Russ Ballard - Since You've Been Gone (Supersonic, 1976) FAMILIAR ???

- Here's an interesting thing to see.
I'm sure that this song is familiar to all Rainbow lovers and of course Rock lovers.
Believe it or not this hidious performance of the man called Russ Ballard, who turned
out to be the original maker of one of the most commercial songs in Rainbow's carrer.
Yes believe it or not this is original "Since You've Been Gone !
This performance was shot at Supersonic (very well known Musical Tv Show, which was
head to head with OGWT and TOTP during the 70's).
It was aired on 6th March in 1976.
I never understood what in the hell Ritchie saw in this sleazy pop song.... ?
But Ritchie is Ritchie, and he is truly a music Wizard.....
Cheersssss
I have to disagree with you dude. Russ ballard is one of the greatest songwriters of all time in rock. He has written songs that have been performed by so many artists and being the main ingredient in Argent. I have to give him mad respect for his creativity in a non-elitist way.
I fully agree - there is nothing "hideous" about this version - yes - I prefer Rainbow's version - but Russ Ballard wrote this song - and apart from the keyboard bit - which lacks a bit of "oomph" - Ritchie and friends didn't have to do an awful lot to "bring the song to the next level" - if you'll pardon the cliche !
The guy expects that it was supposed to sound like the future before the future happened. The original sounds like it does because this was the style of the time. Hope he doesn't listen to all the other awesome Russ Ballard Songs that were covered by others.
One of the most under rated guys in music history!
Besides Voices and this, whatelse?
Ritchie is no fool and knew that this song would keep Rainbow on playlists for decades to come. Russ is indeed a talent, just listen to his work with Argent.
And the Zombies
@@russblack443 Russ Ballard was never in the Zombies despite his close associations with Rod Argent & Colin Blunstone.
@@711honved I knew him and Argent wrote together a lot
He also wrote "you can do magic" America made a huge hit w that huh? He was a great song writer and producer!
I loved Argent as a kid and his contributions to that outfit are epic.
God gave rock n roll to you
Hold Your Head Up
Those two alone… damn
I've always loved Russ' voice. Its both beautiful, melodic and strong. He is criminally underrated in every way.
This guy deserves way more recognition
Yep, he's written more songs made famous by other people then most folks know, that's alright, I'll bet he laughs his ass off every month on the way to the bank with the royalty checks in his hand.
Definitely as a song writer
Ditto
@Duke Craig Yeah, no-one uses cheques anymore my man.
@@LauritZenc Yeah they do, kid.
Russ Ballard penned a lot of songs that were covered and became hits.
I can't BELIEVE I've NEVER heard this version...and it's the original.
+Roggiedodgie and it's the best =)
Check out The Arrows original version of "I Love Rock & Roll " Not original from Joan Jett.
And the voice is multiple times better than Rainbow's.
Arrows version is infinitely superior to Joan Jett. Alan Merrill is an incredible talent who should have been huge. Great songwriter, amazing voice, talented musician and endlessly photogenic, it was bad luck he was hitting his stride just at the point that Punk Rock overturned everything..
Never heard original version until now.
Can't understand the derogatory remarks about this version of the song. It's a compliment to Russ Ballard that Rainbow copied it
Remade it
As did Head East
Upgraded it you mean
I like this version as well. The best version is not by Rainbow anyway. Its by Classic Rock Show. Their energy is fantastic on this song.
Great songwriter, this tune, "God Gave Rock and Roll To You". "Hold Your Head Up", "Liar" that 3 Dog Night made famous, "Winning" for Santana, "You Can Do Magic" for America, "Back In The New York Groove" that Ace had a hit with, "I Know There's Something Going On" that had Phil Collins on drums and one of the female singers from ABBA. Night Ranger, Roger Daltrey on it goes the guy could do it all.!!
It's nice to hear the best songwriter in England doing his own songs.
+Modes9 Thumbs up for Russell Glyn Ballard from Waltham Cross, our personal hero!
+Modes9 Absolutely!! I still think he's the only living Rock and Roller to have a top ten hit in four consecutive decades. What an incredible writer.
