I would think most Americans have only been exposed to “Hold Your Head Up”, so it’s so cool to see this great band doing other songs too. Excellent musicianship @ vocals.
Argent were my second concert. Hawkwind were first, then Argent 12th September 1975 followed by Wishbone Ash. Those were the days. Sadly Russ had moved on to his solo work etc by the time I got to see them.
First saw and heard Argent at Liverpool Stadium about 1970 but cant be sure. Amazing. Loved Russ's cutaway Strat. Still being at school I couldn't afford to buy the album "argent' so use to go down to NEMS and Rushworth's in Liverpool to get them to play the album in one of those booths to listen to 'stepping stone' and 'liar' to try and try and memorise them so I could figure them out on my guitar when I got home. Saw them lots after that gig. It was so sad that Jim died, but what annoyed me was when the press described him as being best known as bass player for the KINKS!!!! Surely Argent was his finest hour.
Saw The Zombies in 2002 with Rod Argent and Jim Rodford on Bass. Didn’t realize that Rodford was such an important British Bassist. Not to mention that the Fender is almost a big as him. RIP Jim.
I saw him when he was playing with the Kinks in 1981 or so. It was a fantastic time. They were a sloppy rocking band. Of course I was smoking hash the whole time😈
Yes - quite underestimated. I used to have many copies of "International Musician" monthly magazine (sadly chucked away) and I think he had a bass column or did reviews.
I saw the Zombies the year before (2001) at Worcester Park. We had a chance to meet both Rod and Colin. There was CD merchandise there, I bought Rod Argent solo cd which he signed for me. I've built a nice collection over the years of CD's and Records by the Zombies, Argent , Rod Argent , Russ Ballard and Colin Blunstone. For me, their music has a timeless quality. Thankyou for this wonderful upload.
Couldn't be more in agreement with that concise assessment, man! As much a Zombies fan as I am, it's all the more for Argent and their all-around musicality...
Back in the 80s my classmate lent me a record of this band. There was no title, or maybe there was, but I couldn't find any info on them, so I thought the title was irrelevant. Anyway, I've been looking for any traces of this band for decades. This music had a huge impact on my musical taste and became a benchmark for creativity and performance skills. So glad I've finally came across this video. Thank you so much for uploading it!
At the time - still a Zombies fan - I was swept away by the first two Argent albums. While absolutely a forever Colin Blunstaone fan, I found Russ Ballard having the right voice too, and and he wrote fine songs for the band. And here we hear how excellent the band was, when live. Rod's keyboard's fusion with jazz and classical music was, as always, sublime. Just found out in Wiki Discography that their first two albums didn't chart anywhere. A shame! I'm still missing the last two albums: 'Circus' and 'Counterpoints', I'll never forgive myself... Get well Rod, you're only 79! 🥴
@@jonathanstiles7221 I had them on vinyl, I vaguely remember these records. After 'Argent', Rod wanted a solo career, it didn't work. Colin Blunstone was invited to cooperate with Alan Parson, Rod Argent never. 😁Rod's influence and production is prominent on Colin's three first solo albums, though. And for 25 years both icons are touring as the (new) Zombies, and I treasure the memory of one of their concerts in the 2010's. The intimate gig the two pensioners gave me was the best and most memorable concert of my life. And those two icons loved what they were doing, no prima donna attitudes! After they finished, I went to Rod and Colin, and said with my hand on my heart; "THANK you, guys!"
Argent at their earliest best. Still have one of Bob's sticks up in the loft. Thrown to the audience after his solo in 'The Fakir'. Malvern Winter Gardens.
I don't care for "Three Dog Night". Argent's version of Liar was the first I ever heard. I liked it so much, that I decided to check out more from them. This is how I discovered this band back in 2007. And only 3 years later they made a brief reunion after more than 40 years.
Thanks to Tubular for the info on the musicians. Drummer Bob Henrit reminds me a lot and even looks a little like the very young Mike Shrieve of Santana in the early 70s.
Three Dog Night also covered Ballard's 'Chained', which Argent also recorded. Ballard penned several major hits by others including 'You Can Do Magic' (America), 'Since You've Been Gone' (Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow), 'So You Win Again (Hot Chocolate), 'I Don't Believe In Miracles' (Colin Blunstone), New York Groove' (Ace Frehley), 'God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You' (KISS), 'I'm Winning' (Santana) and numerous others, from Olivia Newton-John to Roger Daltry, and both female singers from ABBA. A more complete list can be found at the bottom of his Wikipedia page.
He writes on his website that as a child, "I was hit in the eye by a stone from a catapult. I knew from the moment I was hit that I was blind in my right eye. I was rushed to Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, where I had both eyes covered for twelve days. The doctors tried hard to save the sight of my eye through ten operations over three years, this was unsuccessful." I wonder if the injury, and subsequent operations, left his other eye sensitive to the bright lights of being on stage?
Ross Ballard of Argent at the time wrote it. 3 Dog Night’s big hits were all written by people outside the band as far as I know. It’s one of the reasons they have been snubbed by members of the music press. A shame really. I mean Elvis didn’t write any of his own stuff after all… Russ wrote a TON of cool songs covered by others.
Besides lead organist Rod Argent, is it possible to know the names of the musicians of this brilliant live studio performance? Thanks and good music to all of you from Nettuno (Rome) ITALY.
Hay. Lol.. Where are all the cell phones? So predictions of the band… “Hold your head up.” Written after the bands trip to the future and everyone’s head was at that cellular tilt…. I gets my Sweet Mary from my dr now a days….. I never thought I would ever see it. They are micro dosing mushrooms in Colorado these days…. Who would have thought that could happen. Argent in. my top 5 ahead of their times rock bands. Thanks guys…. Oh I see Russ has his own page now😅. Here you go “ua-cam.com/video/v_duZirpjpI/v-deo.htmlsi=LuKb02o-GpctlPbA”
Russ is so talented a great guitarist, song writer, and so easy on the eyes to watch him sing ❤
Russ had a great voice and was an excellent songwriter. And suddenly he went solo, and was gone.
Argent were such a fantastic band.
I would think most Americans have only been exposed to “Hold Your Head Up”, so it’s so cool to see this great band doing other songs too. Excellent musicianship @ vocals.
"Hold Your Head Up" is nothing compared to many other of their songs.
First band I ever saw live: Argent. At 6 Flags over Mid America in St Louis MO. 1971. Whatta show.
Argent were my second concert. Hawkwind were first, then Argent 12th September 1975 followed by Wishbone Ash. Those were the days. Sadly Russ had moved on to his solo work etc by the time I got to see them.

