- Mega Man X5: Improvement project Addendum
This is an addendum to the Mega Man X5 Improvement Project by DarkSamus993.
It started in 2019 as a restoration of graphics, songs and voice clips from the japanese version and unused soundtrack. In 2021, development resumed with the inclusion of a retranslated script and several new features. The amount of work put on this is now comparable to what's been done in X6 Tweaks. And even though there isn't (and there won't be) a patching tool.
- Parts Unlocking:
No need to waste "hours". All available in a single playthrough.
- Get Life Up/Energy Up at any level
- Get Life Up+/Energy Up+ (Parts) at any level
- Get both Parts regardless of Life Up+/Energy Up+ selection.
- Enigma/Shuttle RNG exceptions:
- Enigma/Shuttle launch with no parts will always fail.
- Shuttle launch with all 4 parts will always succeed.
- Stage modifications:
- Tidal Whale's Stage: Auto-scrolling segments run faster (100-125% horizontally, 150% horizontally).
- Tidal Whale's Stage: U-5555 (mini boss): smaller health bar (75%), but deals more damage (about 150% each attack).
- Dark Necrobat's Stage: slowdown gimmick removed
- Zero Space 1: the inner walls in the laser segments are now not grabbable
- Incomplete Armors:
- Armors can now be selected as soon as you get a part for it. While incomplete, they'll be displayed as unarmored X with a custom palette (see details below)
- Gameplay:
- Dark Hold: can be cancelled.
- F-Splasher behaves like a regular air dash (can be cancelled)
- W-Shredder: input changed to Dash + Special
- Disabled double tap dash input
- Falcon Armor: gets a custom air dash with the same properties as the "free move" flight.
- Gaea Armor: can slide down walls by pressing down. Dash speed penalty removed.
- Rebalancing:
- Gaea Armor: buster damage against common enemies increased.
- Z-Saber: damage against main bosses decreased.
- Z-Buster: startup delay sligthly reduced.
- Longer/harder "X vs. Zero" fight (damage tables reduced)
- QoL:
- Alia's hints can be turned off from the options menu
- Cutscenes and dialogues skip by pressing START
- Cheat Code to unlock Ultimate Armor will keep the Fourth Armor selectable
- Cheat Codes to unlock Ultimate Armor and Black Zero can be combined
- Faster pause menu transitions
- Exit Button always available, can be used to skip intro stage

It's quite satisfying to be able to 100% complete Megaman X5 with just Zero (since it feels like a rather incomplete experience in the original to have to use X in the same gameplay to get everything). The work seems to me impeccable and quite clean. The Megaman community is definitely amazing. Amazing work as always, and out of curiosity, do you plan to upload videos completing the Megaman Zero/ZX legacy collection Z Chaser challenge?

I feel like this is one of those flaws that X5 has that kind of hinders it.
Even X6 allows you to run the whole game with Zero (once you obtain him).

@@nuruddinshah684 I personally felt the actual fight between X and Zero was not done enough justice in gameplay.
Weaknesses felt lackluster. Hitting the boss with one gives you no actual advantage or damage.
Part collecting for the Enigma/Shuttle doesn't really add much to note in gameplay, besides for maybe speedruns.
Lack of polish in some stages. I hate the laser castle stage one that also comes with Black Devil as a boss especially.
Besides that X5 is decent good fun.
After I watch this video I learn:
1. Spike instant death negated when time stop
2. I can push boxes once zero get Tidal Whale DNA
3. Zero Shadow from Axel The red DNA can destroy wall on Vampire bat map for X armor
4. Can destroy Wood platform with Squid Adler Electro Sword on Dr. Firefly boss map
5. Zero special attack (Dr. Firefly DNA) can open wooden wall on Tidal Whale map for X armor

I literally watched the X run you did just yesterday and thought to myself, "Did this person do a full game with only Zero too?" You planned ahead like you were repairing a laser cannon and boy oh boy is that cool of you, and especially since the impact it made was not jeopardizing Earth. Nice work and thank you for doing X5 with this patch not just once, but at least twice! I'm glad to see someone who fulfilled one of my childhood dreams and then some!
I deeply admire the hard work put into improving the original flawed X5, and I don’t want to sound ungrateful towards the one(s) behind this labor of love.
However the bosses of this game really need sound effects for their movements and attacks. They still feel like they’re in a beta stage with how quiet they are.
Go to your whatever program(s) controls your sound ( or get one ) and turn on Loudness Equalization that should help, turn up your bass and treble and maybe even mess with the EQ bars and add some reverb and stuff and you can make anything sound better. I do it all the time when I'm listening to youtube musicians on here who i like the playing of but don't like the tone of their instruments or the way they mixed the audio.