No it ain't.... Sorry but this would never have made it with him singing it
Sad but true
In a lot of cases,, he has done them first!
I believe that Russ has an uncanny ear and ability to match a singer with one of his songs. I am exceptionally proud of this man. You become instantly in awe if you weren't already of the number of songs he has written. I personally think he should be recognized for his contribution to British music .
He's like the most ridiculously talented guitarist songwriter and should have been stolen by somebody or some band ages ago. Argent did a good job with them but not enough! He wrote very good tight sounding hard rock pop songs
I love Russ ballard's voice ! I remember him from Argent !
I was born early enough to remember Argent (and the Zombies) and have lived long enough to watch UA-cam come to life. Without the internet and UA-cam so much of the music of my youth would never be heard again. Songs like this would never make a radio rotation (although Jim Ladd might have played it once upon a time) And to watch a live performance? Never to be seen. This is so frickin' awesome! Does anyone know what synth is being played? (see 1:50) Maybe a Minimoog? Another great song is the original "In the Street" by Big Star. Thank you Chris Bell and Alex Chilton. Yup, I heard the Box Tops on AM radio.
Dang, Ballard has written SO many great songs and they're so different from each other too. Talented blighter.
Russ probably thinks "So what? I still get royalty payments from it, who cares WHICH version was the big hit!"
Russ Ballard wrote a handful of the greatest pop songs ever written. This is one of them. The Rainbow version is definitive, but this one is the blueprint they followed, adding only the modulation at the end and Blackmore's spanky Strat solo. This version deserves respect. Check out, too, the Head East cover, which is where I first heard the song back in the lost mists of the primordial.
Can't agree with the description to this video. Russ deserves recognition for writing two incrediible Rainbow songs - This and 'I surrender'. Graham Bonet's vocals were the icing on the cake, what a singer - but credit has to go to the song writer.
Ritchie Blackmores guitar and Graham Bonnets vocals added the punch that this song needed.
In other words, "They put some balls into it." 🙂
@@QuarrellaDeVil
Nah some balls of meat have got nothing to do with it. Better guitarist better vocalist. That's all it takes.
@@redmed10 I don't think they improved on this original version at all.
@@2112musician I agree! This version is nearly as good as Rainbow's. He's even a GREAT singer here --- even sounds like the mighty Bonnet.
By contrast, I just listened to the Russ Ballard original of "I Surrender" (which Rainbow also turned into a hit) and the original is HORRIBLY weak, with a terrible singer.
@@jonbongjovi1869More balls to a Ball-ard song...🤣🤣🤣
one of those oddities that he is not a household name. still, an exceptional talent.
This is the first time I've heard the original of the famous Rainbow song - it's incredible! Really cannot understand why this wasn't a hit. Sure, Blackmore's crunchy sound and Bonnet's amazing voice kicked it into the stratosphere but this original recording really isn't far behind. Given the sonics of 1976 versus 1980, this should have become a legendary song before Ritchie discovered it.
Same thing for "I love rock n roll"
Head East's version is better in my opinion
You answered your own question
It was maybe not bubblegum enough for 1976, that MOR pre punk/ New Wave/NWOBHM etc.era, when sugary pop dominated the charts. E.g. " Save Your Kisses For Me Or "Dancing Queen"
Bit too 'synthy'....
great talent, excellent , prolific songwriter who has always kept a low profile
This was great! I always thought Rainbow was the original version. I learned something new!
Russ Ballard wrote the songs and put the groundwork in, but others arguably made them better, he's a legend
This was actually covered and released by Head East one year before Rainbow, so technically they were the 2nd band to cover it.
don't forget Clout too.
Argent was great band. I love Russ Ballard. Great talent.
Someone's just put up footage of Russ Ballard guesting on this classic with Rainbow at the 02 last night (17th June '17). Nice to see. I like Clout's version also.
What a gem. Thanks for sharing it. I only knew the Rainbow version (which I like as well). This is so fresh.
Been listening to this song for 45 years and only found today this is the original. Russ did a great tune in the 80's called Voices which is highly underrated
Unsung hero of rock
Fantastic... I'm a huge Russ fan, this one was originally conceived as a piano song, Rainbow made it a catchy guitar tune, and also added the change of key to its finale. That's why they do sound very different.