Great to see them doing the magnificent “Rejoice” - my all-time favourite Argent tune.

Nothing else matters to me but Early Argent and. This is pure Gold 🇺🇸💥🎶🎵💥💥💥💥💥💥
This was a really good band. I always liked them.
A groovy rock and roll band with soul.
class musicians
Like the Zombies, Argent was over the heads of the general pop music audience.
Very very good band. . ..
I loved Argent, such a great band. Here working the audience into a frenzy. They had such great feel and very distinctive vocals plus brilliant songs.

Get those last two Argent albums! They’re actually the best ones.

Fantastic from a fan !!

Very much like a young Carl Palmer
Lords of awesomeness!
Здорово 👍 рок 🎸 навсегда
Even better live than on record.
Truly ahead of their time
Absolutely not.
They were of their time.
I hope Russell got a fat check from Three Dog Night. Never knew that about "Liar"!

God Gave Rocknroll to You was originally on Argent's In Deep in 1973
I thought Russell Ballard did a lot of LEO SAYER albums to .
👍👍👍👍👍
Fab 🇬🇧 musicianship.
Shame the 🎤 techno was poor.
I wonder if queen was influenced by this? Sounds like it. I only heard hold your head up before this. cool prog pop band.
I've never seen Russ without shades. And I've seen John Kay without shades.
wow that's a rare sighting! like Keith richards without a cigarette.

wow what a trip, so " liar" did" Three Dog Night " write it or cover it ? thanks for posting this is too cool ...
