter-Stop/dp/B07Q3T16M9
Thank you for this. I was thinking about whether I should invest in a few vintage lenses and BAM! You post this video 😁
Curious, have you ever tried the black pro mist filters on your other lenses (like the Sigma) to get softer characteristics?
What do you guys think about the Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine DS lens? I'm still not sure which lens to buy for the bmpcc 4k...
Too big, too heavy, too soft and CA wide open, less character, overall ok but if you do not need speed go for vintage lenses 2.8 or 3.5
The weight is not the problem and I heard that this lens is pretty sharp, only disadvantage is chromatic aberration but that’s not a big deal for me. I love those big lenses, I think they give such a professional look, what I like the most about them is the declicked aperture ring and the low light performance... in general I think to find a lens for the bmpcc 4K is pretty hard...
@@JacobDoehnerOfficial Those Samyangs are amazing and sharp wide open, don't know what that guy is talking about. You can't go wrong with them
Rock Rockerson thanks i was gonna choose the 24mm anyway because I like the look, and yes with Davinci resolve you can remove chromatic aberration, so no big deal!
Would these lenses work on the BMPCC 6k? full frame No?
I looked up Marco Frost, and I do love his look. Unfortunately, I did not find any 'behind the scenes' type of videos to see what lenses he was using. I'm using a Nikon 20mm 2.8 on my Pocket 4k at the moment, and would love to find some older Nikon lenses that would match the look I'm getting.
try this at about 24m ua-cam.com/video/ybrfJK1gk1c/v-deo.html Drew talks about the classic (best Nikor lenses) This is a great set to have!
Which speedbooster do you recommend?
I like the xl ultra one because I use vintage full frame. But it does vignette on the widest on the sigma 18-35.
I get drop frame while shooting on Weise Cfast card 256 GB also the BMPCC 4K heats up. any advice.thnx
Thanks so much
thx. how about the OLYMPUS 12-100 F4 ?
Contax Zeiss Vintage Lenses!
Just received a makinnon 28mm
It's max focus distance is like 10 cm... Why could that be? Using BMPCC4K with Viltrox .71x adapter and PK-EF adapter ring
@@beingyourself6813 manual focus. Also, this lens was dead.
Whats the name of the cinematographer you referrer to using the old Canon lenses? Great summary of the more vintage options!
Macro Frost is a director so he’s using various DPs but check out his film too beautiful which is shot on the old pocket
@@Jonnyvonwallstrom MACEO Frost! It took a while to work out his name is Maceo, not Macro, haha
Can someone let me know how to adapt these lenses to a speed booster he mentions Ef ring?
What you think of the mods that ironglassadapters.com/ does to these vintage lenses?
every respected bmpcc4k owner have bought that smallrig half cage (me too :D)
great,,,,,,,
Do you ever use the Pocket on a rig without stabilization mechanisms built in and with the types of lenses you just showed us? Maybe it's just practise, but I worry sometimes, that using the Pocket "bare hands" or on, say a shoulder rig, is hard to stabilize. As always, great content!
Everything in the end is handheld without stabilization :) just camera and monitor on top
Mate, great video! I think you confused m42 with m43. Cheers!
I have helio and super takumar 50 mm I want 24mm
Leica R or Contax Zeiss
that rig which is perfect to crash with a toilet door.
Mamiya Sekor 50mm f2

You should look at some of the Pentax lenses. I have 2 of the 3 limited edition lenses (three amigos) which are all f1.8. They are very popular in the Pentax community and if you research them you will see why. They are very compact and I love what Ive seen so far having paired them with my BMP4K.
I am often use a Rehouse full prime lomo kit for 35mm movie originally with oct18 Mount. Is a damn small and light kit, I Rehouse mine in HK.
Someone also did a 3D printable oct18 to EF mount adapter that works surprising good :

Great video! I will have to try the tip of adjusting close focus on the Mir1b. Not sure if you know but you can also flip the front optic on the Mir1b and it creates a cool tear drop type of bokeh with a very narrow focus area in a center circle area. Here is a music video I shot with a Mir1b with a flipped front optic
ua-cam.com/video/fXR_EIgpaGA/v-deo.html
Keep up the great work!
How do you flip the front optic?
Micro 4/3? I thought it was a 4/3 not a micro 4/3.
Takuma lens are radioactive!
Canon FT, 50mm radioactive... not for me here in Japan, I don’t want more radiation around.
