When you’re in the pros, however, balks are almost never called unless they’re obvious enough to not to ignored. To balk on the final play of the game is infuriating.

I think the reason why people (including me) often panic whenever it comes to the balks is because it is not widely known which type of and how much error can be tolerated in the pitching motions. It seems that balk rules are of "zero tolerance" in principle for wind-up positions: any visible twitching, hesitation, or irrelevant behavior is illegal no matter how small it is (aside the exceptions like taking pivot back first for cancellation and 2B pick-off). Am I understanding the nature of the balk rules correctly, at least partially?

When you're touching the rubber, you cannot move your back leg (the one on the rubber) unless you either disengage the rubber (move that foot backwards towards second base, at which point you're just another infielder), make and complete a pickoff move, or throw a pitch.

I guess if a pitcher is sick or has a sniffle, he shouldn't be on the mound, lest he gets called for a Balk every fifth pitch for rubbing his nose or coughing into his glove. As time goes on, rules for ANY sport should be re-evaluated from time-to-time and fine-tuned for the present-day.

If you’re a pitcher, you can’t deceive base runners into thinking that you’re gonna pitch, then come out of that motion to try and pick him off instead. That can come in the form of coming set, then coming unset, improper motion of the legs while winding up, tripping on the mound, not releasing the ball on a pitch, dropping the ball while pitching, or changing your motion mid-pitch. Once you commit to pitching the ball, you can’t change your mind.