First time I’ve heard the original and it’s a good version in its own right. However Rainbow really developed its full potential. Love the all those flames inside a TV studio - pretty laid back about safety in the 70s!
A classic 1960’s style 70’s song still alive in 2023!
This is the first time I’m hearing this. So much better than the hit version. Ballard is an exceptional songwriter. His I Don’t Believe in Miracles for Colin Blunstone is a gem.
Russ Ballard is a genius songwriter and pretty amazing singer too! Why the hate.
since we all heard Graham Bonnet with Rainbow cover first. then think of it that way
Simple mate ...his mother was wej......the guy who hates has got a big problem...if he posted. This to redicule Russ...I'm afraid he's so wrong....u carnt deny charisma and tallent....rise above the hate Russ!
they're all pissed off that none of members of rainbow wrote this lol
cant understand folk at all..this was played lots on radio 1 in 1975..most were submerged in rollermania .. mud and disco to care and it never took off but its still a great record
Stupidity
That was amazing! All versions of this are great! Head East's version, Rainbow's version, Cherie And Marie Currie's version, and Brian May's studio and live versions as well too! ROCK N' ROOLLLL!!! How about that bass player's high notes?! Crazy! I wonder if he is the guy who did it on the studio recording, huh?
"Hidious" ?!
Why?
I dont't think so.
Great song!
Great composer!
Great performer!
😆
Rainbow did it more justice than he.
Just different.
But thank goodness Rainbow covered it!
Hold your head up Russ!!!
While Russ wrote a handful of songs that were covered by Rainbow, I expected his version of this to be awful. It wasn't! More power to Russ!!
Russ Ballard wrote some of the best songs in the history of rock and roll. He's just never really branched out as a solo artist.
"Never succeeded" is more accurate, Argent were a staple of the live circuit in uk during 70's. Played and played, just never struck home.
I'd argue his own "Voices" is one of the best recordings of the 80s. Stunning production and performance.
H÷ was with the Barnett dogs for a few albums
One of the greatest songwriters of all time - FACT
agreed.
Well... since you put it all in caps, it has to be true!!!😂😂😂😂
@@noaff-fn7up LOL ;)
"One of the greatest songwriters of all time - FACT" This is OPINION, not FACT.
FACT: Russ Ballard wrote this song. This is indisputable.
OPINION: One of the greatest songwriters of all time. See the difference?
Here are the FACTS about this song: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Since_You_Been_Gone
I happen to love Russ Ballard's songwriting, too. But people stating their OPINION as FACT is crap. That's my OPINION.
@@Mooseboy08 Take a hike
This type of music was a setup for the kind of music that was coming in the 80's. Love it!! :)
I am very glad to discover Russ Ballard so many years later..
#1 version by the writer of the song!!!
Russ also wrote hits for Three Dog Night, Frida, Ace Frehley, America, Santana, and more.
Great Russ Ballard👍👏👍
🎸🎤🎼🎵
Saw Russ in Argent about 1971 Brilliant
Great Tenor vocalist.
It's Ballard's song, that much is true, but thank God for Graham Bonnet...That's all I'm gonna say on that.
+Colin Zimmermann Yeah it may be his song but it is a weak performance, no surprise that only 3 years later Rainbow rocked it into the charts and have been remembered for it ever since.
Hold your Head Up begs to differ....
Amen
@simgorm, Yeah, and because it is HIS song, he's the one laughing all the way to the bank every time they sell a recording. Great songs come from great song writers, and Russ was a great song writer. PERIOD.
And richie blackmore
Wow this guy has opened a whole New World when it comes to this song .I started out with rainbow and had no idea cause I’m a huge gram bonnet fan but wow !You got a love the UA-cam rabbit hole😎
Just did the same thing :-p
Russ Ballard also wrote "I Surrender": which as you may know was another huge hit for Rainbow. Mr Ballard has written a lot of hit songs.
Russ said he prefer more Rainbow's version of his own song. And he is right.
