@@LightningCayo Not entirely Sigma but also Wily's plan. Essentially Sigma found contact with Wily's spirit and he told Sigma the plan to destroy Earth is to make Zero his supposed true self. So the plan was to release the Sigma Virus all over Earth, and have it mix with the specialized virus in the space colony. And if that succeeded, the Zero virus (And Awakened Zero) is created and the world ends.
In my head cannon, the true ending is a mix of both endings because I really like awaken zero and Willy implications but with X remembering and keeping Z-saber
@Arr325 You are not alone in this. I legit would advocate for both endings to be combined in a fan remake. If I could program and mod the base game I would in heartbeat. Lol Zero going Maverick was already foreshadowed in previous games. The writing team in X5 dropped the ball here as the fight vs Maverick Zero has more at stake and urgency (not to mention sadness). My headcanon would either lose Zero temporarily in first half of the Virus stages OR let the players control a powered up Zero with different stage layouts and bosses (which would have more references to past games). Then the game would proceed as normal with the two endings.
I seriously wish their encounter here was canon. Imagine this end up uncovering buried history from the classic era and revealing Wily's digital data presence. Even X could tell that something more sinister than Sigma lie within Zero at that point. It could've even introduced another big baddie than just Sigma to defeat. Which it sucks that Wily hasnt been hinted at after X6.

This fight you have to settle down in 2 minutes or Zero will use Genmu Zero to kill you instantly.

Even though this is the bad ending, it's the only route where the fight between X and Zero doesn't seem pointless
