This video was really comforting to see. I shoot on a vintage Nikkor glass set (24-180mm) from the 1960-70's almost exclusively, my 105mm being my favorite portrait lens of all time. The lenses were my dad's when he was in college and as I started out at MICA, he gave them to me. Currently I'm shooting with the lenses on a ZCam E2 with a Metabones M4/3-F mount adapter, with an added Black Promist 1 when I need a dramatic highlight blur.
Hey Spenser, is that 24mm FD you have the one with the S.S.C written on it or is that the later iteration of it that does not have that written on it ?
Late to the party but I’ve been shooting video with a GH2 paired with a 35-70mm Canon FD and a 16D anamorphic. I love the look and feel of this combination although I have to zoom in completely for the image to fill the sensor therefore the 85mm prime is the more practical choice. I have a few video examples that i shot using the setup mentioned on my UA-cam page if you wanna check them out...
Seriously loving all these videos. This channel is still the most slept on channel I watch but mark my words this shit is going to BLOW UP! Great job as always Spenser!
Currently building my own FD cine set aswell. I have the 24mm f2, 35mm f2 and the 50mm 1.4 is on it's way right now. Next up will be the 85mm 1.8 and perhaps also the 17mm f4. Have been using the 3D printed EF-mount you mentioned in the video. Love the FD vintage look.

And they're all primes, which have themselves a very different look to them than zoom lenses. Not something for your everyday work, but for the right occasion, they're the cherry on the cake.

Vivitar made some great lenses too! If the 1.4 and 1.2 lenses are too expensive, there are plenty of comparable Vivitar copies. They're just not as fast, but lenses in the f1.8 to f3.5 range are very useable for photos and video. My favorite lens of all time is the Tokina (under Vivitar) 35-105mm f3.5. It has this amazing macro ring that lets you dial in your macro focus and it only cost me 40 bucks.

Or hey, maybe the latter would actually be worth more for then it wouldn't have to be converted! Thanks for going into so much detail here.
I would add that many lenses need some kind of additional friction if you de click them to avoid the aperture moving around. You can use a small amount of lithium grease but other lenses need an actual shim or they will really slide all over the place. Also your wobble on the 24mm is due to the nylon spacer rings degrading. You can get them replaced and it will stop.
Very cogent and valuable video as everything you discussed matches my own finding over many years now... I use 50-year-old (or more) Takumar M-42 (pre-Honywell) optics for exactly the reasons you mentioned. It is funny the old Canon AE1 was a mark in the sand being the first of the cheaper plastic Canon cameras (and from there on) but with an older metal lens (even at the time) making it a 60-year old lens too. I really liked the follow-focus gears you showed but at $160 each, they are a bit pricy notwithstanding that I have a 10-lens collection.

But it would be super nice option to have and I'm sure welcomed by almost everyone that loves BMD.
Hey, great job with your videos . I watch them regularly and have learned lots from you. But I need to ask... what's the track played at the end of this video? I really like it
Noob comment/question. I have a GH4 and bought a couple of Canon FD's. The adapter I got was only about $10 and has an aperture ring that is already unclicked. Would this not be the ideal method, or am I missing something? Either way, great video. Love your channel, and I greatly appreciate seeing a professional who uses similar cameras and lenses. I'm using vintage lenses on mine. I use a m42 to EF adapter then take that and use a speed booster. You need to convert a lot of older lenses to EF before you hook it to your adapter on the camera.
cool video. I didn't know about the shape ways thing. I may have to try that out. Just a note though, the regular 55 1.2 is still pretty cheap on eBay, but if you actually look for the aspherical version, the price is significantly more. Ive read the 24, 55, and 85 aspherical were the ones the k35s were similar to...and all of those are pretty expensive to buy. of course less than a k35 and still a good investment, just saying. Vintage lenses are the shiz tho. Love them
Yea I was a little confused too caus he's talking about the cheap $2-300 FDs, but he's holding an aspherical one. If only they were as easy to find / cheap!
Hey, would the flange distance allow these lenses to be used, with the mount, on a BMPCC 6K EF mount? and what about the aperture control? Also, does it make a difference if the lens is FD FDn or FL ? Or would it work with all variants? Cheers!! GREAT VIDEOS!
Thanks for such a great video! When you talk about the 55mm you specifically mention "Aspherical" and I'm seeing on ebay there a some 55mm lenses that are labeled "Aspherical" in the $2k-$4k range. Is this the lens you have and are suggesting is most like the k35 or are the ones that aren't marked "Aspherical" similar to the k35's as well? Thanks so much!