This is incredible for 4 people considering its usually a full stage of people...people have definitely refined the sound over the years but I'm a fan of all versions...shout out to the keys...best ones I've heard for this song
Just remember to "Hold Your Head Up" because "God Gave Rock and Roll to You"......
Wow I thought this was an original by Rainbow..until today after 40 years this cat sang it first 😮.. I lived under a rock 😣
Thanks for posting, great to see Russ's original version.
Very cool to hear the original version of this great classic song. One point no one has made yet in comments is that Roger Glover (bass player from Deep Purple) produced the Russ Ballard album that this song was on; Glover was playing bass for Rainbow when they recorded their version...maybe it was Roger's idea to re-record it?
No he didn't. The song was on his album "Winning" and it was produced by Muff Winwood not Roger Glover. Easy mistake to make though, as they are both bass guitarists.
the bass players falsetto is incredible and makes this song
The original isn't bad, but it was the Head East version that I fell in love with first and then Rainbow improved upon that.
Well I never!!! Would never have thought Rainbow's was a cover, and not far off this, though Rainbow cleaned it up.
Rainbow brought me here, much different sound, I kinda like it.
Graham Bonnet gave this song the balls it needed!
I was today years old when I learned this was a cover by Rainbow.. I'm 57
Sleazy pop song? WTF? If it's so sleazy why did so many folks cover it? This is a great song. Russ Ballard rocks!
Fascinating to compare this with Rainbow's far more commercially successful cover from 1979. The song is excellent, but Rainbow's arrangement is so much stronger. Russ Ballard's songwriting deserves the bolder performance.
Absolutely brilliant! Yes, it does bring back memories of Rainbow's version of the song sung by Graham Bonnet. Also, please check out the version sung by Brian May (yes, of Queen, of course!) ... it's superb. God bless Ballard.
Che brano e che riff. Adoro questa canzone, mi piace un sacco anche la cover dei Rainbow. Russ Ballard immenso🔥
He also wrote the big hit Elkie Brooks had in the 80's 'No more the fool' Which was originally intended for Kim Wild
Russ Ballard is one of the best songwriters the UK has ever produced...i am just glad there were no smoke detectors in those days...
I am friends now (but used to date) Russ Ballard's grandson. I had no idea about this until one day it was played in class😂
Wow. Had no idea bout this version. Well, he is a brilliant performer and one heckuva song writer if this is his tune. Beautiful. Rainbow obviously super-charged it with the power of hard rock, but it is amazing to here it in its original state.
This song is great, not sure what you have against Russ Ballard
nothing, he is the original of this song. i was just saying head east sounds the most like this version.
The UA-cam description calls this performance "hideous"
Kudos to Ballard for writing one fantastical song here! I had no idea! And surprisingly, this original version already contains quite a bit of the ins-and-outs, and cool ingredients that are so recognizable in the Clout and Rainbow versions. Of course the intensity and full-out emotion of Graham Bonnet's vocals, along with Ritchie Blackmore's signature guitar and the driving force of "Rainbow," take this song to a whole 'nother level. Rainbow also appears to be the first to add the key modulation after the bridge, cranking it up a notch, and making it for me one of the all-time most magical rock songs ever. Truly a well-written song, with three unique and satisfying versions.
Here's Clouts version: ua-cam.com/video/zX6h54VTAIs/v-deo.html
and Rainbow's version: ua-cam.com/video/1P17ct4e5OE/v-deo.html
Indeed, the modulation after the bridge (which Rainbow also changed for the better) was a good idea. I also liked the version of Alcatrazz (Bonnet's band later on) with Yngwie Malmsteen and later Steve Vai.
Can I also suggest a further version? Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott's version recorded live for Chris Evans Breakfast Show! There is so much to discover in this song!
This is pretty good, I love Rainbow's version though
Rock Show does a very good cover that is the most energy of all the versions. I discovered it by accident. I love all three versions though.
Sleazy? Pardon? This song is damn amazing!!!!!!
If Ritchie covers you, you are God.
The bassist just got off his shift at Kmart, and made the gig just in time! (I’ve done that myself) 💰👍
Great to hear the original song. Still a brilliant tune.