It's a cool submarine, but it doesn't hide itself while it repairs itself. Cool, not so cool that it's absolute Zero, though.

i am actually quite impressed with the original X5, i think its a very sophisticated take on the X formula: lots of different routes depending on your own deliberate planning or even a lethal dose of RNG, the collision timer sells the plot pretty dang hard, the music is BANGING, every level is unique...though i totally understand the gripes: perhaps the game is over-designed, and Alia's dialogue should be skippable, and so on.
all in all, i really like the game.
(as for alia's text i just toggle the trigger buttons, makes it go by pretty fast and its light on the hands)

I bet you loved/would love the Zero series for the handhelds ( was re-released on the Switch as well fyi as a full compilation for like 19 bucks i think ). They play a lot more like the Metroid/Castlevania franchises where each level is contiguous to the area next to it. The 4th game in the series ( i think ) started putting is a fucking maze. The storyline of the whole Zero series is prty weird too lol. All new badguys and such

Yes you can with this mod. You can even reach all armor parts without having to replay any of the stages.

@@JinChristian I remember in X4 during certain dialogues you can see the armor equipped on X depends whether you picked up the body and helmet parts I know they brought it back in X6 but still liked in 4 better.

@@gd3air2 in X2 if you collect all of zero's parts from the hunters during the final stage of the game sigma will create a zero copy with black armor with a red gem in the helmet the original zero will arrive and kill the copy that's where the alternate color for zero came from only difference is he keeps the blue gem instead of red when you do the code

It's also kinda funny; X6 basically seems to mix all of the X5 endings, so it matters less overall
X7 has a plot, but it's basically so dumb that it seems confusing and then the gameplay gives you cancerous growths with prolonged exposure. Besides, vigilantes competing with the Maverick Hunters for Axl when it's about Sigma being a stinky man again, there's not really much else to do, and you really play as the main character for the last quarter of the game. Oy vey...
@@eckitronix X5 good ending takes place years after the death of zero, X6 takes place months after the death of zero according to gate. Basically X6 takes place before the good ending of X5. Red wants Axl back because Sigma has his friends hostage with the sigma virus. It was shown in one of the cut-scenes.

Does the addendum change how zero reacts to the virus? Is there a reason why you avoided the zero virus phantoms even though normally the virus makes zero invincible rather than hurting him?

@@yee6870 Yup, while Zero gets a temporary buff and X a nerf, you hunter rank is decreased and apparently repeated Virus stat with Zero makes the Shuttle RNG success rate being close to 0% (this Shuttle RNG situation I cannot tell you if it's true as I never really bothered to have Zero enter Virus state like 10+ times that is apparenlty requiered for happen, and even so, in the normal unpatched Ps1 game there are ways to manipulate the RNG to make that stuff irrelevant anyway, Ps2 and Legacy Collecton versions are harder to manipulate the RNG because the stuff used on the Ps1 to do that doesn't work in those versions).

After all these years, I still hate that damn devil on the first Sigma stage. Zero makes it look easy, but as X it's a pain.
As Zero it's not easy either, It's a pain, especially when the boss keeps having its eyes on places zero can't reach.

How did you walk on spikes in volt kraken's stage?
Tips : Every boss skills that he use to get armor parts ,stopping time then walk on spikes and push black boxes doenst use in original version lol.

Can anybody help me? I don't understand how to open these files? I don't know what format they are in or how to open it or how to use the patch. Should I download the game in another way? Do I have to emulate it in some special way? I downloaded the files from the main page but I am lost, I don't understand anything I don't know how to make this work or how or how to open the game. On one hand, I love the platforming you can do with zeros zsabre tech
On the other, bosses die nearly instantly to zsabre tech removing some of the entertainment value

how do I modify the HEX data? the instructions aren't crystal clear so I don't know how to add the "Always get both life up and energy up upgrades" modification into the game

This game was my jam, I played this before X2-4. If I remember correctly the virus made Zero stronger but didn't it change the games ending? I don't remember honestly.

what emulator you used? I use PSXfin but it always stop at the second boss selection
You might need to turn off the dynamic recompiler, I had a similar issue using PCSX-ReARMed on RetroArch where whenever I left certain stages the emulator would crash. MMX5 and MMX6 seem to have a fit whenever the dynarec is on.