I think they will have to because they're running out of things to upgrade anyway. But of course the standard answer is that it's a cinema camera and the Arri doesn't have it...blah, blah, blah. But it would be super nice option to have and I'm sure welcomed by almost everyone that loves BMD.

Awesome vid!
Do you have a video on how to remove diaphragm steps?
You mention that the 50mm is best for full frame. What is best for Micro 4/3?
Hey, great job with your videos . I watch them regularly and have learned lots from you. But I need to ask... what's the track played at the end of this video? I really like it
With the Canon FD lenses, do you need a Metabones Speed Booster to use them on the BMPCC 4K?
Yes need chance to ef mount
@@yuanhaozhuo2642 "need chance to ef mount"? What do you mean by chance?
fd to ef and use speed booster xl0.64
@@yuanhaozhuo2642 doesn’t the pocket 4K have a MFT mount?
Noob comment/question. I have a GH4 and bought a couple of Canon FD's. The adapter I got was only about $10 and has an aperture ring that is already unclicked. Would this not be the ideal method, or am I missing something?
Either way, great video. Love your channel, and I greatly appreciate seeing a professional who uses similar cameras and lenses. Thank you Spenser!!
I love vintage glass I have some Olympus OM lenses which look great.
Get Voigtlanders they couple strong poetic character with high sharpness. Closet thing to a Leica cine lens look.
I love my 28mm f2.8 and 50mmf1.8. really Bloom
Nice review, sounds great and the quality at the end of the video looked very nice! Im new to all of this and need some help.
For the Blackmagic 4K wich lens of these would you recommend for some high quality cinematic nature videos? And also is there an adapter needed or will the lens fit directly?
I am getting some vintage minolta in my neck of the woods : 28 / 35 / 50 a 35-70mm and a 58mm. I have a dumb adaptor and a speedbooster to use on my GH5. Are there any benefits getting FD lenses SSC vs the Minolta?
All lenses look different. Its just preference.
@@spensersakurai hi! Yes. Just wondering if their sharpness, bokeh, color rendition... Are miles apart that adding FD SSC makes sense or if the Minolta are good enough
Bro you’ve got so many useful friends... 3D printer friend, friend that bought a 7inch monitor and wants to trade for smaller one, friend that wants to swap lenses, friend thats me not me 😩
From my understanding, I just can buy a meta adapter for the BMPCC, I’ll be good to go?
What FDs you recommend for the mft bmcc 2.5k
Thanks for such a great video! When you talk about the 55mm you specifically mention "Aspherical" and I'm seeing on ebay there a some 55mm lenses that are labeled "Aspherical" in the $2k-$4k range. Is this the lens you have and are suggesting is most like the k35 or are the ones that aren't marked "Aspherical" similar to the k35's as well? Thanks so much!
Hi! I am smitten by your set up. As a beginner I went ahead and ordered all of this and I can’t seem to get the lens to attach to my darn camera. Do you offer any type of classes on this? I’m lost.
You need to convert the lenses to EF. Or use an adapter for mirrorless cameras
Thanks. I purchased this: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007YPVVES/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - was I wrong to do so?
Could you help me out... I have a canon eos r along with the ef mount. I REALLY want the 55mm 1.4, but not sure what/or how to do the adapter that you explained. I have to physically disassemble the lens? Or is there an easier way?!
There is not an easier way. Sorry. Unless you can find a R to FD adapter instead.
I like the way you think my guy
So how do you stabilize them?
I saw your new video, sorry for my poor English, the Canon FD lenses on BMPCC4K are a fairy tale, I do not find them very far from my Cine Canon lenses, a question where you find the soft rings for follow Focus adaptable to the lenses FD ??
Is it possible to have a reference site ??
Thanks for your work, vintage lenses will soon become a must!
Greetings from Italy
Simone
Check my description
Is it possible to mount them with a normal adapter to an Bmpcc 6k?
No, not ideally. the fd glass has a weird flange distance so all adapters make you lose infinity focus or soften the image with cheap glass.
Spenser Sakurai Okay, thanks for answering!
What speakers are in your room ?
any recommendations for vintage ultrawides?
Nice video, man. I'm a film photographer and an aspiring cinematographer, so I can appreciate this topic. I have some Minolta lenses that I'm going to be adapting to my BMCC. What do you think about old Vivitar lenses? Are they any good? I have a telephoto one laying around that I may use on future projects.
Meh. The vivitar aren’t something I’d recommend. They were the budget friendly lenses when they came out and I don’t think you’ll like the look.
@@spensersakurai ok, thanks!