Hey everyone, I am a boomer who knew of Russ Balard before Rainbow. I like both bands equally, just as I like JLT & RJD equally as great vocalists. But Russ wrote some great f*****g songs. Also a great song for King Kobra called Dream on. Keep on rockin hard everybody.
Thanks Gillanfan, this was "Untitled" when you first posted.
This album alone should get Russ in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame.
Agreed what a great and influential musician
Fantastic O. Version from Russ Ballard
It was a pleasure to see this man at the London Arena with Blackmore and his boys with some beers and surrounded by good friends (my brother Miguel, Edurne, Rafa Basa, Estrella, etc.) unforgettable.
Russ absolutely RULES!!!
Great Tune!! I always thought headeast wrote it. A lot of covers on this song.
Huge Rainbow fan...didn't realize the song was a cover. I definitely prefer Rainbow's version. Thank goodness for Graham n Ritchie n crew!
I love the Rainbow version and I also like the Santana version of his Winning song but this is not hideous, I think its great and he is a very good song writer, singer and musician.
check out Brian Mays version
nice song but yeah i prefer the Rainbow cover cheers
@@MadDogE134 Brian May was better
@Longitude Latitude I just finished smoking fuck ingredients crack, bro.
@@pecahndasmu at least brian showed he actually DOES know what good music is lol
So many have learned from this song , me including!
Great song, by the writer Ballard or Rainbow, each has it's own quality.
I'm usually pretty good with music trivia, but just learned & had NO idea Ballard wrote this. The first version I heard was Head East's back I high school, then hearing Rainbow's version I couldn't imagine Ritchie Blackmore doing a Head East tune. So with no internet to search it, I never looked it up, then basically dismissed it.
Familiar indeed. Great song! Funny the 2nd voice, so loud&clear! I'm a Rock lover!
Those were the days when a bona fide rock star could appear on TV wearing an oversized cardigan that his gran had knitted for him for Christmas!
Many a versions of this songs have been made, but this remains the best.
you lie check Dr May
Rainbow version is better in my opinion
Graham Bonnet did the best vocals ever on this
Russ himself said Rainbow's version was the best.
Rainbow's version is one of my favorite songs. Not a fan of this one.
I am starting to forget much about the rock classics. First of all this is the first time I come across the original Since You Been Gone. I thought Rainbow or Alcatrazz had the original. I have always loved Graham Bonnet's vocal. When I found back Rainbow, I thought to myself, wasn't there another band witha great hit related to Rainbow's? After some research I found out it was Alcatrazz but I got no hit on "Alcatraz" except well you know. I ended up in Wikipedia and that's where I found out Russ Ballard had the original. From wiki back to UA-cam. I like Russ Ballard's original lot.
Russ Ballard is a very mysterious man.
Estraordinarily good looking, effortless performer (singer/axeman), but it would seem a massive "under achiever".
Well, not really - this song alone probably earned him enough to retire on.
Then, go back to his days with Argent.
Can you really say that you're not (at least subliminally) aware of;
"God Gave Rock and Roll To you" (which he wrote)?
"Hold Your Head Up" (not his song, but would Argent have had the hit if not for him?
Rainer Scott I assume the experience of being a member of Argent was the closest he ever got to mainstream rock stardom.
I entirely agree.
Would he have had the hits without those talents tho?
Who made who? Hey? Eh? Eh?
sick video. looking forward to more
I think Blackmore admires Ballad and he just had to play this song.
This is Argent Bonnet released this song during every band he was in. Later was Rainbow (Blackmore) then Alcatrazz (Malmsteen) all were awesome I think
Glad i heard the Ballard original, + can appreciate the way, this classic was meant to be, usually cover versions, loose emphasis, on key parts, + the feel, tending to accent, the irrelevant, this is a prime example
I like this
Whoever does it (Brian May, for one)
is going to sound pretty good, as it's got suchba great melody, & is, in itself, Fabulous!
Sounds Great
Wow! After hearing that falsetto and those four stroke ruffs on the tom-tom - Rainbow did the right thing with their version...