wait, slowdown "gimmick"? i always, since i was a little kid, thought Dark Necrobat's stage went slower at those parts because the game was lagging. you mean they just intentionally made it that way??? oh my goodness.
As much as the game is half baked its lore is the only one in the whole X series to make sense. Zero isn't simply the source of the virus but the hardware the virus depend on. As Zero get stronger the virus also do. This was Wily's intention I guess. It isn't about destruction but unity though by destroying everything else. During their first fight Sigma somehow got fused with the program becoming the will of it. Zero is incomplete without the virus but the closer he gets to it the more powerful he become without losing to it. Actually the opposite, he lost himself when the virus got separated creating the Zero who befriended X. The whole X5 feels like the X series happens not long after the classic Mega Man, something like five years and both Light and Wily are actually alive somewhere and I'm sure Sigma's doing isn't to the liking of Wily. Sagesse in this case isn't Wily but just some kind of avatar he wanted to use to fix this problem but eventually got affected by the virus. Doppler very much can be the same to Light.
The series really should have ended with X5, everything after is a bit fucked up with all the forced tragedies and pointless deaths including the Zero series. X8 somehow makes sense because of Lumine, a robot that is simply advanced and that's it. He want a new world by creating something and not just modifying the already existing ones.

It's Saber Dash Canceling. SDC for short. You spam attack and dash in a way that cancels out the time it takes to attack, allowing Zero to basically melt bosses with it.

I’ve played this game so many times and I’m still learning thing I never knew by watching your game play! Also I always felt the castle stages had the laziest level design out of the whole series.. This game would have been so much better in 16 - bit.

I would agree with you if they actually made X the main character of his own series, however, as things are right now, Zero is just a dumb character thrown in instead of actually the main character growing or becoming stronger.
Remember when X was actually the main character of his series in X1 to X3? When he actually grows stronger and has more power than Zero?
X is "less interesting" because Inafune couldn't be bothered to actually flesh out X, a case of lazy writing and blatant character killing.
@@razi_man No. X had his story in the snes games. That is a fact. However, he was written to be simple and there is nothing wrong with that. This isn't shakespeare and the character writing does not need to be complex to be fun and engaging. X's story is done so the idea that he had to be fleshed out even further is just unnecessary for the stories that he is a part of. Zero isn't randomly thrown in. It makes sense for him to get fleshed out now that X has become a commander as stated in X4. After Zero was fleshed out after X4 and 5 it makes sense to focus on a new character like Axl. It's basic writing 101 dude. If the only character that gets fleshed out is X then the characters around him would be boring. Why do you think the OVA focused on X AND Sigma? Why do you think X6 focused on Gate AND Alia? Everyone likes having characters fleshed out because it's fun even if it's not complex or deep. X is my favorite character in the series and I don't need his character development to drag on for more than 3 games. He is now a pro hunter and continues to save humanity from evil and that's all you need from a simple character. This isn't Metal Gear Solid levels of complexity nor does it have to, especially if the writer never intended it to be. Mega Man is edgy not complex and that's why we like it. After Axl gets his story finished, I fully expect a new 4th character to get fleshed out because that's how you write fun stories! You don't linger on one guy!
In case someone responds to my comment. No, the story nor characters do not need to be complex to be "good." Such a mind set is hypocritical because I'm sure you have favorites games and characters that are not super deep but you still think they are amazing.
I encourage ppl to not be so cynical because all you are doing is hurting your own engagement with the products for the sake of "criticism." I say that word in quotation because criticism is supposed to help, but you can't help X by making him undergo forced development for the sake of development. That's not good writing! X's story is done after X3, Zero after X5 and Axl after X9 maybe. The idea that X isn't the main character is just cynical talking points. Developed Main characters don't have to be in the spotlight especially if there are other characters that could still be explored. X and Zero are amazing characters who serve their purposes. Read a book about writing please. Or else you'll have the Naruto problem, where most of the side characters went unexplored.

So saying X's had developed his whole story arc throughout three installments is just dumb. Specially when said installments are SNES games, and not only that but X1 is the only game where there's "some" development tied to X.
Meanwhile X2 has Zero as the main catalyst of the events and in X3 literally nothing happens.
The X's series have some of the most inconsistent and dumb stories ever produced. It's actually funny how X6 story is probably the best of the 8 games minus the fact that they brought back Zero .. even tho they also did that for X2 but no one complains about that.

Zero's backstory got explored so that Sigma can use him against X one day. X has a fun as hell story. It is consistent and engaging, but cynical people like you just want to repeat certain talking points instead of admitting that the X series is just an edgy take on classic. Of course it's wacky. Have you ever played a Capcom game before? MegaMan Was never written to be realistic. Sad moments don't make a series realistic. Please understand the media before criticizing it because not doing so just makes you look dumb and ignorant. We don't play Megaman for deep or realistic stories. We play them for the cool, edgy, wacky, fun characters and stories with tight creative game play. If you find yourself questioning the style for not being something you prefer then try expanding your interests. You are only hurting your own enjoyment of these fun stories and characters. TBH you come across as one of those insecure classic Megaman fans.
